- Under communism the Russian Orthodox Church was suppressed - its property confiscated, its followers ridiculed, harassed and imprisoned.
But these days, a resurgent and muscular church is central to President Vladimir Putin's ideas of Russian identity - an echo chamber, say critics - to Kremlin policies at home and abroad.
"Many of Putin's opponents believe the glowing endorsements and mutual back-slaps the Kremlin and the Orthodox Church give each other these days are contributing to ever more tightly defined social and religious conservatism, intolerant nationalism and a growing personality cult around the president," write filmmakers Glenn Ellis and Viktoryia Kolchyna who went to Russia investigate the relationship between Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church.

What I find bizarre. Is that Al Jazeera is based in Qatar. A very conservative Muslim nation that uses religion and the superiority of the husband/father. Yet criticises Russia for returning to it's religious foundations. Sounds a bit hypocritical.

THIS IS ALL ABOUT AL JAZEERA ENGLISH(I do not know opinions in other al jazeera branches): While it is hypocritical that the news network doesn't critize the Qatar government, it is understandable since it is partially or totally owned by the government of Qatar, so the govt. controls what they can say. Having said that they have been critical of the Saudi Arabian government and prince Mohammed Bin Salman which was part of the reason Qatar was santioned and led to a political crisis. Al Jazeera also does stories on Palestine and Israel and gets inteviews from all sides including Hamas and the IDF. IMO from their interviews and news couverage they don't try to spin a narrative, if they do it is much more suttle than news networks like CNN, BBC, Fox or The sun and most British/American news piece. You don't see Al Jazeera focusing about Qatari or Iranian goverments, not prasing not critizing, just silence.

It is number 138/166 by the world freedom index Economist intelligencer section, which measures things like freedom of speech, movement, choice, religion, and ability to go to school, travel abroad, have a free press. In other words, Al Jazeera is an alleged media outlet in one of the least free societies in the world with no freedom of the press pretending to be a journalistic agency. Russia / the Soviet Union has failed miserably at finding the proper balance or relationship between church and state, going from totally outlawing religion / Christianity during the communist years all the way to the other extreme now, of giving people no freedom to speak out against the Orthodox Church, or to follow another religion, should their personal convictions tell them to do so. In the US, I see the wall of separation between church and state slowly breaking down, and this causes me grave concern, but in Russia, things have gone way further in the direction of religious extremism. Let's see: Vladimir Putin started out as a Soviet KGB agent before the Berlin Wall fell; and so, at that time, with all probability, he was a professing communist atheist; now, he has catapulted all the way over to the other extreme of Russian Orthodox religious nationalism. Here in the United Sates, political demagogues and con men like Donald Trump will candidly admit in private, or to close friends that they don't understand all the religious BS of the evangelical Christian right; nevertheless, when it comes to courting their votes, they are dead serious about it, and will do anything for it, because evangelical Christians are the largest voting block in the United States, comprising over a quarter of the US electorate.
