Hey man, I would like to make a request: make a video about the religion of Spiritism, which comes from the Spiritist Doctrine of Allan Kardec. I'm sure it will be really cool! In addition, I have to say that I simply love your content and I think the didactic and humorous way in which you pass on information is amazing! Congratulations! ✌🏽❤️
when you mention "women are outlawed" in the title, it almost in way shows a certain level of disrespect to the monks. You need to understand that these are holy men and in order to get to a high level of spirituality, in the beginning stages they must learn to overcome temptations faced by the common man, from which lustful desires of being around women can invoke such feelings. Since the monks themselves are just human and not perfect, they must go through such rigorous amounts of discipline as they can't have any distractions leading them from their ultimate goal of getting closer to GOD. They don't do this out of hatred for women. They do it to get closer to the divine.
I just visited the Holy Mountain. It truly is a relic from the past. Amazing video, I'd like to pinpoint that there are also monasteries with non greek monks. For example, the Serbian, the Romanian and the Russian. ☦️🇬🇷🇷🇸🇷🇴🇷🇺
Both correct and technically false at the same time. You see while it truly stands that there are monasteries that were originally patroned and are mainly maned by non Greeks ( Russian panteleimonos, Serbian Hilandar, Bulgarian zografou, Romanian Saint Paul's and Georgian Ibiron( Iberian)), everyone once admitted as a monk in Mount Athos receives the Greek citizenship. So technically they're (also) Greeks
@@JimboPresi22 Yeah, no. Serbian, Russian, Bulgarian, Greek... Are actual ethnicities not citizenships and owning a different passport doesn't change that. The issue is that "the west" has abandoned the concept of ethnicities and sees itself just as a collection of random individuals who have the same passports.
Just few inaccuraties, when my father and I went to Mount Athos couple years ago to visit serbian monastery Hilandar (one of the biggest and oldest one there) no we didn't needed to apply for that special visa months in advance, we got it right on the spot, the same very day in fact, only if you want to visit on great holidays like Christmas and Easter you need to apply in advance because of number of pilgrims that would flock to Holly Mountain. Nobody ask us if we are ortodox christians so technically we could be buddists (my father is not even baptised btw, grow up in communist Yugoslavia/Serbia). Not sure for numbers of people allowed but rules and regulations do differ from monastery to monastery. Only strict prerequisites is that you are a man, that you dress "modesty" - no earrings, piercings and short shorts. Oh and you can be there more than three days no problem, but you must ask monks for blessing, permission that is. There is a van ride from coast to monastery. For the actual staying there, yes as you say here you will be awaken in 3 or like in Hilandar in 4 o'clock in the morning and you would be expected to come to liturgy (holly mass in ortodoxy). You are not allowed to take photos of monks (only if they give you explicit permission). It is quite calm there as I remember. And yes you are definitely right when you say that Athos is time capsule in like everything! Great video man! 👍
That's really interesting. Just like you, my dad and I visited Mount Athos last month. He was told by his cousin, who had been there before, that he needed to apply for the special visa, which we got the morning we took the boat to our first monastery. The interesting thing was that No One even asked to look at it (we didn't go on Christmas or Easter), so that might explain our confusion. Although, we did have to contact the monasteries months in advance so they would let us stay there, which we learned was very inefficient. (I understand why. The monks are very busy.)
One of the reasons that the monks wanted to place Mount Athos under Hitler's protection during WWII was not only to escape German reprisals, but a Bulgarian invasion as well, since the Bulgarians took most of Greek Macedonia at that time, and wanted to take Mount Athos as well.
@@rafanadir6958Not the monks, but the Bulgarian army who had a policy of de-Hellenization and Bulgarification in the lands they had taken (Macedonia and Thrace) back then.
@TheOnlyWayNow777 Same they did with most of Macedonia in the Greek and Yugoslav parts during the Macedonian question, the Balkan Wars, and the World Wars. They will pursue a policy of Bulgarification in the newly acquired lands and end the Hellenic language that was present throughout millennia. Just because a country is Orthodox doesn't mean it's a trustworthy ally in the long run. The Russians for example had a poilicy of Russification throughout most of their history, especially in the Caucasus (Circassia), the Baltics (Finland), and the Balkans (Moldova). They still do in the current Russo-Ukraine war, taking children from occupied territories and indoctrinating them that they are part of the Russian people, and not Ukrainian.

the problem isn’t rlly “no women allowed”, it’s that female taxpayers have money going to a location where they literally are not allowed, and could go to jail if they attempt. men are not jailed for entering those convents.

So while Karyes is the main administrative center, the place that people get to by boat is the port of Dafni. In regard to instances of women going to Mount Athos: In May 2008, five Moldovans illegally entered Greece by way of Turkey, ending up in the monastic community. Four of these migrants were women. The monks forgave them for trespassing and informed them that the area was forbidden to females. But earlier that year in January, there was a protest there by a thousand Greek women. They went there because five monasteries claimed 8,100 hectares (20,000 acres) of land that wasn't within Mount Athos on the rest of the Chalkidiki Peninsula.
@@terminator-from-another-planet It's our religion and the Truth. It's not misogynistic because hatred isn't the reason why women aren't allowed on the island. You don't have the ability to judge the hearts of these monks. But I know they have a Queen who they honor and love.
Yeah, the only people who live there are those completely dedicated to spiritual development. It’s not like it’s just a normal country that outlaws women. I see it more as how in most monastic traditions, men and women are in separate monasteries. They could just ban everyone from coming unless you are a monk but they decided to allow some people, you just have to follow their rules. One of which is only men are allowed. I really don’t see how this affects almost anyone. I would assume the women who would want to come are devote Orthodox, which would in turn mean they probably respect the tradition of the monks.

Wow! There is also a greek proverb that says something like that. I don't know if I can translate it correctly. It says: "I have lived there where you are... but sometime, you will also come where I am now" As a Greek woman, I can totally understand the mentality. It's just a serious spiritual matter. Monks have to fight their physical sexual excitement. They have to pray to God and stay in an inner peace of mind. There are some monks that they can not live their whole life in this way, so the leave Mount Athos. But they are a few. Most of them want to obey all spiritual rules. There is a legend about the seven invisible ascetics, that they can appear when there is a spiritual reason. Some say they have seen such men in Mount Athos. Incredible.
I think I agree with the monks on women being band from there. They have been there living like that and taking care of themselves for a thousand year, I think they should have a right to choose who can come and who can't, it's their way of living their religion.
Well technically women have lived on Athos, usually as labourers or the wives of labourers. The ban has really only hardened to a total ban in the last 1-2 centuries.

Great video! Mount Athos is a fascinating place. I also plan to make a video about it at some point since as you said, there are quite some political peculiarities that come with it. A few things I’d like to add here: 0:59 The comparison to the Vatican is made often, but I don’t think it's very fitting. The Vatican is the actual center of Catholicism due to it being the home of the Holy See. But Orthodoxy doesn’t have a single center but multiple, as there are a multitude of Orthodox churches - each with their own seat - and none of those are on Athos. Athos is definitely a special and holy place for orthodox christians, but it doesn’t have the same function as the Vatican does in Catholicism. There are many other things which make the Vatican radically different, but enough on that :’ ) 5:15 That's not entirely true, because a number of monasteries on Athos are not part of the Greek-Orthodox Church or Church of Constantinople, but of other Orthodox churches (there is e.g. a Bulgarian-Orthodox monastery, Serbian-Orthodox one, a Romanian-Orthodox one, etc.). And those monasteries also answer to their respective Patriarch. Nominally, all Patriarchs of the Orthodox Church are equals - however, the Patriarch of Constantinople has a special symbolic and spiritual role. 11:17 Since 1980, there is an official, joint theological commission for dialogue, and since then dialogs have been quite frequent - although communion is still far away.
I am (Greek) orthodox. I was born and raised in Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece which is located on the north of the county, relatively near to Mount Athos. My family has strong ties with Mount Athos. Your second point is not completely right. It’s true that in Orthodox Christianity we have a synodical form of church governance (autocephaly), it’s also true that Constantinople holds a special place of honor within Orthodoxy and serves as the seat for the Ecumenical Patriarch, who enjoys the status of primus inter pares (first among equals) among the world's Eastern Orthodox prelates, however Mount Athos falls under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and New Rome. So, the monasteries of Mount Athos answer exclusively to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Imagine, that the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece doesn’t have jurisdiction over Mount Athos, and Mount Athos is de jure part of Greece. The Greek state has specific political and administrative powers over Mount Athos - I don’t want to enlarge upon the legal details because they are complicated namely EU treaties, Greek Constitution etc -as it is an integral part of the Greek territory and the “Mother Church” title of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople spiritually and ecclesiastically guides and governs the autonomous monastic state.
@@stylianospallas490 Thanks for the input! You are definitely right, officially the monasteries on Athos answer only to Constantinople. However, in practice, the non-Greek monasteries also answer to their respective head of church - in some cases probably more so than to the ecumenical patriarch. The most striking example is the Russian-Orthodox monastery St. Panteleimon, which of course has the additional problem that there is an ongoing schism between the Russian-Orthodox church and the church of Constantinople. As you say, Orthodox Church politics are quite complicated and messy, and often what's officially the case looks very different in practice.
Very interesting video, and I'm a Greek myself 😁 First time as well that I see a video on mount Athos and someone mentions that a different time is being used, plus all of the other things. Great research Cogito.
The fact that people criticize the ban on women at all shows how little respect these people have for old cultures and traditions. The ban is perfectly fine and hopefully it stays in place for all eternity. Leave these monks their religious life and their religious traditions alone! It's such a small community worth protecting.
Technically women lived on the mountain before since there are burials of women from medieval times there. Most likely labourers or the wives of labourers. So the more traditional thing would be to revert to that state of affairs rather than having Greece enforce a law and jail sentence. You also have the problem of the monks engaging with other non-monkish activities such as loans, and the buying and selling of property in Greece to build investment portfolios, along with inviting Vladimir Putin and other heads of state to the Mountain regularly. Why do you think it is that all these non-religious activities are considered ok but the idea of a woman simply setting foot on the peninsula is a crime?
@@professorslothingtons7471 I agree, not all...when they affect how the civil population is evolving. They literally are monks in isolation...they don't have a voice in the state, they have their own place with their own rules...as they always had. So, it's a little problematic to put such a weight on an enclosed community to open up just because we the outsiders feel that's the rules they have for themselves are not ok for us...
I think the Ban on women in Mount Athos is reasonable. They are monks , and they need to be celibate , and for people who have never seen the opposite gender in 20 plus years , women can be distracting..😅
The Esfigmenou monastery has also formed a kind of "cult" in the rest of Orthodoxy in Greece. They call themselves G.O.Ch. (TRUE Orthodox Christians), don't accept communion from other Orthodox churches and they have their own priests annointed only from Esfigmenou. Oh, and they also use the Julian calendar. They are generally called Palaioimerologites (literally: old calendar). My mom grew up in such a family. My grandpa is still pretty intense.
Im not Orthodox, I live on the Pacific Coast of the US. If the EU tries to force the Monastery to let woman in, I will take up the crusade to defend the mountain. Woman have and should have spaces reserved just for them, and men should have the same. Im not going to try an force myself into a nunnery.
Misogyny means a hatred or distrust of women. If you think the reason for the ban on Mt Athos is misogyny (which you do, as you said so), I'd encourage you to look a little closer at that. The Orthodox Church, which proclaims the Virgin Mary more honorable than the Cherubim and more glorious than the Seraphim, upholds a standard of equality of women and men not seen anywhere else in the world.
It's self governing, but not a recognized state. That's basically the textbook definition of an autonomous region, not a state. A bit of a clickbaity title, guys.
I want to live there so badly. I don't hate women, I wish to see what brotherhood really looks like. Psalm 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
Hi Cogito, one important detail. Back in the WWII the monks of Mount Athos didn't ask for Germans to be under their protection just because...After Greece's victory over the Italian invasion, Germany together with Italy and Bulgaria orchestrated a combined attack. They all invaded Greece and separate the country into administrative zones. Bulgaria took parts of the north, parts that wanted to have since the Balkans wars. Bulgarians in Greece wanted to annex parts of Greece...so, in those areas many atrocities happened and the local population was forced to leave...along that line, bulgarians attacked Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries, stripped them from their relics and replaced them with Bulgarian priests. So Athos, since it was known to be the most desirable Monastic community of all Orthodoxs and many wanted to capture before (bulgarians, Russians etc) had a very well understanding of the situation...being under Germans it will not just provide them with some safety but actually to protect the history of all this place to keep standing without facing a nationalistic neighbor who would take their relics and replace them with bulgarians. It is quite important fact about the ongoing "fight" these people give, about retaining their old legacy but also ethnography as group since the early medieval times...I was very sad not hear about their understanding reasons, it sounded more like they acted opportunistic which is exactly what they didn't
I don't see their ban on women as a mysoginyst thing since their goal is to stay away from distractions and focus on God and spiritual growth. It's more of a Chad move for them to take precautions about something that could bring them problems or distractions in their spiritual path.( like false accusations or actions that none of the parties desire)

Mount Athos monks have been investigated for property fraud and crimes. By your logic since theft and lying are sins then the monks on Athos cannot commit crimes since they are sins. Does it not seem more likely that the monks on Athos are men and are capable of crimes and sin? The entire point of Athos is that these men believe they are likely to in and so go live on a mountain to reduce exposure, even they themselves believe themselves to be easy sinners.
The reason why The Holy Virgin Mary was the only woman who's allowed to step foot on Mt. Athos was because, according to Orthodox Christian tradition, The Holy Virgin was there when she was on the way to visit Lazarus (the guy Jesus ressurected from death) in Greece. She was with John the Apostle in some traditions, because he was her caretaker as she got so much older by then. The Holy Virgin went from Jerusalem to Greece by boat, but the boat was stranded on the island where the mountain is. She saw the mountain & loved the vibe or something, so she prayed to God that the mountain could be a holy place on earth. God granted it & the natives converted to Christianity not long after. As monks came in, they dedicated the mountain for The Holy Virgin Mary because of this.
Mount Athos is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, our mother. A place of prayer, for all the world and spiritual struggle for over 1000 years. As a woman I respect that tradition...and if it was any other religion I expect you would too.
And then there are places where no one regardless of gender is allowed to visit...unless you're a shorebird. This is the case with North Brother Island off the coast of the Bronx. It was home to Riverside Hospital that housed patients with quarantinable diseases like tuberculosis. The place is haunted because of Mary Mallon, nicknamed Typhoid Mary who lived and died there. All the buildings on the island are extremely dilapidated. After this, different kinds of shorebirds started thriving there. Because of these two reasons, they don't allow visitors between March and September due to shorebird breeding season, and even during the time you technically can, they still won't let you unless you have "compelling academic and scientific purposes that are a benefit to NYC Parks". It gets stranger too! Nearby is another haunted island called Hart Island. Basically, MANY people are buried there (more than one million; from Civil War to the pandemic) and it also had dilapidated buildings that the city ordered to demolish in 2021. They restrict access to this island to the public unless you're visiting a loved one buried there (which they offer visits twice a month) or you're the media.

I don't think most people would have even known about this place existing. Most people who go to Greece go there for the islands or historical places not for religious sites of other religions.
You would be surprised by how many women tried to sneak up or enter that place, so much that the Greek authorities started to put signs forbidden women to approach the place and even create more punishable laws to discourage such attempts in case someone tries to illegally enter
Is not a touristic destination...is about religious contemplation and it has its own rules. So, that's how this place works for thousand of years. Men in isolation

Great video, but it's not a simple case of misogyny. Some abbots actually leave their monasteries occasionally to comfort people living in the world, including of course women. If women are allowed, the place risks becoming a tourist attraction. Also, these people genuinely believe that Mount Athos was chosen by the Virgin Mary to be her select garden. The conversation practically ends there when it comes to beliefs, all beliefs, where there isn't much room for reason. But personally, I think similarly large convents (like Ormylia in Thessaloniki for instance) should also in turn enforce a ban on male visitors. Temptation and distraction come from both sides and can affect both monks and nuns, and if women are not allowed into a peninsula with 20 monasteries, then perhaps laymen should in turn be banned from visiting 20 convents across Greece.
I am also one of those who believe that Holy Mother chose the peninsula as her garden and for that women are not allowed.westerners and atheists calling the ban misogynist isnt only disrespectful to the monks, they are also to my faith. And they indeed are ignorant to the fact that men are banned from many female monasteries as well. The misogyny claim is ridiculous to say the least.
What you want to believe is up to you. But then do not take public government funds, which are from both males and females. That is what is disrespectful.if yiu want a mens only club , by all means have one. But then raise funds and be self sufficient. And if there are public funded nunneries, and males can't visit, same story. Unfortunately many religons treat women as second class less than men people..

One woman is allowed on Mt Athos. Their Queen Mother. She's appeared to the monks over the centuries and always attends Liturgy.

I just visited the Holy Mountain. It truly is a relic from the past. Amazing video, I'd like to pinpoint that there are also monasteries with non greek monks. For example, the Serbian, the Romanian and the Russian. ☦️🇬🇷🇷🇸🇷🇴🇷🇺
And Bulgarian.
@@JimboPresi22 Papers cannot change your origin, so technically they are not Greeks.
@@JimboPresi22 Yeah, no. Serbian, Russian, Bulgarian, Greek... Are actual ethnicities not citizenships and owning a different passport doesn't change that. @@petarjovanovic1481 who told you that ?
Thank you for adding more context and your personal experience. It was really interesting

Why? Don't they have a presence there too?

They will pursue a policy of Bulgarification in the newly acquired lands and end the Hellenic language that was present throughout millennia. Just because a country is Orthodox doesn't mean it's a trustworthy ally in the long run. The Russians for example had a poilicy of Russification throughout most of their history, especially in the Caucasus (Circassia), the Baltics (Finland), and the Balkans (Moldova). They still do in the current Russo-Ukraine war, taking children from occupied territories and indoctrinating them that they are part of the Russian people, and not Ukrainian.

As a Greek woman, I can totally understand the mentality.
I have a suspicion Mr. Pink, that if the place banned all men and was just for women, your response would be very different.

Great video! Mount Athos is a fascinating place. I also plan to make a video about it at some point since as you said, there are quite some political peculiarities that come with it. A few things I’d like to add here:
0:59 The comparison to the Vatican is made often, but I don’t think it's very fitting. There are many other things which make the Vatican radically different, but enough on that :’ )
5:15 That's not entirely true, because a number of monasteries on Athos are not part of the Greek-Orthodox Church or Church of Constantinople, but of other Orthodox churches (there is e.g. a Bulgarian-Orthodox monastery, Serbian-Orthodox one, a Romanian-Orthodox one, etc.).
The idea to make a video about that is cool
Very interesting video, and I'm a Greek myself 😁
First time as well that I see a video on mount Athos and someone mentions that a different time is being used, plus all of the other things.
Not all old cultures and traditions should be respected, have you learned history at all?

It is quite important fact about the ongoing "fight" these people give, about retaining their old legacy but also ethnography as group since the early medieval times...I was very sad not hear about their understanding reasons, it sounded more like they acted opportunistic which is exactly what they didn't

mysoginistic? hate? hate is a sin, so that means being mysogenistic is a sin so there is no mysogenism in Mount Athos.
They banned women due to sin and lust. Some are the reasons.
Happiest place on Earth.
At least everyone is equally band on these two examples.

Its not that we dont care about misogyny. There is no misogyny to begin with. Everything has its place and time and if anything women have the highest place thnx to Theotokos. Those claims are a joke to say the least.
I bet this place is runs like a well oiled machine

There has been an increase in women only spaces in the world that don't allow men. But if men do it, it is considered misogynistic?
Cogito: It's quiet because there are no women there.

Tell that to a 20 year old male willing to practice celibacy. (you know, total celibacy, no masturbation, not even fantasising)
I think they "s*xualized" enough with "C0rnography", OF and other such abominations.
Usually agree with you, but I am 100% on the other side of the admittance of women issue. It's one unique place and not particularly important. We see this similarly with PoC, LGBT, or female only spaces in the United States. White, straight, or transgendered people, men, etc. make a similar argument that they pay taxes that these organizations ultimately get a small piece of. I see it just not a big deal and it should be left alone.
if you don't think Mount Athos is of importance, then you have no reason to go anyway. You are actively seeking conflict
@@DoIoannToKnow Yes, I do not think it is really all that important to the sort of women (non-lower-case orthodox Christians). They just want what is forbidden.
I went there and after 4 days I returned to mainland and didn't want to lift my eyes to see women again. It's not against women, it's about not willing to lose the quietness I got from this place. I recommend the writings of Saint Silouan, monk at the russian monastery who died in 1938.
Truly a bastion of the past. Great video!
It is not bastion of the past. It is present. And generally what monks would say there is no time , past present future.

Hello from Greece. One correction please on a very important matter: The patriarch of Istanbul is NOT the "Pope of Orthodoxy" not even on spiritual matters. That's a huge misunderstanding. Thanks!
I'm not even sure if you are from Greece. The title of the Patriarch is Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople...no one in Greece says Istanbul even when about the city alone. "Patriarch of Istanbul"?????? Lol there's no even such a thing
The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is the spiritual leader of all Orthodoxs and is the "first among equals" since the days of the Byzantine Empire and recognized as such by all Orthodoxs. Only a Turk would have call the Ecumenical Patriarch just as a patriarch and of Istanbul 😂🤣😂
Please say something in Greek...lol
@@vanmars5718 I gave you my answer in greek although your message was not very polite. In english all people know this city as Istanbul, and many Greeks abroad call it like that. Why do you try to correct me on my statement? The "Pope of Orthodoxy" is not accepted by any orthodox for any Patriarch. Not even on spiritual issues as every orthodox knows (according to Orthodoxy) even the Patriarch could be wrong and a simple member of the Church who is not even priest could be right.
@@kravatarnihailes6489 Hear to me more carefully. The title is "Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople"...not because I'm sayin it...That's his title! There's no such a thing as Patriarch of Istanbul...no matter how the city is called is the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. You should check the encyclopedia.
And indeed he is the spiritual leader of all Orthodoxs and he still has some privileges among all other patriarchs in various matters.
So, your comment in reality is highly distorting and false.

I think Mt. Athos' sovereignty should be respected. The ban on women is their choice, and its an outpost of ancient history, and should be respected for that.
Guys can't have Men's Clubs anymore without some women trying to ruin it.
Exactly.
Two most beautiful moments for me here are the fact that Ottoman Sultan actually respected Athos, and the fact that Athos kinda wore a fassade and yet protected Allied soldiers. God bless the holy mountain Athos, and Orthodoxy!

Mount Athos is a UNESCO heritage site
Keep your SECULAR LOGIC out of our Holy place!!!!!!
Temptation and distraction come from both sides and can affect both monks and nuns, and if women are not allowed into a peninsula with 20 monasteries, then perhaps laymen should in turn be banned from visiting 20 convents across Greece.
what on earth do you mean by , "If women are allowed, the place risks becoming a tourist attraction."
@@freshgasflow orthodoxy treats women very well. But we also recognise that there is a place and time for everything. These monks dont want outside influences not because of misogyny but because of attention, better consetration in order to give a better fight against satan and his demons and give their prayers for the entire world. These monks pray for me and you and every man and woman out there. That alone deserves every peny in my book. Lets aay you have an important job in your house that would determine the fate of the city and then you had every possible distraction hit your door for whatever reason... Is that good or bad?
@@freshgasflow also greek state is not a secular state. Its an orthodox christian state. So the state should fund the monasteries one way or the other (i think thr state became secular pretty recently but calling the nation secular is a big joke because the law not only didnt seperate the church but made the last even more connected to the state)
