- I picked up this trashed 1972 vw karmann ghia to save a painted but never assembled 1974 that was missing most of it's parts. but for now lets see what the parts car has to offer.

Never heard Mustie so concerned about paint condition 😂😋😋
Most times he's working on junk to have fun with, but occasionally he'll find a gem and shows how much pride he has in his stuff, like that mercury from a couple years ago.
"It's not terrible but definitely showing it's age" so am I so am I 😔👍
Sad part nowadays is finding a car younger than yourself and it needs alot of resto😂 nice Ghias.
The Karmann Ghia reminds me of our family car in the 1950's. It was a Studebaker Commander we called "Black Magic" because the doors popped open when you went over a bump.
The Bob Ross of car paint. He even has the hair.
thank you
@@vwnut1967 When is the vwnut1967 Chia Pet coming out? I will buy one.
PS. Put out some content. Has UA-cam been hiding you from me?
I checked. UA-cam put me on a diet, took you out of my feeds. Will catch up.
Is he wearing a wig??
@@xcalibre222 nope all natural
Back in the early 70's we used to take the button out of the parking brake to make it easier to do parking brake turns so it would release quickly. Back then you could pickup a non running VW Beetle for less then $50 and throw in a running engine and then thrash on it. We sold several runners with good body pans to people building Dune Buggy's for $500- $800 after an investment of about $100 or less. People would buy them new and drive them until they burned a valve and then park them in the backyard.
THAT ... SCALPING.
But What TH do I expect from a fiat currency system.
SMFH...
🤨😔Greed, the OBVIOUS TAX
Mustie1 put put up the Bat signal, and Brian to the rescue. I like this Karmann Ghia. Black is so hard to keep happy, but what a look when its right. More sparks, Gas, and puffs of smoke, and safety 3rd, and good as used. Mustie1 credo. He keeps it real. VW king. 5150VW and Mustie1 making the VW happening.
Used the parts mobile as a BAt mobile. That would look cool. Pull the VW engine & swap it with a small JFS.
Yup, Brian did a great job on the outer paint work.
Oooh… SUPER HD!😂 I don’t own an old VW but these videos are what brought me to this channel. These videos are the best. Almost makes me wanna make a bad financial decision and buy an old VW 😅
Really enjoying this series. Can hardly wait to see the black one back together.
The episodes with Brian are always the most exciting!
Hey just seen your movie.
Lol
He's starting to look like a middle-aged Sammy Hagar!
I love how mustie says it has no brakes then proceeds to floor it everywhere
“Staying dry? Oh you bitch”. We can all relate. 😂
If your scratches are white, they are in the clear coat and you can sand them away. Id use some dish soap, 1500 or so wet/dry paper and a foam sanding pad and just block them away. Constantly watch for white residue, that is clear. It isnt the end of the world to spray more clear but that is a project of its own. I use a system where you polish in stages using the same compound but different color coded sponge pads vs. several different compounds.
Two restorred vehicles I have don't have clear coats. It's just a main coat or coats. the repair for a clear coat is way more headache. I'm sure it's for other ; just not me.
The problem with that is people are not using paint and primers correctly so it’s very easy to sand through, or more likely burn through paint and have it peel off primer.
You got a great parts car that even yard drives, that's a win.
Good to see Brian, like an old friend you haven't seen in awhile.
Nice work Brian, even if you can't get the scratches out without destroying the paint.
Going to be a build I look forward to.
That body has come up really well, nice work. Love those wheels, look forward to future progress
It's a bummer when you have to fix something new before you fix what you wanted to fix in the first place. Thanks for another cool video!
Carmin Ghia sure was a cool car way back when ! 😊😊😊
Female cousin bought new from vw. Dealer in oct 71 brought my 8mm camer took vid of Carson showroom. Floor. Alas still looking for film
Brian has that Sammy Hagar thing going on....LOL!!
With that VW he surely could say "I can't drive 55" XD
Not a good look for him, but whatever (cringe)
LoL...I was going to ask if he was related to Sammy!
I just replied that!
Muskie, this is the nicest paint of any car you ever showed us on your channel. Those scratches will polish out, no doubt. Somebody did a fantastic job on that car.
Man, that's one sweet looking car. Love to see it fully restored! Be Awesome.
That window can be buffed out. Use the same compound that you use on the panels as you would on the window.
You might consider using headlights that have a turn signal bulb embedded within the light.
Loving this series and cannot wait to see the final result - Mustie1 always delivers😀😀
Oh I TOTALLY forgot today was Sunday!! I've been SO buys this past week, YES! Mustie1 on the Karmann Ghia!!
So much potential. Looking forward to the finished product, Darren. Stay well.
Instead of putting bullet style indicators on the front, get a modern led replacement headlamp with integrated indicators. Also, the glass window can be polished to remove light scratches. I'd also borrow a paint thickness tester, so you can see what you have to work with when wet sanding.
besides them being illegal here.. the ones I have seen really look out of place because of the harsh light they make
You can get a European style glass headlight (H4?) assembly with incandescent bulb and integrated "city light" running light. Replace white city light bulb with orange, voila, you have a running/turn signal light. Technically illegal for on-road use in US but they work
Don’t expect a reply ,I’ve watched everyone of Mustie 1 videos and he’s only replied once in like 5 years
I came on here to suggest the same thing, might not be the look he’s going for but it’s worth suggesting considering the car’s already been modified so it won’t be restored to factory, and once the holes are cut it’s a lot of work to go back.
Great car. Can’t wait to see it completed. Love the video!! Thanks for all of your hard work! D
Thank you for taking the time to record what you do! As a fairly new creator, I totally understand the time and effort required!!
Aftermarket headlights with integrated indicators would make it look clean on the front end
That's going to be a great looking car when you're done. Good luck Mustie!
Looks like a decent donor car... always learn something new each time I watch...it having a one piece body..kinda amazing..you VW guys in the know have all the ends and outs on these things. Looking forward to seeing this project come together.. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge and skills with us 😎🛻🚜🚛🛠️🔧🇺🇸
43:30 in the 70s, I saw a railway crew with a VW engine using 2 cylinders for a compressor, was in a self contained sand-blasting / water blasting trailer. Cleaning platforms and sidings.
Glad you will be doing regular video's on this car, it's a good looking car, and i am looking forward to seeing it come back to life. G-d bless.
Well I never expected when you premiered this last week it would be running on the Mustie1 test track before the end of this week's episode. Got to agree that black paint is mostly gorgeous.
Enjoying your Gaia series, brings back memories of my 1970 Ghia that I loved. It had the electric stick shift that was great during the fuel embargo of the early 1970s I coasted just by touching the shifter to save gas.
Good morning Darren. Thank you again for a wonderful start to a Sunday morning.
I have found the aftermarket tach will cause the backfire issue on VW. I have always loved the old Karmann Ghia, can't wait to see your finished product 👍
You're ideas with me are spot on!!! Love them!! Can't wait until next week!!
Funny I didn't even consciously notice the cricket till you mentioned it, but I had subconsciously assumed you were burning the midnight oil filming this
I heard it straight up.... but thought it was at my end... until he mentioned it.
It's an awesome weekend when a Mustie1 episode pops up on Saturday then another on Sunday.
This is definitely going to be a really great series.
I don't believe Darren has done a series restoring a Karmen Ghia that I know of.
He got seriously lucky with both engines in such good condition.
Especially the one in the parts donor possibly having been rebuilt.
Just needs the correct carb or rebuild that one.
I love watching him rebuilding carbs.
Always good for lots of chuckles.
He did fix one up years ago, a red one, he did a budget built in his garage at home.
The driving test reminded me of driving a early '60's Olds in a field near my house when I was 14-some kids never grow up-and that's a compliment my friend-thank you !
It's good to see that you are working with Sammy Hagar again!😂
Thankfully you have a Great sense of humor to laugh through these projects, and the mental fortitude to Never Quit! Great job!
That paint job is incredible! It actually looks like chrome in a certain light!
That would be awesome with the chrome rims. It looks like a awesome project. Can't wait to see the process.
Looking forward to this series. Great watching them so far 😃
Good Mornin' Mr. Mustie! Ready to watch more on this Karmann Ghia!
When I was growing up in Miami Florida there was a guy there that was an excellent metal fabricator and welder... Anyway, I watched him cut two ghias down the middle lengthwise and weld the two halves one from each other back together and make a flawless Karmann Ghia... He was truly talented...
Anyway, I always enjoy watching your content... I think our idea of humor is a lot alike 😂😂😂
That car would look good with a red interior.
She's a runner for sure. The black one looks like they were trying to get the 1965 Shelby Cobra style there. Bumpers of something like that might look great on her as well. Reproduction rear bumpers are around $400, but I think it might look sweet on her. Just not sure if something lile that would fit.
this is turning into a very great series, can't wait for the next episode 😊.
Great video! Awesome project car. love watching your videos.
Thanks mustie excellent video really looking forward to seeing the series on this car's rebirth 😊😊😊😊
We never really grow up. The thrill of the first drive!
Nice to see Brian finally grew that excellent hair out again.
As a balding man, I get offended when people like Brian, with such a blessing on top of his head, SPIT in the faces of us baldies by shaving that lovely shock of hair off. 🤣
To the humor disabled, I'm kidding (sorta). 😉
Nice to see vwnut1967 again. 👍😉
BEST. CHANNEL. EVER.
Greetings from Australia!
Hey you can polish scratches out of glass with Jewelers Rouge . It will easily remove those in the parts car windows .
"She just needed a nap." I never heard that one before. Still giggling.
Thanks for the shop time Mustie1! Look forward to the series!
I feel like am in the garage with you man looking over your shoulder. Brilliant 🎉
That was so fun seeing the parts car run and drive, love it! I have the perfect car for that Type I engine and sent an email message to your business address. Such a coincidence you are fixing up a black Ghia... I used to ride around in the back of my grandpa's 1969 black Karman Ghia as a young kid. It was brand new back then and he was very picky about having little kids in or near that car but I got to ride along to church and the grocery store in it.
Love this car series. Please continue with it on channel. Please?
Your sound Quality is always!" Excellent!" You know what your doing!" Exactly ! I GIVE! THIS channel 10 Stars 🌟 and you explain. Clearly Exactly what you! Are doing! To help other people! Awesome job always a Fan sincerely William Oberlander
Looks like a nice car. Good donor car too. Thanks for sharing! 👍😊
Wish to have dad, like you Mustie! (I never had dad) You are the best, funny, so clever and skilled, love you!
Good one Darryn! Old black betty should look great with chrome wheels! Welcoming the next video in the series.
Haven't heard the Leverite comment in a number of years. Always liked the styling of the ghia.
best part is the loud puff backfires through the carb followed by the laugh, all from 50 yards away...
Love that patented Mustie giggle when it turns over the first time. Thanks for sharing your love of old sh:t boxes with the rest of us.
Whoever laid down the paint on the black car is a Rembrandt of auto painting. Gorgeous!
When my sons and I were rebuilding their bugs seats we went to a carpet store and they gave us carpet padding scraps and we used it in place of the old crushed horse hair padding. We stacked and glued the padding for thickness we wanted. It worked great.
Nice Mustie,I love it when you play with Vdubs!
Recouping funds is always a good thing
Kudos to Brain...that's mind numbing work even with 420.......
Was rather obvious from the dust that the little jewel was surrounded with body shop.
And kudos to the paint man...
Most Importantly, Thank YOU Mustie for another content loaded video.
CHEERS
Love this series! Just got a Ghia here!
Always interesting keeping the costs down is good too. You have a chitty chitty bang bang. Keep these videos coming.
Such a cool project! I'm envious.
Great to see Brian again 😊
Mustie1, Thanks for the update. Glad the parts donar has a good engine!
They look decent for a Sport's car, looks like you got some fun out of it, thanks for sharing, all the best to yous and your loved ones
The Mustie 1 laugh, its great, even from a distance.
Brilliant video looking forward to seeing the next one 👌
I forgot how much larger you shop is, nice to have plenty of space. Looking forward to seeing the black Ghia finished.
Great video love watching them 😊
That donor got you a good engine to put on the shelf you did very well on that one.
Good find, this will make the project so much easier to finish.
Try filling in the scratches with some clear coat, when it dries use some 1000 and a block to take down the high spots, buffing too much can thin the paint and spider cracks will appear. I ❤️ watching ur videos here in Tanzania, look forward to seeing them. Keep up the good work 😊
As always bro this video made for great viewing. Sounds a good engine combo for another project. Brian made a nice job too. Safe travels. Ken.
I would drive the parts car like that lol wife has wanted one for years. Enjoy the content have a good day and stay safe Jimmy from North Attleboro Massachusetts
That was funny, Mustie1 said; I didn't say we go for a long ride🤣 carburetor needs work
I love Brian's assessment. "It's fine!" Take it home!
Wow Brian's done a terrific job bringing that pair back up to snuff she's looking sweet.
Four ot steel wool will buff most of the scratches from the side window excellent video awesome content thank you for sharing this with us six stars brother
hohoho... nice to see the Devil Dog. I love it when Brian works his magic on a cars pain. He has a lot of patience for this type of job.
“Thicker but smaller - story of my life” and “kinda sucks when your rubber leaks” back to back 😂🐐
Hellyea gotta rock that DD214 shirt
Congrats, Mustie1, on your foray into the poor man's Porsche! I wonder if someone put high(er)-compression heads on the red car's engine? The high readings -- with the "tuned exhaust," tach and 2bbl carb -- makes me imagine the previous owner wanted a high-perf 1600 engine. Those 2bb center carbs gave the engine more lung-power but were usually jetted too rich out of the box. This one sounds like it's pretty close. The tip-off is how smoothly it transitions from idles to mains -- and a smelly exhaust. I hope you use that engine in the black Ghia. Get it looking sharp and shiny, part out the red Ghia to recover your investment!
Or he COULD just drop a Subie engine in it (that's short for Subaru) save himself a lot of trouble looking for unobtainimum. Mighty Car Mods did this years ago with some impressive results.
G'day you blokes
Looking good, thanks Mr D & Brian, you're a good mate.👍
Lawn mower gas tank, JNC jump starter, vice grips holding choke open, pipe holding engine hatch open, bungee cord holding front trunk hatch down ..... test driving a Mustie-mobile.
You can polish that scratches away from the glass. You can see how if you look at Mik Bergsma and Cona the Volkswagen.
It's one of the latest episodes, so you don't have to watch all 65 or how many it is.
It makes the glass looks like new, and that's of course what you'll want on such a nice car.
Resin bond - fiberglass repair
Polishing can be done with jewelers rouge but it takes a while and depends how deep the scratches are.
Plus you can polish distortion in to the glass .
Wth is bergsma and cona wth are you talking about??
@@dreammaker730If they are more than just surface scratches it should be possible to use a windshield repair kit. Might be worth testing before starting to try to rub away enough glass to remove them.
LOL!
