This is superb. My daughter recently commented that music is good for the soul, live music invigorates it. This is a perfect embodiment of that sentiment.
It is moments like these that show why LFH will produce pure musical brilliance. Take a classic song, add audience sing-a-long, an improvisational jam, along with Aoife's Crooked Still band mates, then enjoy the listening bliss they create. Love the dual fiddling (goosebumps).
Kudos to the guy in the audience who screamed out this request- your clever spontaneity has been rewarded with this sonic monument of enduring beauty :) ❤
Is that the story? This was spontaneous response to audience request? It's the best single song I've ever heard; I'm 80 years old. The energy and communication are like none other
@@estherleedavenport5273 yes, Esther Lee- I was there in the live audience that night, and much to Chris's delight, someone shouted out this request spontaneously, in the moment. Chris replied something along the lines of "well, someone's been thinkin'!" and proceeded to coordinate the band in preparation of playing this song in this style. The only word that comes to my mind for what happens at the Town Hall is: magic.
I should also add the relevance of the request for context: the unofficial "theme" of that show's evening was "weather," so obviously this impromptu suggestion was highly apropos.
Thank You Chris Thile and team for some of the most beautiful music that has ever brightened my days. You did a wonderful job and will be missed sadly.

Damn, Chris is singing like a champ nowadays. I love this song. Makes me so homesick for the good ol' days in the Blue Ridge of my youth. Love from Bangkok.

Twas a serendipitous morphing of their two bands - Chris's AND Aoife's, on a perfectly ancient song, & Chris knows just how to wring every drop of fun out of a LFH encore including audience participation in a soulful a cappella slow ending. but does he stop there? No! 2, 3, 4 jumps back into a righteously rollicking rocking instrumental finale, O! M! G! Long live Live From Here

The amazing thing about this performance is that keyboardist Brett Williams, drummer Marcus Gilmore and bass player and music director Mike Elizondo were not familiar with this song, they picked it up as they went! They added amazing improvisations.
Being in the house at Town Hall that night was simply magical. Sitting in the 5th row singing low harmony when Chris turns and calls the audience; like the house was just another member of the band. That is a thrilling, you are not going to forget This any time soon, maybe ever, kind of moment.
/agree She got my attention when I found Crooked Still but she keeps showing me things... like Yo-Yo Ma... he's been in my awareness for years but it was with Aoife and Chris on 'Here and Heaven' that I finally /got/ it...
What a fantastic performance. Tasteful solos from each, and that morphing from bluegrass lament to a sort of slow jam to full on bluegrass, then to an almost soul/power ballad. Then the audience singing under Chris's direction. Wonderful.
A colossal tragedy that they took this off the air. Hoping for better days ahead where Chris and the band can bring their sonic wizardry back into our lives.

Absolute Trust and Precision. Impeccability. Chris, Knowing that the vocals were weak - but the instrumentation Perfection - and integrated both into the end by forcing correction. Ended abruptly, but appropriately, on an instrumental masterpiece. Be easier to just practice the singing at least a Few times first be easier... but, instrumentally? Profound. And Loved the wrapup.

These "Live From Here" videos come across my feed, and I'm filled with mourning that LFH died from COVID. Such fabulous sets.

A drum solo that takes it steady, slow and subtle. I love this so much
This dude is the modern hero of this era!!Too intelligent, true to his beliefs,a regular guy but with a huge talent and energy!!!
Chris Thile is pushing the song forward - everybody gets their "say" - lovely evening in Town Hall, Ellen
I don't think I have ever heard anything so beautiful and so perfectly directed. All the hairs on my arms were straight up. Just amazing.
Acoustic music simply doesn't get any better than this. Aoife is such a treasure.
That bass solo - this song 😍😍
This is superb. My daughter recently commented that music is good for the soul, live music invigorates it. This is a perfect embodiment of that sentiment.
The Stray Birds- 'Best Medicine'

Never thought I would ever hear a drum solo in the middle of a bluegrass song! 😄
Actually the song Rain and Snow is decades older than bluegrass. :-)
If you wanna be a real purist about it, you probably shouldn't even hear a drum in a bluegrass song.
...and his cymbal went awol in the middle of it...damn, hate it when that happens (live)!
And WHAT A SOLO! Perfect control.
This is the version of this song I first ever heard. Then the Dead's. ua-cam.com/video/-YE6_JhOS20/v-deo.html

What great musicianship from everyone. Deep, deep respect...

Aoife's voice and harmonizing go straight to my soul! And a great job by all.
I gave you a “thumbs up” but that doesn’t quite say enough! Beautiful work!…

Yes!!! It is magic!!!!
Please Bring This Show Back!
You had me at Aoife, everything else was just delicious gravy poured all over with a coffee and Bailey's for afters.

@Fred- the Grateful Dead got me to love this song originally. You too?
Love the tempo and sultry drive in this song.
Listening to this is wonderful, but watching it is a magical experience.
I love watching musicians interact. Nothing beats making music with a group, rather than alone, either.
GENIUS - right before our very eyes people.
That choral moment at the end, dayum!! I wish I could be there!
What a fantastic performance. Tasteful solos from each, and that morphing from bluegrass lament to a sort of slow jam to full on bluegrass, then to an almost soul/power ballad. Then the audience singing under Chris's direction. Wonderful.
What musicianship, all around. And those two just winging those harmonies!... And Thile, of course, is supernatural.
A colossal tragedy that they took this off the air. Hoping for better days ahead where Chris and the band can bring their sonic wizardry back into our lives.
Yes it is! May be they will bring it back this year.

The Democratic expression of despair in this roots-driven tune offers everyone a chance to open our emotional and intellectual pores. Bravo.
wow, Chris, pure tao... poetry in motion, so this is what a fully actualized human looks like....thanks
WOW!! every one of the band members are certainly gifted.
Wow. Just, amazing! Thank you 🙏.
Pure improvisational genius.
WHAT A TREASURE!!! Brilliant performances from everyone.
What a great cover of this song. The Grateful Dead would be grateful. They wouls appreciate this.
Sorry "would"
.... nothing short of OUTSTANDING !!
This is class their is still good music out there thank God
Sublime! Brings tears to my eyes.
riding home from the mountain yesterday. This plays---tears and laughter....
Another magic moment with LFH.
Super! Great fusion!! 🎵🎵💟
Chris is like Tommy Emanuel a genius that loves seeing other people play well...
Laughed at the cymbal stand failure at 3:18 ! Marcus was unfazed.
Fantastic!
So god damn brilliant...I almost forgot to breathe
Goosebumps
Nice work Chris!!
They are filling some big shoes here. And doing it right! Cold rain and snow +
The patience. The dynamics. The chops. Oh man.
Yes sir eeee! Love it!
Thumbs up is not enough.
Bluegrass to funky blues jam,to Rollin hillbilly funk. I love you man!
Incredible.
So good!
Thank you!
So, so good
Love the transition from mandolin to banjo at 5:50!
Magic happened here!
Bloody brilliant.
Delicate music
One day I want to jam with Chris Thile.
Excellente
I’ve said it before; Aoife O’Donovan’s quite important. Does a lot of really good stuff. Contributes a lot. Generally, I mean. Not just on this video.
She's awful purty too!
All those summer holidays in Ireland may have had an influence , ☘️☘️☘️love Aoife Sarah and Sara, I’m With Her, just great☘️☘️☘️💚❤️💚
& don't forget solo Aoife, Sometimes Why, & so many colaberations! She can do no wrong.
LFH was a true American treasure... and they just threw it in the trash....
RIP live from here :(
What do you mean buy RIP?

Damn that bass sounds so good
But I thought the song was called “Cold Rain and Snow”!? How the heck can I enjoy it now? /s
The original is called "Rain and Snow" and dates back to the early 1900's
Bangin!
Chris Thile and Vulfpeck Bassist Joe Dart have super similar mannerisms and I cannot unsee it
hot damn when mike elizondo comes in with that bass...
really fun. I mean, really really fun.
WOW. the was NICE
Joe Cocker would be proud of Chris: the Rotating Rocker of the Mandolin! Great performance...
Absolute Trust and Precision.
Impeccability.

I love Pentangle's version of this song too!
that drum solo was sick af
It's got that 'ooh'!
Brutal cough timing from the audience at the very end
That bass solo at 2:00. Not a player, but it sounded simple but fantastic. Great mix too.
dang! I remember the old Grateful Dead version of this tune, and Tony Rice does a great job with it, but this is wild!
Great song!
They would fit in at Woodstock.
Didn't really need that crash anyway . . .
Just…Wow.
Wow
That's just smoking hot!
Great version. I recommended also the Pentangle version. Very different
When we get this Covid thing under control we could add Molly Tuttle to your rotating house band but otherwise awesome!
No clue what time you wrote this comment but this show got cancelled
Does anyone know the name of the banjo player, he looks very much like the man who played banjo during the Springsteen Seeger Sessions Tour.
Never mind figured it out, Greg Liszt, and yes a member of Springsteen's Seeger Session touring band, fantastic player.
One and the same - Greg Liszt!
@@anthonysalvati5868 Liszt was alsto the banjo player in Crooked Still w/ O'Donovan. Definitely check them out if you've never heard of them.
If my memory serves he created that funky 4 finger banjo style, some banjo nerd-dom but it stands out. Great player.
Shit this is great.
That cymbal just couldn’t hang.
Ho-lee sheeeit.
