  • Welcome to Bonita's Kitchen! Today we will be making SLOW COOKED BOILED DINNER. This is a easy was to cook this tasty meal and have the day off!!! Also called Sunday Dinner and Jiggs Dinner!!! See recipe below!!
See our Jiggs Dinner recipe on this link:
    Jiggs Dinner in Pastries: www.bonitaskitchen.com/recipe...
See Brining Pork Ribs and Beef! www.bonitaskitchen.com/recipe...
To view & download the full recipe, please view it here on our website:
    www.bonitaskitchen.com
    Our cookbook link: www.bonitaskitchen.com/cookbook
    Ingredient’s
    4 potatoes ¼ cabbage
    ½ turnip 2 carrots
    1 parsnip 1 piece salted beef ( optional )
    1 small onion
    Method:
Peel and put all veggies in a bowl of cold water, let soak for a few minutes or just toss veggies in it to clean any dirt off. In another bowl of cold water soak salted beef to remove some salt for ½ hour or overnight, then drain and cut it in chucks, you can part cook it first in a pot of hot water and then drain more liquid off to remove more salt……keep the salt beef water just incase you need a little more added to the slow cooker….. then add to the slow cooker including the water.
You will need a SLOW COOKER! See Jiggs Dinner video for cooking on the stove top!!
Start by adding raw or part cooked salted beef to the bottom of the slow cooker, then add peeled onion cut in half, then layer the other veggie..
Cabbage, turnip, carrot, potato and last parsnip…this veggie is optional if you don’t like or have access.
Put water in your kettle and boil, add to slow cooker ¾ way up, leaving ¼ ways from the top so it don’t boil over. But have the potatoes fully covered so they don’t turn brown….You can use the salt beef hot water to the slow cooker instead of hot kettle water….
You can use vegetable broth if you don’t use salted beef in this recipe!!! Plus 1 teaspoon of sea salt!!!
Put lid on the slow cooker and place on the counter and aways from anything for safety. Put the dial on LOW and cook for 6 to 8 hours while at work or home relaxing….
When ready to serve veggies, make a quick gravy and serve with a rotisserie chicken or left over roast or chicken from last nights supper.
    QUICK GRAVY:
2 tbsp of butter 2 tbsp flour
2 cups veggie broth from slow cooker 1 tbsp chicken oxo or bouillon
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce or gravy browning
    Method:
On a medium stovetop heat in a frying pan add butter, let melt for a few seconds then add flour. When melted with a whisk or spoon mix flour around pan until it looks like a paste.
Then add veggie broth, Worcestershire sauce or gravy browning, chicken oxo or beef bouillon keep mixing until gravy is a nice silky thick texture.
Serve hot and with or with out gravy…..enjoy
I apologize in advance if anything in this video is not clear or misread, please follow my recipe when making this dish.

Dear Bonita and Raymond, I use those vegetables in my "root soup" and they are fantastic when cooked together; the broth is sweet from the parsnips. I also add turnip and rutabaga. On another note, I made cupcakes from your ginger cake recipe and LOVED them; thank you for putting ginger in the frosting...I never thought of that! Love, Bonnie and David

Hi my New Fundland friends. You had me when I saw the title "Boiled dinner". I absolutely love it....your kitchen smells wonderful. I would wear some perfume made of that lovely smell, but then I would have to swat all the men away.😂 one more vegetable I would add is rutabaga even though turnips are similar. Ten toes up on this one Bonita.

Merry Christmas Bonita and Raymond! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! I've learned how to make so many wonderful meals thanks to you.
Thank you so much for this. I'm a Newfoundlander living in Toronto and a traditional Newfoundland cooked dinner is my favourite meal. I tried doing it in the slow cooker before, but it turned out horribly. My mistake was using the slow cooker the way you normally would with only a little liquid at the bottom as slow coking retains most of the liquid you put in. I never thought to submerge all the vegetables in liquid. I can't wait to try it!! I just wish I could find salt beef or salt riblets here; nothing makes the vegetables taste as good as when they're cooked with salt beef!

Hi and thank you so much for stopping by on Christmas Eve!! Slow cooking can be funny and sometime not what you expect. But having a recipe to follow and time on your hands and you will do amazing. So sorry you can't find any salted beef there, maybe try making your own next year and we have a recipe to follow. It's not the same as the buckets of salted beef from home but it do taste good. ua-cam.com/video/VGUwVR5gZeI/v-deo.htmlsi=dpZhCVreXJmWtQQI From our kitchen to yours have a Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Years. thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe - crockpots are the best. I just made some oxtails and veggies in mine on 8 hours low heat. Came out fall-off-the-bone tender and moist. Great video! My whole family is from the eat coast and we grew up on boiled dinners. Never had gravy on it though, I don’t think my parents soaked the meat either, so it was pretty salty (in a good way). My mom would also make dumplings in it and we would put molasses on them after eating dinner.

Since I don't have electricity if I don't feel like cooking and watching a boiled dinner on my stove I place everything into a roasting pan on my gas grill on top of a pizza stone with the burners on low.
I let it cook for 2 or 3 hours.
We like to use smoked sausage, ham or whatever meat we have on hand.
I quarter the cabbage but leave the core attached, this keeps the cabbage in one spot and you're not chasing pieces around the pan

    • @bonitaskitchen
      @bonitaskitchen  3 місяці тому

Hi Jack: Thank you for your message and for stopping by....I've never cook peas pudding in the slow cooker or ninja pressure cooker. I'm thinking maybe the slow cooker can work but the pressure cooker it may not work. The peas always release a lot of foam and gas while cooking and you need to let that release and make sure it don't foam over the pot. So for those reasons I'm thinking it can't be done. But maybe one of our viewers can answer your question for me, they may have cooked it that way before. This is a lovely meal!! Enjoy Bonita

    • @bonitaskitchen
      @bonitaskitchen  2 місяці тому

Sorry Jack I just seen your message. I don't have a video tutorial done but I do have my sister Pauline's recipe I can share with you. Enjoy Bonita BAKED TURR’s
      RECIPE:
      2 Turr’s
      1 Onion
      1 Full orange “ optional “
1/2 tsp Sea salt or less
      1/2 tsp Pepper or less
      2 cups water or broth
      Method:
Roaster with grate with lid, to place turr’s on top, this will catch oil dipping’s….
      350ºf F until the internal temp is 165 °F (73.9 °C).
Clean and dry turr’s with paper towels well, put the full orange inside cavity and place on top of roaster and grate.
Add 2 cups of water or broth to roaster, peel and chop a medium onion put some inside cavity and in roaster.
Top with sea salt and pepper to taste, cover with lid for the first hour of baking. Cook until the internal temperature is 165 °F (73.9 °C).
Then remove lid and base the turr’s with the dippings, the dippings are oily but basting the turr’s will brown skin and add favour.
The dipping from the turr’s will be oily but if you pour the dippings in to a bowl after the turr’s are baked and place in freezer or fridge to cool you will be able to remove the fat and make a gravy out of the broth.
This recipe is my sister Pauline’s and she likes the flavour of the orange in the meat but it is optional if you are going to make a gravy.

Hi Gary!! I don't like crunchy cabbage and having the cabbage put down into the slow cooker with the salted beef will soften really good. Of course this meal is slow cooked and keeping it for 6 to 8 hours over a work day. Will cook all your veggies good. But if you are cooking it on the stove top after one and half hours cooking your cabbage will fall apart.....I hope you get to watch all our video and get to make your meal this way next time...Enjoy to the fullest! Merry Christmas :) Bonita

One minute it was pork, the next it was beef, then you called it ribs, then it was pork, then it was beef - My head was spinning - I have no idea what meat that was.

Hi and thank you for your message and for stopping by...here in Newfoundland Labrador we have a brining recipe for salt beef or pork ribs. This is the link. So I jump all over the place because the option is to use salt beef or pork ribs if you wish...or just leave it out all together and use a teaspoon of sea salt to salt to pot water..... I hope this clears up any confusion I may have cost and enjoy to the fullest!! Bonita www.bonitaskitchen.com/recipe/brining-pork-riblets-or-beef-traditional-newfoundland/#google_vignette
