  • Today I will be recovering the targa top on my 1977 911. This had been done one time before and now it needs all the webbing, foam and rivets replaced. I will tear it down to the frame, prep the frame for paint, paint the frame and then build up the top again. I bought a kit that included factory type top vinyl and also a stitched headliner. I find this to be pretty challenging as if you get this wrong, you could introduce leaks or noise while driving. I sure looks great now that it is replaced and can work on getting this car on the road.

Once again, thank you for this video. This is your subscriber on the West Coast Los Angeles. With your help I was able to do my top and I didn’t have to spend $1600-$2000. I bought all my parts from Pelican Parts that’s near me in Harbor city California. Well, thank you so much. Can’t wait for the next project that you do.

Hey thats great to hear! I didn't find it that hard, and 2-3K is way to much to spend on someone wrapping fabric over a frame. I have another 911 I am working on and the first video will happen soon. I still have a drive video for the red 911 coming. Thanks for subscribing and watching my videos!

There are a couple of top replacement videos that were made over a decade ago and one is in a few different languages. There is also a couple good write-ups on the Pelican forum with some photos. This wasn't really too hard. I got the replacement top and headliner from an eBay seller and it was pretty reasonable. Just got the car outside and no leaks! The channels that these German cars have to direct water away from the center of the car work great. Glad I could help out and thank you for subscribing!

@Jerry Earley This is a two part step by step done by an upholstery shop. Between the AG and these two you should be able to get it done.

Thank you for this question. This is very important to use the correct adhesive or it will come apart. I am surprised I didn't show this, I typically always am touting this product. It is called "DAP Landau top adhesive" and it comes in a light blue can. I have tried all the 3M stuff (77, 80, and 90) and nothing works like the DAP product. You will need air, and a glue sprayer to use this unless you plan on brushing everything. I also see that they now have introduced a spray can of this stuff. It is $20-$30 so not cheap considering you can get a gallon for $50. Good luck and thank you so much for commenting and watching!
