Note : Roger played almost exactly the same configuration during 2008 'Cosmos Rocks' tour(minus the gong at the back), so I think this is a very accurate recreation. I LOVE IT! :)
I think the just have the gong sitting there in case they ever need to use it, it’s in most of the videos.
@@pendhd649 I see... Thx!
But not on snare sounds .. live is something huge, powerfull. BTW, as Queen is known as a great great live band, i always remember live sounds instead of the albums.
@@YeahNego he also tuned his snare many times a show, it was common for him to change the tuning of his snare between songs.
You're right. Roger, over and out!
I love how you mimicked the video effects in the Bohemian Rhapsody video! That was cool.
I always loved his use of the hi-hat to accent the snare
I never realized that until now! He's slightly opening the hi-hat for every snare hit! Of course I heard it, but it never hit me!
YES!! That is one of his unique techniques I love and tend to copy it when I’m playing. I’m glad others notice that little detail of his playing.
One technique I like that comes from Roger is that, while hitting it and keeping it on beat, he slowly opens his hi hat and then on the snare hit, he closes it at the same time.
Yes! Very unique, and you have to practice it! At least I did… But I‘ve also seen Alex Van Halen do it.
99% of drummers miss this when doing Queen and it makes such a big difference! It’s the same with the way Brian May rests his hand on the bridge to ever so slightly mute the strings, another subtle but integral part to the overall Queen sound.
How Queen tribute band drummers completely miss Roger's trademarks, lke the one you mention here, is criminal imo. Its an integral part of the overall playing of Queen songs. Miss them and they just become a pub band playing Queen, not a tribute imo.
2:02 That transition was absolutely perfect.
My FAVORITE song by Queen to this day is "Dragon Attack" and it is criminally underrated. The drum solo alone in that makes me smile, but EVERYONE gets a solo in that one. Lol. Why don't more people play it?! Anyway thanks for posting. This was a great video.
I can’t wrap my head around how close you get with your sounds every time. Awesome!
To match Roger, don’t forget to have a set of RotoToms and also an enormous gong behind the set. And don’t forget the set of timpani (kettle) drums… and to be amazing.
That snare sound is brilliant. So warm and punchy.
Roger is my favorite drummer!!!...Great job!!!!
I Really Love Roger Taylor's Drum Kit
So now I watched the full video and it ist- A masterwork! Thank you for making this!
WAAA I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR AGES!!! THANK YOU!!!! I LOVE YOUR SERIES GUYS
Wonderful ! Very accurate . Thank you
I remember seeing Queen in mid '76 at the Santa Monica Civic, Roger's drum sound was over the top loud! Made me happy that I've been a Ludwig drumer since 1965, the PDP's sound very good as well. Nice work.
Roger always used 15 inch new beats hi hats the only way to get his older sound is with Ludwig drums with big Tom’s IMO
This is the guy who got me into drums 30 years ago. Very glad you covered him and covered him and the engineers behind so well, a big well done. You did ask "what did you think", I think 99% its there - Roger's snare is a tiny bit tighter I hear, or uses less rim. But overall, I am not sure if Roger could have created Roger's Sound this good. Well done Sirs!
Fantastic editing work. Brilliantly done!!!
I came here to wish Roger a very happy Birthday 🎂
The magic words are: TAPE MACHINE BIAS
Yes!! Thank you!!
These are fantastic!! Looking forward to the next one :D
Love the video effects
Just amazing! You guys always rock it!
I've been waiting this recreation of the drumset of the queen thankyouu ♥️
Rogers most natural drum sound you'll find on 'The Game and 'The Works'. But i love how the rack toms sound on 'sheers heart attack'. His best snare sound i think is probably 'Innuendo' all imo.
I love his sound on The Game!
his snare in the miracle and innuendo sound dark, fat and huge in the soudstage, it was just insane
@@johnsoos6907 you hear Roger's feel particularly on 'The Game' i think. You get it on other albums of course, but there's something about how his kit is recorded on 'The Game'/'The Works' that isn't there on other albums i think. The sound of his kit on 'Jazz' i think is poor. I think Roger was let down on that album.
@@luizansounds i'm not a fan of 'the miracle' drum sound to be honest. I really want them to remix the title track, taking out all the keyboards/synths and replacing them with just piano, and then re-record the drum track so the kit sounds more authentic like the drums on 'the game' for example. I think the drums on 'the miracle' at times sound part aunthentic drum kit and part processed or triggered samples over the top so a blend of programmed and authentic/actually played. For trying to sound modern at the time, i think they created an album that now sounds more dated than 'the works'. But thats me lol!
@@MrWaynePage Mack produced both of those albums. He gets great drum sounds. If you listen to Mick Tucker's sound on Sweet's "Give Us A Wink", or the drum sound on Billy Squire's "Don't Say No" there is a common thread. Roy Thomas Baker did "Jazz". One thing I can tell you about how they recorded drums on "The Game" is; they recorded without crash cymbals, on some of the tracks. Same with drum fills. They added them, afterwards. You can find some of these raw tracks on UA-cam.
The work you put into your video is absolutely insane
Wow I actually requested this and you guys made it! Thanks !!
YOOOOO THANK YOU
Yes. i love this so much! will defo be using as a guide for my own kit!
I was waiting for this moment my whole life
me too
Sounded pretty damn close to me. Good job.
This is awesome!
Thank you for thiss AOD! High quality content, we will always support ur channel!
the drums on Ogre Battle are stellar
Another quality video and then you top it off with some tastes and effects from the original Bohemian video clip. Hats off guys
This was a great recreation guys!
10:40 🤣🤣🤣 didn’t see that coming. Cool 👍
Simplemente sublime
This drum set up is so cool, bet you felt one with this sitting behind the kit. It’s amazing how different set ups give us different inspirations on how to approach our beautiful instrument. I think it’s a good thing to explore these different configurations. Good video as always bro 🤘
Editing spot on 👌🏼
NAILED IT! (as always hahaha you never disappoint)
I was lucky to see them live in 1985 they sounded great , they had a huge PA system
Fantastic as always 👌🏼
Well done, Art Of Drumming. I really like this drum kit.
Again, very well done !
Fantastic video very detailed and I think you got as close with the modern equivalents as anyone could expect to do.
Finally! My wish was fulfilled, i've been asking for this for a long time. Thank you!
One of my favorite Roger Taylor drum sounds is on A Day At The Races. Specifically, his tom sound on the track "White Man".
OH YEA!
I'm with ya. The toms sound quite flat on 'white man' i think (very tribal), but the drums on this track definitly influenced Lars Ulrich of Metallica imo.
Great work, gentlemen! We love you Pascal!!!
What a tribute!! That recreation was AWESOME!!
I can not stress this enough: Your content is sooo good!
I love the level of detail! Everything is explained but not overly complicated nor lost in details: "[...] medium high pitch, > one hit on the tom [...]" - That's it, job done, awesome!
I really hope you have at least as much fun in producing these vids as I have when watching!
I’ve always liked his sound from their Jazz album. ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ is a great example esp as it has that epic fill just before that last chorus, including his timbales.
It's so underrated
*Rototoms*
Funny! To me, „Jazz“ has the worst drum sound!
@@steffenhaas the Jazz drum set sound is the most incredible for me 😀 so funny we have the extremely opposite opinion 😅 hugs my friend
The Jazz album IS together with the debut album the album with the worst production. The drums sound unnatural, the guitars shrill and the vocals are swamped in the mix. Some songs switch from stereo to mono. I only noticed how horrible the album sounds when I listened to NOTW and than immediately listened to Jazz. It's a shame because I found the album pretty good myself
It is hard to get that "one specific" Roger Taylor Drumsound, as Queen really pushed the limits of production technology in the 70s and 80s and did experiment a lot.
never the less, you did a good job getting pretty close
Pretty close! My favourite Video so far. For me Roger wasn't a heavy hitter. He played with a lighter touch butexactly that makes his sound so big. Very inspiring!!
Nice! That was really cool and fun to watch. Great job guys!😎
wow, I can't believe he played a 26"! I never would have guessed that!
Great job guys! My favorite drum sound is on You're My Best Friend.
Great work! Perhaps a bonus video on his drum sound from Live Aid?😁🤘
It would be interesting to see his drum configuration from the 1981 live Montreal show.
Well then get the book "The drums of Roger Medows Taylor" by Dario Blues Dinario, awesome it contains all the Sets he played. I own it, and belive me, as one of the biggest Rogie Fans and as dummer it gave several answers to me😊😊!!
@@michaelklinik1969 Nah can't be bothered
@@michaelklinik1969 where did you get this book? I can’t find it for sale anywhere.
@@inonotusmusic2050 well look for it on UA-cam i bought it directlie from the author Dario Blues Dinario in Italy but i am not shure if he has any books left
Sounds really great but I think the floor toms were an 18" and a 20". some one on you tube has a recreation of Roger's black Ludwig set and I think that's what was used. Also if you listen to the part of the song where it says "never let me go" the last hit each time sounds more like a floor tom/bass drum so that's why I think it was a 18" and 20"floor tom. Still with said the sound and playing were awesome!!!! Thanks
My god i've been waiting this since i First saw the series, thank you so much
nice video, roger is my favourite drummer ❤
great video. awesome sound capturing and also cool video effects for Bohemian, just like in the original video LOL
As usual, excellent work here guys!!!! And the video effects too, great stuff. I keep thinking of the tom sound on 'My Best Friend' track, sounded so massive! Again, great work here.
Not only you nalied it… the video totally cracked me up! Kudos!!!!
100% superb job. The playing, the drum sound, and the audio. Once again you guys have outdone yourselves..👍👍
Queen in the 70's: Look, ma! NO SYNTHS!
Queen in the 80's: Ah well, nevermind...
BTW: Roger is such a great drummer. And His son kills it in The Darkness as well!
You cannot perform the same trick over and over again.
@@buckmurdock2025 Unless you're AC fckn' DC.
👑👑👑👑drum sound of Killer Queen is one of my favorites 💕🌟❤️🔥I love Roger Taylor
8:54 - This was my muffling technique of choice when I played a full acoustic.
Damn you nailed the toms pretty perfectly
FINALLY!
Great channel guys!! Thanks for sharing …viele Grüße aus Frankfurt
Was privileged to see them in ‘75, and again in ‘86
Loved the drum rigs on Q2, Night at the Opera, Day at the Races and Jazz
Best drum sounds therefore-
Loser in the End/ Father to Son
The Prophets Song/ Good Company
Long Away/ Drowse
Dead on Time:/ Don’t Stop Me Now
For what It's worth.
I have been digging Queen for 48 years. The most important and distinctive part of Taylor's sound is never addressed in this video.
His timing. He lays back. Plays slightly behind the beat.
Bohemian Rhapsody had piano first! The drums (and everything else) added later.
He is playing to Fred's piano track. He skillfully lays his Tempo back.
Taylor/Queen had their very own Tempo. Often it would float around. That sounds like something a bad band (or drummer) would do. But it was incredible when Queen 'floated' the Tempo around.
I enjoy the early albums, and I think Queen ll is the masterpiece of all thier work.
To sound like Roger, study and practice his unique sense of Tempo. It will serve better than matching his drum sound.....but the sound will make it even better!
Thanks for this video! He doesn't get enough credit.
Your explanation is extraordinary, I hope you I can talk to you face to face about that
Great video editing effects on "galileo" 👏🏼😄🥁🎶
This would be such a blast putting all these different configurations together. Anywhere from the minimal silk sonic one to the crazy larger ones. And then all the different ways you get to tune them
Me gusta mucho el sonido de la bateria en "The night comes down". Great video!
Your missing one thing Roger would turn his left and stick over to create more attack. Playing with the butt end. You Almost got it...:)
On the “Bismillah! We will not let you go” section there are also timpani’s.
Sounds sick
Do Neil Peart - Tom Sawyer
Please make a vídeo about jazz drummers , Max Roach , Pilly Joe Jones or Joe Morello could be awesome!!
The open hi/hat in combination with the snare hit is Rogers trademark
Exactly. He varies it too. On' Sail Away Sweet Sister', it is very sloshy. You can clearly hear him accenting the 2 and 4. It is a very unique style and is totally RT. I love when he also mixes 6th and 16th notes on the hi-hat. Roger has a great solid feel!
Oh yeahh, really love this one !
Oh wow! Absolutely an amazing video as always. You guys recreated the sound perfectly! Personally my favorite sound is on the Jazz album. Great video as always!!
This is brilliant.. Roger is my favourite drummer and I love the sound of those toms. I remember and interview with Brian May where he said Roger hated muffling his drums and much preferred that big open sound.
Sounded so good loved the silloeto of a man part. With the drummers silloet. Priceless
The Opera and Races drum sounds are amazing. On Jazz it sounds so compressed lmao
Keep yourself alive amazing drumming and sound Love Roger Taylor
YESSSSSSSS THANKKKYOUUUUH
Do nil peart drum sund plz
Do djent drum sound, please.
Sounds awesome IMHO.
This might be the perfect roger taylor from queen drum sound recreation
Another great AOD video! Pascal does a great job of recreating famous drum tracks! Thank you for this! I'd love to hear an Alex Van Halen recreation! Many people have tried to recreate it, including Rick Beato, but most have failed.
Yes, agreed. Because the most important thing about Alex Van Halen's drum sound is Alex Van Halen.
Tame Impala drum sound? That’d be so 😎
Let's goooo! Been looking forward to this one
pls recreate drum sounds of Deep Purple! Machine head era!
Please, Muse drum sound next!
You're great! I'm A a huge fan of Roger, is my inspiration for play drums! The best sound forme it's form that album , A night at the opera and latest albums, like a miracle! Thanks for reacreat that sound!!!
Nice video. I am a massive fan of Roger Taylor. For me, Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack, A NIght at the Opera and A Day at the Races have some of the best drum sounds ever in rock. A fat natural sound. Roger tuned his toms very melodically to a pure note, with the reso heads a minor 3rd higher than the batter to get maximum resonance. His style and sound is iconic. He is totally unique!
The snare isn't loud enough for me on 'Queen 2', but it is my favourite album of all time still.I think the drum sound on SHA is far better than ANATO, far more natural sounding and better balanced. The drum kit on ADATR is too complicated imo, but has some of his best momets for sure. Defo unique
Drowse or Loser in the End- very deep sounds- please try to recreate those!
