First off, I find the thesis of this video---that Punch-Out defined the concept of "boss fight" for generations to come---very interesting considering that while Punch-Out is this unique game that doesn't quite fit into genre categories, boss fights seem to litter almost ever kind of game, occasionally popping up even in genres ill-suited to them, like puzzle games. Secondly, and it might be a bit too early in the series ask this... how do you feel about Super Punch Out and Punch Out Wii? With such a groundbreaking act to follow, do they really compare? Punch-Out Wii is excellent. Its animation is exceptional, it has the most content thanks to having the greatest variety of boxers, having a new one, and having refights for everyone except Donkey Kong, it keeps the gameplay incredibly faithful and even improves it in some ways (I like how Bear Hugger teaches you the duck, for example, that was always a bit underutilized in Mike Tyson's). Super Punch-Out's not bad, but it's a different kind of game entirely, more in line with what the arcade games were. I personally greatly prefer the emphasis on puzzle-like elements that Mike Tyson's and Wii provide, but if you want a more action-forward title then it can be a good time. Ah yes the prequel to Shadow of the Colossus. Or is it a demake? Either way, I've actually never played a Punch Out game in my life, only watched friends and it's always a hype time no matter what. To have something as simple as boxing become this interwoven, complicated and well designed puzzle and reaction game (especially as early as it came out) is masterful. Stoked for this series! (Too bad Mac still sucks in SSBU though...)
To be honest, there’s not one bad Punch Out boxer. Every character from Glass Joe to Mr Sandman have such great appeal and do such a great job at training the player in their own ways, there’s not one that I hate.
And the only generic, forgettable, mediocre boxer in the franchise (the Irish guy from one of the arcade games) got a _very_ distinct identity in Punch Out Wii: Becoming a dirty cheater who breaks basically every rule possible.
Glass Joe actually beat me in my first several matches against him. I beat him a few times with body blows alone only to get stumped on the following boss before I found out the controls for uppercutting, LOL.
@@MeepMacArthur Once I learned how to consistently beat Glass Joe, I never once had an issue with Von Kaiser. I didn't even know Von Kaiser had a gimmick for how you're supposed to beat him until watching this video (or most of the other early game guys). I didn't notice anything special about how I fought anyone between Glass Joe and King Hippo, and have still never once thrown a Star Punch.
The SNES Super Punch-Out was a really awesome game. I dunno about the Wii version, and I never really played the NES one, but I had a lot of fun with the SNES one. Such a variety of fights, each having their own list of 'things' about them, and they kept the comedic relief from the first and jacked it up to 11 with utter silliness, but yet still made it work, and there were a variety of ways that once you got good at the game you could have fun just wrecking its fighters. Aran Ryan hates being nailed with super punches and says your little punches can't faze him. Oh really? I've found that a couple speed punch barrages will stun him and cause him to wobble about. THEN he gets the big punch and he goes down like a sack of potatoes, for example.
The thing is, not a lot of people do this at all. I’ve tried to get my friends to try and play this and they didn’t even attempt to meet the game at it’s level and just kept complaining that there’s no tutorial after wondering why just literally punching isn’t working.
Nice analysis. It's hard as we play many generations of games to relive the feeling of experiencing games for the first time. The best games of yesteryear capitalize on the core concepts that still makes game's enjoyable today.
I want to see a sequel to Punch Out where a retired Little Mac trains a new upcoming Boxer or goes back into the ring to prove he still has the Star Punch in him.

Me losing INTENTIONALLY 3 times for game over to have joe's record 4-99
You know this man will blow up one day. I'm subbin' in early before 10k
Lots of love and effort was put into this series. Heres hoping the algorithm favors you more
Punch-Out is such an underrated series that it makes me sad. Punch out is my favorite Nintendo game and its sad that it doesn't get the attention and love it deserves
*insert super punch out*
some of the best thumbnails on youtube for this punch out mini series, far more appelling than anything else you’ve made
I wanna hear all of Punch Out narrated by you
HEY FELLAS, WOULDNT YOU BELIEVE IT? THERES MORE!
This made me appreciate the deigns on those games a lot more
We’re never gonna let that Pokémon jelly filled donuts thing die aren’t we
This is legit the best video I've seen in so long it's so well written and formatted
God i love the punch out series. The charm of every character is just great
Yes kirb
I know this is painfully off topic but made me really happy to see a Hajime no Ippo clip tossed in there
What i like about these characters is they are all so different from eachother. And they're all absolutely hilarious in the wii version.
This is literally one of my favourite videos on UA-cam
11:12 pretty funny that he uses that picture if you know what the next one is in the game.
So excited for this series!!!!!
5:05 If I could give you a second like for the Scott Pilgrim reference,I would. 10:17 AND the Hajime no Ippo reference too! Fuck it Im sharing this to facebook more people gotta see this!
The one game which made thousands of people capable of honestly saying "i beat Mike Tyson at his own game"
Wow this is exactly what I wanted to watch. Im working on a punch out style game and its neat to see someone else disect the game without being boring!
10:36 And THAT signified the beginning of speedrunning Mike Tyson's Punch-Out...
13:11 I love donuts! Especially the jelly filled kind. Nothing beats a jelly filled donut
I love how punch out makes the boss seem impossible until you beat it, then it becomes easy. Really sharp learning curve, until it clicks and you get the patterns. I'm on bald bull 2 atm but I know I'll beat mike someday.
The amount of views this has frightens me.
the croissants got me, I laughed a little too hard when they flew upwards
7:46 woah woah I like candy corns please put them in my donuts
Ah you beat the french out of em
godzilla is my dad
No more peanuts for me, stewardess
*OH YOU BEAT THE F R E N C H OUTTA HIM*
My favorite color is 7
Ah yes the prequel to Shadow of the Colossus.
@@RoninCatholicAran Ryan.
I'm surprised that Mac's ears are still intact after the Tyson bout.
i paused at 14:33 and it sounded like you said "piston honda is a box"
Glass Joe actually beat me in my first several matches against him. I beat him a few times with body blows alone only to get stumped on the following boss before I found out the controls for uppercutting, LOL.
I find him harder than von kaiser for some reason 😂
@@MeepMacArthur Once I learned how to consistently beat Glass Joe, I never once had an issue with Von Kaiser. I didn't even know Von Kaiser had a gimmick for how you're supposed to beat him until watching this video (or most of the other early game guys). I didn't notice anything special about how I fought anyone between Glass Joe and King Hippo, and have still never once thrown a Star Punch.
7:10 I lost to title defence glass joe more times than all the worlds circuit fighters combined...
Watched this twice already, but ima watch it again to help me beat punch out for my first time
(7:25) France being a coward, isn't that just a US view of things? Well, the game is developed in Japan, but they have some US influences of things.
It's the British who came up with those jokes, so...
and spaniards use them too
I think it's just everyone on the globe in general.

Really nice work and analysis! After so many decades, the 1st time approach to this one is 100% lost on the classic gamers like myself.
8:23 it's always wild to me to see my shitty art from the mid 2000's appear without warning in a youtube video.
I discovered the star upper cut cause mi mom called me to dinner and i tried to pause the game

Eh Eh Long Live France!
Weeeowoooooooooo (thump)

I just realized that having a DS punchout game would’ve been amazing
"Honda. Was built to last."

Better yet, I'd love to see a prequel to Punch Out Wii where you play as Doc Louis in his prime.
I know this video is 4 years old but I have to make a correction: the NES can also do 8x16 sprites, not just 8x8
Karen: I don't need to vaccinate my child, HES FINE!

I never learned how to block, and just took a knockdown everytime the Honda Rush came.
Love the way you structured this video and the delivery is awesome subbed
