Hi Dear 💕. fabulous video . Your stirring my memories of home and family. Talk about a meal stretcher. Mama would get 3 meals out of a boil dinner. after the split pea soup just maybe we'd get a hash. Joe taught me a couple of tricks, such as onion powder and that ham seasoning. I'm a big fan of "Better than Bouilion " which makes one for ham. nice slice of home. made bread and a piece of pie. Cooling Finally down here. time for a good old New England Boil Dinner. So glad your sharing great traditions. Wonderful Video. cute guy too and I like his shirt. when we have supper and say grace we mention our friends in Blaine, Me.
Oh Diana! My sweet friend! Such a word is home, isn't it? We live in our homes, yet our hearts always look back on those fond memories and call them home, too. Pea soup hash is one of Joe's favorites.
We feel so blessed to have formed such a friendship with you, and keep you close, both in our hearts and in our prayers. 🙏💞
Yup and I make a vegetable hash with my leftovers and have buttered bread with it. 😋
I'm drooling now! 🤤
I love New England boiled dinner. My dear Mom used to make it for us when I was little. We also make something very similar with corned beef. Both of those dinners are so hearty and delicious!! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Cathy! We also like to make it with corned beef, but usually around St. Patrick's day. Have a fabulous week!
Grew up with this Sunday dinner after church many a Sunday. Mom always used a bone-in ham. She didn’t use rutabaga, but did use chopped leafy celery ends and a bay leaf or two. Ham soup based didn’t exist back then but a canning jar of bacon grease was always in the fridge and served the same purpose. Any leftover ham was repurposed all week and went into Great Northern Baked Beans or Great Northern Bean soup. Also Ham was finely ground and mixed into a delicious Ham Sandwich Spread. And chunks of ham also found it’s way into scalloped potatoes and ham. She was a child of the Great Depression and nothing went to waste and every meal was delicious and served with homemade bread.
Mmm! These are the sweet memories of life! Thank you so much for sharing them with me. They are so heartwarming! ❤
This is how I make my corned beef dinner.I never made it with ham. Yum!Split pea soup is so good.Great idea turning left overs into that.I always freeze my ham bones just to make it.
Thank you! Yes!! Freeze the bone for later! 🤗
This looks like such a heartwarming, wholesome, delicious meal. Have never had a meal like the one you've prepared, but I could almost taste the flavors just by watching Joe fix and serve the meal. Thank you for sharing !
Thank you Charlotte! ❤️
My dear Mom used to make this a lot. She used corned beef in place of the ham sometimes. It really warms you up on a cold winter's night!!! I haven't made it in years since it's just me here. But yours looks so good I think I'll make it again. New subscriber from Ohio here. So glad to have found your channel!
Thank you Cathy! Welcome to my family of keepers! 💞
Maybe you can make a small one, with enough for leftovers, or maybe invite a friend to dinner. I'm so happy to meet you! 🤗❤
Hi from south Australia, this is a meal I am very familiar with. My Mother used to cook this recipe in her pressure cooker as do I. The ham is tender but importantly the vegetables retain their vitamins and are not lost in a longer cooking time.
So happy to meet you Gillian! You are so right! 🤗❤
My children call it “boiled to death” ham and we love it!
😂🤣 That's hilarious!
This is a meal that I didn`t grow up with but looking forward to cook it this weekend, 🥰 I love that you can make 2 meals out of it. Never had split pea soup but wanted to make it for some time now. You both enjoy the rest of your day. Lot`s of love from all of us! 🌻
Thank you! I think it will become a favorite for you! Much love and blessings to you my friend! ❤️
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome Thank you, friend. 🌺I think that too. 🥰
Definitely grew up with it and always make pea soup after! I’m interested in the ham soup base!!
Hi Paula! We buy the base at the Amish store on the Bangor Road in Easton. $4.95 for a 12 oz. container. 🥰
Yummy 😋
My grandmother served this dish often. I don’t remember rutabagas but definitely will add them. Tasty!!
What a great memory for you. Yes! Try the rutabaga! 😃
A standard Sunday winter dinner in Connecticut many moons ago.
Dear goodness that looks so delicious. I will be making this. Thanks
Thank you! I'd love to hear how you like it. 😊
Never had it but like all the ingredients !! My DNA shows I'm 16% Irish . Mostly English and some Scotland. We like rutabagas !!
I think you'll like this! 😉😊
It looks delicious !!
Looks yummmmmmy 🥰
One of my favorite meals! I make ham and scalloped potatoes with my left over ham. Never had split pea soup. Would love to see your recipe for it!
Thank you, Ginger! 😊
im from the east coast of canada , called Newfoundland , also an irish settled place , and we have this boiled dinner aswell , just a little diffrent
We are just across the New Brunswick border. Hello neighbor!
My mother was born and raised near Quebec.
I love rutabaga I cut in half then cut again and then peel
Looks good
Thank you!
We add Portuguese sausage to ours…. Linguica or chourico.
Sounds delicious! My husband loves chourico!! ❤️
What do you do with all that broth. Surely it's too tasty and nutritious to just throw away. I'm thinking maybe boiling up a nice split pea or a cream of potato and leek?
Yes! Split pea soup! 😃 It most always follows a boiled dinner. Yum!
Think you need a bigger kettle.
😁❤
That IS a pre cooked ham, right?
Yes! 😁 A smoked shoulder is the best cut to use to make this. ❤
No corned beef?
We normally have corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's day. A New England boiled dinner is a traditional dinner we make using root vegetables during the cold winter months here in Northern New England. A smoked ham shoulder is the best cut to use in a boiled dinner. Writing this is making me hungry! 😁
