- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1990 boxing game for the NES, Punch-Out!!
Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! ( • Mike Tyson's Punch-Out... ) was huge when it hit the NES in the fall of 1987, and it had staying power. It was still in print and selling well three years after its initial debut, and to meet the demand, Nintendo was preparing another production run for the summer of 1990.
But this time, since Nintendo's contract with Mike Tyson had recently expired, they removed his likeness from the game and shortened the title to Punch-Out!! "The Legendary" Mr. Dream, with his cheesy grin and off-puttingly sallow skin, takes over in Iron Mike's stead. He's not a new fighter, though. His bio may say that he's from Dreamland and that he has a 99-0 record, but he's really just a white (and thus legally distinct, presumably) Mike Tyson. All of their moves, patterns, animations, and dialogue are identical.
I didn't want this video to be a mere rehash of my playthrough of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, so I decided to challenge myself with a goal that would force me to learn the game better.
I wanted to find out if it was possible to win every fight with a KO. It took a fair bit to learn how to wear the fighters down without TKOing them, and it's much harder playing like this, but I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of how much fun I had figuring out Punch-Out strategies as a kid.
I almost managed a clean sweep, but I couldn't figure out how to KO Great Tiger and Bald Bull in the Major Circuit. Still, I was pretty happy with being able to nail down twelve of the fourteen fights, and I liked how the slower pace allowed me to show many of the between round chats.
"Let's keep it clean! Now come out boxing!"

Punch-Out is awesome, with or without Mike.
I think the gameplay still holds up to this day. I can't think any other fighting game that actively punishes you for not deciphering boss patterns and just spamming buttons to win.
Mike Tyson or Mr. Dream is not the thing that comes to mind when I think of Punch Out. Just the sheer fun of dodging and countering at the right time is what I love about this game.
Without Mike Tyson not Punch-Out!! 😢😢
I know most people would prefer to play against Mike just because he's such a legend. But if you live in Europe, the Mike Tyson version actually is a lot better because the Mr Dream version is not properly PAL optimized. Only the music is but the gameplay is too slow, and not only can it lead to problems like dodging too early, but also annoying things like the opponent intros not being in sync with the music. There are also some small sound improvements in the original PAL version that are all gone in the Mr Dream version.
@@Thelodis Sounds like Nintendo of Europe rushed the Mr. Dream version out the door. Yikes.
Appearance of Mario as a boxing ref is awesome! 😊
Mario is basically the Nintendo version of Barbie. In the past 40 years since his inception, he's been a plumber, a chef, a doctor, a sports/olympic athlete, a pilot... You name it, he's probably done it at some point.

I'm 50 years old and I loved playing this game as a kid
What memories of this game. 52 years old now and love this game so much. Classic!
Im young and I like playing arcade games and nes games, Carries on!
0:40: “(cue ‘Superstar’ by The Carpenters) Back on Christmas Night 1987, a 17-year-old named Little Mac shocked the boxing world by upsetting the undefeated Super Macho Man, ending his 35-0 run and taking the WVBA Heavyweight Championship of the World from the Hollywood native. But now, a new challenger has emerged, and his name is the legendary Mr. Dream. With an undefeated record of 99-0, Mr. Dream has racked up win after win after win after win after win after win after win after win after win after win. Tonight, Mr. Dream looks to kick off 1988 in grand fashion as he tries to not only extend his record to 100-0, but to also take the WVBA Heavyweight Championship of the World from Little Mac… (cue 1980-84 Showtime jingle) …on Showtime Championship Boxing! We welcome you, LIVE, to The Forum in Inglewood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, where tonight, Little Mac puts both his 27-0 record and his WVBA Heavyweight Championship of the World on the line in a 12-round battle against the legendary 99-0 #1 ranked contender Mr. Dream. Good evening, everyone. I’m Steve Albert and welcome to the first Showtime Championship Boxing of 1988, and, on behalf of all of us at Showtime, we wish you a happy new year. Just 8 days ago, Little Mac shocked the world by ending Super Macho Man’s 35-0 record and becoming the new WVBA Heavyweight Champion of the World, and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. Now, tonight, the Bronx native has a new challenger waiting in the wings, and that’s the 99-0 Mr. Dream. As always, I’m joined by the fight doctor Ferdie Pacheco and Bobby Czyz, and, gentlemen, it’s the dream match we thought we would never, ever see.”-Steve Albert.
42:02: “He’s not gonna get up, Bobby.”-Ferdie Pacheco.
“IT’S ALL OVER! LITTLE MAC HAS KNOCKED OUT MR. DREAM 30 SECONDS INTO THE THIRD ROUND AND REMAINS THE WVBA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD!!!!!”-Steve Albert.
“What a fight, Steve! What a fight!”-Bobby Czyz.
“I can’t believe what I’m seeing!”-Ferdie Pacheco.
(Replays)
“For the official decision, let’s go to Jimmy Lennon, Jr.”-Steve Albert.
“Ladies and gentlemen, referee Mills Lane has called a stop to the bout at 30 seconds of the third round. He is the winner by way of knockout, and STILL the Undisputed, Undefeated WVBA Heavyweight Champion of the World… LITTLE MAC!!!!!-Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
“What a victory for Little Mac as he extends his record to 28-0. He’s standing by with Bill Harris.”-Steve Albert.
37:39: “We are ready to go with our main event, and for the official introductions, here’s Jimmy Lennon, Jr.”-Steve Albert.
“Ladies and gentlemen, LIVE from The Forum in Inglewood, CA, it’s time for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the main event of the evening: a 12-round heavyweight war for the WVBA Heavyweight Championship of the World! This bout is brought to you in part by Budweiser, your undisputed, undefeated King of Beers. (After mentioning the commission, doctors and judges) Your referee in charge of this bout is Mills Lane. Alright, fight fans, here we go; two heavyweight warriors are about to get it on, and, NOW, LIVE from The Forum in Inglewood, CA, ladies and gentlemen… IT’S SHOWTIME!!!!!”-Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
What I love about this game is that it discourages you from just spamming move after move like in practically any other fighting game at the time. You *_have_* to strategize and learn each boss' patterns so you can determine the most efficient way to defeat them.
*_This_* is the version of Punch-Out!! that I'm familiar with... Mostly because I have only ever experienced it through Ultimate NES Remix and on the NES Classic.
It's a rhythm game disguised s a sport game
All the Punch-Out games do that, not just the NES one.
Who knew Stanley from The Office was such an amazing boxing coach
Omg he does look like Stanley
The music is icon and never gets mentioned. Hearing it takes me back to 1988 and renting this at Mike’s Milk when it was a gas station franchise. This game and legendary wings are true og games.
Punch-Out’s score for the NES was composed by Yukio Kaneoka (who previously did the music and sounds for Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior), Akito Nakatsuka (who previously did the music and sounds for Excitebike and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, which came out the same year as Punch-Out) and Kenji Yamamoto (who later did the music and sounds for Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22), whilst Legendary Wings’ score for the NES was composed by Tamayo Kawamoto and Manami Matsumae.
One of the reasons I purchased a Nes Mini a few years back. Absolutely love this game.
The Best Punch-out that goes both ways. With the Dream or Tyson!
Nah, Super Punch Out is better

“Gentlemen, I gave you instructions in the locker room earlier. I expect a good, clean fight. Obey my commands at all times and protect yourselves at all times. In case of a knockdown, you go to a corner and stay there until you come out. Any questions? LET’S GET IT ON!!!!!”-Mills Lane.
42:10: “Thanks, Mac, and we’ll talk again. Back to you, Steve.”-Bill Harris.
“Thank you, Bill, and what a way to kickoff 1988 with Little Mac ending Mr. Dream’s 99-0 record and retaining the WVBA Heavyweight Championship of the World. A great night of boxing from Hollywood. For Ferdie Pacheco, Bobby Czyz, Bill Harris and our entire Showtime crew, this is Steve Albert saying goodnight from The Forum!”-Steve Albert.

This thread brought me life this day. A+
Thank you for providing such good quality. It sucks when I look up a retro game, and all I find is, like, 480p uploads from 10 years ago.
Timeless classic yo
My favorite game of all time!!!
This is the version I grew up with. I remember just how hard Mr. Dream was for me as a kid
I have never beat king hippo that fast, nice
My brother and i would run around the room during the running cut scenes.
One of my all time faves❤ I cannot believe someone beat this game blindfolded 😅😅😅😅
I liked playing this on NES as a kid. I never got good enough to make it to Mr. Dream, though. I think Mr. Sandman was as far as I ever got.
I like how they are all talking junk with busted faces in between rounds
I feel the need to join the Nintendo Fun Club
El negocio de fontanería como que andaba mal. 😂😂😂😂😂 Mario se metió a árbitro de boxeo.
Does Mr dream live next door to kirby?
Funny I was listening to a remix of this game
Liked the game on Switch but bruh do you need lightning speed reflexes to get past Sandman.
Playing against really good Little Mac Mains in Smash be like this, lol...
Yeah, the last few guys are stupid fast
The switch felt like there was a delay when I left dodged the Dreamland Express uppercuts. Thank God I did it some how and beat him.
How i can do the special punch when i get the star ?

Fantastic video.

Are people allowed to download and use your footage elsewhere, such as in making videos, or are they strictly to watch for archival purposes?
I don't mind if pieces are used in other videos as long as credit is clearly given for the footage.
lucky to have snagged a gold famicom cartridge back in the good old days when these were seen as holding no value. got mine for like $20 ($8, $12 shipping.)
People can say all day that Nintendo playing dirty with third party developers is what destroyed the Master System, but the NES's first party offerings were on a whole other level over what Sega put on the Master System.
Sega ended up doing the same thing, sort of. They started getting exclusive rights from virgin interactive to develop Disney games along with trying to cut off Nintendo from Capcom further developing games for them. The only thing what did sega in the end was themselves.
Still a classic 💪🏾
Is there someone who could tell me how a couple of Punch Out themes got onto the NES port of Stargate?
Omg....😊 Such nostalgia
Mr.Dream... Booooo!!!
Is it literally the same damn game just without Tyson?
Yes they took Mike out after his wrongful (IMO) conviction
How come you couldn't win in Round 2 at the end?
I was going for KOs, not TKOs.
@@NintendoCompleteah, that must be why you avoided hitting Piston Honda and Bald Bull on their power moves.

What I heard at the time, was that Nintendo launched this version of the game because MT was arrested for rape. But looking at the dates now, this re-launch occurred almost one year before his arrest.
Gaming Historian did a video on this a while back...IIRC, the contract was not renewed for cost reasons (Nintendo being cheap).
I watch my middle brother a lot From long time ago..
I'm not that much of a skill as he is
Where's the Mike Tyson one?
It's linked in the description.
Games to exhilerate.
Who is Mr dream is that a Mandela effect
It's not Mandela effect, it's called Mike Tyson no longer having a contract with Nintendo so they removed him. It's not that complex, bro. 😂
WHERE'S DRAGO ?
He's fighting Rocky on the SMS version of the titular game
Probably in a gulag after losing to Rocky.
