@@David-pf9xe There were 5 Ancient Patriarchates in 1054. Rome, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem, & Constantinople. Rome is the one who introduced the Filioque (wasn’t part of the Creed before), Rome tried to claim authority over the rest of the Patriarchates (there is zero Church history evidence to show that they had this authority). So the 4 Apostolic Patriarchates (Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, & Alexandria) all cut off ties with Rome and continued the same as they have for 1000 years, while Rome changed drastically.
@@gravelroad1228 nice explanation but left few details out which makes not a small difference. The Patriarch of Rome were called from beginning “ the first among equals “. I know you will argue that still is equal like everybody else , but why the word first is there then ? If you read the bible you will see that in so many cases talks about the “ firstborn son “ . There were many brothers they are all equal to the father but the firstborn son was somewhat different from others. How different was he? Maybe you should go back and read the bible and find out yourself because there are some good examples. The Catholic Church has always been a church of education - virtually every eminent university from Oxford to Cambridge to the Sorbonne to Milan were established by the Catholic Church while I can’t think of a single orthodox university of note.
Because ever since the Byzantine empire, there had been a separation between church and state in the sphere of education. The Byzantine empire kept classical education alive (philosophy and science) as well as political education (civil service training) which were overseen by the imperial state. Contrary to popular belief ancient Greek philosophy and philosophical schools didn't die out nor was philosophical learning banned but they were were simply forbidden to operate independently. The Byzantine government provided the funding for all secular education being of the view that the state should oversee secular affairs whilst the church oversaw religious instruction (training for the priesthood, doctrinal education etc). The church and state had two distinct roles in the education of the Byzantine people and both coexisted harmoniously. The orthodox church therefore never had to establish church run schools or universities as the state saw the importance of having a decently educated citizenry (particularly the civil service) to run the empire. For a theocratic empire like the Byzantines they were on whole very liberal (in our modern understanding concerning the separation of church and state) in their education system. And this translated into the orthodox church as many see it's role as one of religious and spiritual education and that the church has nothing to contribute in terms of science and classical liberal studies (eg. Philosophy, rhetoric, music, poetry, literature, natural sciences, arithmetic etc.). One of the greatest contention between the ecclesiastical involvement in education as in the western Catholic system and the pure religious education of the orthodox-byzantine system was the controversy between St Gregory of Palamas, an orthodox bishop and Barlaam, a monk educated in the western Catholic style who bought his scholastic (a combination between Greek philosophy and Christian theology) education to a theological debate concerning man's ability to know God (Hesychast controversy). St. Gregory argued that logic and reason are not sufficient tools for man to understand God and that only through the church and Christ (love of our fellow brothers and sisters, holy communion and prayerful silence and contemplation eg. Theoria) can man truly come to know God. The split in the thinking concerning man's epistemological ability to comprehend the Divine highlights the clear division between the western style education (mixing secular and religious education) and the eastern style. The Orthodox know their limits but remain confident in their faith, never having to justify it through secular knowledge concerning science and philosophy, their faith as being a gift from God and not a academic endeavour where one earns faith and have to prove it. This way of thinking truly makes the Orthodox faith a treasure, the pearl of great price; it's value is not in showy display (academic knowledge of its scholars and priests) but inner beauty (the humility and faith of its most humble and sinful faithful). And to me, as an Japanese orthodox Christian, this history is what makes the orthodox church and it's people admirable. The mentality of knowing ones place, knowing ones limits and acting out ones faith in a humble, serene and graceful manner which in contrast to the grandiose and pompous manner of the catholics and verbose and assertive (and try-hard) manner of the protestants are aspects which are most admirable about the orthodox.
They are historically notoriously bad at education level. The orthodox hierarchs (except the russian ones maybe) acquire their education at some protestant universities abroad.
"They want to destroy the Christian faith" But... we're Christians as well, lady. We have almost the same Saints before the Schism, and some after the Schism. Stop talking nonsense.

This a great rewriting of history. "The Orthodox church started collaborating with communism." From where??? Their prison cells??? And no one in the Orthodox church has any problems with Roman catholics or anyone else's right to exist. But that's the Roman Catholic Church for you. They say we're all brothers, they say we're all part of the same church, but in reality they don't believe any of that. In reality they hate us just as much today as they always have.

John 13:34-35 (NIV): "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." Despite the commandment of Jesus Christ their Lord, some professed "followers of Christ" end up preaching and showing hatred or hostility towards other Christians across the man-made political, denominational and/or doctrinal divide. Behind the struggle for power and influence, their hatred could be driven by primordial instincts of fear and insecurity. But God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). May God have mercy on us all.

TK UA You are wrong there is not a small difference, but an abysmal, it is easy to say that when you do not understand what each one promulgates, the Orthodox never wanted unity, that is why they left and for that reason I think they do not have the truth, Protestants are a creation of the nobility, they wanted their own religion, so they invented some. There only left the catholic church.
Fighting is the basis of that culture. It not religion, it's politics or economics or any number of reasons. Look at the security services going at each other even in peaceful times.
The issue is not theological but national identity. The Orthodox Churches are strongly identified by their national and cultural identities - Greek, Bulgarian, Russian, Albanian, Ukrainian, Finnish, Romanian, etc. The ethnic identity does influence Catholicism as well, which accounts for the Catholic churches established according to ethnic identity, such as Irish, German, Polish, Italian, Lithuanian, Slovak, etc, but the groups intermingled and intermarried, and the churches were seen simply as Catholic. When Catholics step upon the land of Holy Mother Russia, it's seen as an incursion and a negation of the Russian, cultural slurry through which the faith developed and grew. Moreover, the rivalry between the Greeks and Latins was ferocious, and the paranoia of the Russians towards the Latin West is even seen explicitly in the grand opera, Boris Godunov. John Paul II was never going to be invited to Russia, because Poland was always seen as the major threat to culture and faith. Another issue is that there can be only one bishop within a canonical diocese. To place another bishop within the territory means that one if the bishops, a fortiori, is a usurper, according to the Orthodox. My family is Roman Catholic, Carpatho-Russian Orthodox and Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic. When I say Mass in my hometown, all three groups show up for the Mass, and all receive Communion, but this is the USA. Our respect for one another's faith and traditions runs deep. Sometimes I feel we should let the Russian and Greek Churches live in splendid isolation, but people have a right to their choice of faith expression. In the Orthodox tradition, the practice of caesaropapism went with the culture - ruling together emperor (tsar) and patriarch. That is what we see today regarding Putin and Kirill. Even though Rome has had the establishment of and the links with Catholic monarchs, the "Holy" Roman Empire, it was tempered by the Vatican's constant struggle for independence from the secular leaders in Church matters. Thus, the independent nation of Vatican City. Our embrace is many time warm and enthusiastic, such as among the Christians of the Middle East. Ending on an relevant and interesting note, when John Paul II made his biblical pilgrimage to the places of Scripture and the steps of St. Paul, he received a very rough and cold reception by the Greek Orthodox in Egypt and Sinai. Anticipating his visit to Athens, the lay synod of the Greek Orthodox Church in the US wrote the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople expressing their outrage at the treatment of the Pope by their church in Egypt. They spoke of the bonds of friendship and affection between Greeks and Latins in the US and their deep respect toward the Pope and insisted they would not tolerate such treatment of John Paul II in Athens or Istanbul. They even unambiguously threatened to withhold funds to both Athens and Constantinople if John Paul II were shown disrespect. A miracle occurred when the Pope, during the meeting in Athens with the Greek bishops, expressed in the most heartfelt way his sorrow for the affront and destruction wreaked upon Constantinople by the Latin Crusaders and deeply apologized for the sins of the Catholic Church toward its Greek brothers and sisters. The reaction was stunning and emotional - an historical move toward healing a deep wound. Moreover, Orthodox patriarchs have been given their own beautiful churches for their liturgical use in Rome.
And now that this union has been consummated, we can see the filth the RC unleashed in the World with same-sex marriages infecting the Greek Orthodox churches in America. Where ever is catholicism there is sodom and Gomorrah.

I have to take this documentary in context, being it was filmed in 2002. I was curious as to why the RC's were building such a huge church in Pskov? Did they have such a huge RC congregation to fill it? Most of the RC's in Russia are of Polish or Lithuanian descent, or descendants of Ukrainian Eastern Rite Catholics living in Russia. Very few are Orthodox who flipped. I think the Orthodox should worry about Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, and Hare Krishnas a bit more than RCs, and those in Orthodoxy (today as against 2002) should further question why they want the enter the RC church led by Francis?
Why would it be a cause for your curiosity why Catholics are building a big Church?! Are you being forced in any way by the Catholic Church to contribute money? No? Then it does not concern you.
@Brooklyn Dave As you say, this is a 2002 production but it gives context to what is going on now on 2022 with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It confirms the danger when church and state rule together. There were 5 Ancient Patriarchates in 1054.
I never knew that 😃
Because ever since the Byzantine empire, there had been a separation between church and state in the sphere of education.
The only Orthodox "school" outside Russia I no, is the Institut Saint Serge Paris.
They are historically notoriously bad at education level. The orthodox hierarchs (except the russian ones maybe) acquire their education at some protestant universities abroad.

John 13:34-35 (NIV): "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Despite the commandment of Jesus Christ their Lord, some professed "followers of Christ" end up preaching and showing hatred or hostility towards other Christians across the man-made political, denominational and/or doctrinal divide. Behind the struggle for power and influence, their hatred could be driven by primordial instincts of fear and insecurity.
But God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
May God have mercy on us all.
