After listening to Devin's podcasts about the Terria-Physicist era, it makes seeing this footage all the more interesting. He was dealing with significant depression and was self-medicating, not sleeping much. The hairstyle and the dark bags under his eyes reflects what he said about that time in his life. I'm glad he eventually got healthy but man, back-in-the-day Dev was an absolute force of nature. He truly exuded pure distilled rage and it resonated so much with me. Thank you for uploading this piece of metal history!
Yeah having gone straight from the podcasts to this; this LIVE show now just feels sickening to watch for me. Like as you mentioned, if you play close attention you can see the shit he was going through reflected on his face, and I'll add in his stage presence too. It looks horrid to watch and I can only imagine how much worse it would've been to actually perform while actually going through that shit. If I was Devy I wouldn't want to be in a light-year of SYL, if these were the memories I had of it.
The world wasn't ready for Strapping Young Lad when they came out. Gene is like a machine on the drums. And it's amazing how Devin has advanced with his voice of the years. Singing high notes in this video sound painful. But now, he does it with so much ease. Thanks for uploading!
Are you kidding me? Going to this show was a formative moment in my life! I cannot believe it was recorded. Wonder if I can find myself in the crowd...
When "City" was released, I remember i read an album review in a Norwegian music magazine (remember those?) and the reviewer absolutely savaged the album, said it was uninteresting, far too fast, too chaotic and reminded him most of all of being stuck inside a centrifuge for 40 minutes. 1 star. So I had to listen to the album, went to the record store and listened in the listening booth (remember that?!) and I was in absolute awe. Bought it, and never got bored of it. Listens to it regularily, along with "Heavy as". Sadly that chaos and anger disappeared with subsequent albums, but boy did heavy devy shine bright with those two albums. But I'm happy for him still, take care of your brain first, then make art. Millions of fans still loves his mellower endevours.
It's not sad that the anger disappeared. It's sad when people hang onto anger and bitterness as they get older. Life is much better for everyone if you can find some peace.
@@rlm4471 Well, the ingenious thing about angry music is that you get the energy and exhilaration of rage without being actually angry, and no one bears any consequence from what is otherwise a destructive emotional outburst. But, of course, I'm happy that Heavy Devy found peace in his life, I just miss his fantastic creations from when he needed to vent through the music. Sadly, I find his music less interesting now.
This video is personal to me, this is the diamond in the rough for me, I deeply appreciate you sharing this. I'm very sentimental with SYL. Thankyou bro 🙏 ❤️ 🍻
There was a massive static electricity charge that night, which only seemed to affect Devin. In all seriousness, thank you kindly for sharing this footage, part of the great YooToobe time capsule.
Wish there was more footage from this era, just the early 2000s in general. Quite a smart idea playing both SYL stuff and his solo work at the same time. Stucker never disappoints, thank you!
Thanks for posting this. Great to see some live stuff from this era. A year later I discovered Devin, supporting Fear Factory in the EU tour. They played most of this set. I would pay good money for a Physicist remaster, but after reading Devin's bio, I doubt that's going to happen.
Man.. the earlier the Strapping performance I happen to find on YT, the more seriously curious I get to learn just exactly how the actual god damn hell Gene Hoglan, metal drummer from Texas, originally in Dark Angel, by some wild but fortunate circumstance, wound up in SYL, a Canadian post apocalyptic industrial experimental symphonic death metal project with the bassist from Fear Factory, some beet farmer looking dude named Jed, Willie the LSD addict tech geek, and Devin part time psychotic evil music genius ringleader....
Love it…Thank you for posting….I’ve watched Devin grow up (I’m much older than him) and it’s so great to see that he still plays some older stuff in his set now….Love is the closer on his current tour here in Europe but looks like Aftermath (greatest verse riff of all time?…discuss) is no more :-( Can’t believe that the new album is the same artist….ever changing. Long May he keep us on our toes.
I couldn't see him this time in Europe as my visa could be cancelled by Finland for no reason (because I'm Russian)... If I'd go, I'd film and upload here, but oh well
Hmmm!, Interesting perspective sir, thank you for sharing for sure. As for me, My cousin and I were very fortunate (also shocked, fascinated and genuinely terrified) to experience Strapping at Ozzfest 2006, we had no knowledge of them before they took stage, and good god... Did they musically traumatize us haha, in the best possible way. What's even better is, having arrived just as the first openers finished sound check, we had secured front and center positions on the rail, very happily and closely bared witness to late stage SYL Devins mental god damn insanity haha. Cousin and I couldn't have been more than 16-17 at the time.
Crazy hearing Far Beyond Metal at this stage of SYL, never woulda guessed it was written this far back in their career. Also cool seeing Devin's solo stuff being played by SYL

I'm way too young to have been able to witness SYL so you sharing all this live footage is such a blessing, probably my favourite band I'll never get to see (despite Dev still rockin some songs along with his awesome solo stuff). Dude, in two words: THANK YOU!!!
SYL was always intense, but this show is nuts start to finish awesome upload 👏 much love for SYL they connected with so many they were true metal treasures. I doubt we will ever get a full revival, but whenever devin drags those tracks up, whoever gets to see it live is super lucky.
I was at this. My father videotaped their all ages show in North Van c. 2000, it’s on VHS. When I get it transferred I’ll give it to whoever wants it on their channel. (I don’t know how to upload stuff)
was lucky enough to see Strappin' when City came out @ the good old Mighty Niagara in Van...heavy as a heavy could fuxkin heavy be, then heavier than the heavier metal...gotta love Strappin hevy Devy!
A black Diamond. this guy is really comfortable on stage... I just did a concert of this fabulous group SYL in an old town in France in the 2000s, it was just one of my greatest musical experiences. the guy comes out of his bus quietly and comes to shake hands with 2 poor 30 year old idiots, this guy is kool and this stroke of genius for this album.
Even though Devin was essentially miserable at this time period, it's still his most hilarious hairstyle he ever rocked while he still had hair. No offense to the always godly skullet with or without dreads, as loved as it is and should be.
Didn't realize there was a time where he was playing SYL and solo stuff simultaneously. Saw SYL and Dev mid 2000s and they were always separate. Insane set.
Melodic insanity. Got scared with an SYL tattoo and been a devoted Devin fan since Heavy as a really heavy thing. Even got to see him with The Wildhearts at Reading 1994. Wildhearts are another criminally underrated band.
WHOA, When they start playing detox, that other guy who has a microphone on stage all the sudden, is that Heathen from zimmers hole? but completely out of costume?? Certainly looks like him, from what I can tell from the grainy analog video haha. That would be awesome if someone could confirm.
Yes....The guitarist, bass player and drummer are all from Zimmers hole .... They signed to Devins label HevyDevy and Devin produced their early albums...

The anger clearly hadn't disappeared by Alien, which is undoubtedly the best SYL release.
Wow. This is like peak Strapping right here. Absolutely sublime.

Got to see them twice over here in the UK, once at Donnington and once in the now gone LA2. Legendary.
Damn what a setlist, all favourites of mine. They even play Punky Brüster.
Amazing show, Devin looks maniac with that hair haha. Outstanding setlist and is nice to see the band playing devin's solo work
This is a gem. I don't wanna know how Loud it was in there.
Loud.
Probably Loud with a capital L, yes.
