- this 1958 vw bug that was towed from california to newHampshire 35 years ago, at the time they were trying to get it switched over from 6 volt to 12 volt but never got it to work, after leaving it in the woods for 35 years we came along and dragged it out. now lets see what the weather, critters and time has left for us to work with.

Saw a cartoon the other day with 4 tires standing up. It said "Sprayed some rust remover on it."
Like the old Polish guy who wanted to get rid of the bad smell in his socks. Bought a pair of ODOR EATERS.....3 days later....he was GONE ! JwgK
I was 16 yrs old back in 95 mowing lawns, when one of the houses I was mowing was preparing to junk a 70 bug. The lady told me the wrecker was giving her $200 to haul it away. I told her I would mow her lawn for the rest of the season for free if she gave it to me. She agreed so I through what gas I had left in my gas can for the lawn mower, spent 15 minutes tinkering and she fired up. After I got home I told my dad and we went back to drive it home. I miss that bug. No heat and no a/c, but those seats were infamous for robbing my friends of the change in their pockets which came in handy when I needed 85 cents to get home and it didn't matter where I was hahaha. I never did clock the mpg on her but it never mattered anyway.
I have a feeling that if a vw engine isn’t mechanically broken…..it will start if you just know what to do to make sure there is spark and fuel.
I had a summer job with a farmer. He gave me his VW Beattie to drive backs d forth to work. I drove that thing like a race car and stick shift all the way. Great little car and very fast pick up
My 66 got 22 mpg about the same MPG as my 5.7L Hemi Challenger when I drive it in eco mode. Back in the early 70s I remember a early 70's gas war with 22 cents a gallon gas and did a fill up from an almost empty tank for $2.
@@robc8468 Must've been nice, Now I gotta work 4 flippin' hours to just fill the 20 yr old Honda Civic.
@burningfeet 53 The EPA rated the 1975 Beetle at 21.4 mpg city I drove my 66 mostly in the city. In 1975 the average car got 13.4 in the city.
I think I actually heard a breath of relief of being saved! Poor little bug, a new life!🥰
What year is it?

I’m still catching up on some of the old mustie1 videos I’m surprise 5150 didn’t sniff this one out lol. This would be right up his alley. Thank you mustie, It’s always a great time watching you do what you do.
Crusty has a little sister, how cute.
Today on Mustie1, "Mustiana Jones". When you guys pulled it out of that jungle, I was worried it might break in half.
Mustiana Jones was very good...You deserve a pile of likes for that!

"I can't hold my breath that long". The joys of restoration.
Why do I find it so damn satisfying to watch someone wash a really dirty car even when it’s completely rusty ?
Here in Brazil, we say "paint it green and throw in the bushes" when someone doesn't know what to do with an old car...

Nice, I have 39 that my Father restored in the 70s. Can't wait to watch this project.
Thank you for entertaining me yet again
I know you told me about it being in the woods but 😮...I'm stoked to see this one back on the road 👍.
Wait tell he gets it up to 88 miles an hour!!! Sporting the Doc. Brown Dew!!!😅🤣😂💯👍Brian Aka (Marty Mcfly Cameo)!!!; )

I am watching this in Sydney, on the other side of the world and when Musti is emptying the glove box I find myself holding my breath in order not to breathe any of that dust. True story.
Us to here in the states to Richard . 😨
Say hey to Drain Addict for me. Great channel. Guys totally throwed off.
I'm so glad you saved this car. I was born in 85' and I can appreciate this car all the way to California, by the way born there too. I wouldn't have left it for dead though. The look/patina is awesome.
That must have still been a nice, solid car in 1985-too bad it had to sit in the woods.
Definitely want to see this as a sooner than later project. Who’s with me?
Talks it down
Heck ya...I luv VW's
Should be in the line up anyways.
Yep

Mustie is rocking that Dr Emmett brown look 👍
I had exactly the same in my mind😂
Hi Mustie 1 please make it run again, to bring all the memories and ..........
Love Mustie's positive attitude. Floors are missing, engine won't rotate. 'She's in pretty good shape.' 😂😂😂
Mustie the hoarder going thru that stuff I thought you were gonna have a “Volksgasm”!!🤣
first look at that bug and she is a beauty. I would only clearcoat that boddy. Absolutely beautiful
My first-ever car was a 59 bug. It didn't have a gas gauge but had a lever on the front fire wall above the tunnel that would switch it to reserve if you were running out of gas. Didn't see it on your bug. Lesson learned was to put lever back to normal after filling up.
When Mustie said, "It actually does not look terrible." I spit my coffee all over the keyboard!
I've seen far, far , far worse.
Actually it's not so bad now.
Compared to some of the lawn tractors, snow blowers, generators and pressure washers he got from the side of the road, this Beetle is in pretty decent condition.
@@ReneSchickbauer I agree. He even got some spare parts.
My dad had a 58 bug with the semaphores that he restored 10 years ago wish he still had it. Great Find! 👍
I really hope you do "complete" this one, I really like it, I feel like it's got a nice friendly personality, reminds me of crusty.
When I feel lonely and bored, Mustie's videos saves me from boredom.
I deliver to a place that loves VW as much as you do. They have six Beetles, two Karmann Ghias and a Thing.
I don't understand VW love, but to y'all who like this stuff, the passion is real. Resorting something instead of just trashing it, that's what's cool
I think it is a form of masochism. One of those it's so horrible it is good things? I mean the whole concept of bugs sucks so bad that it could have only been born in the twisted mind of Hitler himself.
Morning gents. As much as we all hate under coating. I think we have to call this one a win for protecting the underbody of this car. I thought you were crazy for pulling that out of the weeds until you got into it and saw that it was surprisingly repairable.
I saved a rusty 63 sunroof bug in 1988 and still have it . I drive it on nice days. sometimes to work. i get thumbs up all the time
Another great video! Thanks Mustie!
After so many mowers and snowblowers I'd forgotten what old beetles smelled like. I've been holding my breath for over 30 minutes!
Looks like it was upholstered, with discarded kilts.
Finding these beetles growing in the wild is extremely rare. Nice to catch a humane harvest on film
What surprises me is that the headlights and lights are in very good condition and are complete, which is the hardest thing to find, that car deserves to be restored.
You know when you watch these videos of old guys who have amassed this incredible collection of stuff and you wonder how in the hell did this guy end up with all of this?? Here you are seeing how that happens in real time.
best part of Sunday morning
Look forward to it every Sunday.
Defiantly love is in the eye of the beholder, i was holding my breath when you emptied the glove box, good luck.
Nice look forward to more wrenching on Fruity Pebbles! Thanks for the shop time.
One of these days, Mustie is going to find an old, rusty VW emblem in the woods, and we aren't going to be surprised when he "gets it going"...
just grab a few spare parts from his "stash"
He'll just hit it with the wire wheel and it'll be good as new.
I can’t believe the car did not pull in half!
The roof and centre chassis tube must still be sound
I knew it was in better shape than it looked when it didn't fail coming out of the dirt.
I was shocked that any of the wheels still rolled.
The bird droppings were holding it together
The bag of gold is hidden away in the glovebox, make sure to sift through that nesting material real well.
I watched this video on June 18 on my Smarty TV from start to finish just to watch a guy look thru jars of junkie nuts, bolts, and pencils.
That VW is in better shape than it looked there in the mud, the blood, and the weeds.
No matter how badly I needed a key I'd never looked bare handed thru that pee soaked glove box!
I can't say I learned anything. But it sure was fun watchin!
Beetle Time Coffee and a Mustie1 video. Yep its gooood
The slotted aluminum disc looks like the bottom pan from a pressure canner.
Yep. I had the same thought... or a steamer. Cheers, Steve
That's exactly what it is. Rack for a pressure cooker.
Love the headlights on the ol girl. She's good! Great find 👍🏻
Wow 1958 Bug thats when i was born im age 64 What a fantastic find
The see-through floor in the back will keep the kids entertained.
OK you shocked my wife she heard the" looks better than she smells... I had dates like that " as she was walking past the tv
You VW guys just will not give up. Good luck with that pile of rust.
Hey Mustie, prayers to you and your family. I always enjoy watching your videos Brother. God bless America and all our UA-camr family. Love Uncle Jeff!
If you in Oz, you'd be reaching in pulling stuff out...."Oil filter, oil wrench, deadly spider, fuel pump, trim, deadly snake, fuses, relay, battery, 5 meter croc, registration paper, more trim, 6 volt battery, shark, funky seat covers, front seat, dingo...
"It's broken a couple of timing gear teeth, the radiator's cracked at the core....."
Now that was funny oz 🤣🤣😂🇺🇸 you forgot the taz in the glove box .
At one time this country was crawling with critters too. But our ancestors in their infinite wisdom killed all of it. Where wolf? There wolf. Click, bang.
@@1pcfred Thankfully, wolves are being reintroduced as someone finally realized they're part of the ecological circle. No matter how hard you try, you can't stop farmers shooting animals they consider pests.
When I visited Grand Canyon some years back, I took a horse ride down deep into the canyon. The Havasupai guide told me you only really need to worry about rattlers and scorpions. More the scorpions than the rattlers. Thankfully, I didn't see either one while I was there. In the parks, wolves are doing well now. Outside of the park's protection they still suffer losses, shamefully.
@@ellesmerewildwood4858 you can't stop folks from shooting stuff on their own property they don't want on their property. That's why you own property.
I look forward to the ensuing miracle.
Its lucky, were some see junk and you see treasure Darren , or poor old Herbie here would still be rotting away to nothing. It's a crowning achievement for you to rescue this pile of rust and like others have said before me, how bad does a VW have to be where you just leave it, and let it carry on rusting to nothing. A great achievement on your part
I love Fruity Pebbles all ready. Hope to see her alive again!! Nice save already.
That’s a hell of a find, good on ya for rescuing her would’ve been a shame for a car with that much good metal to have started rusting away
He's got great connections with finding vws. Where I live, if you find one in good condition there $$$$$.
I don’t know but is it worth the time fix something like this?
@@porleg hell yeah it’s not even rusted that bad, new floor pans and it’s a brand new car
Be careful towing it out of the woods, you don’t want to scratch the paint.
I thought that too lol
Naa, he meant the trailer.
That would have been a real adventure ..... in Australia.
Which layer???
Thanks Mustie 1 enjoyed the video greatly. Hi from Australia.
Thankyou for rescuing that beetle. My first was a 65 beetle and my last a 72. All restored by my Dad and I. Been watching the channel a couple of years.
Watching the clock this morning for my Mustie1 fix fix.
Good old doc brown at it again on a Sunday morning. Where’s the flux capacitor go on this time machine?
At least this bug found a loving home where the hoomans will take care of it.
Now that was interesting and fun Mustie👍👍👍👍
Anybody else get dizzy from holding their breath while he cleaned out the glove box?
Ha! Same here! I felt my mouth getting dry, and realized I'd been breathing through my mouth the whole time!!!
When you were sorting through those boxes of small parts: "Picking the peanuts out of the elephant's poop"
Coffee beans out of monkey poop.
Surprisingly not bad, good find.
The patina on this car is so so so beautiful. Clean it up and clear.
Somehow mustie is just way better than TV.
What’s TV? :)
That is very nearly damning with faint praise.
Whenever Mustie1 and a Volkswagen come together, all is well in the world again.
Mustie1 & VW's videos, are my favorite ones.
Amen brother!
Takes me back to why I followed Mustie in the first place. VW
I mean I do like all the videos. His Vw camper drive back from Florida was epic.
I so agree with you
I appreciate you putting the tire valve stem caps back on. Proper.
What kind of person dislikes this video? UA-cam is crazy. Mustie1, you are the man. Best content/commentary going for my money.
People who are competing with Mustie's channel, or are self-hating trolls, like some of the idiots making dumb comments here.
A green bug in the forest, how unusual!
I always remember, when I see something like this: That car used to be brand new. Once upon a time, someone drove it off a dealer's lot for the first time. Who? Where did he go in it? There's a lot of history there. I'd love to see it running again.
A lot of history is best left where it belongs, in the past.
I have sold cars for many years .. and I remember selling one of the last old Mini to an old lady . It was in 1997. When I was in the area again last year I thought : Let's drive through the street where she used to live : and there it was , 25 years later , in the same spot as it used to be . You feel so strange at that moment , it's the same like seeing someone back after 25 years . And I really understand Joe .. the first owner , the conversations held in , the last drive before stalling it in the forest .. what a stories this car could tell ! Love it .
Oh Yes! the Circular piece of Slotted aluminum with a lip on it is the inner cooking plate out the bottom inside of a Presto Pressure Cooker.! that is real fodder for a dumpster! LOL Glad ya found the plate kid ; now ya won't blow yerself up!
Listening to the camera's heartbeat is part of enjoying these videos
Good Morning everyone.
You know mustie has one hell of an immune system lol
These vids are so good I watch them every night vw boat motors lawn mowers the heavy band saw really enjoy alot from fixing vw to just about anything great job
Congratulations on the find. I wish the 58 gets a new lease of life and runs again. All the best.
Hey Mustie, I'm dying to see the Econoline finished.
This is the sort of project that once you've sorted out all the pieces, you need a good, long shower!
feel like I need a tetanus shot just looking at it.
lol
…keep a very close eye on the budget then it can be rewarding. Mustie1 knows it ain’t worth much but will be cool once the day glow yellow has departed
LoL, sounds like every project I do.
Don't wanna scratch the paint.....6:35. Priceless Mustie humor. I'm hooked ! JwgK
The California plates are the most valuable find in this haul.
A restorable 1959 VW Bug as opposed to a vintage license plate? Nah....not even close.

There’s something so satisfying about getting a car resurrected after so many years, Mustie is the man!
That stamped disc from inside the trunk looks like it is part of a 70's pressure cooker.
Yup I was thinking pressure cooker insert too!
Yes there's one in my pressure cooker. Recognised it immediately!

Given the crazy tick season we are having, I'm going to guess he brought home more than the 1 bug.
You can see what happens to spray paint over hot dip. I thought it was amusing when Mustie was pushing on the inside of the door, like a clown going "Hey, wait guys, I have to push it open first!" It was also mildly amusing with the lubricant on the hinges. Everyone does it - even knowing that you have to wait for penetration, you still immediately try the object to see if it 'just worked'.

A lost vw in the woods?? I'll watch the crap outta this!! :D The patina is wicked!!!!!!!!!
Hey, Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I gave up my VW bug about the same time after it being mine for about 25 years. Had to let it go because the body was rotten and a hazard to proper steering. My co-worker ended up with it and came back later and gave me $100 for it. Said that the body was rotten, but the motor and transmission were the best used components he had ever purchased. Well, I did have engine re-built 3 times and replaced the transmission. Lasted me for 300 000 miles.
Considering where that appears to have sat for the last 35 years then it's in pretty amazingly good shape...
Geez, that's one crusty Fintstone mobile.

I just panicked for a second. I was scrolling through my notifications looking for a mustie episode and didn't see it. My heart sank for a second then I realized I skipped past it. Whew.
This is an absolute labor of love, and I hope it gets restored. I am wildly curious if it is possible. I believe at several points of this video, my allergies responded with histamines from just seeing and imagining all that dust, dander and urine / feces. I cannot wait to see more.
I’m 4 mins into this and I’m already thinking, this bug and crusty will go together like peas and carrots !

Herbie rides again, needs a paint job with a big 53!
@Tom Poole, or rather his LONG LOST relative! 😂🚗🤗
Glad to watch not to interested in owning a VW today but in years past that was my car of choice. Also I had a tow bar for under the front axle to drag it home when it broke and needed repair, all of my fellow VW owners borrowed it a bunch of times, Happy Days!
This reminds me so much of an archeological dig. you never know what you will find.
