The best part is that in 6:25 you can see the Mermaid actually gave her blessing but Kratos asked Brok for his blessing anyway to make him feel good. Kratos went through so much character development. This game is a blessing.
Her silent approval. She DID make a weapon for a Spartan turned God. Mostly for a Spartan tho. She seemed to like the Lambda symbol better then the Omega symbol. 😅
I love how she rejects the first symbol representing the end (both which Kratos have brought to others and is about to himself), "war" (his status/experiences as a god of war; and ares, his enslaver), the source of all his misery and shame, and instead chooses the symbol which goes to his core identity as a spartan warrior before everything went to shit. Which is especially fitting as it takes a form of a spear. His first weapon, the quintessential weapon of every spartan warrior.
What I like most about Draupnir is that it’s symbolic of both past and present Kratos. The Blades of Chaos were from the Greek world, and the Leviathan Axe from the Nordic one. Draupnir is a Nordic artifact empowered by the blood of a Greek god, a weapon spanning two worlds. The spear is the first weapon Kratos got, and it’s also the last.
Whomever designed this mermaid should be rewarded. There's just something about her that says she is beautiful and that she should be respected. Her smile and happy sigh when she forges the spear just... there are no words. ☺
“It is the nature of a thing that matters, not its form” Damn, hearing that from someone like Kratos is really something. It gives hope that anyone can change. That anyone can do better.
This is one of the best pieces of writing in a very, very long time. Draupnir is in the myths as the replicating ring. To turn it into a spear consistent with the magic of ring made me smile from ear to ear. It was a special moment and made perfect sense.
I got such nostalgia when Kratos got the spear. I immediately remembered Deimos and Kratos' childhood in Sparta. This moment for me is as strong as the appearance of the blades of chaos from the last part.
3 rings for the elven kings, under the sky. 7 for the dwarf lords, in their halls of stone. 9 for mortal men, doomed to die, one for the dark lord, one his dark throne.
Tolkien was after all inspired by norse mythology. Draupnir - the One Ring Fafnir - Smaug Odin in mortal visage - Gandalf Midgard - Middle Earth Åsgard - Valinor Ægir - Ulmo Freya + Idunn - Yavanna Thor and Sif - Tulkas and Nessa Loki - Morgoth and Sauron And then you have the races of elves(specifically lightelves), dwarves and trolls which are also from the mythology
Here's a little known fact. In ancient Sparta, Spartan warriors would slam their spear like Kratos did to Brok, whenever they were addressing a superior to get their attention. Kratos doing that for Brok really shows just how much he respects him, now only as one of the best blacksmiths in the world, but as a person and a friend. That was a very nice little touch, although it could've been accidental. I'd like to believe it was on purpose though, just like when Kratos cut the apple Sindri threw at him in half.
The memories this spear brought back of the arms of Sparta from Ghost of Sparta was immaculate, I so wanted them to be back and they actually are! S tier job Santa Monica .. S freaking tier
Kratos getting a Spartan spear made for him legit had me running around my room screaming. That whole cutscene is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Once I got good with the spear and upgraded it, it’s the only weapon I ever wanted to use. It’s kinda broken honestly 😂
A Spartan God of War getting a divine spear forged from Draupnir. Yeah, it'd be weird if it WASN'T broken. I bet Kratos prefers using it too, since it's the first weapon that's HIS. On top of that, imagine how oddly comforting it'd be to a warrior that he could keep his weapon on his person at all times without it getting in the way, and he can summon it INSTANTLY. The Axe comes close with the ability to call it to his hand, but it could still get separated from him, like in that fight with Thor. As long as nobody cuts off that finger with the ring, or somehow pulls it off, he's always ready for combat. Honestly, I rather wish that the last mural that Kratos finds that has him as a god of peace, showed him with the spear instead of the axe.
It's quite possible that this lady mermaid were also the one (or member of the mermaid race) who gives King Arthur his sword. The parallels here is that both the weapons were made for the one who were righteous or worthy to wield it. Also the symbol that the blood made changes from Kratos' Omega (End, Last) which symbolizes his destructive nature changes to the Spartan Lambda, which shows his changing nature from cruel God of destruction to the staunch protector of the ones he loved.
It is the nature of a thing that matters, not it’s form. May this weapon strike true. May it be wielded with wisdom. May it be put down when its job is one.
I really thought I was going to do some underwater battle and got really excited because Kratos kills anything in his way :). But I am still happy because the amount of cool characters in this game is just too good to be true. It almost feels like a Guillermo del Toro movie.
I love how mimir doesn’t get the nature and form stuff, and maybe Kratos does, but he doesn’t let on, or he’s just silently confused too. And it’s when brok hits his lowest point, that Kratos uses his own wisdom to lift him back up a little. I love how they made Kratos so… healthy? No. He’s not healthy. But by fuck he’s TRYING. He is a traumatised person riddled with more guilt than anyone could imagine, and the first game (new ones that is) done a wonderful job of showing he’s better, his rage has lessened and he’s trying to do better but he’s not there he’s just not good at it. But he WORKS at it, he tries his fucking hardest, for his son, his wife, himself, the friends he made. Kratos in the originals was the epitome of toxic masculinity, he was so enraged he could never accept any iota of blame for his own actions and externalised it all on those around him. But now he’s healthy, he’s worked on himself to be better, and to all the guys out here, here’s the important bit okay? Never be afraid to be vulnerable, don’t think mental health is a joke, therapy is a good idea for those who need the help, a strong man is a man who can admit his mistakes, who shows love not just to family but friends, who can grow and change and be the better you. Society tells us to keep it all in lads, fuck that, scream, shout cry, let it out, so it stays out. I’m not saying go break some drywalls Kyle, I’m saying go shout into a pillow, cry on a friends shoulder, and once it’s out, let it stay out. Get up and move past it so it can’t come back. If the ghost of Sparta can do it why the fuck can’t you? You got this
Man i agree, and the new Valhalla DLC is basically a huge therapy session for Kratos where he learns to accept himself and his past mistakes to go forward. They truly did a great job to show us that even what most consider a "Monster" still deserve a chance to be happy and forgiven
Considering the lady of the forge sees the soul rather than the corporeal form, she probably made the weapon a spear specifically for kratos after reading his soul.
This is my favorite scene in all God of War series this is like Movie class LOTR fantasy execution and Brok is my favorite character in all God of War series he is the smartest in the group while Sindri is the witty one.
Brok died when he and Sindri were forging the Axe, Sindri couldn't handle it so he went to the lake of souls to retrieve Brok's soul and put it back, however Brok is not fully revived, he is an undead with a part of his soul missing.
Fun Fact : The Gungnir is the true name of this spear in myth , it means "The spear which may never missed " , it was odin`s weapon , odin wield a spear in game too , but I would rather believe this one is the true gungnir , however it was blessed by the greatest Dwarf forger ...
Small detail at 5:15 notice when Kratos’ blood transforms into the Greek symbol for war the lady looks confused most likely because she’s looking at a symbol that she hasn’t seen before
Draupnir is also a ring in the game, Brok and Sindri got it back from Odin after deciding that he didn't deserve it. They give it to Kratos so that mermaid can forge it into a weapon, since the fact that the ring multiplies means that the spear does as well. They need it to multiply because Heimdall can foresee any move, so the only way to defeat him is by having infinite moves.
But the Shield is VERY IMPORTANT. You lose your spear you’re mocked and teased. Lose your shield you are yelled at and a disgrace. The shield protects you, the person behind you, and thr ones beside you
The forge is more than it seems. Observe the periphery as you enter the submersion dome... you’re traveling to the bottom of the crater lake of a dormant/extinct volcano.
I like how Kratos' blood briefly takes the form of the letters Omega and Lambda before the Lady turns it into the cloth. It's what Kratos and most others think he is (a signifier and bringer of the end) and what he is at his heart (a warrior sworn to protect those closest to him).
I just noticed that when the Lady forms the Omega symbol with Kratos' blood initially she furrows her brow as if feeling it's not right and tries again and ends up with the Lambda symbol and finds it much better fitting.
I love how nice Kratos was with Brok. Few esconde after Brok realizes he is dead, Kratos ask him to bless his new weapon. It shows how much Kratos chaged for the better since the events of greece.
If it wasn't for how iconic the blades of chaos have always been for Kratos/how marketable they are, I could legit believe the spear would be Kratos' main weapon from here on out as the one weapon he truly feels comfortable and happy using above all else.
I love that Brok shows such reverence to the Lady, but when she ignores him and learns the truth, he dismisses her as a mere aquatic fish when he said she went back to the kelp.
So the first time Brok died: at the forge, Sindri went to Alfheim and collected his fragmented souls, but unfortunately Sindri only managed to collect several parts of Brok's souls, hence Brok became "incomplete"
"May this weapon strike true May it be wielded with wisdom May it be put down when its job is done" Brok's blessing not only applied to the spear but also to himself. He gave Kratos one of the strongest weapon that can even helped him defeat Heimdall. His riddle gave the smartest man alive a headache. And after he uncovered Odin's disguise.... His job is done.
I THINK THAT MIMIR KNEW THE ANSWER OF THE RIDDLE BEFORE BUT HE LIKED TO SEE BROK HAPPY BECAUSE HE THOUGHT THAT MIMIR DID NOT KNOW AND RIDDLE AND THANKS TO HIM, KRATOS WAS HAPPY WITH THE SPEAR
I realized only now. sindri didn't want brok to go to mermaid was because Brok doesn't have the part of his soul to listen mermaid's words. And if he finds out, sindri fears brok wouldn't forgive him. So many little details scattered through the game. Sms put so much thoughts into writing a great story. Edit: also, mermaid also asked to give back the spear(for blessing) with hand gesture but kratos didn't. She looks offended for that lol😂
Those who think the spear is shit, it’s the best way to best found armies. The siphon skill can suck up whatever enemy buff and inflict it back. In this case - Bifrost. Try it
I think the mermaid is a reference to the Lady of the Lake who forged Excalibur of Arthurian myth, given how Mimir is a fae from Celtic myth, it makes sense to reference another mythology.
I think it's not just a reference since Mimir commented right after that he didn't think he would meet another "Mermaid that forges weapons" and name-drop Nimue. What I'm curious is if Lady of the Forge and Nimue is of the same species/race? There's even a Celtic Kelpie (for The Norns mission) in Midgard, so it's not a big stretch.
@@faradise3819 Everyone talks about the series heading to Egypt, but all the foreshadowing with Mimir, Macbeth, the kelpie and Shakespear, and now the Lady of the Lake, a Celtic/Arthurian mix sounds like it would make for an extremely interesting setting, one that's been set up just as much as Egypt.
@@70thalternativeaccount63 I'm always against the sequel being set in Egypt because Kratos already arrived there before reaching Midgard (Norse). He can't keep track of all of the spears Kratos throws and detonates and it becomes too much for him, leading to Kratos finally landing a hit which makes him lose his composure entirely. It also doesn't help that Kratos is a seasoned fighter and pretty much doesn't need to think much in order to fight well. When we stab his arm, he says "What's going on in that empty head?", suggesting that he can't read Kratos as well as he can others he fights.
@@gracecalis5421 whoops my bad got my gods mixed up and thanks for the clarification! man I really love how Santa Monica is great at coming up with this stuff!
That's why the storytelling in this videogame is simply phenomenal, the evolution of the character throughout this new arch fits perfectly
@@a7rivera1 yeah the exploding spear head discombobulates him. He reacts then catches it then it explodes. So it make his foresight work against him.
Kratos is the definition of impatient at times. In the water 5 seconds "wHeRe iS ThE fOrGe?"
Same energy as are you a jedi?
Of coz you gonna ask, if suddenly you submerged into nowhere 😂
I love how the spear scene and the blades of chaos scene are completely opposite in tone, but are both equally powerful moments in their respective games.
Kratos getting the Blades was a reminder of his past sins.
But the spear is a reminder of his roots in Sparta.
Goosebumps when kratos says, “it is the first weapon a spartan learns”. Brok instantly realises this weapon is gonna kick some asses
I keep coming back to rewatch this scene again and again. It’s just so moving.
It’s my favorite out of the whole game tbh. A lot of great ones. Whole game was great. But man, there’s nothing like that Svartalfheim theme playing as Kratos yells “IT IS THE FIRST WEAPON A SPARTAN LEARNS”
The mermaid is astoundingly beautiful as a designed creature. She has such an elegance to her and her eyes spoke for her. Masterclass design.
I definitely agree! She appeared only a short while without saying a word yet left such an impression on us 🥰❤️🔥

Kratos wasn’t really surprised about the mermaid, he was prolly just surprised that these ones don’t hypnotize and seduce you like they did to the Ol’odyssey
Ah yes moment on GOW2 AND GOW 3
Ah good times
That Mermaid design felt so right, definitely what a Mermaid should look like (Would like to see more designers lean into this more logically natural look), not to mention her awesome Cold Forge technique which is quite original.
I'm gonna believe she actually blessed the weapon, but at the same time, poor Brok
It didn’t need a blessing. It is already magical by creation. Has the blood of a god enchanted into it. Blacksmith blessing is a thing of culture.

Definitely teared up when he said "It is the nature of a thing that matters. Not its form." The growth of Kratos in this game is absolutely amazing.
I teared up seeing Kratos kneeling for Brok's blessing. He has come a long way from just blind rage and violence. Rmbr how he treated Hephaestus in GoW3?? Fatherhood really changes people..
Yea I got kinda emotional too
The best part is that in 6:25 you can see the Mermaid actually gave her blessing but Kratos asked Brok for his blessing anyway to make him feel good. Kratos went through so much character development. This game is a blessing.
Her silent approval. She DID make a weapon for a Spartan turned God. Mostly for a Spartan tho. She seemed to like the Lambda symbol better then the Omega symbol. 😅
That is exactly what I thought was the case. Kratos asked for Brok's blessing only to make him feel good and show him respect.
The whole spear scene is a masterpiece, and one of my favorites in the game, even most movies from nowadays lack this quality.
Yeah, getting a badass spear is way better than getting a weapon that’s literally similar to the one we already have. 6:08

6:55 you can hear Raebs lament when realizes. This whole scene just got sadder
5:20 The look of surprise on the Lady's face kinda be like: "Oh, so he's THAT guy........"

I love this weapon already I was so happy to finally feel like a spartan again. Now all I want is for him to get a phalanx shield and do the walk
The shield he got from faye is very well the closet thing we get to a phalanx shield imo
Spartans! WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?!
The memories this spear brought back of the arms of Sparta from Ghost of Sparta was immaculate, I so wanted them to be back and they actually are!
S tier job Santa Monica .. S freaking tier
So much compassion and wisdom from Kratos, it's amazing
Damn Kratos bringing in a lot of ancient greek spice wherever he goes, especially that of Platon
I love the bioluminescence this mermaid has. Also, if I'm being honest, this is way cooler then Mjolnir.
And way more convenient
THE DRAUPNIR SPEAR IS THE RIVAL OF THE GUNGNIR SPEAR OF ODIN
No its not. Hammer smashes
Indeed, I think a new spear is more fitting for Kratos than Mjolnir where the Leviathan Axe is already an equivalent.
@@yarramasterwannaberappernu9617 Nah. Spear is cooler. Plus, Axe already does same thing as hammer.
I love the little smile she has when she made the spear
7:40 kratos speaking from the heart here
It's quite possible that this lady mermaid were also the one (or member of the mermaid race) who gives King Arthur his sword.
In one of the boat dialogues, Mimir mentions someone similar to The Lady of the Forge who specializes in swords. He even drops her name: Nimue.
A spear weapon once again!!! 😊🎉
It is the nature of a thing that matters, not it’s form.
May this weapon strike true.
May it be wielded with wisdom.
May it be put down when its job is one.
I know the draupnir getting turned into a spear was cool- but seeing Kratos wield it against Odin who has Gungnir is very cool.
I really thought I was going to do some underwater battle and got really excited because Kratos kills anything in his way :). But I am still happy because the amount of cool characters in this game is just too good to be true. It almost feels like a Guillermo del Toro movie.
Not sure if anyone notice this but those who play GOW The Ghost of Sparta(PSP), there is the Spartan Shield and Spear symbol after the Omega symbol
Deimos had it until was killed by tanatos
Best weapon ngl

Fun Fact : The Gungnir is the true name of this spear in myth , it means "The spear which may never missed " , it was odin`s weapon , odin wield a spear in game too , but I would rather believe this one is the true gungnir , however it was blessed by the greatest Dwarf forger ...
Small detail at 5:15 notice when Kratos’ blood transforms into the Greek symbol for war the lady looks confused most likely because she’s looking at a symbol that she hasn’t seen before
Got to this part tonight and I audibly screamed “FUCK YEAH” when the spear came together. Ghost of Sparta was the best psp game :p
Draupnir were actually a Ring rather than a Spear. Odin use it to duplicate himself over the whole Nine Realms.
and now its power to replicate itself was passed onto the spear
It's still a ring in the game as well as a spear.
@@anthonynguyen4088 no she forced the spear in the ring so now it can multiply
Draupnir is also a ring in the game, Brok and Sindri got it back from Odin after deciding that he didn't deserve it. They give it to Kratos so that mermaid can forge it into a weapon, since the fact that the ring multiplies means that the spear does as well. They need it to multiply because Heimdall can foresee any move, so the only way to defeat him is by having infinite moves.
a spartan is incomplete without his shield and spear.
Toniight we dine in Hellllheimmm
But the Shield is VERY IMPORTANT. You lose your spear you’re mocked and teased. Lose your shield you are yelled at and a disgrace. The shield protects you, the person behind you, and thr ones beside you
The forge is more than it seems. Observe the periphery as you enter the submersion dome... you’re traveling to the bottom of the crater lake of a dormant/extinct volcano.
I had to google what that meant but I think you're right! That's pretty cool to know.
When Brok said that’s right he sounded like that sound effect from Vanoss videos🤣🤣2:16
She blessed it with her hand gesture thru her soul
I love how nice Kratos was with Brok. Few esconde after Brok realizes he is dead, Kratos ask him to bless his new weapon. It shows how much Kratos chaged for the better since the events of greece.
If it wasn't for how iconic the blades of chaos have always been for Kratos/how marketable they are, I could legit believe the spear would be Kratos' main weapon from here on out as the one weapon he truly feels comfortable and happy using above all else.
So Atreus gets a new sword and kratos a new spear…. 10/10
That music when he puts the ring on and summons the Spear is fire.
"May this weapon strike true
May it be wielded with wisdom
May it be put down when its job is done"
Brok's blessing not only applied to the spear but also to himself. He gave Kratos one of the strongest weapon that can even helped him defeat Heimdall. His riddle gave the smartest man alive a headache. And after he uncovered Odin's disguise.... His job is done.
1:16 Brok never got to tell the tale of the ax.
“It is the nature of a thing that matters, not it’s form.”- kratos, the god of war

It is amazing

5:53 that build up tho!
ITS PERFECT 👌
I think the mermaid is a reference to the Lady of the Lake who forged Excalibur of Arthurian myth, given how Mimir is a fae from Celtic myth, it makes sense to reference another mythology.
THE LADY OF THE LAKE NIMUE
But since we're pretty likely to follow Atreus after this, it might be much more awesome if the next game is actually a multi-pantheon journey, hopping from nation to nation.
Omg THE SCORE when he summons the spear!!!!!!
The old style green music rising at 5:53 is beautiful
When I first saw kratos got the spear, I completely forgot this is his 3rd spear because in the previous god of war games he did have the spear of destiny and the arms of Sparta.
The mermaid could sense that kratos values his memories with his spartan comrades more than his time as the god of war, probably why she changed the symbol from omega to the spartan symbol
The second Kratos asked for Broks blessing I knew he was going to die at some point
I teared up a little when Kratos knelt for Brok. It reminded me of when Aragorn and all of Gondor knelt for the Hobbits at the end of Return of the King. Powerful stuff.

I don’t know if I’m alone on this one. I noticed the cloth formed on the spear is almost exactly the same as the one in the previous game when Kratos got the blades of chaos. Another reference to his spartan heritage? It’s awesome either way!
