Probably because he knows (and his doctors likely told him) that while injuries can be bad and a painful recovery, re-injuries can be much much worse...recovery could take many months or even years in that case (or not at all).

  • @CoryThomure

You have no idea how much I needed this video tonight. About 2 years ago I started my weight loss journey. You guys were a tremendous inspiration to me. Over the course of a year I went from 314 lbs to 259. I was looking and feeling good. I loved the process and the progress I was making. Then a year ago I sustained an injury while working out. I strained my left trap and herniated my C4-C5 disk, which resulted in a bad nerve impingement. After a month of physical therapy I was able to regain the use of my left arm. In the year since I've allowed the frustration of it all to get the better of me and now I'm back where I started, only with the nagging reminder that my left shoulder and arm will probably never be 100%. I started tracking macros today and worked out for the first time in a long while. I felt so defeated at my lack of strength and endurance and the fact that I've let myself gain almost all my weight back until I saw your video. Thanks for the inspiration yet again Hudson.

@@CoryThomure Hey, I wish you good luck, I hope you lose all weight or better, get jacked in the process!
I'm sorry to make it about myself but I got a L5-S1 herniated disc couple years ago with the good ol' constant nerve pain which had me cry like a baby for months and obviously got fat as fuck in the process. Been a year since I decided to lose weight. I went from 250 to 170 and although I weigh less, the back pain along with excruciating sciatica is still pretty much the same.
Do you have an idea about how to reduce the pain or how to deal with it ?

Back in my running days I had strained both quads and both hamstrings twice, popped a ligament in my knee, had crippling post-sprain tendonitis in my right anlke and had two stress fractures, the last of which laid me up for three months. In the decade since then I've had a benign tumor removed from the bone in my right shoulder, herniated a disc in my lower back and done something to my upper neck that kept me going to the chiropractor twice a week for three months. All of those injuries kept me out of the gym and working regain my previous fitness levels for over a year. Never did anything as severe as your ankle injury Hudson, but I know how tough it is working your way back from injuries. Stay tough and stay buff.

Hey Buff Dudes, just wanted to share my story here. I was run over by a truck while riding my bike home from work, about a year and a half ago. My left arm looked about how your leg did. I have had 2 surgeries. The first was just a plate and screws and I was about where you are now, but during PT there was a nagging pain around 6 months and the Dr determined the break wasn't fully healing, so we tried 6 months of electric stimulation, but ultimately needed to go back under the knife for a bone graft from another part of my bone to the break. It's now been about 20 months since the accident and my Dr and PT have finally cleared me. I am getting back into the gym now and have hired a personal trainer. I have 50 lbs to lose and a long road to that goal, but am using myfitnesspal and working to get better at fitness every day. The lesson of my story is listen to your body, and listen to your doctors, they are in your best interest, contrary to what I used to think when I was younger. Also I want to say that I know exactly what you mean when you say the hardest part is mental - I totally agree!

I’m 69 and lifted steadily/aggressively into my late 50s...... early 60s. My diet however was always sloppy. Lots of protein, no veggies, lots of milk, whey powder, pizza and multi vit, glucosamine chondroitin but never enough hydration. I learned that I was confusing thirst for hunger. Guess I’m a slow learner. As a contractor/carpenter I was always on my feet, climbing, bending.....carpenter stuff...and rationalized that my calorie burn was above average, that I could eat whatever I wanted. But even with that attitude I rarely ate bread, cookies, cake, donuts. I’ve always managed to avoid that stuff. Then came joint problems...elbow surgery to remove fragments outside of the joint, right elbow. .....shoulder joint pain..a spur and start up of arthritis followed by steroid injections...3 so far in left shoulder joint. Hip joint pain miraculously “cured” by one steroid shot. Then problems with a daughter diagnosed as bipolar plus she’s a recovering alcoholic. Bla bla...i stopped training for 2 plus years and turned to shit fast. Here’s my point. A month ago I decided to swallow my pride, go down into my weight room and start at the very bottom. At 69 I’m thinking that if I don’t continue...this may be my last chance to regain my strength and reestablish self discipline and the joy , pride and confidence which comes at the end of a good workout. . In 30 days, using absolutely strict form, with embarrassingly light weight, I am seeing gains in strength. I’m adding weight. I do basic exercises and use a hip sled and smith chair. I’m optimistic. Next day pain is muscular, not joints. I’ve considered photoing my progress to encourage other old farts but haven’t as of yet. But I repeat, I’m optimistic. I’ve also been clean of cigarettes for 30 days. I finished bench pressing yesterday with a few reps of 135 which is a long way from where I was when I quit due to pain. Back then I was doing reps with 220 and a typical workout included 15000# of benching with strict form . Average maybe but not bad for an old man. I’ve got a long way to go to get back. I’m hoping my joints will make it. And I’ve never stopped working. I’ll retire when I can’t walk. Dave Heitman Semper Fidelis

I would hazard and guess and I'm not a PT like Brandon but I would assume a lot of unilateral work would be the best way to combat imbalances with your muscles. Obviously Hudson will be able to no doubt comment too since he's going through the process.
This would mean dropping what size of weights you're lifting and leaving your ego in the changing room.

Best to get over such embarrassment. It tends to lead one into advancing too quickly, which will only set you back. I was born without my left pectoral muscle, and though I know I can never be a bench press champ, when I was young a dumb I built up my triceps to the point where I could reverse bench 315 at 200lbs. Now, I have the beginnings of arthritis in that shoulder and a tough shoulder arm workout uses pushups and 35s. I’m not what I forced myself to be.
Nevertheless, even though I’ve always been strong I will never have a true beach physique. Sometimes I go through stretches where I don’t want to workout because “what’s the point?” I still work to be athletic and most people don’t know I’m missing my pec because they’d never suspect a guy who can do 50 push-ups has no pectoral muscle. But I’ll never look like Brandon.
I feel this pain. I constantly have to force myself to keep going even though my best days are behind me. But the only other option is to die.
    Keep it up, Hudson.

I completely agree with what you said about having more motivation.
I was a classic fatso until about 2 years ago. Nothing extreme but enough to be visually indentified as a fatso and enough to make me feel like I'm about to develop my own eco-system around my equator. One day, due to FINALLY being overfed with just sucking it up (and with all sorts of junk food, naturally), I cleared out almost my entire fridge food supply and filled it up with chicken brest, eggs, green vegies and so on. In a matter of 6ish months I've lost around 12 kilos. It was my first time inside of a gym in my life (rather than looking at it from the outside) and I had finally started getting an ARM, an actual man-shape arm, chest, back and so on after approx. a year. Would've been much longer than that if it weren't for my buffed up friend (that I consider to be more of a brother to me than my own brother) to guide me. Things were going great and even tho I did not see much progress on myself, people around me would more so often throw a compliment or two my way so I knew I'm certainly on the right track.
Then came the August of 2018, 1st of August interestingly enough. While heading back from work, I've been involved in a traffic accident of unknown circumstances with my motorcycle. That resulted in me being in a full body cast brace or, how I like to call it, 'armor' due to a number of bone fractures from and including skull to mid-back. Naturally, I had to spend a bit over 4 horrific months in it without being able to move much farther than my own toilet back home. I would say that first 3 months were the main time period where it all went wrong 'cause I've gained back almost everything kilos-wise that I have lost prior to the crash, not to mention lost all the muscle tone throughout the body. I do know why the excess kilos came back tho! I was eating absolutely anything and everything that my family has brought me to my room and it was like that ever since I woke up in a hospital 2 weeks after the crash with no memory or knowledge of what has happened and what is happening. At that point, watching your diet not only seems insignificant, useless and meaningless but you don't even think about it, you don't know a healthy or unhealthy diet even exist.
After getting out of the full body cast to a simple neck collar and being able to actually shower like a human being again, after some time I started watching what I eat again and boy, do I have gym motivation now or what.... It's still too early to hit the weights again but I'm not far from it at this point and once I start doing it again, there is no telling where or when I'll stop. If ever.
So grind on, dude! Broken bones are nothing but a momentary setback for you and a huge motivation feed to your brain!

Hell ya take it slow and keep it going Hudson!! I was jacked til I broke my wrists and got two degrees. Got fat after that but back on it now. Happens to the best of us! That early schedule is very important. You’ve got it down.
