Funny little boxes can do no wrong.
Top drawer job there lads, love the completeness of it...getting the artist who did the albums to do the artwork, knowing he did the writing on the liner etc and getting him to label the knobs...immaculate. Pure fan passion that. Sounds great too. Thanks for including the Hungry Beaver! What a pairing! Is right lads, cheers! 🙌🍻
This is honestly really inspiring me to buy this. It’s very cool it’s marketing to help you with the QOTSA tones.
Flipping heck, I only got halfway through your review and I pre ordered it straight away!! This has put a big smile on my face today..!! Would love to know if you do tutorials on how to play all those songs too please?
Haha awesome! Yes I’ve got a few lessons already for qotsa just check out my playlists. More to come! 🤘😊
So I’ve tried this pedal with the following:
Boss sd1
Boss ge7
Fulltone fat boost 3
Catalinbread sft
Pdf2
So for stacking the pedal, this is incredible. Even if it’s just a clean boost. Compared to the boss superoverdrive, there is less noise. It’s louder, clearer and helps the notes cut through the mix.
With the Catalinbread sft it was great for replacing the need for the fulltone fat boost. Using these pedals with/without the pdf2 is as close you will get to Josh hommes sound without being Josh homme. In this scenario, the fat boost is replacing the need for the combo of sd-1, with Ge7 pushed mids. Anyway, the skeleton key was able to do the same job as the fat boost with fattening up the sound and giving a clear volume boost. The tone knob helped add more mids/treble or strip it back a bit with more bass.
The only issue with this pedal is it doesn’t offer a lot of gain. But what I will say is that’s actually a good thing because Josh homme and Troy have the gain to about 10 o’clock so it’s perfect of doing the job of Qotsa sounds. Most Qotsa songs are actually very clean sounding with little to none overdrive. The tone shaping gives the illusion that it’s distorted but it’s really not. If anything the ampeg amps are doing most the work. When there is distortion in a song it’s probably fuzz. But Josh uses mainly a ge-7 and pdf1 for his sound.
To finish I’ll say with these other pedals the skeleton key is great. It just adds to the tone and body of the sound. Making it fatter but keeping it clear. If you want to save money on buying at least 3-4 of the pedals above, then this is the pedal to buy.
It goes after the end result of Qotsa sound which is a low driven, high treble, high Mids sound. In doing so you technically don’t need the pdf, SFT, SD-1 or GE7. If you have them pedals as well then you can create some amazing sounds.
I’ve found the following chain the best:
PDF-2 first --> into SK--> then into SFT
The SK replace the need then for the ge7, sd-1 and fat boost.
Thanks for such comprehensive feedback mate, that’s awesome you’ve found it so useful in the context of other similar qotsa pedals. I’ve been using it for a bunch of other non-qotsa tunes too which has been great fun! Love that you’re having so much fun with it ♥️😊🤘
Top quality video as usual and the tones from this thing are spot on. Congrats to both of you 🙌🏻
It’s been a while since I acquired the 1991 pedal and I can simply say that it blew my mind 🤯🤯, Andy really knows what he’s doing and above all he does it with heart and love
Because first of all he’s a fan of these bands
Can’t wait to order it!!! 🎸🎸
Cheers from Mexico!!!!
Damn… And I was thinking I don’t need any more pedals 😂
Very cool sounding and looking pedal, good job! I really like QOTSA sound and this pedal delivers it 100%
I’ve been trying to cop these tones since’05 with a few different amps and boxes? These Funny Little Boxes nailed everything in one pedal and with only 3 controls? Unless it was all done in post by you? Absolutely perfect.Absolutely sick.
Cheers! I never do any post on my vids, what you hear is just straight out of my tube amp into Two Notes captor and into audio interface. I have the Two Notes wall of sound that I use for the cab/mic sim so I can play silently (I record at night generally) and that's it. Didn't touch the amp throughout.
@@LetsPlayAll Your playing is stellar and this pedal is probably the one I need for all these most favorite tones. Thanks for sharing.
I don’t really love qotsa but holy crap this pedal is spot on. Looking forward to seeing what else you’ve made.
Came back just to say i can’t imagine my pedal board without it now what a fantastic piece of Engineering art
@@Streamingfriendlyunitshifter wow thanks so much mate that’s great to hear! ♥️😊🤘
Dam sounds great you got the solo notes little sister & deaf soundin Great.
I meant to pre order and missed it so I just bought one! Happy to support you guys in any way I can!
I missed the pre-orders the first time around, but finally got mine a few days ago. Really amazing pedal, stacks so well with other fuzzes and overdrives, it's become my always-on drive for my base tone. It's just the cherry on top to be able to pull out QOTSA tones whenever I want!
Ah that’s awesome you’re enjoying it mate, it’s really gone beyond what we intended it for haha. I love it before fuzz and drive pedals, great fun!
Yeh. This is a badass pedal. Just came from watching your Song For The Dead vid. Had to check this out. I hope they keep making them because I'm broke right now. 😂
@@tonya4157 thanks! Yea don’t worry it’s part of the Funny Little Boxes range 😊🤘
That's awesome! Hit the buy button immediately! Great job on capturing the tone!!
I didn't even watch the video 😂
I don't own a guitar or amp or know how to play 😮😂
Literally just got home to find a package waiting for me in my studio!!!!! Opened it up, and lo an behold, possibly the most beautiful pedal now in my collection! I LOVE that they are hand numbered. The build feels amazingly solid. Oh, and videos and picture do not do the artwork justice! I first came across this pedal sometime in October last year (if I remember correctly), and sat in awe of the tones coming out of it. I'm not usually one to rush out and get a pedal, but, my love of my life, knowing how much of a QOTSA/Josh Homme fan I am (according to Spotify I'm in their top 0.01% of listeners), she sneakily ordered this pedal for me in the end of November for my Christmas gift. I have been anxiously waiting since December 25th and and bouncing around in anticipation of this going on my pedalboard!!!
Now the question is, I have a "KLONE" type pedal currently with a "NOTA" type one on the way to replace it, a Stone Deaf PDF2 and a Hyper fuzz, already on there, are there any recommendations on where this should go in the signal chain? I'm typically wah-noise gate loop-klone-pdf2-fuzz-then back out to my modulation/delays/'verbs. I know it'll go into the noise gate loop, but where would I get the most out of my Skeleton key?
awesome!! great to hear you're so happy with it mate! i'd put it after the Klon(e) and before the PDF2, but tbh it will also work after the PDF2 as well so I'd just experiment with it - have fun!
Sounds great. Looks awesome
Well this obliterated any doubts I had about this-it’s a must grab!
I don't play guitar so am not the target audience for the pedal or even this video. I am a big QOTSA fan though and, damn, this sounds pretty much perfect to my ear. Awesome product!
Thanks mate much appreciated! Getting to work with Boneface was amazing, he absolutely nailed the design, we were so pleased how it all turned out 🤘😊
That’s an awesome sounding pedal man! Just ordered me one. Even with shipping to US is a great price! Thanks for what u do man, enjoy your videos!!
the sick sick sick tone is very very close. a little muddy overall but everything can be adjusted and tweaked. for an unadulterated qotsa tone get a Matchless Hotbox. super pricey but that's the sound. with a Green Rhino you can't go wrong.
Ordered :) been looking for something to give me that dirgy, muddy, swampy power. Thanks for showing it off on P90s, as a P90 user not everyone does that, so much appreciated
Great video! Can really hear a lot of use for this in Soundgarden stuff too
cheers mate! I know i've just focused on it's primary goal but it's actually got a wider range of uses beyond just QOTSA tbh, will be including in more lessons coming up!
@@LetsPlayAll Awhh can't wait to see it, been very tempted by the Pearl Jam pedal too recently, so cool that these sounds are out there for us now!
@@frasermacdonald1293i mean i'm heavily biased here haha but yea love that one too, use it all the time ;-)
Sounds great, but once you played your "clean" amp setting to start, that sounded awesome already. A reminder that one has to have a good starting point to build from when it comes to tone and the 1-stompbox solution isn't a thing unless you have that awesome foundation.
Andy designed it using a solid state amp so it sounds great in that. I also played it into my Boss Katana and whilst it won’t turn a pristine clean amp into the same levels of gain here, adding a little boost on the katana got similar results. Point being it does love a tube amp but you don’t need one for the pedal to do it’s thing. In hindsight a few examples of other amps would’ve been helpful I guess 🤘😊
@@LetsPlayAll Thanks for the reply! That would have been interesting to see how it handled the solid state amp. I forgot to mention in my original comment how much I love QOTSA and how much the sound of this pedal and amp combo is top notch and simplifies chasing that sound (but to me, that killer amp sound doesn't hurt by itself either!).
@@ryanjimison1747 no worries! With a super clean amp there’s much less gain on tap but you still get the honky growl basically. With my boss katana I just added on of the built in boosts to the super clean Chanel or used on of its more broken up tones. But thanks for the kind words! I actually leave my amp settings pretty much the same for every demo I do, the Morgan is a great pedal platform amp as well as being very nice on its own. Worth noting the down tuned guitar also adds to the overall tone for sure!
Awesome sounding and looking queens pedal!
Good pricing on these. What's holding me back for pulling the trigger are the hideous import fees since the uk left europe. Otherwise I would have bought one directly after watching this video. Now it goes in the hmm maybe later list. Brexis was sure a good idea right...
Yea Brexit was and is an appalling mess! If Andy used retailers the pedals would be more like £150 upwards tbh, but yea appreciate the pain!
So are the import fees you talk about for non UK people, or is that £99 shown on the site not what we'd pay in the UK?
@@ClaptrapRapture yes non UK would have import fees, UK people it’s just £99 plus postage - I think that’s calculated at check out
I'm just buying FLB pedals now whether I like them or not - just to support the cause! (I do like them by the way!)
Thatk you for introducing me to that pedal buddy. For the Stoner Sound I normally use the "big muff", but this one is insanely good. Ahh... I do not regret subscribing to you man! Greetings from a fellow guitarrist from Germany! Have a good one! :)
@@LetsPlayAll Oh that I do! Especially the 90s Gruinge Guitar Lessons you provide here :) The evil Riffs of STP... which kill my fingers every time yeah yeah...
Would love to hear how this pedal affects a clean signal.
If you have a really crystal clean signal there’ll be less gain to the overall tone basically. Low tuned guitars, fairly hot humbucker pickups, tube amp will all play a part in the overall sound but my amp is set the same way here in every single demo I do. I think Andy will be doing some more tones on his website when he gets chance 🤘
Legit tones man, just also found the 1991 after searching for Funny Little Boxes, also very authentic! So I have to ask, when is the Superunknown pedal coming?? I read a post by the albums producer that Chris used a blend of a Mesa Dual Rec and a 70s Marshall JMP 50 so not anything too off the wall, that said it’s a very distinctive rhythm tone in my opinion. Just an idea anyway! 😉
P.S. is that a Tokai LP Custom? I used to have a MIJ LC95, great guitars
Cheers mate, love the 1991, use it all the time! Haha who knows we may do a Soundgarden pedal at some point but the 1991 does a pretty good job for those tones already 🤘😊
@@LetsPlayAllOh really? I mean I love me some Pearl Jam as much as the next guy but SG tones as well, consider my interest piqued! 😎🤘
@@LetsPlayAllIf we all ask nicely, please please please do a soundgarden pedal 😊
@@andrewsmith9070 haha possibly but as I say I use the 1991 for most Soundgarden stuff tbh so I’m not sure we need to create a Soundgarden specific one. Never say never tho!
Saw QOTSA in Birmingham on 19th Nov ….. ordered my pedal now !!!!
Oosh! Nice one, what an amazing live band! Saw them at the O2 and was blown away!
@@LetsPlayAll Yes they were genuinely the tightest live band I’ve ever seen which at 52 (unfortunately 😂) has been quite a few 👍🏻🎸😂 keep up the great work mate 👍🏻🍺🎸
@@DucatiDave68 completely and their live sound was easily the best I’ve seen. Hope they tour again soon! Cheers mate 🤘😊
Nice work. Sounds like it’ll nail Mexicola as well judging by the Regular John demo.
Another great demo lets play just wondered what are the picks your using there on the hunt for some new ones curious to try them keep up the great vids 😍🤘
Thanks mate! I’m using Jim Root Dunlop signature picks at the mo, really liking them
@@LetsPlayAll thanks for the reply will search for them and maybe get this pedal just for queen of the stone age covers 😍🤔
I’ve actually got a Maton BB1200 Josh Homme signature that’ll work nicely with this. I wonder how hard it’ll be to grab on in Australia.
Nice! All orders are direct from Andy at funnylittleboxes.co.uk/products/skeleton-key
@@LetsPlayAll I think I’m gonna have to do that. I assumed they’d be sold out at this point.
@@chaos4316 no it’s not a limited product, demand has been phenomenal tho so Andy’s just frantically building and ordering more components but you can preorder to get one 🤘😊
Love it! Need it!
Just finished building a clone of the 1991! Such a great pedal!!
I love the 1991 and I'm sure I'll love this, too.
ohhh hope I can snag one. Boneface is an instant buy
Andy’s working his fingers to the bone (no pun intended haha) to clear his backlog of orders but you can sign up on the website funnylittleboxes.co.uk/pages/newsletter-signup to be notified when they’re back in stock (expected end of Jan) 🤘😊
Very nice indeed 👍
Would totally order one but the shipping fee to Canada is almost half the price of the pedal...
Ouch! I know Andy’s looking into a improving this at some point for Canadian customers. Although that said he does try to keep costs down by selling direct, if he was going via a retailer or distributor the pedal would likely be more like £150, but as I say, something he is aware of for some customers 🤘
Give a demo of this pedal setting. Without Qotsa riffs. Yeah I know that’s the purpose of it. But I like pedals that can do other vibes as well. Thanks
Great sounding pedal and I'm very interested! Is this limited edition? Do I need to be quick snatching up this bad boy?
Thanks! Nope it’s not limited edition at all (although the first batch sold out already haha). Andy’s ordered more parts already tho so pre-orders available already - likely a 3-4 weeks wait from time of order
Yeah, thats cool. How great is it that the artwork is the same guy? I play qotsa all the time imma have to get that
Amazing
'Clean' tone 😄
Haha force of habit, meant to say without pedal, but my amp settings are the same as always. The pickups in that particular guitar do drive the amp more
Spot on! Was the slide part on “I Sat By the Ocean” using the same sound?
cheers! that part is double tracked and sounds slightly fuzzier to me but i mean ball park it wouldn't be far off that
This thing would be crazy fun with an EQ pedal to go with it
Insant buy, it's heading across the pond so I'll probably forget about it until it gets here as a nice little gift to my future self.
That morgan amp sounds awesome, is it a more darker amp?
Thanks! No it’s not a dark amp at all tbh. The settings I use here with just the amp sound very different with other guitars - I use the same amp settings for majority of my demos so gain always just on edge of breakup but in this one with the hot pickups and low tuned guitar the base tone does sound much darker
Awesome pedal. Nailed the tone. What is the black guitar?
Thanks! Charvel pro mod DK24 I got secondhand. Has Bareknuckle ceramic Nailbombs too
One slight problem. Not everyone in this pedal budget range can afford a Morgan amp. Some examples with a more. Affordable amp would be super helpful
Will do another vid at some point to highlight that. It was developed on a very budget friendly solid state amp and I’ve used it with my boss katana too and it sounds great. The pedal definitely does love tube amps as you can then use the volume on the pedal to push the amp into more gain but that’s just one use case. On a pristine clean setup you won’t get as much gain from just the pedal, but I’ve used it with a few setups and it does “the thing” you’d want it to do for qotsa tones
So...which is better this or the PDF2 "stone deaf" you reviewed a year ago...that one seemed more dynamic.
Both are great pedals. The PDF2 pedal has allegedly been used on Josh's board over the years, but more of a part of his sound, whereas with this one we just aimed to get as close to the final tones you hear on the album that can be dialed in as easy as possible. The PDF2 has a unique way of shaping the eq which some may not find intuitive, others may love. So it depends what you're after - would recommend giving both a try. At some point i'll do a vid on how to get QOTSA tones with various pedals
I want one!!
thing here is pretty straight up: if you play QOTSA covers you are going to need one.
ve been waiting for this pedal for over 8 weeks. How much longer do i have to wait?
@@24TONY72 email andy@funnylittleboxes.co.uk mate and he’ll give you an update. Do check your spam mailbox too in case you’ve missed an update from him
In fact just spoke to Andy, update going out tmrw for those waiting and he does appreciate the patience! You should have some news tmrw mate
hi i dont mean to nag you, but is there going to be a video on how to use a Boss Katana with the pedal? mines already delivered but im saving for Christmas, cant wait!
hey mate, not soon, was going to do something for the FLB website but tbh Andy's just snowed with orders and I'm snowed with vids/demos/patreon requests etc. Basically tho just don't select the clean channel (or if you do add a boost in the signal chain on the Katana just to give it a bit of light OD) - i think i set it up with the crunch channel but light gain with the SK before it - give that a go mate 🙂
Ordered mine back in September. Do we know when these will ship?
Andy’s furiously building them all and I believe he’s said anyone who ordered before 31st Oct will get it before xmas but if you ordered in sept shouldn’t be too much longer 🤘
Sweet fairy kisses on the bawsack..I’ve been waiting too long for this….
I think it would need more compression to get Josh Homme’s tones, would buy it in the blink of an eye if it had a compression toggle switch (and maybe more gain on tap)
@@LetsPlayAll do you know if the builder you are working with do custom builds ? As I said I would love the pedal with a compression switch and more gain
@@Frenchmelodymaker the price of doing a custom one-off would be prohibitively high unfortunately but no reason you can’t pair it with a compression pedal, in terms of more gain I just use the volume to push my tube amp harder 🤘
You could put a compressor in front of it ...to compress or boost it if you want
Josh actually uses way less gain than you’d think. A lot of times the bass is covering that ground. This definitely has enough gain
Is this Skeleton key pedal circuit designed based on the Boss SD-1 tone circuit and Peavey Decade tiny amplifier?
Nope I mention that at the beginning of the video. It’s an original circuit (op amp based) that we went after the end result tone you hear on the albums.
SOLD
Hi, would you put this before or after a tubescreamer or fuzz? Thanks
no rules really but generally i like it best before any other pedals. Can really transform some fuzz pedals into a completely new thing which is good fun. Before OD or Distortion gives it an extra growl and mid push so excellent for live band situations too. Enjoy!
Dope
I want this
Looks cool, and QOTSAIAB will surely sell - but I'm over here thinking you have this for ~125 bucks, and yet Danelectro is selling cheap chinese copies of obscure circuits no one wants for as much as a new Wampler.
They could've gouged fanboys, but they delivered something solid & cool for a decent price. Good on 'em.
The FLB philosophy is that awesome tone should be affordable to as many as possible 😊🤘
@@LetsPlayAll sadly Dano used to be about that as well. Big jump from a French Toast to a Billionaire Boost!
I'll be keeping an eye on the brand. I'm in "too much gear" mode rn 😁
If Only might be the most spot on out of all of them. This pedal looks sick - just ordered!
Awesome!
