They say it was the end of metal era, yet I find so many teenagers today prefer to listen to these than most of todays music. Not only did the words touch our hearts and connected to different situations we might be experiencing in different moments of our lives. But also these crazy haired, usually drunk young kids were musical geniuses! They created magic on stage! The sounds they blended together in perfect harmony. Groups that are rarely compared to except for a few of todays musicians in terms of the feelings and emotions they could instill in their listeners. So may songs today are empty and dense when it comes to words unfourtunatelly. This amazing vocalist really is amazing even today he still can hit crazy notes! Also, it is evident that metal never had an end, though perhaps for a time it moved away from the mainstream and gave way to other new different sounds, it still remained! I have a wide range of music that I enjoy ocasionally from tropical, latin, pop, some reggae and rap. But in my heart, metal lives and thrives! It is my favorite! From lyrics full of meaning to the true admiration for gifted vocalists and just enjoyment of the sounds. Yes I can listen to them all but what I play when I just want to be happy is metal. And though the dont always have long hair and makeup, todays metal groups still have soul and great talent! They have evolved visually but you can tell that their heart is there and they are real! This is why they can be sucessful, because they can connect! Thank you for this video! It was great!
It really wasn't Mike's fault simply those guys came out late in the '80s metal era not enough time on the scene I guess cuz we all know what happened around 92 93
@@rogue1537 I know a lot of younger people who really love the music better too but what happened all of a sudden you didn't even hear it on the radio I want to say by late 92 93 you didn't hear much the Seattle invasion came in . It wasn't overall the end of metal but for that particular style in my opinion the best style. kind of was over.
The lead singer (Michael aka Milli) wrote this as a testament to his love for his then fiance and soon after wife. there are songe you like. and love. then theres songs like this that go into your playlist . his voice is otherworldly. hide your glassware.
Saw them in a small club in Tucson back in the 90's and he absolutely hit every note. Crazy good. My #2 just barely edged out by Geoff Tate "Operation Mindcrime" live.
He's the heavy metal Mariah Carey. Only, instead of just "Whistling", he actually annunciates words in the higher register. Listen to "Can't Stop Me Loving You". Also, a song that'll bring a tear to your eye is their song "Mama Don't You Cry". (studio version, not the shortened live acoustic version)
There's no one on this planet like Mili! Ridiculously underrated band if not THE most underrated. I love that he still tours and is pretty active on social media.
I am floored every time I see and hear footage of Miljenko. I swear he is superhuman .. lol. Such a tight band, too ! Then YOU pop in there with the range and Im sent reeling AGAIN ! LOL - just love your channel!
The Bible states that all the angels were gifted with voices that were musical instruments... paraphrasing, to sing praise to glory... anyways, I believe that several out of a gazillion actually screwed around and dropped their voices to earth and as we have witnessed through time, those voices landed on children that grew up and used those gifts to bless mankind... and tell me who does not need blessings! Love you Ken. You are an inspiration to all and I love all of your audience that makes it so you carry on with these works. God bless❤
It's very easy to sing flat live due to the vocalist's ability to hear accurate pitch. It varies from venue to venue. Stage monitors and acoustics often deceive the ear. I've often encountered this phenomenon as a lead singer and, up until in-ear monitors became popular, I would often intentionally sing sharp a cent or two in order to counter this problem. Even playing lead guitar and bass can be difficult without good monitor representation that cuts through the venue's reflective acoustics.
The timing of this song was just wrong, had it come out in 1987, instant smash! 1990 was already the emerging of grunge and the last days of glam metal.
Ken Tamplin, I am soooo happy to followed up the flat notes comment with how he is in the top 10 percentile. Miljenko Matijevic is unbelievable and he was unbelievable in this performance too. Keep in mind that most of us couldn't even hear anything flat about it, maybe guy's like you who are in the industry can hear it, but, not us average music junkies !
Thanks Ken. Love his voice. I think this was on that Rick Dees show back then. Everybody loves Eileen was performed as well, and was awesome. Love your selections for these.
Steelheart, I remember the first time I heard this song, blew me away and after all these years still does. I still find myself singing along (in the privacy of my own home or car as I don't want to scare people).
Yeah he was right in there with a handful rock/metal signers of the time that had an incredible range and sang songs like there was no tomorrow. These guys (Axl Rose, Dale Thompson Sebastian Bach, Mike Matijevic, Michael Sweet) were so incredible in the vocal delivery that no one could ever truly fill in for them if/when they couldn't make a concert due to illness/injury etc, other than perhaps, if one of the guys of this same handful were to fill in for each other which most definitely would have been interesting but unfortunately we were never lucky enough to have seen such as thing. 80's/90's metal was the last musical genre that lent itself perfectly to be the vehicle through which to showcase the vocal abilities, prowess, fireworks and passion of the male voice at its peak.
I always loved his voice! It's a shame with what happened to him,but at least he made it out alive. His beautiful voice suffered horribly after that. The important part is that he is a survivor!
Steelheart later released an album with a song on it called “We all die young”. Though it was post-accident, he still blew it away. That’s a killer song, and if anyone hasn’t heard it, they need to.
A band that really could've kept 80's style music dominating while going through the 90's, had it not been for that rigging accident. They were great performers and his vocals were truly amazing.
I gotta say. I love how you can hit the same notes as a highly regarded singer 20 years ago when he was young and In his peak . Cold in the studio without a warm up ken. You are such a talented singer. I mean I know you are aware of this but sometimes it takes me by surprise !
today is the first time I have seen or heard of Steelheart..... unbelievable!!! they were fantastic!! I agree ken they didnt get no where near the recognition they deserved!! I am still having a hard time believing he got that high with his notes lol!
Love steelheart very underrated band as you stated ken. When i saw the title i got all excited. After you reacted to she's gone i was hoping you'd react to this song. I can actually hit that note right along with him while singing it and my friends would always be like dang how do you hit that note like that that's awesome and i always respond with idk why dont you ask the person who created me lol anyways killer performance even though a little pitchy at the beginning he still rocked the house with that phenomenal voice of his. And great reaction as always keep on rockin ken 🎸
Hi Ken first i'm your fan you are the greatest performer and teacher . I love Steelheart it's one of my best band and for me Mike it's the best singer i have listen in my life , i play music of many years in a cover rock band and at home have a collection of ...i don't remember exactly 4500 CD to hard rock , hair metal, heavy ecc... but Mike voice it's extraordinary an alien , thank's a lot for your video , enjoi music and a big hug.
Dood is a one of a kind with a voice like that.. Had some pitch problems but i agree.. it's a symptom of not being able to hear yourself .. Dood is a total pro and a total rockstar.. and in my opinion , at the end of the day>> he absolutely sang his ass off right there.. and at a very high level.. My absolute Respect to him and the gift he was born with...
He got hit in the head by a steel light stand that fell during a performance in the 90s & he had to learn to sing all over again. He was nearly killed. That set them back plus grunge was taking over the music scene shortly after they first came out.
Steelheart is such an Amazing Band and the vocals are Awesome and this band SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED FOR HOW AWESOME THEY ARE💯‼️‼️‼️🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻🎤🤘🏻🥁💯❤️🥰🌹💋💋💋💋💋 THEY DESERVE IT AND THE VOCALS ARE OUTSTANDING👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻LOUDER PLEASE📣📣📣📣📣
Man, since I discovered Milly a fee years after "Rockstar" came out, Steelheart has been one of my all time favorite bands. They've got some great songs out. The range Milly has is spectacular. He's definitely in that top 1% in the world. Even though this performance may or may not have been his best, you still have to give it to him, he's still hitting some extremely high notes in there. Like you said, there are a lot of factors that you have to look at when watching a live performance. I personally think he was probably just tired after touring. That's my two cents. Either which way, Milly is the best!!!
I love steelheart and I love this song this one and she's gone are my Two favorites yes this is live hes a little pitchy starting out Ken did you notice that love how he goes into the high note that's awesome hes great live little pitchy but great for the most part he sounds great on this so yea he was flat and pitchy but you can't sound great all the time in every performance but anyways I love steelheart love their songs one of my favorites pretty good performance not the best but ok Ken he's still awesome though good reaction
Perfect! I was just listening to this song and thought - I need to ask Ken to do a video on this; I’d like to hear what he thinks about this vocal technique. And here it is, already done. Yay!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy I was listening to the studio version, but I was noticing how he goes up in volume a lot when he switches from head voice to falsetto. He does certainly seem to have good breath control and I think the choice is probably deliberate. But do you think it is a little jarring? I had a vocal coach in college who worked with me on evening out the passagio and moving between registers smoothly and without a change in volume or drastic jump in tone. So that’s what I’m thinking of. I wonder if you can comment on the technique he’s using to switch from falsetto to head voice to chest voice. Thanks!
Ken, this is Will, my other channel was canceled for telling the truth. I wasn't particularly PC about it, but that's what happens when you're raised by cops and green berets and you spend six years with the Airborne Light Infantry - reckless abandon and all ... You're still the only singer I've heard that can sing Milijenkos songs as well as he can, but your students are badass! Thanks a bunch for sharing your talents with us, guys, what a blessing to have grown up in this nation during its finest hours. Hopefully, there are many more of those to come.
Okay... Hope u don't think I'm weird Mr. Tamplin but sometimes I just watch your videos to hear you speak lol. Your voice is relaxing. You could do voice acting or something :)
Someone I've never seen you cover is Tony Harnell from TNT. Absolutely one of the best studio and live vocalists ever. I've seen him live in a small club in NYC, in front of his monitor and he was actually louder than it was. For a small guy, he has incredible power. Anything of Intuition would be good to cover. 🤟🎙🎶
let you gooooooooo thats right Ken i do it everytime lol i love listening to him just killl that line!!!! and all the other extremely insane notes he does
He's just unreal!! Amazing! One moment, imo, that shows how versatile he is, is a moment in the song Say No More, that he does 2 vocal tracks in paralel, one very low and one some octaves above, with a killer drive! GENIUS!! So sad he didn't get nearly the recognition he deserves!
Also... they might have done a lot of gigs around this time in a row or with little breaks. I don't know, but damn... he did do some amazing performances, and singing like that over a few gigs has to take its toll. Love Steelheart though. Was blown away when I first discovered them years back. Still am. Amazing. :D.
I think Mark Slaughter should be one of the next ones featured. Incredible range and a very unique sound, with a lot to be learned as far as do’s and dont’s are concerned when it comes to distortion technique.
Omg! That there are some gorgeous vocals! 🔥🔥🔥 I actually happen to love all the little flaws and nuances in the live performances vs studio versions! 😘
I would love a video on how to sing in the manor Elvis did for his rock songs like Jailhouse Rock, there aren't really videos on this and impersonators use a stereotype when singing it rather than the way he actually sang it originally.
Timing was everything when this band"s CD was released and this particular song made it to MTV. I remember it being a popular song on MTV. and the singer is definitely as good-looking as Jon bon Jovi was. but the timing as I remember I bought the CD that this song was on back in the late 80s. By 1990 the rock landscape shift was becoming more apparent and bands like Steelheart were being left in the dust. It was unfortunate though I do like this style of music a lot. I hated to see it go.
There was also a proliferation of those bands coming out back then. I remember when Steelheart hit with this song. Spring of 91... But there was Trixter, Southgang, Firehouse, Pretty Boy Floyd, etc, etc. Wasn't long after that Nirvana hit, and wiped all these bands out. At the time I was pissed, and absolutely hated that grunge stuff.. These days I can appreciate it, but the hard rock from the late 80's will always, always be meaningful to me.
Nice job as always. This guy is still that good of a singer to this day. I have a suggestion. How about winger-headed-for-a-heartbreak.. Very powerful vocal performance by Kip Winger on that one!
so, i learned about steelheart from your channel and cover of "she's Gone" . I just saw a concert line up for our county fair and Steelheart are gonna be there! lol . now I'm excited to see this guy perform in person!
Unreal vocal range. Always loved him. Unless I have missed it, I am surprised you have never talked about Michael Sweet from Stryper. He had some serious vocal range as well!
Such a phenomenal voice, I was always upset that they never got the recognition they deserved. That voice is a true blessing!!!
Well said, Jeff!

Also Bon Jovi and Guns & Roses took the attention away from this band
I'm only 17 and I love Steelheart. Oh I love this song.
😊
You'll love Winger then...baddum tsssh
Thank your parents for raising you with great music.
Uh..can we all just appreciate how he sounded just like Miljenko when explaining that initial high note.
Ken, I didn't realize you had that range. I'm impressed.
When he sings this song I’m flooded in chills 💚
Haha! I know!
I was fortunate to see Steelheart just a few months ago and Mili is still an absolutely stunning vocalist!
😊
I remember when this came out. It blew my mind. I agree. Very overlooked!!
Yes, the were definitely derailed with the accident. Really too bad!
I absolutely loved them! And I agree they definitely didn’t get the accolades they deserved at the time!! Stellar voice!
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
This Steelheart album is one of the best in my life. Great songs. Great band.
Mattheus Augusto Felipe 👍
Back in the day he was drinking and smoking through the whole show and still hit everything. He is perfect!
Thanks for watching!

Cool, Thomas!
To me he had the best hard rock vocals in the biz, I have all their records. That accident he had was devastating but he came back after a while.
He did! 😊
Nope, midnight from crimson glory did
he's tired

it's probally a concert in south korea. he and his band are mega stars there.

I totally agree with you and even hearing him live now he is doing such a killer job and obviously still practice with his voice.
So great to hear he can still bring it.
Absolutely ! Not to mention you were hitting some high notes with him great job Ken Tamplin !!!
This voice is TRULY. A gift from GOD❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The timing of this song was just wrong, had it come out in 1987, instant smash!
1990 was already the emerging of grunge and the last days of glam metal.
😀👍
I don't care about the timing of the song release. It's amazing, his voice is amazing, and I love it every time I listen to it! Love Steelheart!
agreed they had it all
Ken I think people expect singers to sound like they sound in the studio. This is live and it still sounds awesome..
I think you're right. Many a concert goer has had a rude surprise when they find the singer can't, actually, sing. Thanks for the visit, Dave!
@@kentamplin yes. I’ve either been blown away after unexpectedly better vocals or disappointing vocals.

This was probably one of my all time favorites growing up. I was born in 79, so it was the time of epic bands. Love the 90's.
👍😀🎤

I always loved his voice! It's a shame with what happened to him,but at least he made it out alive. His beautiful voice suffered horribly after that. The important part is that he is a survivor!

I saw Steelheart a few years ago and Mili still sounds amazing. Honestly, I don't know why he never got the recognition he so definitely deserves.

Great singer and the looks to match!
A PA rig crushed his face and he had to recouperate for several years. Look up the video, he keeps singing with a fractured skull like a trooper

😊
Omg! That there are some gorgeous vocals! 🔥🔥🔥
I actually happen to love all the little flaws and nuances in the live performances vs studio versions! 😘
AP S 👍👍👍
I would love a video on how to sing in the manor Elvis did for his rock songs like Jailhouse Rock, there aren't really videos on this and impersonators use a stereotype when singing it rather than the way he actually sang it originally.
Thanks for the suggestion, John!
The Official video is EPIC!
Indeed!
😊
😊
Very nice and enthisiastic reaction from Ken...Love that! Keep it up!
Thank you, Erik!
Wow!!! You sound just like him when you sing. What a "set of pipes " ya got there.
😀👍
He's got the greatest hair vocs of all time. This song is especially meaningful to me...as I WROTE IT, on my banjo.
man, i miss the 80's so much
💜
so, i learned about steelheart from your channel and cover of "she's Gone" . I just saw a concert line up for our county fair and Steelheart are gonna be there! lol . now I'm excited to see this guy perform in person!
Great! Let us know how it goes.
Yes! I waited for this!
Yay!!!
Possibly the most underrated rock vocalist of all time
That delay relay really helps thicken up his voice
Saw this gezza in Nottingham England in 2016, totally stole the show. Nailed it
No one pointed out the fact that you are sitting there hitting all those notes flawlessly ..Ken...you are awesome
😊
Unreal vocal range. Always loved him. Unless I have missed it, I am surprised you have never talked about Michael Sweet from Stryper. He had some serious vocal range as well!
