What Makes This Singer Great? Ann Wilson - Heart
Ann Wilson is surely one of the most influential female rock vocalists of all time and today I'll be sharing with you what I think makes her great.
Fronting the band Heart, her career was defined over two eras and Ann's smooth vocals delivered a range of great tunes that remain timeless.
Growing up Wilson had a rather shy personality which was partially due to the fact that she used to stutter. Aside from that, Wilson had a problem with being overweight and she was often bullied about it, which didn't help the way she felt about herself.
In order to deal with her low self-esteem, she took up singing, first performing in bars in Seattle where she managed to find fulfillment in performing onstage.
As she overcame her personal challenges, Ann's career blossomed and she developed into the talented singer and songwriter that we all know.
I'll be taking a look at a performance featuring a cool, acoustic rendition of "Alone". I hope you all enjoy the video and make sure to share your comments on what you thought made Ann great!

She was born great. Can’t replicate, beyond words….she is the Queen
Ann Wilson is simply the best rock vocalist of all time. Her belt in Alone is epic! That belt in Alone always gives me goosebumps. You should do Crazy On You and Dog and Butterfly.
she sang Stairway to Heaven at the Led Zeppelin honors concert in front of Plant, Page & Jones and had Plant in tears of joy. I doubt anyone can top that level of praise or talent.
Epic performance.
@@kentamplin _that was a great performance!! I have really enjoyed this series, Ken......if u get a couple minutes.....this is one of the great vocal covers I have heard of heart........ua-cam.com/video/UZV9KZaY3pU/v-deo.html
Beth Hart sang Changes in front of Black Sabbath, sang Jimi Hendrix songs with the Hendrix family, sang Soulshine with Gov't Mule which is a side project of the Allman Brothers and also sang I'd Rather Go Blind at the same Kennedy Honors event. The performances of Heart and Beth Hart were considered by the Kennedy Center Honors to be in the top five performances the that Honors have had.
Ann is defiantly the bar on what makes a great all around singer.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Yes it was.
Epic performance. I hope you heard her version of Immigrant Song. Amazing!!
Annie and Lou Gramm are in a league of their own! Goosebumps!!
Her diction is so clear, you can hear every word. What a gift to us all.
She was , is and will be the best rock singer in the world 🌍 ❤
She certainly deserved to be in the rock & roll hall of fame. She can still sing like a monster.
Indeed!
There’s nothing “not great” about Ann Wilson!! Heaven sent!!
Lol
Ann Wilson is synonym of perfection . I don't like all her songs but she is out of this world !
Nice!
She's a legendary rock powerhouse vocalist.
agree
vigorvitales 💯
Ann Wilson has a one of a kind vocal mastery. She can sing as softly as the petals of a rose; she can sing pure power like a hurricane.
Thanks! Rock on! 👍💜🎤
Beautifully stated. “Petals of a Rose and pure power like a hurricane” Perfect description of Ann’s voice ❤
FOURTY YEARS LATER and these ladies are still TEARING IT UP!
RIght?!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy When Ann and Nancy performed Stairway to Heaven for honoring Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, WOW that let me know Ann takes care of her voice and Nancy can still play the guitar with passion.
About 40 years to get inducted into the RnR Hall if fame? I guess better late than never. (This years list is “interesting”).
One of my all time favourite singers phenomenal stunning vocalist ! ♥️🎶👍🏼✨
When I think of Ann, I picture her wailing out on vocals and her sister Nancy killing it on guitar! I also look at her as an inspirational person who triumphed over so many issues to stand tall among the pantheon of Rock legends. She has proven that anything is possible with the right attitude, hard work and dedication to your craft.
Ann is great, no doubt!
The first concert I ever saw was Heart, when I was 12, and it changed my life! Never stopped loving the Wilson sisters and Heart
Laura Del Rey ❤️
Very honest vocals... nowhere to hide in a setting like that......rich voice.
Well said!
Love Ann Wilson voice
The radio was alive with the sounds of life in the Seventies and there was an endless stream of great music and Heart was one of those groups--Crazy on You and Magic Man were enough to cement their place on the Mountain of Rock. And on the radio or the Midnight Special, it was Ann that made those songs hot to the touch. She soared and wailed and smoked and emoted.
She's great!
Something grand happens when Ann lets her soul fly; she has a voice for generations. I found her around 1990 when I was ten and I've since come to realise that she's probably the best rock belter ever. Warmth, tone, effortlessness bordering on ridiculousness and just being right there in every moment.
All that said, my favourite moment in the Heart catalogue is probably Dog and Butterfly. Such an organic piece with everything just affirming life.
Anders Eklund ❤️
Clear sound, perfect technique, perfect pitch, great range, heartfelt interpretation, great musician. Simply a great singer.
Couldn't agree more, Jean-Pierre Huot!
@@kentamplin Oh wow! Thanks for replying, Ken! I keep watching your videos, you're amazing! I used to be a singer myself. I have a Michael Bublé kind of voice, not by choice. I have never been able to develop my mixed voice. For me, it's either full voice or falsetto. I bought a bunch of techniques but nothing works. I know the theory, I know how it should feel, I know I should not increase the volume when I go up but in spite of all the practice, it doesn't work. It's like my voice can't do what you do, and I so wish it could. Appreciate your gift, it's very precious.
YES!!!!!!!!!
Ann Wilson has been my female vocal hero since 1977❤
When I think of Ann, and what makes her the master at her craft is her raw power and her never compromising demeanor in a Male driven world.
She is not what she used to be since the early 90s, but she never disappoints with her limited range and shortness of breath in 2020!!
I have seen heart 15 times, and god willing will see her and her sister again.
Thank you Ken, stay safe my friend.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, David!
She is a force of nature! Awesome!
For sure!
I've always been impressed with the amount of emotion Ann Wilson conveys in her vocals. She is one of the few singers who can bring me to tears. Nancy's no slouch vocally either.
Gary Sauheaver ❤️
Ann has entertained us for a long time, and always rings the bell. Love Ann. Love Nancy. Love Heart.
Tom Caldwell ❤️
Her vibrato and vowel treatment on that last "ah-lohooooooo-nuh" was incredible. I'm always impressed when I hear a great "oo" vowel up high. Steve Walsh is another with these ringing high "oo" vowels.
Great stuff!
She and Heart were the pioneers for all the female rockers that came after in my opinion
Absolutely, URbano!
Her voice is very powelful ❤️❤️❤️ really love her.
She's the G.O.A.T.!
No one can outshine Ann when she hits the loud and high notes 💕 you can feel the audience waiting in anticipation for the best part of the song to come 👍
Yep! Waiting for "that note"!
For female power rock vocals, she is the GOAT. Period.
Nancy is a hell of a singer, too. I didn't know until recent times that she had sung lead on These Dreams. She has a nice rasp to her voice.
Tim Ramich 👍
Nancy actually had a cold when she did the studio LV for These Dreams, which was Heart's only #1 song on the charts.
She does have a very good voice however I think Ann’s voice is way more powerful
@@paulvincent6191they also hit #1 with this song Alone and was there for 3 weeks I believe. ❤
Her voice is one of a kind. When you here her sing, you recognize it's her immediately. I never tire of this band.
Rock on!
Ann Wilson has been my favorite singer for 35 years and I've had the pleasure of seeing her live (with Heart & solo) many times...It's always great to see her talent being recognized and appreciated...Thank you...
Rock on! Thanks for the visit!
Ann is an instrument in itself. Never disappoints. Shes real, genuine and a blessing to the music industry.💖flawless, so much passion and conviction in each performance.
Rock on! 👍💜😀
Yes, I love Heart! I had the pleasure of seeing them on their tour just last year. Even approaching 70, Ann's voice is as powerful as ever!
Awesome!
She’s phenomenal! Unforgettable!!
Rock on!
I see ann wilson, I click automatically
As you should, kalungkutan! 😉
me too....Ann Wilson is a vocal beast!
One of the best rock voices ever
For sure!
As a preteen/early teen in the 80's I had a huge crush on her, she's beautiful. That voice too yowza, she's a powerhouse. Love her vibrato!
She sure is!
Heart has always been my favorite band and I've seen them or Ann live over 20 times and have met both Ann and Nancy together and on separate occasions. One thing that always stands out to me and makes Ann great is that she is 100% in every time! She gives it her all every show. She is always genuinely interested in feedback regarding the music, her vocals, the overall performance. That's what lights her up after a show if you have the opportunity to meet her. She and Nancy are always so professional and never sloppy or just "phoning it in". They are both amazing artists that know their craft and they're really cool people too.
Thanks, Alanna! 😀👍
Ann Wilson is the most perfect voice in rock history. She is timeless, she is perfection. Also, she is one of the most influential rock singers ever. Her voice is perfect as Beethoven's music. You know, she has the most beautiful tone of voice in the universe. I love her voice. In her live shows, she never fails. She sings Zeppelin better than Robert Plant, sorry, but it's true 😁 😁 😁
Stalin Cruz 👍👍👍
Eso es todo❗❗👍👍
Su Majestad ANN WILSON 👑
For me it’s a tie: Anne Wilson and Steve Perry. They would be a dream together on stage!
Absolutely... She's the greatest! And she's been doing some solo performing, blues. Move over Janis Joplin! Her control and ability is pure perfection, with all the power and glorious ability to belt and deliver.
Stalin Cruz you are a diamond in the rough. You worded that so eloquently!! Rock On STALIN!!
As a little girl i one recorded myself on a tape singing to Alone at 12 years old i forgot about it and my step dad found it in his stuff and played it back to me when i was 17..it was awful but i heard a dreamer trying so hard with all of her heart! Nobody can hold a torch to her..I learned to be myself because everyone else is taken😍🎼💥💃
Rock on!
I think of my hometown and how we all grew up so proud of Heart being played on KZOK and KISW in the 70s.
Verry cool, mella mell!
She is the greatest female rock voice of all time...effortless...amaizing!
Absolutely, Les!
Ann Wilson is The Bomb-the best female vocalist ever. I remember when Heart was in the charts with “Alone”- Bloody brilliant 😍Her voice is my inspiration🥰
Emma Phillips 💣💣💣
I love the vocal and guitar gymnastics in Crazy for you. As well as the classics Barracuda, Magicman and Tall dark handsome stranger
Thanks for the visit. Rock on!
Love the early work...Magic Man and Crazy on You but also love the sweet tones of Dog and Butterfly and Dreamboat Annie...growing up in the 80s and 90s the power of All I Wanna Do, Alone and a personal favourite Will You Be There In The Morning. Ann Wilson made Seattle cool before Grunge came along.
She did!
In my opinion two of the greatest ladies of rock from a vocal standpoint are Ann Wilson and Pat Benatar. I think with performers there is so much that goes into making someone a "great". Voice quality and tone, charisma, stage presence, back up musicians, and much more. Its a total package thing for me. I do love the sound of those two ladies voices and have for a long time. Thanks Ken for spotlighting Ann Wilson.
Great ones!
Nancy can obviously 'feel' her sister. Ann kills it. I love Heart
Thanks Ken. 🤗😷
Me too!
Saw Heart in concert early 90's (front row!) and was astounded at how perfect Ann sings live. She is definitely my favorite female singer of all time. Beautiful woman with beautiful vocals.
Ann Wilson is one of the greatest female rock singers of all time love her sound when she sings loved her with heart love what about love and alone she's my mom's favorite female singer but yea awesome she is the bomb spot on great vocals great tone love her voice Ken 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

The princess of Rock!
Maybe the queen!
@@kentamplin for me, the queen is Janis! Have a good Afternoon!
@@carloseugeniocarlos4287 Fair enough!
I have been honoring this lady since I first heard her as a child in 1976. She's a national treasure and a Goddess of Rock and Roll. I'm so happy she's still performing today. She and her sister both, are huge talents.
Thanks for the visit. Rock on!
I don't know much about music; the genuine look of respect on your face when you see good singing is why I enjoy this video.
Thanks so much!
ay@@kentamplin Ken, can I say this much. Continue with the voices of rockers. I came to your channel to figure out Steve Perry's perfect pitch.
Now I'm in with Heart.
I don't understand music, but I love watching you talk about music, It helps me understand.
Thank you Ken. I love Ann Wilson and Heart. Girl power 🤘
Go, go girl power!!
Ann will always be my favorite female rock singer. I always loved Mistral Wind on the Greatest Hits Live album.
Great ones!
I can believe there is a heaven because, I now have heard the angles sing!
I'm glad you said that about Celine. I loved Celines voice all my life. Lately I'm hearing a beautiful voice but with question on certain notes.
Gina Notaro 👍
Oh man, Ann is such a great singer and performer! Her rock vocals are so unique and recognizable. Heart is a great band and I totally agree with the point that they always deliver a great show. I remember listening to ann covering "she talks to angels" by the Black Crowes. Man there she showed that she is also able to sing slow songs but with huge emotions. What a great artist she is.
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
She really is!
I really love her! All of my 2018 I spent listening to Heart and Fleetwood Mac
Fred Alves ❤️
Ann Wilson is the Buffalo Trace of awesome female vocals. Everyone wants it because it's perfect smooth and unassuming, but only a few can ever get to her level of effortless perfection.
I grew up in the 80's loved Heart Happy Monday
💗💗💗
Ann's voice brings tears to my eyes:)
Mine too!
THE GOAT hands down the greatest female rock vocalist HANDS DOWN ......... MIC DROP
OH........OF ALL TIME !!!!!! the Ric Flair of female rock vocalist
When i think of Ann Wilson the word Devastating comes to mind!
She is awesome!
what a fantastic voice. nancy as well doing backgrounds. timeless stuff I could listen to her on barracuda, alone, crazy on you etc... forever...
Absolutely, Scott!
She definitely is one of the best female rock singers even today. I wish she performed it with the original speed and and electric guitars. She mainly only performs it acoustic these days but still an amazing performer.
What Ann is known for in my mind is her ability to improvise during live performances so brilliantly. You will never hear her sing a song the same way twice. She changes things up on the spot and it makes live performances very exciting.
👍
Ann’s voice is powerful and authoritative! So strong, amazing how she nails them!
I love this duo. What makes Ann great for me are those moments when she takes her singing to the apparent edge of her own abilities, yet stilll manages to nail it... consistently throughout her career and now at age 70.
Ann is great, no doubt about it!
I saw Heart at the Birmingham NEC 1985 - Anne - live is a treat everyone should get to hear! The best rock voice every!
For sure!
Heart has some of the most recognizable songs in history. They take me right back to my childhood, everytime.
For sure!
Ann is perfection!
The Queen!! I’m still waiting to hear someone take on her vocals on Wait for an Answer. How she does it I dont know 🤯💜
She's wonderful!
Lzzy Hale can take on her.
And Wilson voice is one of the best voices I've ever heard there's a little small clip of Anna and her sister I think they're backstage getting ready for a show it's a I think I'm black and white and turn her sister start singing a 1950's song I can't remember the name of the song right now that you can really hear the quality of these girls voices and I'm telling you I've been blown away by the hope you can find it if I find it I'll send it to you but y'all should look for it it's just mind-blowing.
Thank you!
I want to get that video too! Pls
Hey Ken do you happen to know the name of the guitarist standing next to Nancy on stage in the red shirt I know Nancy has a red red shirt on to but he's next to her he is amazing and I just wanted to know his name wondering whatever happened to him. Thank you
@@egaeca1 I suspect it was Howard Leese. He's been with Heart forever. Howard plays with Paul Rodgers and Band Company, too. He's been around forever.
I think it was Rogers because he was the hot one. And I think it said he'd been with the group from 72 to 80 something like that and had a relationship with an for a while you seem like a really good guitarist but not sure how he Stacks up. Thank you for that video you sent that was awesome
I totally agree ken ♥ heart is timeless!
I love Ann she is in my opinion the best female rock vocalist of all time!! Listened to her as a child and will continue to do so. My musical Crush💙
I understand!
She has a better voice than you or any of us could hope to have. Perfection.
Indeed!
Alone. In first time playing i am froze. Realy great song!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Filip!
Ann Wilson is a monster vocalist. One of my favs. The sister is killing it too with her harmony lines. Awesome video.
Rock on!
I love ann Wilson 👌👌💞💞
Me too!
Ann is one of the very few whose voice gives me goosebumps
Literally have goosebumps right now.
Ann is a religious experience 🙌
One of the best, Vala Rising!
Mister Ken Tamplin! It has been less than 24 hours since I have had your course and OH MY GOODNESS. You were not joking around when you said it would rock my world. I already considered myself a very good and experienced singer, but now I realize how much insanely better I can become with your course. In less than 24 hours of using your techniques, my chest range has become larger, I can hit notes and sing songs that I have NEVER been able to, my tone sounds stronger and more professional, and I hit notes with much more accuracy. I have had other teachers, and they were very good, but none can even come close to comparing to you. The way you explain the techniques and demonstrate them have opened a whole new door for me as a singer, and I really cannot be more grateful. For those wondering if the course is worth the 299$, it's not. It's worth a million times more. Please, if you are a singer, it doesn't matter if you're a beginner, advanced, or pro, please take Ken's course, it will LITERALLY change your singing and take it up a thousand notches! You're the best, Ken! Keep Rockin'!
Love hearing that Sean, rock on!! If you'd like, please consider posting your experience with KTVA on one of these sites, I'd sure appreciate it!:

Awesome, been looking forward to another episode of What Makes This Singer Great and Ann Wilson really is a great singer!
She is!
Ann has long been one of my top favorite singers - ever. When I think of Ann I think or powerful soaring soulful vocals. As corny as this may be to say, it's like your ears are rejuvenated! Awesome!
Thanks for listening!
Greatest female rock singer of all times!❤❤❤
Glad to see your subscription numbers increasing. It won't be long before you will have a million. Your hard work is paying off. Keep it up.
I appreciate that, Dan!
One of the greatest female vocalist of all time. Heart was the last concert I went to before COVID.
Absolutely, Angela!
Most driving rock woman vocalist that can never be replaced. Perfect pitch and dynamic range. Powerful stage presence. She could really bring it. He and Nancy harmonies are just hard to beat. They truly were head above all.
Man she's so good. I just love her voice. She gives a hundred percent. Love this song as well ❤️😀👍. Great choice Ken. thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Timothy!
I love that you give such objective critiques.
Heart is fucking amazing...but no one is beyond reproach
Thanks, Brandi! Rock on!
I grew up in the 70's, and female. What I remember about Heart are many things. They were the first rock and roll band, fronted by women, that I knew of, I did follow The Runaways for a bit, but Heart was my favorite. But finding a rock and roll band fronted by women??? Come on, how huge is that? Love Ann's voice. Loved her and Nancy's harmonies. And I love, Dog and the Butterfly.
Not too many, true.
Fanny, ISIS and Les Fleur De Lys with Sharon Tandy were some female fronted rock bands before Heart.
Saw Heart in the mid 80’s. They were just great. They played great Rock n Roll and Ann Wilson can belt with the boys!
She sure can!
I LOVE Ann Wilson! 🙌🏻❤️ I think Powerful. But she doesn't go pedal to the floor all the time. She is dynamic.
Absolutely, Randy!
In my opinion she is in the very top of not only for sure the greatest female rock and roll singer but in my opinion I don't think anybody can really beat her no matter the genre. I've seen them live seven or so times. And I have never been disappointed. It is so amazing that this woman is close to 70 years old and is still out there doing it and is still out there nailing it. I know a lot of people love their rendition of Stairway to Heaven from the Kennedy center honors as did I, but I don't know if people outside of true Heart bands realize they have covered Zeppelin since practically the origin of the band. The last few times that I have seen them live their whole encore set was nothing but Zeppelin. And I know this is not going to be a popular opinion I would rather hear them do what Zeppelin than Zeppelin do Zeppelin.
There's no auto-tune that is just pure amazing talent.
Loved the video you sound of Alone. Whenever I've seen them live, that I can remember anyway I think they've done a more of an acoustic version of Alone. One time that I saw them something funny actually happened it was just an on vocals Nancy playing the acoustic and their keyboard player and Ann completely forgot to do the big belting out part in the middle of the song. Nancy and the keyboard player didn't stop playing but we're looking at her funny and then and realized what she had done and seemed a bit embarrassed and went over to Nancy and they were kind of giggling and whatnot and at the end of the song and asked the crowd oh did you want to hear this and then she did the big bold part acapella.
Thanks for weighing in, Tiff 121!
One of the best bands ever.
For sure!
I think you nailed a lot of what makes her great Ken! Along with her power and vibrato and tone, her dynamics cover the spectrum, from high register belting to soft crooning verses when called for. She is truly my favorite female rock singer.
I am please you think so, Greg!
Agree with your comments. I've seen Heart in just about every decade and Ann and the entire band knock it out of the park every time, no degradation in Ann's power, range, tone.
Power is the one thing I don't think you mentioned. I'd also like to add that their songs are so musical. What I mean is so many bands pound out power chords with little subtlety or nuance. Thieir songs are so well-crafted and satisfying. I'm a keyboard player, not a vocalist but enjoy your vids. Thanks!
Rock on!
I have met Heart many times.... many. (Full shows on my channel !)
In '79 a girlfriend lived near Ann's house in Bellevue (east of Seattle on Lake Washington).
We were invited to a BBQ in Ann's yard with neighbors and friends. Beatle songs and such...
Sat next to her (I had a guitar)... and her voice BLEW MY HAIR ! And now I'm bald. I'm 62... but ! ;-)
Cool! Rock on!
we were lucky enough to see them last summer...epic show!! You can't not sing along to this one :) Thanks again Ken!!
Rock on!
She totally delivers! What I think makes her great is she has a very strong almost masculine energy yet it is very feminine also. The best of both really. I grew up with her music and loved Magic Man and Barracuda so much. Her music can be quite sensuous and I love to sing along because I really get what she is saying and can feel the lyrics. I just wish I could hit all the notes. LOL
👍😀
