He learned from one of the masters of the drums , Benny Benjamin of The Funk Brothers from Motown Records! He definitely had his own technique and he was a great player and played for the song ! Thanks for doing this video, good job!!!!!
You can hear the influence of all the old Motown session masters on Stevie, even in the chords and structures of his songs and in his love for Jazz harmony which comes thru in his music
The irony of recreating Stevie's drum sound is that he performed the drums and hi hats separately, in order to be able to eq those elements independently. He also played the hi hats loudly with two hands. You did a good job of keeping that kind of sloppy hi hat/cymbal approach while performing it all as one piece.
Many years ago in an interview, Stevie Wonder explained the reason for the hi-hat pattern. He said it was patterned after a children's nursery rhyme about (you guessed it) superstition. This is one of the reasons the pattern is so familiar and fits so well. Excellent video.
This channel is crazy good! Everything is of such quality that is hard to put into words. Thank you so much for doing this and congratulations for such amazing work!
Good stuff guys Ive played drums for years and Stevie is on of my favs, so messy, idiosyncratic and full of feel, check out his playing on "Misstra Know it all" and 'I love every little thing about you" and "Evil" - his drum parts are so....Stevie!?
@@RobertMargouleff That’s what I thought! Many many years ago I was doing some (drum) sessions with Malcolm Cecil in England and he always used a copy master of Superstition as a key part of testing out a studio control room he wasn’t familiar with. The engineers were always impressed!
This series is new to me, but i'm already in love! I love the nerd-level, and the effort to make it just right. But i also LOVE the drumming of Pascal. Very precise and well played, without overdoing things in the UA-cam way, with overcomplicated fills and attitude. SO well played and a bit understated. And as a photographer myself, i also like that even the setting, lighting and filming is also set to match the style of the music and performer. Thanks guys!
Amazing take Pascal on Stevie Wonder's drum sound. Great to here that the samples of these drum recreate videos will be available soon. I will downloading the multi verlocity wav samples and loading them into my 2Box drumit ekit. When you have a large bank of samples I would love to see Pascal play a medley of songs with a 2Box kit with all your samples loaded into the SD card
How about you do a video about Al Jackson Jr. From STAX Records? He played on alot of hit records from the likes of Otis Redding, Sam And Dave, Booker T And The M.G.s , and of course Al Green! Thanks for sharing these informative videos! Keep up the good beats and work!😁🎼🤘🏾
A suggestion for the recreation series: can you do Dowoon of Day6? He’s the drummer of probably Korea’s most famous ‘idol band’ and I’d be really interested to see his sound recreated for a kinda modern pop context
I feel bad as a visually impaired drummer not knowing Stevie Wonder played the drums Learned something today and got some inspiration Rather more inspiration
Nice one. As always. :D I wonder why you guys don't have 5 million subs... You should do a recreating of the Come Around Sundown album sound - for me one of the best!
'I wonder why you guys don't have 5 million subs'. It's because people don't appreciate actual talent anymore. I occasionally shut my eyes and don't hear the difference between these videos and the original. Its ridiculous how close these guys get. Keep it up guys.
love these videos, the recreations are so precise could you do a video about alex van halens drum sound, his snare sound was absolutly amazing and the kits he played always looked extraordinary
Love this series! Could you possibly do Carter Beauford as a special episode since I know he plays a massive kit don’t know how feasible it would be for you guys but I would love to see it
Thank you for all the awesome videos. First thing I get to watch with my coffee ☕️. This was a joy and you play very well. I must ask when doing these videos do you write ✍️ out all your own sheet music, I just notice you study each drummer to a T and not over play. Well done 👍
Thanks! I usually learn the songs by listening to them and the isolated drum tracks over and over until I know them by heart. Sometimes that’s actually all I do before we start filming.
Two of the best drummers ever (in my opinion) are not so known for playing the drums. Stevie is one, and the other is Lenny Kravitz. He’s the one playing on his most groovy songs 👌🏻
The super important sound in Higher Ground is the hi hat opening. I missed that during the verse. The sounds are really good though. Good mixing and engineering.
I'm more than amazed by the quality of your content. Politely would like to ask for the drum sound of one of mine's favorites: GONG, specially for the song: Master Builder. Hopefully you may get interested. Best Regards.
Great video! Can you do a tutorial on “The Revolution will not be Televised” byGil Scott-Heron/Bernard “Pretty” Purdie or the song “Vitamin C” by the band “Can”? Thank you!
It is very difficult to play Superstition, since time does not fit into the grid. There is a time push in the bridge that is difficult to catch the first time.

Wow, I never knew that.
Nope. From a comment in this very video:

No always part of the kit
I literally dropped my jaw when you played the snare for the first time. You nailed the Superstition sound
Amazing drum cover. Really cool how you guys get these kits to sound almost identical to the recording. Very nice job!

Really great! I love the relaxed way Pascal plays the grooves, maximizing sound and feel over technical perfection.
But lets remember he still has technical perfection
@@contatotaiveroto6017 Absolutely!

I wish Stevie would play drums when he performs live.
Love this series, you're doing a great job in recreating iconic drums sound.
Thank you for uploading. Hope many people remember SW as one of great drummers of all time
Luv the grooves from Stevie Wonder, this was very informative video! Also like the Drum Kits. The Drummer was playing on time.
Dang!!! Can’t believe y’all released this one! I remember mentioning Superstition in your drum intros video, nailed it!
I’m happy to hear these. I recorded this one too. Well done😎
Wow!! What an achievement!!!
Hi Robert Did Stevie really record the hi-hats separately as per a previous comment?

“Let’s take a LOOK at what makes him so unique.”
Why did I chuckle????
I really like Stevie's hit-and-miss approach to the drums.
beautiful job. great sounds and playing. Stevie is a musical genius, for sure
Pascal nails it! Really nice playing and great drum sound and recording. Well done guys.
Why am I watching this. I don’t even play drums but I can’t get enough of it
His shuffles are hypnotic
Sounds great! I'd be interested in seeing a Ginger Baker drum sound video.

Yes!! Thank you guys!!
Well, never knew before Stevie could play drum. Guess I learn something new everyday :) :D
Crazy what you guys did with the lighting here to make the kit go from blue to sorta greenish
Love it play drums in the dark with a blind fol on and see the light from the soul like Stevie

How you guys nail every single drum sound is no small accomplishment...
Great job. Drums sound great and your playing is on it.
Finally, Stevie is my favorite drummer, you done a great job, thnx
I’ll tell u what i think: it made me smile hearing u recreating those classic grooves. Now u gotta try JB drum licks! Ha.
I feel bad as a visually impaired drummer not knowing Stevie Wonder played the drums

Great to hear that!
Inspiration might be the most important thing when it comes to growing as a musician. Glad you got some out of our video!

I love that you're brand neutral, it doesn't matter Yamaha, pearl, etc. But the sound you get out of it. 🙌💯
You're just fantastic Pascal! Love your content.
I love Stevie Wonder. I love his drumming. Can you recreate the drum sounds of I Wish? God I really have to get back to me drumming.
If you watch the Classic Albums documentary they did on Songs In The Key of Life, you can see clips of Stevie drumming in the studio to this track.
One world : AMAZING thank you for these contents 🙌
You guys nail the sound every time!
I would like to see you do Stevie's "Another Star " drums. Its amazing!
I listen to Superstition and Higher Ground all the time, and the snare on this one sounds exactly like the original. Heck the entire kit sounds right.
love these videos, the recreations are so precise could you do a video about alex van halens drum sound, his snare sound was absolutly amazing and the kits he played always looked extraordinary

Very nice!
Job well done. I would love to try recreating this on my MPC.
Brilliant, guys. 👏
Love your videos...done to the Max.
Nice work on this video! Almost nailed it completely. Stevie is a fuckin’ genius.
Nice video, thanks! Can you Do Zigaboo Modeliste, from the early albums (Cissy strut etc). Levon helm (king harvest would also be interesting!:))
While writing superstition Jeff Beck was jamming on drums and Stevie told him to keep playing to make the riff.
I was looking for this comment.

I've heard a lot of reports that Stevie isn't actually "in the dark" and that he can see - but only barely. Interesting.
Nicely done lads. I recorded the original btw💥👍
Thanks a lot! :)
And thanks for the amazing original !!!
I would love to meet Stevie. Even better would be to jam with the legend. 🤘
I'd be fascinated by a video on Kevin Parker drum sounds. This was a fantastic video though.

increíble! Felicitaciones!!
You can tell by the feel that Stevie plays three finger dominant instead of palm dominant.
Nice job!!!
This is why I held onto my 68' aluminum acrolite.
Classic sound
Que obra maestra …what a masterpiece

The tambourine plays a major role in the Higher Ground original recording

This might be the closest replica yet.

You must do some of bill ward of black sabbath 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Can't wait for Scott Rockenfield next!
Great video any chance of some Mitch Mitchell examples ?
Please do sound like Alan White from oasis ! Especially the Morning Glory album. I think it was a Rogers kit and all Sabian HH Cymbals.
Can you do ginger baker or mitch mitchell
you missed the tambourine on the hihat on higher ground
On "Higher Ground" Stevie placed a tambourine on the hi-hat...
I thought the drum groove on Superstition was originally created by Jeff Beck. Why no mention of him?
ziggy modeliste (the meters) would be a great episode too
Superstition was recorded with only 3 mics. Kick, Snare, mono OH.
id be super interested in a metal church video first album the song beyond the black
I would really appreciate the drum samples from the kits you've done, especially Joey Jordison!!
It is very difficult to play Superstition, since time does not fit into the grid. There is a time push in the bridge that is difficult to catch the first time.
Jeff Beck is actually credited with coming up with this drum beat....
I'd like to see Keith Moon's drumming on 'Anyway , Anyhow , Anywhere ' replicated ....
Nice video! Please, make a Dave Abbruzzese drum sound!!!
Wonder how it sounds...
Can you do a tony williams or elvin jones drum setup in the 80s or 90s?
is pretty good how he can play the drums blined
I'd like to see Charlie Watt's drum sound on 'Monkey Man' reproduced , please ....
jeff beck played the drums on superstition
