Aoife O'Donovan: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.

Ideally, musicians recording Tiny Desk (home) concerts adhere to the series’ core concept and perform behind some sort of desk, tiny or otherwise. But, barring that, it helps to make bookshelves your backdrop. When Aoife O’Donovan assembled her band at Portsmouth Book & Bar in Portsmouth, N.H., she made sure to note her surroundings: “It’s great to be here, surrounded by all these books.”
The Bostonian singer-songwriter, who these days splits her time between a solo career and her work with the Grammy-winning supergroup I’m With Her, has a sound nicely suited for bookish locales: O’Donovan’s warm folk-pop music conjures memories of the Northeast folk boom of the ’90s, the soaring plaintiveness of Indigo Girls and the winsome lilt of modern bluegrass, elevated by a voice that’s searching and friendly.
Backed by guitarist and singer Isa Burke (from the band Lula Wiles), bassist Ethan Jodziewicz (who’s toured with The Milk Carton Kids and others) and drummer Robin MacMillan, O’Donovan performed four songs from her gorgeous new album Age of Apathy. For the title track, they were joined by Virginia’s Yasmin Williams - herself a Tiny Desk veteran, not to mention one of the most inventive and surprising guitarists around.

this was so fun to record. Thanks again to Book and Bar for opening their doors early, the band Isa, Ethan, Robin + Yasmin for joining us on Age of Apathy, and to Joe, Danny, and Darren for capturing the performance 💚
Beautiful music.
Omg it's her it's her
Your band was jammin that 2nd joint was rockin
These lyrics and melodies are the loveliest thing about morning algorithms that suggested this !
I think that you're one of the best live musicians that I've come across. I'm really excited to see you in Belfast next month!
Aoife, my wife was killed in an accident 22 years ago tonight, when she was 35 years old, and our son was 6. She was a singer/guitarist and we would spend our evenings playing and singing to each other. You have the voice of an angel and sometimes while listening to you I get to that place where I can hear her in your lyrics, your vibe, everything. Thanks for being that conduit (even if you don't know that you are).
So sorry for your loss!

This is an unexpected gem; I loved discovering Aoife and her band. There are beautiful elements of early Joni Mitchell here (which is great) but Aoife is her own woman. Her accompanying musicians are excellent as well.
Completely agree about the hints of Joni Mitchell!
B61 is just perfect.
Wow, she’s up there with best of them. Very unique.
zzzzzzzz.........
Been a fan since she collaborated with the Goat Rodeo Sessions! Incredible voice and music :)
Loooooovely...literally in the first five seconds, the vocals and bass caught me. Very interesting changes, grooves, melodies, harmonies and songwriting. Aoife ( and band ) now on my mind...

Loved her voice through Crooked Still and I'm With Her, continuing to love the solo work! Great to see her on Tiny Desk!
oh, i didnt know she was in that group. cool. I listened to them, but sometimes never learn individual band member names.
@@wordgifts I had the same experience, loved her in I'm with Her, and then discovered I had been listening to her for years in Crooked Still!
Amen to that -- Loved her in all her endeavors
I'll tell anyone who will listen that Aoife has THE most beautiful voice in music today. Such a perfect combination of warmth, clarity, and range--and on top of that, massive songwriting talents.
Dear Mr J on Bass, very great work 🙏🏼
Yaaasss, Aoife!!! My elementary bff. So proud of you
Every bass player should light a candle for Jaco. This was a beautiful performance, recorded and mixed amazingly. Thank you.
So beautiful! I can’t believe that it is live music!
Wow. Great set. And it's all too rare to hear a drummer who plays so musically, always listening, never overplaying, providing just the right coloration at exactly the right time. A singer-songwriter as talented as Aoife deserves an accompanist this good.
Anyone can bash a kit, but getting such groove with such a light touch... That's the mark of a great drummer.
Bass is another melodic element too. I love it
One of my favorite artists and a hugely underrated singer-songwriter. Can't wait to see her return to play the UK after two postponements. [EDIT: please bring this cool band, Aoife!]
Stunning. Amazing musicians.
I am a new fan! Thank you Tiny Desk for introducing me to amazing musicians💖
Hello Elise, how are you doing?
A round of applause for the super tasteful bass lines. Well played, sir. Well played indeed.
It's what you might call a 'confidential' style. Sublime.
Nice playing. A little heavy in the mix for me.
reminds me of jaco a little, no?
I think he is quite unique… love where he sits in the mix, given the thin guitar tones, which are also tasty. And the drums are pure punctuation for the lyric.. what a band
Oh yeah… and that voice
I've been missing the "Joni Mitchell" of my youth and it's nice to hear someone with her style. It takes me back 💛
Also check out Madison Cunningham as well. She has a voice fairly similar to Joni but with amazing electric guitar work.
Good Afternoon🔥from Korea🇰🇷
Sweet find! 💕 Awesome sound and story telling. Loving the Joni Mitchell vibe... reawakening the heart. Geesh. Thanks, y'all! Love, A New Fan
I just saw this lineup perform today at San Francisco's "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass" Festival. They were all terrific! 👍
I discovered her in the Goat Rodeo album, what a lovely performance! :D
Flavors of joni mitchell very sweet
Her voice keeps getting better and better. Soft yet strong. Never cloying.
This is like part two of Joni's hejira, love it
This band was gooooodddd!!!!
Really nice stuff. Original, creative, and personal. Like the arrangements, the harmonies, the soft and comfortable vocals. Especially like how your bass player does so much with the bottom end. Not often I can listen to a completely new artist...and enjoy every part of it. Someone mentioned a Joni Mitchell vibe (who wouldn't want to be compared to Joni!). Totally get that. Great job.
I agree, also about Joni.
Good morning from Washington D.C.. Beautiful melodies to wake up to.💯🎶💞
voice of an angel!!!! love to see the aoife tiny desk trajectory, the solo show is well deserved but how did we miss crooked still in the process....
Great sounding band. I can tell I'll be listening to this concert a lot this week!
This reminds me of Live From Here. I miss that program.
Me too, me too!
My favorite music show. Hope they'll bring it back
One of the top storytellers of our time. 👏 🙌
Amazing. I am forwarding you all to others. Great voice and wonderful bass lines.
Thanks Aoife and team for doing this! needed this book.
Loved her with Goat Rodeo
She's incredible!! Discovered her music this year and I haven't stopped listening to her latest record. Her voice is angelic 💗💗
Had the pleasure of watching her open for Gregory Alan Isakov in Asheville last month. She has such a beautiful voice and she does it with ease!
OMG, collaborating with Jasmine! This is pure gold!💛
Nice surprise to see Ms. Williams playing along. Caught her awhile back on tiny desk. As always Ms. O'Donovan delivers with her beautiful voice.
This is beautiful music 🎶 🎵 ❤ 😍 💜 ♥.
I just love Aoife O´Donovans and this bands music. This in new to me.
Amazing!! Added to favourites immediately
So brilliant - I recently discovered Aiofe and fell in love with her voice and music. She does have a Joni vibe - but she is her own unique singer songwriter. The band and the singer meld perfectly. Just so lovely.
Very nice! Thanks for posting.
Just finding your music. I am absolutely hooked! You have an amazing voice and message!
Very fine session, thank you so much for sharing it!
beautiful voices and music !
Oh my gosh…I love her so much (appreciate her Soul coming through her music…her voice, her singing, her songwriting, compositions). She always plays with top musicians too. Tiny Desk, does it again. Always impeccable taste in music. 🎶💓🎶 I cannot wait to get back to playing myself. Thank you for the inspiration.
This is soo good, keep coming back, wow
a delight. Thank you!
Lovely descriptor from NPR music. It's great when people really care about the music. Especially in this tough time for artists.
love your music Aoife
That was beautiful! You remind me of Joni Mitchell when she played with Jaco…Thanks so much for sharing your gifts with us🎸🎤🎼
there's a great video of her playing joni mitchell covers on live from here
This is stunning! Aoife O'Donovan please come to Australia sometime.
I discovered Aoife by coming across her performing a couple Joni songs, beautifully. I immediately bought Bullfrogs Croon and now, Age of Apathy. Love her lyrics, melodies, voice, and band.
I love how Aoife works Joni's "My Old Man" into "Age of Apathy." Such a great performance.
Complexity, tunings and originality hint strongly of Joni's influence, but Aofies put her own mark on the songs she writes and arranges. They are different, better....and I really enjoyed Joni's works. The surrounding talent she's bringing on is the best I've listened to, to date - they just fit these current songs so well. Because of this clip I just bought her newest 2 CD set. Just really well done...
Seriously beautiful work.
This was great!! Some amazing key changes. Very Reminiscent of Shawn Colvin’s voice.
Beautiful
Beautiful stuff!
Aoife is awesome. We went to the same high school (me: MUCH earlier; I'm old). But my music classes were incredible.
Oh, Meu Deus! Que perfeição.
Cheers from NH
I love that Book Store. Hi all!
Incredible. We're so excited to have you at Hillside this summer!
Oh man!! GO ISA!
Beautiful :)
I hear some Eva Cassidy in her. My first exposure to this young lady. I’ll be following!
Awesomeness 🎉🎉
Wow! 🙂
YES!!! Yasmin is so amazingly talented it shouldn't even be legal.
Her version of Love Song to a Stranger is awesome.
The bass forward mix here is amazing! Just wow. I love it.
beauty and purity, in equal measure.
As a former librarian it is nice to see they a playing in a library! Greetings from Sweden.
Has Joni Mitchell heard this? She'd be honoured that a lot modern female Singer-Songwriters still draw from her greatly.
The Lorax & Hot Foot Teddy always!
💗💗
Age Of Apathy, beauty rising up from a fevered dream, I will buy it tomorrow when the music store opens, hopefully he has it in stock, if not he will order it, I'm sure.
Lovely music and a fantastic bassplayer!
yes,...but bass is much too loud!!!
Never heard of her before. Just clicked on this because she has an Irish name.
❤💥🙏
Great to see the Geography Teacher joining in on drums at lunch break!
Amazing tunes. I have time on my hands and would help you roll a boulder any time. Any room for a 12 string in your backup band?
🇧🇷
In an interstellar burst, I’m back to save the universe!
Aoife have you ever been to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, or Prince Edward Island? Or maybe Newfoundland, Labrador? I'm cetain you would be well received by very enthusiastic people.
Mixer must be a bass player! Sounds great!!
Reminiscent of Joni Mitchell groovy music
Only too good, therefore too short...
Wow. So struck by the movement in the bass parts. Not like the record. I need to hear this music live...
Alright tiny desk. I need Jamie Foxx asap
What? Why lol
Nice music. She has very clearly been influenced by Joni Mitchell.
EE FAH
The slightly veiled admonishment about not "adhering to the core concept" was entirely unnecessary. I mean, C'mon. NPR. Really?
well, at least they're not promoting their tats. that's all I can say about this
Nice, but bass is much too loud ....
