  • At long last we finally get to ride the all-new, 2017 Honda CBR1000RR and CBR1000RR SP. Not only that, but Honda chose to debut the literbike at the demanding Portimao racetrack in Portugal. Honda completely revamped the bike, shedding weight everywhere it could while upping power a modest amount.
The result? Let Motorcycle.com's Troy Siahaan tell you. He got to pilot Honda's new flagship sportbike, while battling a cold, where he delivers his first ride impressions - without a voice!

People with the power complaint, keep on mind Honda operates mainly with one main philosophy.
    SMOOTH POWER DELIVERY AND BALANCE.
Smooth allows very predictable power and when you're midcorner, an unpredictable jump in power causes hectic cornering results.
It has been created to be slung around corners with a completely smooth delivery of power allowing its exit speed to make up for its slight power lack.
Consistency is key to building speed. I'll take the slightly less powerful bike, with a great power delivery, over a less predictable more powerful bike.

@@doncappo1509 fun is had in the corners. My friends on 1000s can never keep up to my 600 in the twisties. I carry lessw mechanical weight and can push 5-10mph faster than them around the bends. I can still do a power wheelie up through second, but my dirtbike can do it all the way up to 4th. Sportbikes aren't designed for only wheelies. Real riders know true mechanical prowess is found in the corners.

Now I ride a Yamaha Vmax because my girl is always on the back, and its still a 10 second bike lol. Much more comfortable and it sounds like a cammed V8 rather than a weed wacker. Not as good in the corners but still a damn hoot with 140hp.

I like Honda's liter bike direction: better handling and reducing weight. Making it as light as a 600. Every liter bike out there have plenty of HP for us mortals.

So basically, they just took the old blade and lightened the weight up, added a little hp and slapped on some electronic rider aides on it. Imo, the weight reduction is the best upgrade on it.

Weight is the enemy on the street. Year ago I purchased a brand new 1976 Triumph T140V Bonneville 750. I raced every motorcycle on the streets of Long Island in N.Y. She won every race for 10 consecutive years. She never ever allowed a street racer but a wheel in front of her, if that even started to happen it was a couple of downshifts and wide open throttle. My Bonneville came from the factory with a 4130 chrome-molly frame and weighed in at 395 lbs wet. I ended up removing the seat, and the heavy mufflers and got the weight down to around 365 lbs. The only other mod was to put on drag bars. She never lost. Stock motor, stock Dunlap K70H tires, I did removed the blinkers.
Then I took her out again in 1992 she was 16 years old and kind of c;lapped out. She still won every race. Yes there was that 1992 Kawasaki Ninja 1100 cc fuel injected bike that made me cry on a long long straight section because the Kaw was doing 179 mph as admitted by the loser later on. He was wearing full track leathers. So he was a serious dude. I never gave up and caught the Kaw as it had to slow down from 179mph for an exit turn. I caught the Kaw in mid turn and passed it. The race was on for a moving 1/4 mile and I beat that SOB to the hair pin turn and he almost T-Boned me mid chassis. We raced 100 yards to the parking lot I got there first and he still kept trying and we were on coal slag and gravel which would rip our flesh off. I obliged him and beat him to the front door. I parked, pulled out the key and dismounted just as he pulled up. The onlookers only saw the last 3 sections but they all agreed I had won.
Funny, but we were not suposed to race that night as I had just installed a torn rocker cover gasket which was now leaking oil all over the right side of my rear tire. Long Island is about 10 miles wide. We were supposed to have a night time ride from a Hamburger Joint Named Nediks in Commack located on the North shore in Suffolk County Long Island and ride to the O.B.I South a Bar located over the Robert Moses Bridge near Fire Island on the South shore of Long Island but that dick head had to pass me. My Bonneville would not let that stand. Yes on the 10 mile long straight I was actually crying (but kept ducking my head /helmet under the wind with my chin on the gas cap and then looking side way's at the white pebbles flashing by in the road surface to see if I was going straight without actually looking at the road ahead of me. I was completely out of the wind. On that 10 mile long straight section the Kaw was so far ahead it was only a speck. My T140V had never been headed or beaten and she insisted that I keep the throttle wide open (closing it every 30 second or so so as to suck up some much needed oil to the head as per my owners manual) and told me she would catch him in the get off turn which she did, she kept her promise. The rest was of the race was all her's. She beat that 1992 Kawasaki Ninja 1100cc Fi and we had many witnesses. Light weight and handling is the key to victory on the streets. My Triumph never blew up while beating every road race bike on the road, name it she beat it, Honda 1992 V4 1000cc Interceptor, 1975 Norton 850 Commando, a 1979 Laverda SF750C, she never lost. I still have my Triumph from 1976 and she sits' around 20 feet from me as I tell you all this.
I like this new Honda, really I do but I am sure 430 pounds is too heavy for me. I would be better off with the 2017 Triumph 675 R which weighs only 368 pounds ready to go. Handling and light weight wins over horse power, especially on the street. I'm in Tennessee now and the roads around me are all narrow back roads. I'm pretty sure my old Bonneville could still win against anyone on anything. But I no longer race. I'm 67 years old and most of my riding is on my 2015 Harley-Davidson FLHP Road King Police and I usually go along at an average of 25 mph on the back roads and breath in the fresh air and take in the sun shine and view. I am thankful for my life.
I hope everyone has a great riding season this year and next.

The SP weighs as much as the STD version because the semi-active suspension is a lot heavier than the regular forks on the regular Blade. To offset the extra weight Honda used a ton of titanium parts in every component ranging from engine to the fairing bolts to be comparable with the standard bike's weight.

I bought an SP1 to do track days, the electronics are tied into the standard tyre size and gearing. You cannot buy tyres suitable for circuits in the 190 50 profile, if you put anything else on the bike doesn’t work properly. I’ve contacted Honda who agree I will get a problem if I switch tyre sizes and told me to go back to the OE tyres. If you ride on the road and are happy with the OE tyres the bike is great, if you go on circuits buy something else.

Well.. Your old gixxer may have the same weight (the german 2006-model however was 7kg heavier than the new blade; the 2007 gixxer was already 19kg heavier), but it has less power and less electronics that make all that power really useable. On paper, the gixxer may be nearly as fast as the new CBR (or any new supersport). On the road, when average Joe is riding it, the new Fireblade will be a lot faster than the gixxer (or any other supersport from that time).

BFD15i No, it won't. The average joe won't even be faster on a Superbike than on a sports tourer, Especially on the road. Because it may be 2 seconds faster on a track ridden by a pro, it does not translate to the Country roads. Even though i ride streetfighters, i would prefer a K5 to any newer Supersport. The K5 doesn't need any electronics, its far from heavy, the seating position is far less tiring, and the suspension is perfect for german roads, At least in West-Germany! ;-)

Ruano09 you must go for the bmw then, rsv4 isn't as agile as the new fireblade ,homdas are more flickeable, more stable amd lighter, plus riding a honda then going for a vike with a lil bit a jerky throttle throttle is a bit chaotic. If you want flickering and agility s1000 is almost equal to this machine.

i really wish you guys had like....lap times...
or 0-60.... brake distance.... cornering G force....
all this review does is vomit back up the marketing wank papers that honda gave you....
give us some some real world numbers.......saying "the new engine is a monster over the old one" doesnt mean JACK SHIT
    "engine power has DIFINATLY increased"
    BY HOW FUCKING MUCH!!!!
could the bike have the same hp, but just be lighter?
we have no way of knowing......
    their no real info here.....
    "it has wheelie control"
cool, thanks, totally could not read hondas website and the feature list their.....

So Kain, lets suppose Honda offers to fly you to Portugal, or where ever their next launch is, and lets you rip around the track on their new super bike? But they didn't bother to bring a dyno and TSA wouldn't let you haul one in your carry on luggage because it weighs about a ton and won't fit in the overhead compartment. The other journalists get all touchy when you try to come to a dead stop on the front straight and pull out your measuring tape to figure how long it took to stop from 60 mph and you have no one to hold that radar gun you brought along to confirm when you going 60 mph for your brake test - can't trust a speedo for 100% accuracy ya know. How would you acquire those hard numbers? I suppose you could get your lap times using a smart phone app but then without you having another brand of superbike with the same tires bike to compare your laptime to, said lap time is not going to tell us a whole lot other then how fast or slow Kain can circle Portimao. I guess you could also carry along a GPS data acquisition pack and ask Honda if they wouldn't mind you strapping it on the pillion of the CBR but then again with no competitors bikes to compare the G-force numbers to, those cornering G-force numbers won't tell us a whole lot. However, you could let John McGuinness ride the bike with the data acquisition unit and compare your performance to his if you want to give your audience some hard numbers to compare. My point is, it's a manufacturer sponsored and controlled bike launch. Bike launches are traditionally used for getting riding impressions, photos, and videos of a bike. Stateside shootouts are better suited for "some real world numbers".

As usual it's the "can't tell if it's better than the competition". When is a maker going to release something that changes the game again? Infact when is Honda going to do more than a face lift on this?

In my opinion Honda's sport bikes always look timeless. Some other manufacturers look cool, but can get old. The only exception for me is the CBR1000RR-R which looks horrible. That being said, it's not about looks in this segment, it's about results (and sales).

Front of the bike & side fairings are definitely lackluster "could grow on me but I doubt it".
I've always been a Honda guy but see no reason to upgrade.

This machine seems like an utter snooze fest compared to what Yamaha came out with in 2015. The R1 was a big leap forward, this CBR clearly shows Honda is once again playing it safe.

    • @cagednm69

big leap forward where? It still gets its ass handed to it in Superstock 1000 and WSBK by a 2008 Fireblade for crying out loud.
