  • Putin's family values: This weeks classic takes us to Russia to meet the country's most prolific parents. The government's expansionist intentions have extended into family life, where they award ultra-fertile parents, including a family with 18 children.
But the darker side of the resurgence of traditional values is the rise in homophobia and removal of women’s rights. Marcel Theroux went to find out more.

Respect your choice and take responsibility for choosing right partner maybe? If you trust your partner, you would mind he legally can hit you because you know he wouldn't do it. You does need law to protect you from strangers, not from someone you let be so close.
Trust is traditional value. And responsibility for your choice. No one forces anyone to become family.

Reality check for everyone here: I am myself, from Russia. Was born and lived there for 14 years. Church is one of the greatest things in this country, it unites people. But also, all these churches (at least most of them) are telling people that church is independent, but its completely untrue. Government builds more churches than people can attend to/needed. People constantly donate money to church and invest their savings into their church. Everyone who works at this church, they volunteer so they don't get paid, except the patriarch. As you can see at 5:16 when you take a look at his house, its clearly not the same as 99.9% of population. It looks all decorated and fancy. Now, think about this...in the country where average salary of the person is 200$ a month...do you really think someone who is so average and honest, would be able to afford this mansion?...I love the people and how church unites them and shows them how to love. But the entire system, the people who run the church, they disgust me...

@@NEY-uu3lx The two churches had been what you could call "separate" for several hundred years before the Great Schism due to political and doctrinal disputes between the churches and empires of the fallen Roman Empire (I'm talking about the enmity between the Byzantine Empire and the West).
You see, the Pope, back then, was also a political figure as well as a religious one, and the Byzantines didn't want to submit to his political authority.
The Great Schism (when the Orthodox Church excommunicated the Catholic Church) happened after the sack of Constantinople by Crusaders sent by the Pope, even though they were not under his command and the sack of Constantinople was not ordered by the Pope. So the split is more political than religious I think, and it wasn't because of one specific heresy but because of many years of continued hostilities. The two branches of Christianity aren't so hostile to each other nowadays, and they cooperate on many occasions.

We have such contrasts in the United States also. You can find rich people with liberal values and poor people with traditional values and vice versa. You can choose and manipulate to try to prove your point. They could easily have found another Russian priest with a large family living modestly. They are trying to show people with a "traditionalist' world view in a bad light. Believe me if they interviewed the other woman, they would probably have found her a little bit too traditionalist for their liking also. The woman who adopted so many children literally has no time to clean up and decorate even if she had the money. I adopted only 3 older Russian children, on top of my 2 biological children, and had little time for a lot of decorating and home improvement. The priest's wife is super organized but she does not have to deal with children that had severe trauma in their lives as is typical of Russian orphans.

I am a Russian orthodox Christian American. And I have a lot of mixed feelings about this video. I think having large family is good. But not too large. I think women should still of course have options and all opportunities, and that is not possible with huge families. However if this makes them happy then so be it! I also think that after communism, the church really has an opportunity to be for the people. I think right now this house that the priest lives in shows why people were so angry with them before the revolution. I personally think it’s important to have beautiful churches where everyone can come and worship, but I think that the priests should live among the people they serve and live similar to them.

Instead of trying to stop the kids from miss behaving they work with them to channel their behavior issues in to something that could be managed. When I was little I like to explore. Out in the country fine but with in a busy city can be really dangerous. So when we go shopping and she could not keep a 24 hour watch over me she would hand me her purse and tell me that all our money is in it. At which point I would feel so instilled with responsibility that I would not dare move two steps away from here and protected that thing with my life. When we would be going back home she would ask me to help her carry the bags in a very theatric manner that made me feel I was saving the world. I was not old enough to carry a loaf of bread by my self but hanging on to the handles of the bag was enough to make sure that I would not go any where. I loved that woman. On top of this, many women file for divorce and often strip children of their fathers and fathers of their children. this has left many men unwilling to get married and many see it as a dangerous institution all together with no gain for the man at all. with all that said, i am not like this. A small correction: Russia didn't reject the West. Russians thought they became an equal partner to the West when the USSR collapsed. Instead they were treated as losers in the Cold War. Yugoslavia bombing, support of the Chechen separatism, arrogant attitude on behalf of the EU and NATO served Putin a great favor in establishing the "Us against the whole world" rhetoric. The West is reaping its own fruit facing the resurgent nationalistic Russia right now and it is making it worse promoting this image instead of giving more voice to Russian liberals and intellectuals. The worst part is the West doesn't understand this and carries on pushing rusophobia in the western media, further alienating Russian society.

Russia is a multi religious, multi cultural federation state, unlike Muslims in Europe and USA... Muslims on Russia came with their own land and became part of Russia. Russian law is not only for Christian Russians... they try to make a law that will work for everyone

    • @Bebebeuie
      @Bebebeuie 5 років тому +17

The video didn’t explain the law. Domestic violence went down since this law. You can be arrested the first time if there is a mark, if it’s something small you would have to do it twice. I’m not fully into it but I understand it because many couples have a small fight once and it can separate a whole family because the state can take away a child. They did this to give a family a second chance but a wife can still file against a husband if she doesn’t want to be with him but wants to claim children. Also this law put domestic violence under the matter of local police. Before this was more of a state/provincial thing (they don’t have provinces but I’m using this word) while as now, charges can be laid much quicker and dealt with

When you come to Russia, you immediately see how educated and open minded the people are. My first impression was the taxi driver at the airport, who was reading and put aside a book of Dostoyevsky when I came. In the subway, you see people actually reading real books and papers. Young families and children go to museums and to the theatre.

Just a mindset. Looking at their kids as a gift from the God. And they have a lot of older, who take care of the younger ones. How families used to live. All under the same roof, or would build houses next to each other, so they can help one another. West lost that traditional way of living, why kids became a burden for one, two parents, salaries. Instead of investing in house, kids, they need outside help, babysitters, housekeepers ect, so they can work. The reason many are deciding not to have kids at all. It was normal for multiple generations to live together. How people learned not to be selfish, to share, be more tolerant, have hierarchy, head of the family, younger took care of their elderly, elderly homes were not a big thing, kindergartens ect, transferring that way of living onto the outside world, so people had more respect for one another. Now, we are here, lost in complete and total chaos, worshiping ourselves. Not good.

I am Russian and it took me 3 minutes of this video to start crying, even though it seems like I left all those terrors behind the border. The last part is so bittersweet as this wonderful woman is the one to take care of the consequences of the privileged conservators' actions, while they themselves deny any responsibility.

so that guy with the church gets a house for free for basically living in the stoneage, and this wonderful woman who has saved many children by adopting them gets nothing. Great priorities. Church always gets the most and those who actually need always get nothing.

"political-religious regime" last I check, russia isn't establishing any religion to be the state religion of russia.
Just because there's a christian revival in eastern europe it doesn't mean people are being "brainwashed"
heck if people lived by a certain set of principles, does that make them "brainwashed"? I could say that same about you and your dubious choices of subscriptions, especially to the young turks, named after a terror group who perpetuated the genocide of 2 million armenians.
would I call you "brainwashed", no, would I say that in my point of view, you're positions are very simplistic and elementary? yeah.

Difference is that guy is running a huge family. Families are the basic cell of a civilization. And through families cultural values are passed on to the next generation. So family's should be protected to preserve russia as a great nation.

Imagine. In Russia they’re building churches while in Western Europe they’re closing them down and converting them to nightclubs and skate parks.
