This was 5 days before Luke collapset at the stage and they found out that he hade cancer, poor man. R.I.P Luke Kelly the greats folk singer of all time.
Absolutely beautiful rendition by the man himself. I am 24 years of age and I would choose listening to Luke Kelly any day over the music of this decade.
That's real folk. I miss this kind of music, without drums and electric guitar. Why my world here in Finland and Europe is much hard? Make love, not war. All you need is love.
I can barely hold back the tears with this song. The human can be such a beast but on the other hand so forgiving. Music, to me, is a medicine to mend broken hearts.
There is absolutely nothing so stirring as listening to Luke in full voice. I agree with James B - "please God, give us back Luke Kelly" - His Raglan Road gives me goosebumps. Luke & Ronnie Drew will NEVER be forgotten - great performers.
Just read the family tree in full this past weekend, 20 years late, the family on my father's side come from Wexford and Tipperary. can't claim to be Irish as I am not, just a proud Kiwi with an Irish connection.
My parents are from wexford. I was born in London. The only time I'm truly happy is when I'm at a Irish gathering when we have a drink and singsong. Be proud of your Irish heritage.
My Kids are second generation plastics now, but playing Luke Kelly's songs I try and give them a feeling of their Heritage..He was the best...many happy memories.
Luke, your short time on this earth was spent well. One of the greatest vocalists ever. Those of your family left behind will always be proud that you were once here.
This is one of those songs that, because of the solemnity given off by their absolute perfection, I can listen to only in that rare, wonderful state of mind that you have to be in to lie on the grass to gaze at the stars.
This song brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it . My father is from Dublin and I always wish I was born in an earlier period of life to witness Dublin back in her glory days
IF Our irish politicians could put,1/10 of effort in to our country it would be great .But we have these great legends to fall back on and bring some happiness to the people. GOD BLESS them all.
We forget what a phenomenon these guys were. Remember going to the Albert Hall in the 1960.s with my mates smuggling in brown paper bags filled with Danno's (pint bottles of Guinness). Just the lads onstage with their marvellous natural deliveries of great songs playing their instruments and nothing else. 5,000 punters and you could hear a pin drop. Magic! Subsequently, spent a very long evening, night and morning with Barney McKenna and a gang of the lads in Mooney's in the Strand. He played and sang all night. Fabulous!
elle , life goes on. its hard… I'm 2 of 8 children . a twin . both parents from dublin arrived in AUSTRALIA in 1955 got married and all 8 born here. Da has passed away but Ma is strong at 85. you need to stay strong and your family will support you
I am ashamed that I didn't know who Luke Kelly was - I knew the Dubliners - on a recent trip to Ireland - I learned - The best version of this I have ever heard!!
The best selection of the Irish country and western and ballads I have heard I wish that this company would do somting like lyric pad for youn people's to learn words and cords For their wonderfull selection of songs............John Delaney thanking you
This is much a part of me as my own arms and legs. It moves me as much. Thank you Luke, and to the rest of the lads in the band. Since I am all sappy after watching this, thanks to the uploader, and youtube, and the whole lot of techies that made the whole experience possible. Remember 8 tracks? This is a gem.
An all time hero of mine. I got locked into McDaids in Dublin off Grafton street in 1968 with my mate Liam Lamb in his company during "the holy hour". We were lab technicians in the path labs at UCD Earlsfort terrace and forgot to get out in time to go back to work. We just sat in the corner and had a few. Later that evening I was walking down Grafton street and was telling a senior technician called Jack what had happened. I thought it might impress him. He was listening politely to this country lad from Kildare telling the tale when the bold Luke appeared on the other side of the street, having just left the pub. Howaye Lukie shouted Jack. Howaya Jack he shouted back. I was mortified as it turned out they had grown up together and knew each others families intimately.
Lovely song, lovely voice. I perform this song.... did it last Friday at a gig. Only in recent years did I learn that Philip Coulter, the song writer, also wrote "Puppet on a String" for Sandy Shaw and many more hits.
What a muted reaction from the audience. After wiping the tears from my eyes, I would have been up on my feet stomping and clapping and cheering...oooh, if only...
Actually sobbing for our lost / stolen happy life. Ie our way of finding love amongst our own. There is no other love and it truly is this unconditional / forgiving love of our own kind that waters life. Nothing else.
Returned from Ireland three weeks ago. It was my first time there. What a wonderful country! I will return. This song is on the CD I got. I start shivering when listening to it.
Luke was a dead ringer for my childhood buddy Johnny Carroll. Our fathers were buddies and both of them were first generation from Ireland.. Johnny and I went to a Catholic school and had fights almost daily with the un-uniformed kids from the public school. 55 years later, I miss my friend. My wife has asked me why the Irish always fight,, because we had to Also the question was asked,” is this a private fight or can anyone join in?”
Lukie, by dint of the comments below, you will NEVER be forgotten. I wish I could have seen you live, I was fortunate enough to see Barney just before he passed, but getting ticket to see you lads was trying to get hold of rocking horse teeth. Rest in peace old son, hopefully we'll have the Craic up there in a few years (hopefully not too soon!)
I understand where you're coming from, Annie. I too am English, I've often noted how the Irish have much more of a unity amongst themselves compared to us. Maybe that comes with a smaller population or years of adversity, who's to say? They're generally lovely folk and you'll find are just like us in many ways, but in the 21st century I'd rather fly the flag of humanity like Luke Kelly must have envisioned. Peace
Annie Waters I always wished I was Irish then I found out I was, feel sorry for the English they have no culture or nothing just the robbing 'royal family ' who are a show.
This was 5 days before Luke collapset at the stage and they found out that he hade cancer, poor man. R.I.P Luke Kelly the greats folk singer of all time.
When did he collapsed? Im quite curious? Also how do you know
Absolutely beautiful rendition by the man himself. I am 24 years of age and I would choose listening to Luke Kelly any day over the music of this decade.
That's real folk. I miss this kind of music, without drums and electric guitar. Why my world here in Finland and Europe is much hard? Make love, not war. All you need is love.
I agreed!!!
I can barely hold back the tears with this song. The human can be such a beast but on the other hand so forgiving. Music, to me, is a medicine to mend broken hearts.
I agree with you. Many times i had to cry, when listening to this song. In my opinion its Dubliner´s best one.
Luke never sings the same song the same twice, this is his best version ❤
Simply magnificiant. Luke was the Best
Completley unique always ,the brilliant Luke Kelly.
There is absolutely nothing so stirring as listening to Luke in full voice. I agree with James B - "please God, give us back Luke Kelly" - His Raglan Road gives me goosebumps. Luke & Ronnie Drew will NEVER be forgotten - great performers.
Luke Kelly is a Legend and will never be forgotton. What a man...
Che Luke Kelly ha una bellissima voce
Just read the family tree in full this past weekend, 20 years late, the family on my father's side come from Wexford and Tipperary. can't claim to be Irish as I am not, just a proud Kiwi with an Irish connection.
You're Irish now buddy 😁 Welcome to the Family 🍀🍀🍀
My parents are from wexford. I was born in London. The only time I'm truly happy is when I'm at a Irish gathering when we have a drink and singsong. Be proud of your Irish heritage.
@@lawrencedoyle2192 I am, and it's funny my brother on law just me his grandfather lived in Bunclody for 42 years and only left when his wife died.
God bless Luke Kelly and the Dubliners and all the irish people. You Stay in my heart and my soul.
nobody sings it better than good old Luke
My Kids are second generation plastics now, but playing Luke Kelly's songs I try and give them a feeling of their Heritage..He was the best...many happy memories.
Thank God we have all these videos and recordings of Luke to keep him alive. Some artists never get recorded so no one remembers them.
Luke, your short time on this earth was spent well. One of the greatest vocalists ever. Those of your family left behind will always be proud that you were once here.
Luke and Ronnie, you are the greatest. Your voices are immortal.
their music lives on ..💚🤍💛
This is one of those songs that, because of the solemnity given off by their absolute perfection, I can listen to only in that rare, wonderful state of mind that you have to be in to lie on the grass to gaze at the stars.

The best of the best.God bless the Dubliners.RIP
Good man Luke the only man for this song the voice of Ireland
God Bless Luke and all the Dubliners...may they play together forever in our hearts.
Luke could bring a tear to a glass eye, what a performer he truly was. Backed by the rest of the Dubs, all masters of their craft.
IF Our irish politicians could put,1/10 of effort in to our country it would be great .But we have these great legends to fall back on and bring some happiness to the people. GOD BLESS them all.
Politicians have no scruples they don't care about the man in the street, only themselfs.
The trick with doing this song justice is to sing it like a love song, not a rebel song, some people make the error of blasting it at full volume.
The troubles in those days were a tragedy. Thank God those days are over.
John sheahan is such a brilliant fiddle player. Ireland's best
God bless you Luke, a great irishman
It could bring even the hardest heart to tears.
This song is so beautiful...
All the pain and emotion!

Luke did love this orange flowered shirt. Wore it for his last recorded performance in 1984. Another time in a 1980 clip. Simple yet complex man.
Lovely song, lovely voice. I perform this song.... did it last Friday at a gig. Only in recent years did I learn that Philip Coulter, the song writer, also wrote "Puppet on a String" for Sandy Shaw and many more hits.
A great Irish song - and overwhelming performance - from the very heart...
What a muted reaction from the audience. After wiping the tears from my eyes, I would have been up on my feet stomping and clapping and cheering...oooh, if only...
