Dev has always been an awesome guy, but I can see an anger and lack of peace in him in this video. It's cool having seen him evolve into a more complete version of himself.
He's since stopped taking/smoking all the drugs he was on during this period of his life. He soon discovered, to his chagrin, that what he was ingesting and smoking to improve his mood, were doing the opposite. He's mentioned it often. "Alien" indeed.
There is no way to deny that this isn't one of the best metal albums ever written. It's literally in my top 5....hell, I don't even know what my top 5 is but I know this album would be on it. It changed my life and "Alien" is a perfect example of the level of potential and enormity that the world of heavy metal possesses.
WeWantYouToStay Completely agree. The New Black is just as good, it's just way more progressive but still heavy as shit!! Far Beyond Metal and The New Black are some of my favorite Strapping tracks of all time!!
I just heard of this band today and I have fallen in love with this album. God it's so powerful. Everything about it it perfect. They should make more music together.
Mathews Barbosa You've obviously never played drums to think playing shirtless and while wearing gloves is more badass than playing with boots. "BOOOOM".
@Devin Johnson He worked with the Devin Townsend Band as well. In fact, the Synchestra lineup was almost exactly the same as DTP, except Dave Young was on keyboards and Beav was on guitar instead of bass.
This album hit me like a sledgehammer the first time I heard it. It's a few years later now and I have yet to see it's equal. I love Devin's solo work too, but for sheer intensity, SYL and Alien in particular, are the very pinnacle.
gene hoglan is an absolute monster, and a crazy nice guy too. got to meet him recently before a show at a meet and greet, after that he came out and hung out with fans outside the venue before they let us in, super cool guy
Tomas, Danny, Mario (Meshuggah, Tool, Gojira) are insane. But I don't think Gene gets enough credit. One sold drummer. Hats off. He says I want to be drum machine.... bro... already there
SYL was and is epic. Makes me a bit sad though that Alien was released so long ago and these awesome musicians will -probably- never get together again... we will always have the music though!
There is no other album period that compares to Alien. It's in a league of it's own. It'll only recieve it's deserved recognition years after Devin is gone. Today's humans are not smart enough to appreciate it's greatness. For the modern human it's too real and actually scary to many many folks. Sad but True the entire worlds population just about are brainwashed to be less aware than most children. This is why children seem smarter than adults in many ways. They are.
I think it's worth noting to all the people that don't understand why DT called that DIGITAL (keyword) TAPE machine obsolete. Almost as soon as studios purchased digital tape consoles, HDD recording replaced it. Digital is digital but there are still plenty of 100% analog studios out there. Convincing a label to pay for the astronomical cost of analog tape would be a toughy. Convincing an audio engineer that a modern metal album would sound better tracked on analog tape would be a near impossibility.
Directed, photographed, edited and produced by Marcus Rogers and CInestir Films, just to clarify. I am not asking for subscribers for other peoples work (like what seems like the majority of youtube channels).
ok from 3:08 the first one is a shure beta 52, then the next one up is actually just a speaker taped to a stand (used for kick drum, similar to the yamaha "sub kick" just ghetto style) next up to the right is a Sennheiser 421 then just above to the left of that is the shure sm57 then above that to the left is a Shure sm7b to the right of that and pretty much the other 3 behind it are all sennheiser 421's. they are probably each going onto a seperate tom. i didnt see the overhead mics though :\
@NoVanity1 not really. If its very close, you can use whatever you want. Overheads you can get picky on, but cymbal hits are high-freqs and tend to be mixed waaay down anyway.
This is hoglans masterpiece in terms of his drumming. As awesome as Devins songwriting and how amazing some of these songs are, this album is a drumming album. Holy shit gene. Holy shit!!
Weed fucked him up, as he admits. It made him paranoid and crazy, he had panic attacks from that and the fact that he was, by this point, forcing out music and a personality that he wanted no part of anymore.
Matt Cooke Yeah I agree with you...Weed isn't for everybody, and I respect him for making the choice to stop when he wanted to...what bothers me are the people who say dumb shit like the OP...How sad is it that Alien is one of the Best metal albums of all time?? No it's not sad, The only thing sad are pretentious assholes who act like Devin was some sort of junkie cause he smoked weed for half his career...Big fuckin deal...Strapping young lad probably wouldn't have been so angry and brutal if it weren't for that weed he was smoking..So what say you about that??? DT is an awesome musician who has proved that he can make great music With or without weed...But even he wouldn't sit here and say YOU shouldn't smoke weed...He is humble and doesn't point his finger at people for doing what they like to do. OP should learn from that ;)
tes420 What I said had nothing to do with whether or not Devin was stoned. I honestly didn't know. I just know that he's a lot happier now than he was then, and you can actually tell from watching him in this video compared to current interviews. I'm getting the feeling that YOU might have been stoned when you wrote this out, though, as you are completely misquoting me and reading things into what I said.
To the guy who said he lost respect for devin. You should try singing live in a metal band when you cant hear anything, its near impossible, a soundguy/venue can destroy the set of an amazing artist like this. Having a click track, may be very important if the band is using prerecorded samples live, which im pretty sure devin does. on topic, this album was amazing.
"i dont even give a shit if you like it or not. Fuck you if you don't." God I love Gene.
What’s not to love ❤️ amazing musician and great human
Dev has always been an awesome guy, but I can see an anger and lack of peace in him in this video. It's cool having seen him evolve into a more complete version of himself.
Yes!
He's since stopped taking/smoking all the drugs he was on during this period of his life. He soon discovered, to his chagrin, that what he was ingesting and smoking to improve his mood, were doing the opposite. He's mentioned it often. "Alien" indeed.
Hes in the process of creating one of the most heaviest insane albums of all time...
While I whole heartly agree with you, Alien is right now my favorite album of all time.
@@terria8825 what album is that?
There is no way to deny that this isn't one of the best metal albums ever written. It's literally in my top 5....hell, I don't even know what my top 5 is but I know this album would be on it. It changed my life and "Alien" is a perfect example of the level of potential and enormity that the world of heavy metal possesses.
***** the new black was way neater in other ways, more experimental and progressive
WeWantYouToStay Completely agree. The New Black is just as good, it's just way more progressive but still heavy as shit!! Far Beyond Metal and The New Black are some of my favorite Strapping tracks of all time!!
+J MetalSkinz think you mean this IS :')
Are you kidding me? Gene plays wearing Doc Martens? Dude's the literal definition of Beast.
There's also videos of him playing wearing not only boots like those, but with ankle weights on top of that. Dude's indeed not messing around.
Weird seeing Dev with his skullet when I'm so used to seeing him baldy now xD
I just heard of this band today and I have fallen in love with this album. God it's so powerful. Everything about it it perfect. They should make more music together.
he's worked out his inner demons. closest he's gotten kind of recently is his album deconstruction
Devin still produces , in my opinion, one of the most crushing guitar tones ever.
"The soundtrack of our impending apocalypse" was the sticker on my CD copy of Alien. It's dark, it's dense, it's intense. But it's art. Amazing album.
Gene is the best Drummer in metal. U put him in any band, and u'd notice the drums are extra class, and u'd remember him for it.
Ever hear of a guy named Mario Duplainter? He plays for Gojira. Check him out if you don't know him. He's a beast behind the kit
Joshua Atherton
But he's not as fat as Gene and doesn't play with freakin' boots! (What makes Gene more awesome).
Mathews Barbosa You've obviously never played drums to think playing shirtless and while wearing gloves is more badass than playing with boots. "BOOOOM".
Mathews Barbosa Mario of Luigi?
BOOMM
+Patrick van Gelder Gene lost loads of weight, and is slaying harder than ever. (BOOOM) :)
That drummer is the best hype man. He tells me they're amazing and his conviction is so powerful that i just believe it, even before hearing a note.
its awesome to see dave say "im just here for the album" and know he was in dtp. really heartwarming in a strange way
Dave Young: I'm not in the band.
A few years later...
Damn, Dave is so ..... young in this video.
Cult of Violence Band Young Dave Young
Is that Mike Young's brother? Mike, from Third Ion?
Yes.
@Devin Johnson He worked with the Devin Townsend Band as well. In fact, the Synchestra lineup was almost exactly the same as DTP, except Dave Young was on keyboards and Beav was on guitar instead of bass.
he sounded completely blown out too
This has to be one of the best albums I've ever heard
This album is an absolute masterpiece - Amazing
DUDE, LEGIT! i had a backstage pass for one of his shows and he was cooking burgers on a small travel grill for everyone. he's friggen awesome!
This album hit me like a sledgehammer the first time I heard it. It's a few years later now and I have yet to see it's equal. I love Devin's solo work too, but for sheer intensity, SYL and Alien in particular, are the very pinnacle.
"Sean and everybody else has backed up the session so there's no risk of losing any of it" Famous last words 🤣
The best SYL album of all of them. The first I heard and it blew my mind. I was like, "WTF?"
City and Alien are some of the best produced and mixed albums ever.
There's great metal, there's real awesome metal, and then there's STRAPPING YOUNG LAD ... yeah! 😀
Dave young is 500 stoned.
nice profile pic
Gene's so normal! I expected him to just grunt and swear
Gene is awesome!!! had an in depth coversation the man!! he was on the level!!
gene hoglan is an absolute monster, and a crazy nice guy too. got to meet him recently before a show at a meet and greet, after that he came out and hung out with fans outside the venue before they let us in, super cool guy
Haha! "Here's the tape room... The obsolete tape room, because no one in their right mind uses that shit anymore." Love that shit, no bullshit!
6:18 is great advise for life. "crush. all the time." What an amazing drummer, and what an amazing band. Thank you for posting.
I saw this drummer after a show, he wore combat boots and ankle weights. He has very fast and accurate feet, I don't know how he does it.
"Alien" is a masterpiece
Tomas, Danny, Mario (Meshuggah, Tool, Gojira) are insane. But I don't think Gene gets enough credit. One sold drummer. Hats off. He says I want to be drum machine.... bro... already there
Traffic accident, great analogy devin, wouldn't expect anything less lol
Party tent above the drums haha, awesome looks ;) Feels cosy!
Man, Dev has some of the nicest guitars!
This album shattered my soul into a thousand little pieces.
This album is incredible.
SYL was and is epic. Makes me a bit sad though that Alien was released so long ago and these awesome musicians will -probably- never get together again... we will always have the music though!
Haha Devin getting stoned at the end.
+lasoogneypubes as bad as weed seemed to be for Dev, the stoner in me loves that ending haha
There is no other album period that compares to Alien. It's in a league of it's own. It'll only recieve it's deserved recognition years after Devin is gone. I consider this and Deconstruction to be two of the best metal albums of all time.
I think it's worth noting to all the people that don't understand why DT called that DIGITAL (keyword) TAPE machine obsolete. Almost as soon as studios purchased digital tape consoles, HDD recording replaced it. Digital is digital but there are still plenty of 100% analog studios out there. Gene making those jaws drop as usual...
nice bong from dave....gene is the man
I was going to meet Devin once, he's apparently an awesome dude, but he was busy healing the sick and blind with his music.
Incredible album.
Top ten best metal albums ever!!!!
i love the dry sound of love in the beginning of the video 0:01 It would be cool with a dry version of the album.
Devin loading up the bong at the end haha
They're so humble.
Cheers for the upload, beyond fuckin awesome.
Smoking along :)
God damn! Dave Young's really... young! in this video
I love how all great artists record their albums baked as fuck!!
Watching Gene's boots go....fucking wow.
I love devin and gene
Best vocalist best drummer in metal
“Aftermath” is theeeeee metal anthem
Wish they made a Making of heavy as a really heavy thing, or City!
I miss this band.
I got to meet bacon once, it was the nicest food ive ever eaten, it then offered me some Devin Townsends
Devin in the studio where Van Halen once recorded and playing Eddies Music Man. Nice.
Devin is so ahead of his time, ahead of all of us. Makes me sad how brilliant he is. Ha!
Fucking genius!
Every time I listen to this ablum, I end up physically and emotionally exhausted
Damn... Gene Hoglan keep taking my breath again and again... He's HELL of a drummer!
And thus the angriest album ever made was born.
City is angrier imo
DEV!!! analog tape is still the bomb!
Haha, this video is literally the only time I've seen Gene Hoglan swear on camera.
i love it, stoner metal head canadians PERFECT BAND
Skeksis is the best song in the world. hands down.
Devy looks blazed as hell xD
If they release single instrument tracks from Alien to the public, I will jizz. On everything. That is made of matter.
1:45 the most important piece of studio equiptment right there
This album is way too underrated. I can't believe most SYL fans think City is better >:O
City is better.
Skesis is so fucking good. But holy shit, look at baby Dave!
I got to meet devin one, hes one of the nicest guys ive meet, he cooked me some eggs n bacon
love gene, best dude
"That is fuckin' WICKED!"
Jed always was a cool bastard
Directed, photographed, edited and produced by Marcus Rogers and CInestir Films, just to clarify. I am not asking for subscribers for other peoples work (like what seems like the majority of youtube channels).
07:26 ... JUST LOVE IT !
Gene isn't as cocky as you guys think, they're all pretty down to earth.
My favorite song is info dump.....
DAVE's A LEFTY?!?!?!
ok from 3:08 the first one is a shure beta 52, then the next one up is actually just a speaker taped to a stand (used for kick drum, similar to the yamaha "sub kick" just ghetto style) next up to the right is a Sennheiser 421 then just above to the left of that is the shure sm57 then above that to the left is a Shure sm7b to the right of that and pretty much the other 3 behind it are all sennheiser 421's. they are probably each going onto a seperate tom. i didnt see the overhead mics though :\
Lol Devs voice is so high pitch here xD
@NoVanity1 not really. If its very close, you can use whatever you want. Overheads you can get picky on, but cymbal hits are high-freqs and tend to be mixed waaay down anyway.
Skullet Dev reminds me of an evil wizard.
I remember one was Larry and Mike and Phill and I think Jackson... oh and James.
12 years late, but erh.. Was the channel saved?!
I guess amazing the entire metal community wasn't enough, He had to amaze his band mate to.
we ride - so full of win.
wtf look at that mix table, must be way over 200 buttons to work with lol
Where is this from? I neeeeeed it.
Gene's Gazebo. My new band's name.
Yes.
is that a FUCKING apple on the kick pedal? lolol guess il have to try that....how about a coconut?
i got to meet devin once, hes one of the nicest guys ive meet, he let me arm wrestle him
playing a 6 string and then moveing to a 7 string like devin is just like wtf its a diffrent instrament in its self but its soo much fun
This is hoglans masterpiece in terms of his drumming. As awesome as Devins songwriting and how amazing some of these songs are, this album is a drumming album. Holy shit gene. Holy shit!!
It's sad to see Devin like that.
Fellish Beast what StOnEd??? Get over yourself Douche
Weed fucked him up, as he admits. It made him paranoid and crazy, he had panic attacks from that and the fact that he was, by this point, forcing out music and a personality that he wanted no part of anymore.

tes420 No - unhappy.

on topic, this album was amazing.
Gene isnt cocky he's right...
It's Gene Hoglan man! He deserves respect for his confidence. It's not like he's Lars Ulrich...
@Wabaanimkii I thought I was the only one who thought that track was amazing....you have to be in the right mood to listen to it though
