Hearing that 3s & 7s clean riff makes me appreciate just how much the bassline adds in that song. Fucking amazing musicianship.
You can here that in every song 🤦🏻♂️
Your comment shows me, you haven’t really played the guitar.
Cause what you tell us is the struggle everyone has who wants to cover songs and thinks, sths missing in the tone.
It’s always the bass
@@SirBender I'm a drummer. I literally don't care about your struggle.
Man I want this pedal badly; QotSA is definitely my favourite band and this seems to be the perfect pedal to accompany my guitar with and play their songs
Josh homme uses it
Im not here to discourage you but tone demo's really aren't something you can trust, you have to take them with a grain of salt, because the amps and guitar pickups also shape a lot of the sound and that's for the live sound, when you are recording the sound and uploading it on yt then you add a ton more variables, mic type and brand, mic placement and also add the compresion that UA-cam ads to the audio, not saying this pedal is bad, just that you shouldn't trust tone demos and think that you will sound exactly the same
Just use any distortion, neck pickup and roll off all the tone on your guitar
Peavey Decade* that's what you should look for. You're welcome
@@perebernardo3829 this man speaks truth
Awesome! Listened to songs for the deaf the other day. Love the pedal show offs know what I’m gonna be buying lol.
haha you're welcome mate! It's a cracking pedal :-)
As stone as the sound can be, amazing ! And again it looks so easy when you play it 🤟
Ah thanks mate!
Yo this channel has appeared out of nowhere. Such amazing content! Keep it up!
haha glad you found it! Praise the algorithm ;-) Thanks mate
I really love this channel and how you showcase these pedals man. Great job, keep it up!
Ah thanks so much Sam! Lots more to come 😊🤘
For anyone still considering after Christmas, I just plugged in straight from the box and it sounds amazing, I highly recommend for anyone looking for those QOTSA tones :)
Thanks Jake, hope you’re having lots of fun! Cracking pedal🤘
Thank you so much for this video....I got the pedal recently and haven't taken time to truly learn it....this help immensely.
Glad it helped!
I have the PDF-1 and it's super rad. I'm pretty sure Josh just uses the clean side of the pedal to enhance is already awesome distorted tone. Cheers
I did ask Luke at Stone Deaf if he used this particular pedal but he said Josh is super secretive about that stuff so wasn’t sure, he did have two of the PDF-1s at one point but yea they’re great tone shapers for this sort of sound, I like the range of dirt on this one too so you can get the tones from one pedal. It’s a fun thing! 😀🤘
@@LetsPlayAllYa, I hear Josh is notorious for being secretive about his gear.
Stone deaf is QOTSA
Fantastic as ever Matt 👏
Ah thanks Karl 😊🤘
I have the old one and pair it with a Catalinbread SFT. Works great. Yours sounds good and nasty too
Thanks mate, ah that's another great pedal!
Sold the pdf2 and bought a sft 2v .....much better pedal...very flexible tonewise....pdf looks like a toy compared to sft.
@@tomz1989 my SFT is v2 as well (stones/stoner switch)
Great video man, this thing definitely just made it on to my wishlist.
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it!
What does it sound like with a tuned down rig? C standard for example for the first half of their discography, a video like this for bass would be cool too, QotSA bass goes under the radar a little bit have had consistency great bass tone, eg Mexicola
Great vid
He did a bunch starting halfway through tbe video. Thats C standard
Yup as Psyfonify pointed out some of the tunes in here are tuned to C standard :-) Good suggestion on bass, this pedal sounds great with bass too tbh.
@@LetsPlayAll never seen a strat tuned down that far before haha
@@rhyshepburn3913 I use the Digitech Drop mate, secret weapon 😊🤘
@@rhyshepburn3913 Drop or not, its all the same..i got my strat tuned down to A# for years and it sounds killer haha. I did put a duncan twangbanger in the bridge though. Tele single coil bridge pickup sound instead of a strat single bridge. Much more raunch and beef
The PDF-2 is a great tool for getting many of QOTSA's tones, but the gain structure isn't right for quite a few of those riffs you played.
I Sat By The Ocean calls for a more classic distortion sound, like a Boss DS-1 that is slightly treble boosted (with the PDF-2 providing a boost to the mids).
The main riff on No One Knows is actually surprisingly clean... it's pure tube breakup with less hair on it than you'd think (from Josh's Ampeg VT-40).
Quite a few more examples but won't drone on, lol. One thing I will say is you missed a riff that the PDF-2's second channel sounds PERFECT on to my ears... Sick, Sick, Sick! Only issue with that one is the riff that comes in after the chorus which is done on a Fulltone Ultimate Octave (FOXX Tone Machine clone). Switching between the two fuzz circuits in a live setting is a pain, especially if you want to keep the PDF-2's parametric circuit engaged and just switch off the fuzz.
Thanks for the in-depth feedback mate!
@@LetsPlayAll No worries! Hope it's useful. I enjoyed the video man, hope I didn't come off as too negative!
@@wibblegorm no not at all mate! I’m no expert so happy for the extra info!! 😀🤘
Since you seem to know what you're talking about...what's going on effects wise in I'm Designer?
what do you think of the sft by catalinbread ?¿?
I love the screaming hand skateboard.. love the pedal bro!!
Haha thanks buddy! 😀🤘
All the deep cut tracks, great video just subscribed
Thanks for the sub mate!
Big sale on this pedal right now! Just picked one up off their website, nows the time!!
Nice!
I think the PDF 1X sounds a bit better than the 2, but they all seem to be QOTSA driven.
They’re very similar pedals, the PDF-1X has the gain set internally as a set and forget kind of thing but I’ll be demoing that in a few weeks too but taking a different approach to the QOTSA thing as that’s well documented with that pedal. They actually run well into each other too 😊🤘
The video is so great. I just ordered the pdf-2. I'm curious. thx.
Cool enjoy mate!
Great tone bro
Thanks buddy!
Trying to work out a good combination on the Pod Go but haven't nailed it yet. Great video
Now i might have to get one for the cleopatrick type tone😂
I previously owned this pedal. I got tired of in a year or so.
Cons:
Quite large
Doesn't stack easily
Noisy
Hard to use in other songs as you'd sound as Queens of the stone Age anyway.
Pros:
Josh Homme in a box
Switched to SFT Catalinbread and wowed (and still now).
I have an actual Ampeg VT-40, and I’ll say right now that is the tone. The pedals are all relatively low gain, and used to shape as an EQ. I highly recommend the SFT if you can’t get the amp! Then work your way backwards. The band isn’t using the distortion on the PDF that’s not the sound at all.
I think this PDF works well on clean boost and proper EQ settings if…you already have a SFT pedal or the actual amp. Thats why so many end up selling this. It’s not $180 Queens in a box at all, and cheaper ways of doing it!
I bought the VT-40 a few weeks ago for $350! Plugged it in and used a treble booster, Klon clone, TS808, Foxxy Octave….all set at 0 gain or 1-3 if they had a gain. It nailed the tone! They don’t use a lot of heavy distortion pedals come to find out…even the Fuzz pedals are pretty tame. It’s all in the amp section of the Ampeg!
Your vids don’t disappoint!
Thanks mate!
You have to do a breakdown on each one of these please! 🤘🏻
Don’t worry, lots more QOTSA to come!
@@LetsPlayAll these are QOTSA deep cuts man, clearly know your queens. Their first 3 albums are masterpieces of desert grunge if you will
Stone Deaf is amazing
Agreed Joey 😊🤘
Would've loved to hear it on bass. Great video regardless
Nice video! I have that pedal and the SFT as well. A good pairing for qosta tones (Mids boost from pdf into the sft). I always find the dirty chanel of the pdf too compressed, but in your video it sounds crispy and nice! Not pure qosta tone, but fits well. I am really curious about your amp for clean and overdriven sounds, what is it? Are you stacking another pedal for dirty sounds? Thanks for your nice work
Thanks for the kind words mate! I’ll be demoing the SFT shortly too haha, that’s another great pedal. I’ve been playing with stacking it with a few pedals like the PDF-1x and they do work great together! Amp wise I use the same settings in every vid I do, it’s a victory v40 set just on the very edge of breakup so all the tones in this vid are just the PDF-2. Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Regular John is spot on
Thanks!
Nice playing man!
Thanks!
what would you suggest to play along with the melodie above the main chords of 3's & 7's ... an octaver? as always... really enjoyed your videos !!!!
Alex from Germany
cheers
Thanks mate! Not to sure tbh sounds like a load of reverb, possibly some octave going on there, will have to sort a lesson at some point 🤘
Wow this sounds SO great
Thanks man!
most of the examples sounded pretty spotsa on, man. awesome vid
cheers!
Awesome and very informative video thank you👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Incredible hearing a UA-camr play In My Head without powerchords, it's almost as if most "guitarists" can't actually hear what they're listening to. I really like the second verse when the harmonic notes kick in. I think it was Alain Johannes who played it on Lullabies, Josh was on bass.
My PDF-2 has a very annoying feature, the Dirty channel has a noticeable drop in volume compared to Clean so it pretty much renders the footswitch useless. I just use it as a high-mid/treble booster on Clean and get my gain further down the chain.
Thanks mate, funnily enough I don’t consider myself a UA-camr or much of a guitarist haha but glad you enjoyed the vid!
That Sonic Blue Suhr is BOSS.
thanks Joshua, i think it's a Daphne blue (thin skin finish) but cheers!
I gotta know what tele that is man. I love it
Thanks man. It's a custom build by Dave Walsh at Eternal Guitars that I was lucky to pick up second hand - more on it here ua-cam.com/video/4flr8JXyppo/v-deo.html
i feel like it gets a bit too compressed and farty on the higher gain sounds unfortunately - i wonder what running the gain lower and an SD-1 into it would sound like
haha well there is a pedal that'll do fart noises now :-) It's superb as a tone shaper, pretty sure that's what Josh Homme uses it for with other dirt pedals to get that honky eq tone
I have this and the PDF-1x l, prefer the PDF-1x solely due to the volume knob. Was really disappointed when I learned my PDF-2 had no such control.
Yea the PDF-1X volume control is super useful but then you have the gain as an internal trim pot. Funnily enough I'm demoing the PDF-1X at 5pm today :-)
@@LetsPlayAll Will watch! The good thing is it’s such a stackable pedal you can feed different gain stages, or run both. I spent some time and found my favorite sweet spot for the trim pot. It’s an EQ pedal as much as a distortion. Plus….they look damn cool on a board….
I love mine, but it tends to be really compressed, even with low gain settings.
I sometimes muss the punch.
Thanks Matt,
The t-shirt…gave me flashbacks, that tongue is 3D on my phone!
Where can I get one?
haha nice! err i'm not sure where i got it but it's a Santa Cruz "Screaming Hand" hoodie :-)
Hi !! Wich pedal is the best for QOTSA sound ? PDF-2 or catalinbread SFT ?
Both good options, as is this but I’m heavily biased haha ua-cam.com/video/ObUSdGBLMPA/v-deo.htmlsi=VsmT0128uCe4a4bG - will sort a comparison between all three at some point
Have this pedal, but when I push the Dirtt button, the volume is multiplied like x10 😅 and hissing in my amp. I'm using a T-rex Chameleon for power supply, so that won't be the problem. Any tips to helps this? On clean I can have really good sounds, but the noise when putted on Dirt is too much 😕 and the difference of volume is also HUGE
It’s probably the fact the EQ band is drastic and introduces more volume. That’s typical of you mix to raise a band of EQ, and the instrument gets louder.
Thing is the sound is not in the distortion. I have an amp like Josh and that’s the distortion. The PDF is the boost and tone shaper end. Better off pairing it with a SFT pedal at the end, and just keeping clean boost. I never use the gain on this pedal..I get it all from the amp. The distortion is just kind of there, and the highten EQ plus distortion circuit together will make it super loud. Try backing down the height, and running into another distortion, fuzz or dirty amp!
These riffs were probably much cleaner in iso, but sounds heavier like this in the context of the band.
Thanks great review
Thanks for watching!
please do lessons of all songs in this video!!! #QOTSA forever
Haha working on it mate! :-)
What confuses me about this pedal is the gain circuit. But in context with QOTSA type sounds. Sure it’s a gain and going through a clean amp it gets you in the ballpark. But I have a Ampeg VT-40 I scored for $350 2 weeks ago. All the distortion is there…like all of it outside the octave Foxxy tone sounds and muff stuff.
So to me it seems one would just never use the gain much in this, if they are using the amp or even an SFT pedal to emulate the sound. From what I gather set the amp to edge of breakup, then hit it hard with this on clean and boost the crap out of the low mids.
From what I’ve heard and gathered, the distortion on this pedal is not really used much on the bands stuff…it’s mostly boost and EQ before drives. Also I saw he had another one behind his 4 Ampeg VT40s as an always on one.
Many ways to do it I suppose, but I see many people disappointed thinking this pedal is the magic key. I have the PDF1x as well for my Ampeg.
Now for The Strokes stuff….i believe they are using the distortion on the pedal. They tend to use fairly clean fender amps, and even very high headroom Hiwatts and HRD amps. So I 100% hear that tons more as a different sound do the Jekyl and Hyde they use as well.
I’d tell any kid wanting to get the tone…start with the CatalinaBread SFT if you can’t get the real amp. Put it last before any effects and turn it on. Then run your Eqs and treble boosters, Boss SD1s and such.
I’ve seen Josh do small setup with just the PDF first, octave fuzz and a Space Echo into a cranked Ampeg. I think for most I’d say work backwards ensuring the pedal or amp. Then get a pdf and a SD1 or Treble Booster. I’ve just seen many get this pedal or the Fulltone octave thinking it’s the core tones. Then they sell them off a lot, especially the PDF. You need to run it into an Ampeg based pedal, a broken up Ampeg or even a Plexi to really get the dirt tones. The pedals just sculpt the driven Ampeg which has its own sound. And what I believe to be the core distorted sound overall. All the dirt pedals are set pretty low to 0 gain, to get different EQ tastes on the fly.
Yea there’s a lot less gain generally in QOTSA tunes than people think and think you’re right that they used the PDF more as a way to sculpt their tone as part of a bigger signal chain (and then there’s the studio eq and trickery on top). Have you looked at the Skeleton Key? It’s a pedal designed by Funny Little Boxes and myself (so take into account my bias here haha) - the reason I mention it is cos rather than going after what are essentially components of their tone, we went after the end product. There’s some great independent reviews online by music radar and guitar world and it was in the top 5 pedals of Total Guitars gear of the year so may be of interest. That into your cranked amp should give you all the core queens you need 🤘
@@LetsPlayAll oh yeah man, before I bought the amp which wasn’t planned..already have a nice Sky King I own and a JCM 800 plus Bassman at my practice space. But it was such a good deal and grabbed it for the price.
But I did around Christmas try to buy one of the Skeleton Keys given price and ease. But if was sold out, and no used ones online. I don’t plan to drag the Ampeg out to gigs. Mostly use the Sky King which is a loud 1x12. So was eventually going to put a pedal on the board….either SFT at the end parked next to my Dirty Lityle Secret pedal or something….but yeah Skeleton Key was sold out, and couldn’t find it anywhere at the time.
@@mattg082 nice, yea bad ass amps for sure! Skeleton Key will be back in stock soon mate, Andy has a mailing list that’ll notify you if that’s of interest 🤘😊
@@LetsPlayAll appreciate it! Yeah been using the Sky King as my main. It just kinda does everything I need, with a pedal board. Easy to gig and get around although it is a bit heavy. Just a lot packed in from home, to practice to gig. The other amps are just loud big beasts to record and jam on.
But I’ll def get on that mailing list!
@@mattg082 yea I’m a fan of a smaller rig for sure. I used to use my V40 victory head with a 1x12 and get all my gain from a small pedalboard, nice easy load ins is always pleasing haha

Raise the A string! That string bouncing off the pole pieces is grating as hell.
Anyone know the circuit topology? I’m getting like rat with the gain rolled back kinda vibes, but I’m not really sure. It’s not the typical aggressive and wooly big muff kind of sound, and it doesn’t sound like a fuzz face or tone bender circuit to me either. This one has me stumped
Checked out their website, and it seems to be a modded maestro. Very cool.
Love the effect but does it dissappear in a live band setting?
Great in a live setting, works especially well as an EQ layer in between clean and dirty to ensure other pedals you're using cut through the mix. The controls take a little time to get familiar with but defo won't disappear with a live band
@@LetsPlayAll ah thats good to know, I have a few fuzz pedals that just dissappear and thought this may suffer the same.
@@leeryan5667 big muff style pedals will for sure, they have very few mids. Either put a mid pushed drive before them (I love combining the 1991 or Tumnus before muff style pedals) or get yourself a Hungry Beaver fuzz! Big muff on steroids with a mid push 😊🤘

@@LetsPlayAll hahahahaha naaaaa! People still think Peavey amps are not worth it ... Personally I love them; they're real workhorses, they can handle lots of abuse over the years. Pretty reliable equipment.
I hate strats and don't care much for QotSA but that sounded awesome. That pedal is amazing. (well maybe the humbucker in the strat helped but anyways)
Well considering the focus of this vid was on QOTSA riffs, I appreciate you taking the time to watch it and provide some kind feedback too! Cheers :-)

The riff is Little Sister, but the bran of the guitar is Eternal Guitars, a custom build i picked up second hand
No One Knows verse riff should be played almost clean, all the dirt comes from the bass. Only chorus and bridge are distorted.

@@LetsPlayAll yes and made in UK 👍🏻
160 bucks is a great deal 👍🏽
for sure man, their entire range is great value imo :-)
Are you tuned in C standard?
Varies song to song tbh mate, but I use a Digitech Drop pedal for the stuff tuned down to C 😊🤘
My only issue is how loud the pedal is
I have the pdfx1 it has the volume output, but find I don’t use or adjust it much…unless I go past 1 o’clock on the height. The more height I put on the louder it gets due to EQ height. I don’t really care about the distortion, it’s noisy and a Rat, Muff, Caralinabread SFT or in my case a real VT-40 cranked sounds better…with the boost on normal.
But I do find the distortion cool, just probably the last thing I touch on the pedal…nothing special about it as much as the EQ and what’s on the other side of it.
I love mine! But just keep in mind the height raises volume, and distortion will also do the same and be noisy.

This pedal actually sounds better here than in the albums. I love QOFST but the mixing on their albums is disgusting to me...maybe that's that's esthetic they were going for.
Well good to hear my recording gear is working well anyways mate :-) Hope you enjoyed the video!
May not be important to some, but the fact that a lot of riffs were not even in the correct tuning.

I know you probably changed it so you wouldn't get a copyright strike but I expected those fast pick strikes in 3s & 7s and it hurt my brain they werent there. Lol
Why did they make it? There are tones of overdrive pedals. All the same, all the same.
