With a world-class house band and fantastic special guests - from longtime favorites to exciting new voices - it’s something you just have to see for yourself!
So listen closely- This is not just a cookie cutter version of Joni...this is someone who has sat, and absorbed...Joni. And has paid deep respect to her in the process. And, for those of us who were just 16 at the time, bleeding, and in need of a reprieve from the stink of our lives; we thank you Aoife.
For here at the far end of of it all you are honoring her voice and somehow keeping the healing in motion...."I wish there was a river I could skate away on"....
Theresa Mason before seeing your thoughts, was thinking wow! 😳 how beautiful this rendition, not many can do a Joni song justice❣️she hit me in the heart 💜
@Theresa Mason
Yes! I felt it too.
I've been deconstructing this song and its lyrics and meaning ever since I heard for the first time when it came out....I finally found out, accidentally. What a master at her craft. I just sit here and weep.
I've not listened yet -- tho. I just can't bring myself to let another musician cover it. . it's just too special -- but you say this is the real thing..... so here goes......
and I saw two stops on the tour -- but she wasn't there.
I don't believe that any other group of musicians could have done as much justice to that classic masterpiece. Hats off to all of you.
I concur, well said my man!
Riveting...fantastic...perfect
Yes, the interaction of the musicians ... the expression and feeling of Aoife - and Chris is always a genius.
Lovely take and all but those guys playing live with Joni on the '79 tour are the very heroes these folks are emulating. They did it all of the justice one could ever ask for forty years earlier.
Love this group , great job. Listen to Hejira doing the song .
Setting aside Aoife's great performance, the standout here, for me, is Mike Elizondo on the bass - what beautiful phrasing and tone
Spot on...Paco's ghost in the background... too good.
He's been listening to Jaco Pastorius
Love hearing those echoes of Jaco.
I agree whole heartedly. Magical playing, Im sure you know approves. :)
Big shoes , those Jako P shoes
Nobody is Joni other than Joni, but it matters that others can sing Joni's songs and Aoife earned the right to sing this song.
We cannot go back forty years, although we can still hear the recordings..
I play a few Joni songs, even though I cannot do justice to her, as hard as I try.
Music needs to be played to be kept alive. Where would music be if no one played Bach because they couldn't do it justice?
And yes, Joni is Joni! Thank heaven we still have her!
Wow, I didn't think I'd ever hear someone capture the cadence and expression of Joni Mitchell in this or any of her songs. I am thoroughly impressed. Well done.
This is one of their best ever covers ever! Mike Elizondo, Chris and Band totally in the pocket. Aoife is truly outstanding and on top of her game. Gives me chills to watch it.
"chills" -exactly!
I don't think anyone covers Joni better than Aoife. The band is superb.
Kami Maltz and Josh Lee Turner can do a pretty good job. ua-cam.com/video/t-xl44vFgfE/v-deo.html
She really gets Joni, and the band is spot on. Really nice cover that has its own character, yet keeps true to the spirit of the song!
It should be called Live from here with Chris Thile and Aoife O’Donovan. She is astoundingly talented.
She contains multitudes - I doubt that NPR and LFH could contain her, but it is wonderful that Thile is able to bring so many gifted women to join on his microphones.
but not really soooooo….it’s Chris who is exposing her on his gig, not the other way around right?
There are some artists no one should ever have the nerve to cover. Joni Mitchell is surely one of those. And yet, this is great.
Aoife is just incredible here, I love her. This entire ensemble is top shelf.
All world class musicians !
the respect and love she has for one of Joni's most famous songs,is evident . immersing herself ,completely -without flourishes or embellishment into the being of Coyote, we forget ,any ONE singer , becoming another "prisoner of the white lines" .
Excellent version of this classic. It’s 35 years since I first saw “The Last Waltz” in which Joni performs this. Aoife really does this justice , and the band is just top notch.
Such a gorgeous rendition. The band is so hot on this track and Aoife is an absolute treasure.
This was one of those magic moments when Singer, Band and song are perfectly aligned . Fantastic !
One of the best and most complex Joni Mitchell songs in a delightful version by Aoife
World Class talent on that stage ! You can tell Aoife really respects Joni in the way she approaches this. Not just any old cover. This is exceptional, and Chris Thile is a world class musical genius.
Aoife is the real deal. I would love to see her produce a complete recording of Joni's work. This is an incredible performance. Do yourself a favor and look for the video of her in the studio doing "Turn Me On, Im a Radio". It is spellbinding.
Huge Joni fan for the better part of 50 years. And I just love Aoife's voice. A new favorite
Her album Fossils is one of my favorite albums I have heard for a good while....
the degree of difficulty extremely high, the high bar of the original, but this manages to not fall short. Well done! Wish Joni could have recorded with today's technology.
Growing up, my father used to gripe about how the word "awesome" is entirely over-used, especially in circumstances that don't warrant the word. But this, my friend, is AWESOME.
Oh my that is so beautiful and complex
I love the little lick that mike Elizando does at 3:10 and Chris Thile Immediately acknowledges it with a little yell!
😊
Magnificent, beautiful interpretation of "Coyote"--really does justice to the original by the great Joni Mitchell.
Joni is a goddess and a legend. Watch the version of Coyote from the 70's where Joni looks like the brain in the room with Bob Dylan and Roger McGuin at Lightfoot's house. If she were a man, Joni, would truly be placed on the highest pedestal for a musician...but musicians who know, know that one like Joni comes but once in a century.
Joni is highly regarded. She has stood her ground for decades and outlasted lots of the dudes.
She nailed it!
I just saw online that A'oife is coming to perform in a small theater ten minutes from my house in March. Guess where I will be...there is a reason why I'm With Her is one of the best bands in the world right now, A'oife is one third of that reason... Just wow!!!!
Anthony Salvati at home :-(
I had tickets to see a Live From Here performance in my city.... It was going to be in May. Postponed, then canceled....
I did get to see I'm With Her last year. I think "Aoife" is Gaelic for "Angel from heaven in human form". Amazingly talented.
I'm here because David Crosby said this cover might be even better than the original. He may be right. Beautiful work.
I loved watching this video for several reasons. 1 I love Jackson Browne’s voice and lyrics 2 an attentive audience …no whooping or yeehawing 3 nobody filming on mobile phones …just listening
She sings with her whole being - body, spirit, soul, hands, legs, eyes, feet, lungs, tongue, both brain hemisperes - a glorious itch nobody can completely scratch, and infectious. Thanks God, for Joni, Aoife, Chris, this tight skilled band, public radio - and whoever the Coyote is and was. I wonder if O'Donovan will age in the direction Joni Mitchell demonstrates, say, in her 2000 'Both Sides Now' album, channeling Billie Holiday and embodying a merger of Alberta and New York.... Probably not - instead, let's enjoy Ms. O'D. and celebrate as she unfolds in her own Way. Case in point: ua-cam.com/video/-bg2yc55VMg/v-deo.html. Aoife and Eric Jacobsen had a daughter, Ivy Jo, in 2017 - what a gestation that girl had!
Coyote said to be Sam Shepherd
Just left me breathless ! Aoife is truly gifted as you s this amazing group of musicians .
Goosebumps,...over and over again. They are so tuned in to such a hard song.
Chris Thile is such an outstanding musician but he never showboats.
Heart wanting to burst out of my chest listening to this ❤️.
Every time.
Such a tough song to do justice -- and you did it beautifully.
I agree - a difficult song - and a great cover version.
Her voice lines up with Joni's really nicely but it's definitely got its own thing too. A very exciting performance 👍
Great way to put it
Nicely done folks, Joni would be proud of that effort!
My all time favorite Joni song! Performed very well, no doubt. I love how restrained Chris plays here.
I'm so glad you split this one out. This was just about the best of the best of the best.
It's a beautiful experience to listen to Aoife O'Donovan. She is so talented. I am going deep inside myself when I enjoy her song and the music of the band... like in meditation.
While listening yet one more time - it brought me back to LONG AGO when I first got the vinyl with this great Jazz / Rock bluesy masterpiece ! It has great feel, lyrics that hold you in the moment and take you along for the ride ... had forgotten how that feels. Thank you all, MS. O'Donovan - you are an incredible talent. Kudos, jj
Beautiful! I love this version of coyote!
Hi Aoife, by chance I listened to you Interpretation on joni‘s songs. This was a great incidences as I got to know your great music. I‘m thankful to get in touch with such great music, which is not s give. Nowadays
"He's too far from the Bay of Fundy" I've never even been there, but I get this line completely
superb cover--goose bumps--chris is great too--aoife and everybody is in top form--deserves more views
Joni is a very high standard. Nice job you guys.
And so now I start my day, thank you Aoife.
Wow... brilliant, I LOVE it... every bit as much as the original.
Great interpretation of this outstanding song. I assume Joni is appreciating this, too
Ive been singing Joni's songs since the early 70's...I love Aoife's voice on this song...
Sweet Licks on the Mandolin - Chris Thile, great replica of that funky BASS line and to make JONI MAGIC permeate the atmosphere .... BOOM ! That Aoife O'Donovan does it again .... so great, Good Lady ! Thanks, GBjj
astonishingly exquisitely good. RIP, Live From Here. 💔
simply lovely
What a nice generation of talents....
You just made it your's! Amazing.
Like Jerry Joni will never be replaced....thankfully their are some who can interpret and perform their music....its a blessing for all that talent exists and will continue to enchant us all
Jesus. Goosebumps.
Bravo! This just popped up in my youtube playlist. VERY GOOD rendition.. both singer and musicians.
beautiful
Happy happy birthday Joni !?🎼🎵🎵
I have to agree Len. Spectacular tone and playing!
This brilliant cover by Aoife with the LFH band, blend mostly elements from Joni's legendary "shadows and light", with a hint of the album version. Aoife has covered Joni on various songs over the years, but this is golden! Despite the fact he is facing away from the band, and has only two congas, and plays shaker partway thru, Abe brings the feel of what the late great Don Alias brought to this classic. Mike, channeling the spirit of Jaco! Jon Cowherd added piano, sounding very Lyle Mays like, even though their is no piano track on S&L. He and Chris do a great job of filling in bits here and there, in lieu of Pat Metheny's harmonics and flourishes. Alex adds the light touch later. Absolute perfect arrangement.
Wonderful singing and musicianship
Stunning. Just stunning. All.
Yeah Aoife, great choice....and well done. Happy birthday, Joni the genius.
Superb. Must be very hard to cover a Joni Mitchell song & do it justice. This does just that!
Nailed it with so much soul.
Sooo nice!!
Magic!! long live Joni!!
what a great song, y'all did it justice too
Awesome!
Happy birthday, Joni!
We didn't deserve this show while it lasted. Musicianship was generally just insanely good.
Absolutely outstanding job!!!
Aoife, oh Aoife!!!
Bravo.
this is why i love Aoife...
This group did the song justice.
Very great interpretation of a real great song, at least for me ... Thank you so much!
Wow / outstanding / unreal / awesome....not much else to say....SO much talent!!!
Wow...amazing cover!
Simply heavenly.
Wonderful version staying close to the spirit of the original. Much appreciated.
I can't listen to this enough!
O.M.goodness. Too cool for school: you Jonied Joni. 💖
I love this so much.. Thanks guys!
.
WOW! What a phenomenal job!
Nice that is cool! Alfie does this Joni tune great justice and song-soul delivery!
Bravo!!!
And this folks is what you call a band (drummer for 50 years)
Nice job, Aofie! Shadows and Light is likely my favorite live music recording, and you do it justice.
Awesome singing from the first note!!! Also the band is absolutely fantastic.
Beautifully done.
Spectacular.
Aoife and the LFH Band nailing one of my favorite Joni tunes? 🎯😳🤯💙💙
Wonderful.
An interview with David Crosby complementing Aoife's cover sent me here. I normally hate covers of Joni because they're almost always 3rd rate versions of the original. But this interpretation is truly great!
Great version of this wonderful song...The Band is right on. Mike is killing Jaco's bass part. Love it.
Not bad, but "killing" Jaco's parts? Nah...
love it
amazing
