I cut all my denim to fit in configurations with left over flannels to equal 16.5 inch blocks- 16” finished . 2 patches , 4 patches , solid pieces a few 8 patches … love them !
With this being a quilt that will be used a lot, I decided to press the seems to the side. I didn't have to worry about what side to press them to due to the blocks being staggered. So I pressed them to which ever side it laid flattest.

Do you use a sharp or ballpoint needle?
Usually a sharp but you definitely can try both!
Did you press the seams open?
