@@tsfurlan well, I understand that. I’m a classic rock historian. I’m aware of bands that came before them. Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC and so on. My point is, that song was/is in such regular rotation on classic rock radio that it’s become a staple of that genre. The song was released in 1976, and the term “classic rock” really wasn’t established until about 1980.
Yes very representative. If you play Heart Greatest Hits, maybe you already understand a lot about the hard rock musical approach of the 70s including the influences, arrangements... and the recording production & mixing style (to my ear often fairly isolated, clean clear dry sounds with very precise and formal-sounding overdubs - kind of the antithesis of a live recorded version which tended to blend together more and have more 'human feel' to it.)
The sisters filled a large void in the rock world. My teenage years wouldn't have been as good without them. They helped everyone in having good times.
@@georgebarry8640 Ann and Nancy should be reminded forever how they ruined Heart by eliminating the original lineup of a band THEY were asked to join. They completely neutered the band.
@@johndeaux3703 I couldn't agree with you more.Their talent has been recognized again and again, so need to do it here. But CHEMISTRY is rare. And once Fisher,Dorosier and Fossen were out...the band NEVER attained the creativity achieved with them. They destroyed what made them.
Ann and Nancy could have the Muppets playing with them and they would still be the ONLY people in Heart. I'm sorry if that hurts your little sad man feelings but those two are some of the best musicians of all time easily. Saying otherwise is just stupid.
Ann Wilson is the bomb. The range and versatility in her vocals-of various musical genres-is unmatched. She goes from a whisper to a roar and back effortlessly. She was just getting started with Magic Man! Her body of work to this day is amazing, whether it be Heart, solo projects, or whatever. Killer in the studio, but her voice is way better live in concert because of her true, authentic presence.
Ann Wilson, more than any other artist has influenced me as a vocalist. Hands down she is the most phenomenal vocalist of the last several generations. I love lots of others too, but in my opinion all bow down to Ann.
Heart is one of those bands that have songs that don't know when to quit. The opening riff of "Barracuda" combined with the clean vocals made me an instant fan first time I heard it on the local radio. They were truly a ground breaking band at the time. To this day, they are a part of classic rock due to fact they helped form it.
My Lord!! Ann is still so incredibly beautiful! Her speaking voice is transcending. Thank you for being such an awesome influence in our culture. Your music is timeless
She looks amazing actually. And I saw a video of Nancy doing a tutorial on "Battle of Evermore" on mandolin .. she looks amazing too! In my dorm, freshman year in college, I had a poster of Ann and Nancy. I was in love with both of them.
2 Key Points: 1) Ann is just SUCH a cool Spirit! Love her energy, outlook on life, she's just someone you could hang-out with for a looooong time and enjoy. 2) It's NO surprise that Ann is one of the best female vocalists of all time, and best vocalists of any category. She just naturally sounds amazing. Like Jim Morrison, she doesn't even need to sing!! - I could listen to her talk for hours...even her speech is MUSIC!! Such an amazing woman. Best wishes to you Ann, and Gods bless for all the lives you have enriched with your energy and your sharing! MUCH Love!
Underrated??? Heart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. But R.E.M. was inducted in 2006. Can you believe that crap. This caught everyone by surprise as people thought more prestigious bands should have been inducted first. R.E.M. made it into the Rock In Roll Hall of Fame during the first induction. Their first hit was in 1981. Heart had already made a name for themselves as a being a major rock n roll band before R.E.M with popular hits of Magic Man, Dreamboat Annie, Barracuda, Crazy on You, Little Queen, and others. Heart has definitely achieved alot more success as a band than R.E.M. and they are still a main band on classic rock stations.
Here we go, that magic UA-cam word that's banded about with the wrong connetations. In my opinion underrated means that it is not very good, not rated because its rubbish. They are hardly underrated and if so by whom?
Ann Wilson has been a huge influence on my vocal style since my older brother played the Dreamboat Annie album for me when I was 10 yrs old! What blew me away was her range and clarity! Always gracious, always humble, she’s an iconic voice in music history!
I love that Ann sounds great whether she is singing soft ballads or completely rocking out. She can harmonize too. Her voice just WORKS!! There aren’t a lot of singers who are that adaptable. Mark Lindsay is one of the only male rock/pop singers with that ability. I’d have loved to hear the two of them on an album together rocking and harmonizing together.
Heart is my all time favorite band from the Northwest oh yes I live in Washington State & have since 1970 ... love Ann's voice but more so love Nancy and her kinda stand-off ways ... she's so classy and meeting the sisters was icing on the Cake .LOVE HEART ❤💙💜
I listen to their music as I grew up. I got married and had kids, they listen to their music. I took my kids to see concerts at Jones Beach on long island on several occasions and the best thing they saud to me was wow mom, that concert was the best, it was great to finally put a face to those songs. For that Nancy and Ann I thank you so much. Not only do my husband and I love you but my kids love you too. I walked out of that concert feeling like I won the lottery. My kids have such an appreciation of good music.
I'd love to hear more stories about how great singers learned to sing. Everyone likes asking guitarists if they're self taught or keyboard players if they're classically trained, but I feel like singers are rarely ever asked about how they started singing. It's a beautiful mystery to unravel, how someone comes to realize they can make music with their voice, and where that simple action can take them in life.
Well, I recently heard an interview or heard and speak and say that her chorus teacher taught her a technique that my mom taught me. My mom is a classically trained opera singer who taught vocal lessons. When you breathe, imagine feeling a glass of water. You feel it from the bottom up to breathe from the bottom of your stomach or diaphragm and fill it up. Never bread from the chest. You sing from the bottom up and that’s how you resonate like that
Ann is so awesome-- always gives a good interview. She's so articulate and genuine. And you are a great interviewer. You asked good questions and gave her the space to answer them.
I want to meet Ann Wilson so badly I could chew my arm off. I have been a fan since the beginning and, like Ann, I remember the first time I heard "Crazy on You" on the radio. I went out to our back porch and was walking and that intro came on and-no lie-I stopped in my tracks and stood there frozen. I could not believe what I was hearing. I can still see that moment to this day, almost like I was watching myself hear this-no pun intended-magic coming out of the radio, not to mention a female lead singer of a rock band. She changed my life and I'll be an admirer of hers forever.
Ann Wilson was the reason l fell in love with dark haired women , so striking , so talented , l am so grateful to have seen her live , to be here to witness the works of the Queen of rock vocals . Easily the greatest rock vocalist female or male of all time !!
Roger FiSher is one of the most criminally under rated guitarists ever. He gets love from those who know but i think hes right up there with the greats, an incredibly unique sound!!! This song is proof positive.
I have had the deepest love and respect for Ann since I first heard her when I was 12. She inspired my singing tremendously, even though I'm male. It used to hurt me to see her suffer over her weight when there were so many of us who loved and supported her unconditionally. What an amazing woman. I finally got to see her in the second row at a small venue on "The Ann Wilson Thing" tour. What an unforgettable experience after decades of admiration!
One of the best, funkiest grooves in music history. In a thousand years, people will still be discovering Magic Man for their first time and being blown away by what a small group of incredibly talented people could do way back in AD 1975.
I remember way back in 1978 I had gotten a brand new 60 watt Yamaha stereo system and the first new album I bought was Magazine by Heart. The very first song I played on the turntable and cranked up totally was Heartless. Man that sounded good.
Magic Man is my all time favorite Heart song. The weaving between Ann's voice and the guitar sounds makes it feel like a magical journey. It was sort of the same feeling I got from Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride resurfacing with a brilliantly beautiful voicing.
As a NW resident since the 70s, my parents had every Heart album they released until the 90s. My first guitar lesson involving an actual song was Dog and Butterfly and I used to learn them all. Ann Wilson.. amazing vocals. just amazing.
I always like the middle part of the song with the wordless “whoaohhhh” chorus and the signature changes and the synthesizer. There was a time when synthesizer was used in a very sparing but tasteful way. This is an example of it
Ann Wilson is a rare Talent and so is her sister Nancy I have been listening to them since the 70s and I love them! Ann is still stunningly beautiful very intelligent and also gracious I can't wait to see what comes next for her and her sister Nancy.
Wow, Professor....and the STILL gorgeous Ann Wilson, THANK YOU! I have my own story of this song, if I may.. In 76, at the ripe old age of 22, I was single, working in a business that gave me the opportunity, freedom and frankly the coin to truly enjoy life. I still love my high school years very fondly, graduating in 72. But late 75 and 76 was my "hayday". First, as I have mentioned to you before here, Heart was and still is my favorite band of all time. Their music was incredible, and had a profound impact in that time, and later as well. But those years, it was not only great music but almost an anthem. AND, of course, I had THE BIGGEST crush on Ann Wilson. Her voice was like a siren's song, and she was so incredibly gorgeous, and I am sure I wasn't the only one in that age group to feel the same way. During that time, I had just bought the car of my dreams, a 1976 Mercury Capri Black Cat limited edition. I had the moon roof, the 5 speed, 2000 v6 engine, which really lit that little light weight car on fire, and of course, the OBLIGATORY Blaupunkt 8 track stereo system with 6 speakers. The car wasn't much bigger than the speakers! And I played that tape, and particularly that song wide open, most of the time. The only way I can describe the feeling of flying down the highway here in Arizona (where at the time there were still some you could do that on ), just after sunset, windows down, roof open, and Magic Man testing the limits of my speakers, is kind of like the scene from Back to the Future, the first time he winds up the De Lorean... it was almost like reaching another dimension. And no, the song wasn't a personal "anthem" for me, or anything like that. I didn't see myself as "the Magic Man"...but Annie's vocal, Nancy and the rest of the band's instrumentation just made this such a "high", it was in itself magical. I STILL have that 8 track, as a keep sake. But I also have ALL of the successive platforms that came after that. Thank you sir, and thank you, Annie. You are still just as lovely as ever. And just found out today....our birthdays are two days apart! LOL. 6/17 and 6/19. Keep up the great work, and thanks for keeping memories of a great time alive.

Love you Ann!!
I am a huge fan of Heart and the Wilson sisters! Ann Wilson is the most incredible, most beautifully, extraordinarily talented singer of all time! Just seeing her in this interview brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful soul! I love what she said about not wasting their beautiful energy on singing about Charles Manson! I can tell she is deep and spiritual. I got to see Heart 22 years ago in Costa Mesa, CA, but Nancy was not there because she was having a baby. It was still a great show but we missed her. All the love 🙏💗👼
It's funny to listen to Ann, I am now 61 and I can remember as a teenager singing along to Ann, Stevie nicks, Karen Carpenter, all my female heroes, getting Ann's high notes are still tough for me, but I still love a heart tune coming on the radio when I'm in my car driving on the road, love Heart always

I don’t know where it went or if I’m just using the wrong search words. But I believe that she, Layne Staley, and Chris Cornell and some others all had the same vocal coach
Dig of you will this picture: A young black kid in Michigan, a juinior in high school. A funk fanatic huge on Parliament Funkadelic. Yet EVERYTIME Hearts' "Magic Man" would come on the radio I would sit there riveted- completely lost in the lyrics, those beautiful searing vocals from Ann, the gut grabbing canadian funk from the bass, the screaming guitar solo. I was hooked. Thus began my exploration into what I considered as The greatest female leading rock group in history: HEART. .
Oh my gosh, “ Magic Man” speaks for itself, the music, the lyrics, the musicians, and most of all Ann’s voice, gosh, just doesn’t get better. There is absolutely nothing like the music from the 70’s, one classic after another that you just don’t ever get tired of hearing it

And, having seen her live several times, she's an example of what TO do if that's your job - keep your voice in shape and only improve as you get more mature in your craft. She's such an incredible inspiration. Thank you for having her on your show!
“Magic Man” by Heart is one of those songs that gave birth to the term CLASSIC ROCK!
What planet are you living on? Think of the bands that came before them
@@tsfurlan well, I understand that.
Thomas, Sounds like he is living on planet earth.
@@latentsea thank you! 👍
The guitar on Magic Man is magical. A classic rock staple.
Hits? yes, they had hits post "The breakup"..but they could have eclipsed Led Zep...if they continued as they were (and Zep sales are continuous and seemingly forever!!!). Oh well. They destroyed what made them.
Ann and Nancy could have the Muppets playing with them and they would still be the ONLY people in Heart. I'm sorry if that hurts your little sad man feelings but those two are some of the best musicians of all time easily. Saying otherwise is just stupid.
@@2batgirl Wrong. The riffs defined the songs and they were his idea- fact. That's how rock rolls.
The best part!!!
By far the best female rock singer ever.
This video of Ann is certainly proof that 70 is the new 50! Beautiful!
Ann Wilson, more than any other artist has influenced me as a vocalist. Hands down she is the most phenomenal vocalist of the last several generations. I love lots of others too, but in my opinion all bow down to Ann.
Same here. As she has influenced Chris Cornell and Lane Staley and many of the greats both male and female. Johnete Napolitano, pink, etc etc etc
They both were groundbreaking female troubadours in modern music- Ann's
story about mis-spending her allowance on guitar says it all...
I don’t know that I remember her speaking voice being so husky and low. Awesome!! The fact that she sings the way she has and does is astounding.
She looks great
Simply gorgeous.
She looks amazing actually. And I saw a video of Nancy doing a tutorial on "Battle of Evermore" on mandolin .. she looks amazing too! In my dorm, freshman year in college, I had a poster of Ann and Nancy. I was in love with both of them.
i turned 60 this year and still have a huge crush on her...
She looks 20 years younger! I Heart Ann.
She is, without a doubt, 100%, the GOAT. Never one like her before or since. And never will be again.
THE greatest female rock voice. Period.
One of the greatest rock voices of any gender.
2 Key Points:
1) Ann is just SUCH a cool Spirit!
MUCH Love!
"Strolling down the city sidewalk alone in the crowd. No one knows the lonely one who's head's in the clouds." Thank You Ann for knowing!
Yeah ...Ann Wilson, the Queen of Rock n' Roll ; and Jim Morrison, the King of Rock n ' Roll !
My two favorite singers, in two of my favorite bands !
Absolutely fantastic interview, Heart is still an underrated band. They deserve more.
Was fortunate enough to see them three times. Excellent band live! Saw them at SEATAC airport one time, brain freeze, there they were. 😳😂
One of the best vocalist of all time . Who didn’t fall in love with Ann in the 70-80’ ??
Ann Wilson is the GOAT.
Oh yeah? You think so? Well... Stevie Nicks SOUNDS like a goat.
LOL !! That's Funny !! But She Is BADASS !! Without a Doubt !!! 👍
I love how Ann honours her family. Ann's humility is beautiful. Thank you Ann and Heart for the music.
I love Ann we are lucky to have her with us
Ann Wilson one of the best voices ever
She's a gorgeous woman. And I love Heart!! Barracuda and Crazy on you are my song!!
Ann will always be a Rock Godess amazing voice ❤️
Ann''s beauty has always been underrated, imo. Great interview! Iconic voice.
Ann Wilson’s vocals are like a Masterclass in singing. 🎤🎶
She's amazing and seriously beautiful
Ann Wilson has been a huge influence on my vocal style since my older brother played the Dreamboat Annie album for me when I was 10 yrs old! What blew me away was her range and clarity! Always gracious, always humble, she’s an iconic voice in music history!
You can't help but get completely trapped in this song, the electrics, the acoustics, the rhythm, and Ann's angelic vocals, just spellbinding.
Not only the most powerful singer but her singing method is flawless and totally natural...not to forget the real beauty of the voice itself.
Heart is my all time favorite band from the Northwest oh yes I live in Washington State & have since 1970 ... love Ann's voice but more so love Nancy and her kinda stand-off ways ... she's so classy and meeting the sisters was icing on the Cake
.LOVE HEART ❤💙💜
Ann is and will always be.....THE QUEEN!!!
She's iconic & she's radiant! About The Magic Man... "truth is, that love was there all along, it just took them to bring it out." True that!
Ann is a Legend!
Lucid, intelligent and cool, I always thought she was class and she is.
Ann Wilson was the reason l fell in love with dark haired women , so striking , so talented , l am so grateful to have seen her live , to be here to witness the works of the Queen of rock vocals . Easily the greatest rock vocalist female or male of all time !!
Ann Wilson: the finest, most powerful rock singer. She set a very high bar.
I’ve always loved Heart.
Roger FiSher is one of the most criminally under rated guitarists ever. He gets love from those who know but i think hes right up there with the greats, an incredibly unique sound!!! This song is proof positive.
"Dream of the Archer' off Little Queen...still gives me goose bumps. It takes me to that moment in time...
All songs that and sings give me goosebumps except for the one she didn’t want to record
Ann Wilson, such a talented vocalist and songwriter, and she can still belt out a song. Good for her and the Heart, they totally rocked.
I remember way back in 1978 I had gotten a brand new 60 watt Yamaha stereo system and the first new album I bought was Magazine by Heart. The very first song I played on the turntable and cranked up totally was Heartless. Man that sounded good.
Great choice....
Great one to play loud.
In my opinion Ann Wilson has the best female rock voice ever, and very beautiful too
Magic Man is my all time favorite Heart song. The weaving between Ann's voice and the guitar sounds makes it feel like a magical journey. It was sort of the same feeling I got from Steppenwolf's Magic Carpet Ride resurfacing with a brilliantly beautiful voicing.
I'm going with These Dreams as the their best song.
@@leahwhiteley5164 That's a good choice. :)
@@dbuck5350 They have so many great songs it's hard to pick just one. I also like "Stranded". Ann makes me come to tears on that one.
Crazy on You is mine
@@skoolie_life3261 Another great song!
One of the most powerful voices in music. I love her for the impression she has on me with that tough, forceful style.
She is an all time great singer and songwriter.
This is an example of it
Just a personal opinion, but she has GOT to be one of THE greatest rock singers of all time.
She’s powerful!
I have been in love with Heart for a long, long time. Their music remains unfettered by time.
Ann Wilson is a rare Talent and so is her sister Nancy I have been listening to them since the 70s and I love them!
Ann is still stunningly beautiful very intelligent and also gracious I can't wait to see what comes next for her and her sister Nancy.
Her voice!!!!!!!!!!!!! And she's fly!
Impressive! Anne Wilson! The greatest vocalist ever! What a range! Her sister Nancy aequally incredible vocals and guitar! Love their songs and how they move people emotionally!
I love heart since i was in my twenties. I think HEART became famous not only because of their great music, but also, because they were woman who opened the doors for many other talented woman. They rock.
Ann Wilson is the greatest female lead singer in Rock history!
I took my father to see Ann and Tripsitter at the Goodyear theater in Akron Ohio just a couple weeks ago. I grew up with all of Hearts music as well as all the bands back then. She is both mine and my father’s all time favorite female vocalist. Her new songs “This is now” and “Black Wing” are both awesome. Whenever she comes around I’ll be there with bells on.
Abba too! And then Blondie!
Ann & Nancy are an inspiration to a lot of musicians including me!! ❤️Heart is one of my favorite bands!!🎼🎤🎸🎵🥁
She is such a gifted singer. The conviction she sings 'Straight On' with gets me every time. Her and Nancy's harmonies were so powerful, and they complimented each other so perfectly. ❤
She is as beautiful as ever. Love her so much.
I’m 65. I’ve had a crush on Ann and Nancy since I was 20. One of my favorite bands ever. Bought their LPs and wore them out listening. They are magic!
I discovered heart last year (I know super late but I’m Gen Z and my parents didn’t play rock growing up). Thee are super sickkk. I love Ann’s voice and practice my singing to their songs
Heart is my favorite female rock group of all time.
As much as I liked the interview, I was hoping to hear more about her singing techniques and what she draws from when she belts it out. I love Ann Wilson, she’s phenomenal
There is a UA-cam video where she literally gives a group of people a voice lesson
Wha?! I’ve got to find it
@@jonmacias499 Give me a minute and I’ll find it for you
I don’t know where it went or if I’m just using the wrong search words. But I believe that she, Layne Staley, and Chris Cornell and some others all had the same vocal coach
Thank you, you’re too kind
Dig of you will this picture:
A young black kid in Michigan, a juinior in high school.
Thus began my exploration into what I considered as
The greatest female leading rock group in history: HEART.
.
Oh my gosh, “ Magic Man” speaks for itself, the music, the lyrics, the musicians, and most of all Ann’s voice, gosh, just doesn’t get better. There is absolutely nothing like the music from the 70’s, one classic after another that you just don’t ever get tired of hearing it
Still crushing on this Women!!! Her spirit is one of an kind.
Great interview. Heart is my all-time favorite band. They're so good and phenomenal in concert!
Love hearing the story behind the production of “Magic Man”
Their early sound was quintessential FM - love the stillness behind the sound
Ann is still as hot as she was back in the late seventies. Oh my god she is so talented and at 70 she can still bring it!.
I agree - her vocal talent is amazing and on top of it, she’s gorgeous!
Love Heart for a long time :💘💖💗💯
Great interview! My all-time favoritre group of growing up....loved hearing her story about hearing "Magic Man" and pulling off the road, Sweet story and a classy lady.
My favorite song ever!
I absolutely adore Ann Wilson. Possibly the greatest female rock voice ever.
I saw Heart twice, "back in the day." Awesome then, and still to this day. Nothing like them in these days... Glad I had the privilege to see them twice, and so happy to see these videos on UA-cam. 👍😀
Love her and her fierceness in the male dominated rock industry....and what a voice....Crazy On You is epic
I was a teenager when this song came out. I remember when I used to do homework on the floor of my bedroom listening to the local rock station. I had a crush on both the Wilson sisters and a girl in my neighborhood. My parents used to yell for me to turn down the music. Now I'm an old man still listening to the same music (occasionally) and still enjoying it.
I have mangy vinyl's of Ann and Nancy...Had them for over thirty years.....May the grace of the Heavens continue to fall upon you....
