    Thank you, I didn't realize that I haven't made the minky quilt from the kit that I have, because I didn't know how. Now, I do!

    I’ve not done a lot with Minky. I tried to free motion quilt a double sided Minky baby quilt. It was really tough to see where I had been. It still turned out very nice. It was a gift so they had to love it!😅
    I made another baby quilt with a carpenter star out of quilting cottons on the front and Minky on the back. I quilted the heck out of it and the back was jaw dropping. The Minky took my ruler work and my feathering to another level. I highly recommend trying it! I wasn’t sure how it would turn out with so much quilting. It is very versatile! I used wool batting, because of the fire retardant properties but I really want to try bamboo batting with Minky. I use bamboo batting in my commission t-shirt quilts. The drape is lightweight and very soft. Great info in this video ladies. Than you so much for sharing!

    What a great teaching tutorial. Could you also teach us how to use Minky on a sit down mid arm I have a sweet 16 with insert table and both extensions. It’s a wonderful big space but how to work with the stretch of the Minky. Thanks for all that you do

      On a stationary machine like the HQ Sweet Sixteen or Capri there aren't any feed dogs to grab the fabric so you can guide the fabric without stretching it! And you will want to use pins through all of the layers, just remember to remove the pins before stitching over them :) Channel locks aren't available on stationary machines so the Square feet are fantastic to allow you to measure the seam allowance against the edge of the foot.

    I find that some minky stretches more than others. I like to have enough extra on all the sides that I can get a full roll on the take-up bar. It keeps the tesion equal.

    Also, Put Painter's tape on it where ever you need to cut it. Cut through the tape, and you will not get any messy "poofs" everywhere! Then just pull the tape off.

    Hi gals, hey, you never said what kind of needle to use and do you have a video actually quilting on minky?

    • @HandiQuilter
      @HandiQuilter  Рік тому

      Use the needle size that matches your thread. We generally use a sharp needle. A trilobal polyester thread works well to prevent pulling the minky up through the top. As for other videos, I can't think of any off the top of my head.

    How do you check tension with a minty back and cotton front

    • @HandiQuilter
      @HandiQuilter  5 місяців тому

      You will check it the same as you would with any other fabric. Minkee definitely helps hide tension issues more though!! There are several tension videos that go over that topic on our channel.

    Hi Denise and Kim! Thank you for this great information. What is the 'narrowest' you would suggest foryour minky strips using this technique? If bamboo batting is not available, what other type of batting do you suggest?

    • @denisedowdrick5268
      @denisedowdrick5268 2 роки тому

      Use low loft batting for easiest strip piecing with minky. I've used strips as narrow as 2 inches

    I thought this was all excellent information, I just did NOT understand how you did the binding on the back side of Quilt? Is that Allison Domestic machine?

    • @HandiQuilter
      @HandiQuilter  Рік тому

      You can attach the binding to the front of the quilt on the longarm. You then either stitch the back by hand or with a domestic machine.

    What needle size do you use on the milky?

    • @HandiQuilter
      @HandiQuilter  9 місяців тому

      You will want to match the needle size to the thread weight that you are using.

    What thread and needle did you use?

    • @denisedowdrick5268
      @denisedowdrick5268 2 роки тому +2

      I recommend using a slippery thread, like Magnifico from Superior Threads, or Glide from FilTec. A size 18 needle is the perfect size for these threads. A FG (ballpoint) tip can be helpful with knit fabrics like minkee.

    What needle did you use

    • @HandiQuilter
      @HandiQuilter  9 місяців тому

      A regular sharp needle. Choose the size depending on the weight of thread you are using.

    I have a cuddle kit with some very furry narrow strips. Any tips on dealing with the narrow strips, especially how to hold down while stitching across? Thanks for the great videos.

    • @denisedowdrick5268
      @denisedowdrick5268 2 роки тому

      With really narrow strips I would probably add a few pins in the strip to stabilize the strip before stitching. While stitching, make sure to remove the pin as you approach it so you don't stitch over the pin.

    What about loading with Red snappers?

    • @denisedowdrick5268
      @denisedowdrick5268 2 роки тому

      I don't personally use Red snappers but I think it would be helpful to have a little bit longer backing than with other loading methods because it looks like snappers can take up a bit more fabric when loading. Be careful to avoid stretching the minkee when snapping in place.
