🇺🇦 🇷🇺 Why has Ukraine's Orthodox church split from Russia? l Inside Story

  • The eastern Orthodox church has over 250 million members around the world.
Its spiritual leader is based in Istanbul.
But for followers in Ukraine, there's a new found independence.
Churches there have officially cut ties with their Russian branch - accusing it of what they call 'pro-Moscow propaganda'.
The decision has angered Russian leaders, with Moscow warning of what it calls dire consequences.
So, was this a politically motivated decision?

Ukraine's Orthodox Church has not "split with Russia." The Ukrainian Orthodox Church, under the Patriarch of Kiev, is the canonical Church in Ukraine. And Bartholomew is not the "head of Orthodoxy." He is the patriarch of one Church, holding a primacy of honor, not jurisdiction. It has noting to do with Christ or His Church--it is a political move on the part of Bartholomew.

Even the Ukrainians under Moscow’s jurisdiction condemn Putin and Russia for the invasion, but understand that it is not right for the Ukrainian government to declare the canonical church illegal. The government can’t just make a government-approved church. Prairie Viking No it does not work that way. The Ecumenical Patriarch Of Constantinople and New Rome has the sole authority to grant a Tomos Of Autocephaly to any Orthodox Church that requests it of him. This is enshrined in Canon Law both in The First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325 AD as well as in the Fourth Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon. The Russian Patriarchate was never ceded Canonical Jurisdiction of the Metropolia of Kyiv in 1686 by Constantinople ,only the right to ordain The Metropolitan Of Kyiv who in turn would remain under the Canonical Jurisdiction of Constantinople. The Russian Church later usurped this right granted to it by Constantinople by annexing the Ukrainian Church and placing it under the authority of Moscow--now that was uncanonical. Patriarch Bartholomew simply put things right by granting Autocephaly and returning Ukraine to his Jurisdiction, with the request and consent of the Ukrainian people.

The EP is not a Roman Pope, but he is The First Among Equals with privileges and authority that have been preserved and universally accepted within the Church for many centuries through Holy Tradition, Ecumenical Councils, and Canon Law. Even though each national Church is autocephalous, not one of those Churches or Patriarchs can diminish the EP’s inherent and enshrined spiritual authority over the rest of the Church or contest its status as the Mother Church, which has been the cornerstone of the Orthodox Church for centuries. Anyone who disputes this is serving other interests and not the best interests of the Church, and is propagating an act of schism within the Church. If you are perpetuating un canonical lies which seek to undermine the spiritual authority of the EP over the entire Church as Canon Law, Holy Tradition, and the Holy Councils dictate and which the Church has universally accepted for centuries, then you are propagating schism. And if you are doing that, then as a schismatic, may God have mercy on your soul.

Patriarch Bartholomew is one bishop, equal in rank to all other Orthodox Bishops. He is head of his jurisdiction - the patriarchate of Constantinople, not the entire Orthodox Church. This is very important for people to understand so they don't get the wrong ideas. Orthodoxy is lead by the council of Bishops. It is not ruled by one figure like a "pope".

He is NOT the chief or the head of the other various ethnic Orthodox Churches which have their own senior bishops. Historically, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was under Constantinople. The Ukrainians want to be free of Putin, and who doesn't? When Stalin came to power, he was especially vicious to the Ukrainian Orthodox. He murdered all their bishops so there was no one to ordain clergy. They suffered further under the Nazis. I'm glad to see stability restored to the Ukraine. Kyrill can go soak his head.

So many Orthodox Churches I'm confused. Some Orthodox are with Rome the Byzantine Church and Some Ukrainian are with Rome.
The first Orthodox Church was Greek The first Bible was in Greek.
Peter (Simon Bar Jonas) Mark Andrew and some more were Jews The brothers James and John were Greek. Jesus picks up on Jews first as God He has commenced with Jews He then incorporates Gentiles, Greeks but the Roman Empire was ruling and are very much involved.

In the Church I pray where unity is unity and faith, believing, no one is ashamed of one another, in the true faith or in believing. These things seem to be happening in other places too. Christ Jesus is the one and only Christ and one and only one body amidst the Christian faith. Divisions are very difficult. There are many interpretations, or branches of the christoan faith but Christ Jesus is the foundation. It is a prayer the one foundation is a unifying aspect of the faith in Christ Jesus. Even with different aspects of the faith, each one has their gift in the spirit and faith but together are the faith the Christianity. Or are my thoughts. The faith is the healing of all things, in and through Christ Jesus, aside from the world and what is in it. Different churches ok. Different spiritual gifts and messages, But ultimately unified in one foundation, the faith, that is in Christ Jesus,, God's only begotten son by way of immaculate conception. John 3:16. In my opinion and if I may be so bold to speak my opinion with all due respect.

Jesus The Christ, The empowered prophet Deut.18v18-19 ... He IS THE LIVING WORD OF GOD Jn.1v1+....
... IF WE DO NOT BELieVE THE PROVEN WORD OF GOD as It is written Jn.18v37, Jn. Jn 12v48
then such a person DOES NOT BELIEVE IN JESUS Jn. 12v48... JESUS SAYS Matt.7v20... TRUE FAITH IS NOT JUST A VERBAL ASCENT THAT JESUS HAS PAID FOR MY SINS.
Jesus says " UNLESS YOU ( NOT ONLY) EAT of My BODY { THAT PAID FOR YOUR ENEMY's sins ALSO}, (BUT ALSO), & DRINK OF MY BLOOD, YOU HAVE NO LIFE ON YOU".
Clearly, you need to believe what Jesus says.
" This is the cup of the new covenant in my bood".
UNLESS YOU RECEIVE THE LORD's meaning of His New Covenant, you are believing erroniously, & not letting Him teach you, as also did not Adam, & all those who rejected the Testimony of NOAH, & OF GOD.

I agree. I don't think the Orthodox Church in Ukraine and the Kyiv Patriarchate are schismatic Churches of Orthodoxy, as an Orthodox myself who's part of the Ukrainian Church USA under Bartholomew. They're only labelled as "schismatics" by the ROC because Putin said to do it as a fear tactic towards believers in those two Churches. Putin, the FSB, and Kirill run the ROC together, with majority of its bishops and priests being big Putin sympathisers as well.
The Ukrainian Churches just wants to be independent from communist control, which Russia oppose. The only reason why other Orthodox Churches like Belarus, Poland, Serbia, Antiochian, etc didn't say they recognise the Ukrainian Churches is because they don't want to get labelled as "schismatics" themselves by the Russians. If the Ukrainian Churches are to be in communion with Russia, it would mean Putin will use the ROC to try to control the minds of Ukrainians, so that's why the UOC wants autocephaly and recognition

The Archbishop of Constantinople is the Ecumenical Patriarch, or First among Equals of all the Primates. He is the Head and Leader of the Primates, just as Peter was Coryphaeus of the Apostles
As Archbishop of Constantinople his jurisdiction is limited to the city of Constantinople [Istanbul]. But as Ecumenical Patriarch he is the Representative of his brother Primates and represent all of them in ruling over the Diaspora
Should the Church of Constantinople somehow disappear tomorrow, it is the Archbishop of Alexandria that will take over and become First and Ecumenical Patriarch of the Orthodox Church. Antioch is after Alexandria, and Jerusalem is after Antioch
Moscow is transgressing and overstepping boundaries and Ecumenically-ratified Order of Priorities. As Metropolitan of Moscow, his jurisdiction is limited to the city of Moscow, and as Patriarch of Russia his jurisdiction is limited to un-bishoped regions inside the canonical territory of the Church of Russia, as delienated in her Tomos of Autocephaly, which she requested for from and received from the Ecumenical Patriarch in late 16th century

After the patriarch was formed in Russia, then the jurisdiction was given to Russia.
If you say Constantinople has jurisdictional rights over Russia. Then Rome has jurisdictional rights over Constantinople.
The fact is when a patriarch is formed it is made one among equals.
Your point would be valid if the highest rank was archbishop of Russia but thats not the case.

But the Ecumenical Patriarch, currently held by the Bishop of Constantinople, has the prerogative to represent all Primates, and thus to hold jurisdiction over the diaspora
There is canonical order and taxis in the Church. Should someday Constantinople be gone, the Bishop of Alexandria will assume Ecumenical Patriarchate and become Universal Primate, and as such hold jurisdiction over the diaspora and the prerogative of representing all Primates
