I'm glad we got to experience the SYL era Devy and he was able to make it out of it doing well and seems to be pretty happy. I would never ask him to go back to the places that created those records, only thank him for doing so when he was in that headspace. Gem of a human being, absolutely.
So true. For me this gives me my old sanity back. My balls so to speak. I used to connect with this sort of music too intensely but boy this record is good. It´s honest music. It´s the antidote for most of my life in depression and anxiety. One thing is Devins composisions. But vocally to sacrifise his health to become first a selftaught extreme metal vocalist then quit the skullet, drugs and booze, become parent etc. and then be even better singer and screamer in his 50´s where he is able to maintain his voice with his number of records behind him plus his work ethics to make this sort of career possible. For me he is just as badass as your Mike Tyson or Michael Jorden. The Messi or Roger Federer of his craft. So many highlight reels musically. Imo. He is a badboy with integrity. Bc he made a career and sound which is so none mainstream possible to actualise. Only fearless or people who can confront lazyness and fear is able to succeed in any craft. Socially too. Lol. You´ve written lets say 5 of the best albums but got no bravery or social skills or financial knowledge to actualise.. I guess it will cathc up with most, hopefully push them through in the end.
I remember watching this when I got the CD/DVD edition in high school. Looking back on it now in the context of his Alien podcast, is *super* illuminating. I'm glad he's doing well now.
If you want perspective as a musician…periodically come here and watch this and you will be humbled. This album and everything that went into it, just blows the mind.
Possession is easily my favorite track on the Alien album. It’s so freaking cool to see how they composed these tracks. I like how Devin is right there gettin down while the young girls are singing their parts. SYL! One of my all time favorite bands ever.
SYL was way ahead of their time. If Dev had stuck with this route they would be monsters. He has put out so much other good music though, so not complaining he went that route
SYL was so insane it isnt even funny. They are upper eschelon of the heaviest bands ever. Maybe only flanked by Meshuggah and Anaal Nakrath. Both who no doubt owe a lot to Dev!! He treats it like nothing but man, imagine SYL riding the 2010 metal wave . . .
It didn't make the record, but they used it in the song 1312 by Zimmers Hole (the other band where Jed, Byron and Gene were part of) Check it out, it's awesome.
There's a reason he's one of the most highly respected drummers in the genre & in general/why he's called "the atomic clock" or "the human drum machine" 🥴
It's so weird to look back and see Dev holding a bong lol
Not really seeing the music he made tbh
Yea,I can't stand anything he's done after SYL!!
@@SJD904 Ziltoid the Omniscient is truly up there with the best music he's ever made!

I just love Gene so much. Such an intelligent, well-spoken, thoughtful and insightful person. Amazing musician too.
Gene is a legend.
Listening to Devin's podcast talking about this experience makes watching this that much more interesting.
Which episode?
@@HXCBeard search for "Devin Townsend Podcast Alien" and it should come up. He does an episode for each of his past albums, one at a time.
11:14 i think this encapsulates that lol
@@HXCBeard The one that says "Alien". Lol.
Devin's absolute masterpiece.
Both Alien and Infinity are his best creations for me.

When you see Gene Hoglan... There is nothing to doubt about...
Possession is easily my favorite track on the Alien album. It’s so freaking cool to see how they composed these tracks. I like how Devin is right there gettin down while the young girls are singing their parts. SYL! One of my all time favorite bands ever.
Agreed. Such a good song, wish he played it live
Goddamn I need it!
Excellent Whitechapel song too. Here comes the hate...
And what a beautiful album they made
There are few albums I would call absolute masterpieces. Alien is one of them
You can really see how uncomfortable and insecure Dev feels here, but he's pushing it nevertheless
Miss the oldskool indeed 🤘🏾
man Gene is awesome "my job is to crush, all the time"
"...and I, of course, am Kermit" ahhh the pre-Ziltoid era
after watching his podcast and his Moth updates, pretty wild to see where he once was. We Love you Dev
9:42 Gene is such a machine. What an incredible drummer.
Devin pretty much did the best and shortest review ever of this album ever when he likened it to a car crash in extremely high fidelity
Legendary album, legendary musicians, but all this time I didn’t know I needed a pop up tent to really get that Gene drum sound
"Love" was such an abuscure work it that it started as "Love7"
One of those masterpieces one of the best
This is why they call him Heavy Devy 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Gene, don't worry...we all fucking love this album.
Heavy metal Benjamin Franklin
Fuck I can't un-see this now 😭😆
still listen to it way too much.
🤘🤘

This is my metal-loathing friend's favorite metal album.
WHAT RIFF is happening at 7:02??? ive been trying to figure this out for 15 years!
It didn't make the record, but they used it in the song 1312 by Zimmers Hole (the other band where Jed, Byron and Gene were part of) Check it out, it's awesome.
History. Time flies and things can change into the opposite of what they once were, including people. Lots to learn from life at the times you are it.
Definitely the same studio he used for Transcendence.
Gene looks the exact same today. Wild
He looks better because he's lost a ton of weight.
Is Gene being both humble and cocky at the same time? How does this happen??
I don’t listen to this stuff at all - I don’t even know who I got here but this was a cool af behind the scenes. Aw someone. Gene is a sick drummer.
Gene is the backbone of this shit
Gene, modesty himself. 😂
City is the ultimate fuck you album.
Forgot the DTP guitarist did keys here
Friend: how high are you?
Me: 15:51
In the intro; I WISH the drums sounded that good on the album :/
Lmao i agree. The master of the album is a bit mediocre tbh
@@Osochagree....Centurymedia should remaster
Has no one else commented on the old windows screen saver yet...classic.
Mac?
No kick plates? 😮
What's Dave up to these days?
why does devin look older before than he does now lol
substance abuse and poor mental health
The skullet.
what the hell is my cousin doing in this video.
If Devin Townsend met Alien it would be Alien vs. Predator
Is it because of his long hair or because he looks like there's a red dot over his house on the sex offender database map?
I'm guessing its because of his dreads lol
Holy fuck, there is a god after seeing this!!
Unfortunately i am almost deaf on my left ear after listening. The song was good but i killed my eardrum trying to make it better.
Vagine Hoglan 🤣
Gawsh
Yes.... We get it....., your a good drummer and your doing the best you can
Fuck you

I would put City in this category as well \m/
