I had a Jeep Liberty years ago that needed an oil pan. The shop manual called for removing the engine and it was an 18 hour job. My mechanic said he could cut the cross member under the oil pan and weld it back on in about two hours instead of removing the engine. You know what we did, chop chop!!
We used to joke; the service manual said replacing the evaporator in a Mercedes 300SD was a 24hr job... we said we could cut the car in half, change the evap, weld the car back together and repaint in 12.
Lack of clickbait titles and sensationalism is my guess. What appeals to the mindless masses is not what appeals to Mustie viewers -- wouldn't have it any other way.
A little trick for NOT losing C-clips I learned from an older mechanic, is to place strong magnets around where the clip will come off. Most of the time the clip will stick to the magnet instead of shooting off and disappearing. It doesn’t always work but works more often than it doesn’t. It’s worked for me for years and the newer neodymium magnets makes it even more effective. Works with bearing caps with pins as well. Never too early for PDiddy jokes! Been making them for years!
This is the first time I'm commenting on your videos. I've been watching them for quite some time and can actually say I enjoy not only your topics but also your style. I've learned so much from both your mistakes and your achievements. You think out loud and talk your way through an issue and I find this most informative. Keep up the great work and keep 'em coming.
I would cut the crossmember about 1" away from the frame rail. Then you could weld a tab and drill it to bolt the crossmember back in. If there is a next time repair, you can just unbolt it to get access.
Great idea! My thoughts was close. A patch plate above, the drilled for two bolts & welded. Then welded a few inches from the original cut. RJS USAF 81-85.

Or put a small dab of epoxy on the center of a dowel and inset into the hole. Wait some time for it to cure and remove the dowel, taking the pin with it.
Wonder if the reason the pads on the emergency brake was worn is becuase it was a bugger to get at and remove. A typical design in mechanical items, people with no patients just go buy a new machine and people with the know how bear down and fix them. Love your content never miss an episode.
Greetings from Austria! I work on a Fortress on a big hill and I drive a Polaris there (albeit a newer Ranger). Great to know how it works and how to fix it.
On the parking brakes, certain groups of operators will use it as a service brake. For the final stop before getting off, they will pull the parking brakes instead of using the brake pedal. They will be exiting the vehicle before it stops.
Nice repair and video! I can certainly relate to it being easier to acquire projects than finding/making parts to finish them off! Having 3 or 4 things on the bench at a time is the bane of my hobby existence.
That was a great video, thanks ! Someone , somewhere has the doors for that, someone that didn't fix their pressure regulator ! Great start to my Sunday !
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: other UA-camrs would do well to watch Mustie1 videos and learn the fine art of making videos that people want to watch! There's a lot more to it than just showing folks how to do repairs!
What surprised me was when I watched a restoration channel. The guy never says a word. He puts a little bit of text, but it’s just short explanation. He has a couple million subscribers and way fewer videos.
Mustie (Darren) is just the best content creator or content provider or however the platform designates him on UA-cam!! I’m amazed at his talent, ability and dedication to his channel. He’s awesome!!
Mustie1, I know that ur Wife will be happy riding the Ranger now. great job getting that drive shaft-off and on with the new parts.. have a couple of beers on me Mate.
You know you've been watching Mustie1 channel a long time when in your mind you say "get a punch pin to align the holes then a socket and extension to set the pin" and he does it.
I rented a new Ryder truck for a cross country trip. The parking brake did not work. For two days, I had to chock the tires when I parked it, even with the parking brake on. On day three of the trip, I accidentally left the brake on for a couple of hours on the road. It worked perfectly after that.
You do such intricate work , & great knowledge! That job of getting the drive shaft out & unjoint & back together in the small opening reminds me of the old board game as a kid “Operation “ 😂 Enjoying the Fun , Entertainment & your work as usual! 💪
Ooh, universal joints! That brings back memories. I've done a few. What were they called in the UK? Hardy Spicer I think. No Internet back in those days. I was limited to Haynes workshop manuals and help from friends.
Great videos. I look forward to these on Sundays. May be wrong, but I press the joints in with the vise. Takes the "shock" away that may dislodge the needles.
I actually was yelling at you. LOL Washer!!!!! And yesterday I used a "Mustie" trick to remove a lock, two box wrenches together to "pry" it off. It was just a cheap lock on a suitcase, but because I had seen you do it, I tried it successfully. No cutting or anything. It's worth the hour on Sunday to see you work. Do stay healthy this winter, I have 4 months of "not a lot to do" before next year's sailing season. And as I have a few maintenance and replacement items to do, need all the tips on how tools can serve me better.
Seems the tip over and parking saved it from that sticking oil pin. That glove was a great idea! Shout out to the guy who figured out the issue and came up with the ball bearing trick.
There are three differentials modes. Bottom is 1 wheel drive turf mode with an open diff, middle is 2wd locked rear diff and top is AWD which engages front diff on demand. Be careful with turf mode. Some older model owners swear it damages the transfer system. And also, I've heard they recommend to make absolutely sure you don't shift into or out of turf mode while driving. We have a 21 Ranger 1000 Crew Premium, and I've been overly cautious with turf mode just in case. But between 2wd and AWD I just make sure the rear wheels aren't slipping before popping into AWD. I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you keep it. We absolutely love ours!
Mustie that emergency brake system is crazy. I've got a John Deere xuv 560 and the set up with the little ball bearings that it pivots on is exactly the same. I just think it's funny that they have disc brakes on each wheel but yet the emergency brake is in the drive shaft on mine. Mine you can't replace the pads either. You must replace the whole assembly and it's over 200 dollars. Needless to say I've got a block of wood in the bed I throw under my tire for a parking brake.
I've learned from my mistakes that when pressing apart UJs i insert half a piece of tube (C shaped) inside the UJ to stop it bending as I press the bearing shells out.
I made sure my relief valve was moving free and went ahead and polished it and put a pressure gage on it with a red light indicator for low pressure, regular oil changes are a must. Inside floor comes out easy for access
Ya need a little fluid film under there. Wonderful video. Several years ago I had a Kawasaki Mule, when the starter went bad the dealer told me a new one was nearly $600. I wouldnt pay that so as I was leaving one of the young service guys stopped me and clued me in to a sight that sold the, for about $100. Seems it's the same starter used on many different engines.
The mode selector switch is bottom-turf mode(one wheel peel) center-rear lock and top-4x4 at least on mine. I also have had to replace the front drive shaft and without a lift it turns into a long project having to loosen the front differential and the front right cv shaft. Lots easier removing the cross strut. Thanks for the content long time subscriber.
Darren lives and makes great videos in New Hampshire, but he still sounds like a guy from New Jersey ! Don't lose that accent. I've been out of NJ since '87 but still have mine also.
We had a 500 4x4 Polaris Ranger on a long-term job site for about 12 years. We drove the snot out of it year-round. We went through a few drive belts, a fuel pump, computer and one set of CVT pulleys over the years. The nail in the coffin was when the connection between the air box and the engine intake came apart and it sucked in a bunch of dust for a couple or few weeks. The engine oil looked like mud after that and it just plain quit running. One rebuilt engine later and it was back to work.
Dear Mustie1. 👍👌👏 Very well done, Sir. 2) Glad that you are happy with your purchase after all the maintenance and repairs. Hope that the engine is healthier than it sounds. By the way: 3) For my personal kind of taste this vehicle is way too rattely/squeaky inside and therefore annoying. But I guess with added doors and some more maintenance/repairs it will at least be a bit quieter. As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health in particular.
There is SO much in Mustie1 videos that's *essential* mechanic knowledge that's never taught in any vo-tech school. It is learned only through years of turning wrenches and getting filthy.
A guy I worked with years ago used your cut and weld crossmember trick to change the timing gears on an Opel Rekord P1. The engine would have had to be removed to allow access, but he said no way, let's fire up the torch. I can't say I blame either of you guys!

Just what I was thinking!!
Good morning from Ecuador
I agree🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
It would have been a bit of a surprise if the ball mod already was done to the engine. But a nice surprise then.
I had to call my buddy about that trick so many situations that can be used.
I don't understand why Mustie doesn't have over 1M subscribers. His videos are great fun to watch.
Lack of clickbait titles and sensationalism is my guess. What appeals to the mindless masses is not what appeals to Mustie viewers -- wouldn't have it any other way.

I was stumped at how you would get that pin out and then mustie comes out with a glove! Genius! I never would have thought and that’s why I watch.
