This guy has obviously experienced every human experience. He sings with such depth and knowledge. If his voice doesn't touch you then you're not alive. What a character, a visionary, god rest.
@@kellyoneill thanks to you kelly btw darling if you could checkout my super fun reggae take on this classic and raglan road and maybe plug them I'd be ever so grateful x
Don’t worry about it you can make up for it when you get home from work if you are lucky enough to have some and sing your heart out and be transported by the music Make up for all that lost time
I was born in Salford my husband and I used to do a duet singing this song do I have tears in my eyes while listening to the great Luke Kelly singing it
Rest in peace luke kelly, ronnie drew, barney mckenna and kieran. May you play in the heavens as well as you did on earth. So sad to see all of the original dubliners passed away. And thank you kellyoneill for the most fantasticly amazing collection of luke and the dubliners i have ever seen god bless you for keeping the dubliners spirit alive. I cant thank you enough really from the bottom of my heart. I have been listening to only your channel when wanting to hear the best irish band the wor
Hi from a great German Dubliners Fan who loved this Band since more then 30 Years now. The Video brings back alot of beautyfull Memories and one of the sadest. I saw them in Concert a few Days before Luke died. RiP Luke
Luke would have been 80 today. I was never a musician but had been a Liverpool fan for a while, and after hearing and liking the Virgil van Dijk song I wanted to hear the original. Found this version, liked it so much that I got hooked on the Dubliners and started playing music myself. Too bad I'm about 40 years late because I would have loved to have seen the original Dubliners (Luke, Ronnie, Ciaran/Jim, Barney, and John) in concert...I listen to them every day. RIP Legend.
What a singer he was!!!! I'm only 19 and I'm not an Irish but love him!!! I've started to listen to luke kelly only a mont ago but now can't stop...I'm sure I would have go to all his concerts with the dubs if I were born before!!!!!
We grew up on the Dubliners music (thanks Dad) saw them every time they were here in the north west. Missed our last train home after seeing them in St Helens one night and ended up getting a lift back to Liverpool with them.
Love the way Luke always sang through gritted teeth. A great man. RIP. Still to this day singers intentionally or mistakenly try and attribute this Salford song to other towns. Me, family and some mates saw a band last week from Ireland who introduced it as being a Derry song. They got proper stroppy when we all shouted bollocks, that we were from Salford and that the Mrs even went to the same school there as its writer McColl had many years earlier.
There were plenty of dirty old towns to choose from on these islands, and plenty of dreamers too. Great tune. Is there an original recording you know of?
An awesome song, Kelly really did have one of the best voices I've ever heard, it's so recongnisable and distinctive aswell. The Dubliners are the best band to drown your sorrows to that's for sure, the passion and emotion is just brought out of you after a few pints, especially when Luke Kelly takes the spotlight.
My Dad's lot are from Ireland, He was brought up in Salford. Why can no one identify with a this song just because they are not from Salford. If it registers then it is relevant regardless of where you are from. Any way Luke Kelly could've sang the phone book and people would've loved it.
Very well put. So many of us have a dirty old town where, upon the rubble, we built a life worth living, or tried. And Luke - he had a sharkskin voice, could cut like a serrated knife up one side but was smooth as silk down the other. Cheers from MA, US.
Matthew Brooks, I agree with you. I too reside in MA, US...small world it is. I cannot think of an American singer who could match Luke. Your opinion? Suggestions welcomed!
+dj peters I don't know that there's an American folk/trad singer that could match Luke. Dylan's singing was certainly influenced by the great Irish singers during the folk revival, but he's Dylan - a little too polarizing to stand him up beside Luke. Kris Kristofferson and Townes Van Zandt are both great, but they don't have the aforementioned sharkskin quality that Luke had. For me, the American vocalists who were best at the rough and the smooth were the early soul/R&B artists, like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, but it's hard to compare them against someone in a completely different genre.
I wish with all my heart that the great ,Brilliant Luke Kelly had lived to see my Dirty Old Town grow to take over the whole of Manchester ,,,Love you all Dubliners and its people xxx
I come back to this song once in a while. I come back tonight for my sister, Star. She has OD'ed again. On life support. She is a warm soul, in her own way. But my sis, she may not live through this one. She would love this song - if she could remember it. We shared so much before. I give my whole heart and prayers to her and I pray that she makes it this time. Our love to Ireland- and our family- and our friends and the world during this time of confusion and troubles. . . Star still shines. Believe it or not.
Folk tends to sound better live, or in a stripped down recording. Studio recordings have a danger of losing the soul, especially for some reason British recordings prior to the 60's. They had a tendency to sound very dry and academic. But there's the equal danger of overproducing it
Lyrics : I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal I kissed my girl by the factory wall Dirty old town Dirty old town Clouds are drifting across the moon Cats are prowling on their beat Spring's a girl from the streets at night Dirty old town Dirty old town I heard a siren from the docks Saw a train set the night on fire I smelled the spring on the smoky wind Dirty old town Dirty old town I'm going to make me a good sharp axe Shining steel tempered in the fire I'll chop you down like an old dead tree Dirty old town Dirty old town I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal I kissed my girl by the factory wall Dirty old town Dirty old town Dirty old town Dirty old town

Probably the best version of this song. Luke has more soul in this then any other version I've ever heard. That tenor banjo is on point too. RIP Luke

Grew up in Ireland. Every time I listen to any music of Luke’s it takes me straight back. It’s an overpowering feeling. Truly an insane voice..

He worked with my Dad in Jacobs Biscuits in Bishop Street back in the day, but had to leave when the The Dubliners took off..

Lyrics :
I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
I kissed my girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Clouds are drifting across the moon
Cats are prowling on their beat
Spring's a girl from the streets at night
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
I heard a siren from the docks
Saw a train set the night on fire
I smelled the spring on the smoky wind
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
I'm going to make me a good sharp axe
Shining steel tempered in the fire
I'll chop you down like an old dead tree
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
I kissed my girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
Dirty old town
'I met my love by the gasworks croft' - if you sing the right words.
