  • Xootr Mg (magnesium) Scooter Review.
    Review of my Xootr Mg scooter. The deck of this scooter is wide, strong, and light. The wheels are made from ultra-low-resistant polyurethane. The front handle brake ensures a safe, smooth ride.

    I live in NYC and I use a Oxelo Town 9 scooter. My friend has a Xootr Mg and we swapped scooters for a week. Overall, I hated the Xootr. The wheels on the Xootr are an incredible feat of engineering, far better than the wheels on the Oxelo. I agree with you, for smooth surfaces there is no better scooter than the Xootr. NYC streets and sidewalks, however, are mess. The Oxelo has front and rear suspension plus larger wheels and a deck that sits higher. The Oxelo is not as fast as the Xootr on smooth surfaces but the Oxelo is faster than the Xootr on rough surfaces. The Oxelo is more stable at higher speeds too. The Xootr is much lighter than the Oxelo but the Oxelo is far easier and faster to fold.
    These are the five things I hated about the Xootr. 1) Deck is too low for rough surfaces. 2) It rattles. 3) Handlebars are too narrow which makes the Xootr less stable when turning and at higher speeds (too narrow for carrying bags of groceries too). 4) The backwards front fork throws off center of gravity over the front wheel. 5) The folding mechanism is cumbersome (even the new quick release).
    After our the swap my friend decided to buy the Oxelo Town 9 and he no longer rides the Xootr Mg. After many years of riding my beloved Oxelo Town 9, I need an upgrade. My next scooter will be a Swift One Marine.

    This is a great looking scooter. However the ride is tough from what I hear. Obviously the wheels are legendary, but would it be a good idea to put different wheels on it for rougher longer rides? Some pneumatic tires? Obviously there are other scooters designed for offroad and rough roads, but this scooter is lighter and has a handle break. What do you think?

    Hi. Thanks for the review. I like it that after you talked about the scooter you actually rode on it. I've never rode on one but I'm planning on buying one because it's compact and can be carried inside malls.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. Is it hard to learn to balance & steer on kick scooter?
    2. Is this model heavier or lighter than regular ones?
    3. What type of shoes should one wear when riding scooters? I'm concern with the wear & tear on shoes.
    4. How long before your kicking feet gets tired riding scooters?
    5. Do you interchange your kicking feet?
    Thanks.

    • @SpectraNyte

      Hey, I know its been awhile, but I can answer most questions for you. I'm a pretty experienced kick scooter rider. Right now I ride a Razor A5, but have been considering upgrading to the Xootr.
      1. Balance- It doesn't really take any more balance than riding a bike. Just take some time in an empty parking lot to get the feeling for turning/balance.
      2. Weight- I'm not sure what you'd consider a 'regular' kick scooter, but for comparison, the Razor A5 is one of the lightest larger wheeled scooters on the market at about 9 pounds. I believe Xootr MG is about a pound heavier, possibly because of the alloy, and wider deck.
      3. Tennis/running shoes are best in my opinion. Don't worry too much about wear and tear unless you plan to take your scooter 5+ miles a day.
      4. Tiredness- Believe it or not, it will actually be the foot/leg thats on the deck that will get tired more so than your kicking foot, due to the fact that the 'deck' foot is making these little up and down movements at you kick the ground with your other foot. How quickly you get tired depends on your fitness level and the terrain you're riding on.
      5. Learning to interchange, or switch as some call it, is a pretty essential part of riding a kick scooter, especially if you're going longer distances (over a mile.) I believe with the Xootr MG's wider deck, it would make switching easier.
      Hope this helped!

      @ccchhhrrriiisss100 4 роки тому +2

      I agree with Spectra Nyte. Here are a few more points/opinions:
      1.) Balance and steering is fairly easy because momentum makes balancing less difficult. Ever tried to skip a stone in a lake or pond? Normally, that rock would sink. However, the momentum allows it to skirt the surface of the water. The good news is that a scooter has a low center of gravity; so, even when you slow down or stop, you don't fall over (like some people might do when learning how to ride a bike).
      2.) It's fairly light given the quality of its construction and the Mg (solid magnesium base). It is considerably lighter than a child's bicycle. I will add one other thing: This is MUCH lighter than an electric scooter. If your electric scooter runs out of charge, you'll get a workout if you have to kick your way home.
      3.) I've used it in "nice" comfortable business casual shoes -- and it works great for it. I'd suggest that you only avoid wearing "hard" soles (the kind that you find on strict dress shoes, women's heels or cowboy boots).
      4.) My feet don't really get tired on this. Kicking isn't really an issue -- because a single kick on these wheels provide a lot of thrust/momentum. You can ride for a long time on a single kick. And, of course, it is vastly less tiring or strenuous than walking (hence the reasons why people buy them). Scooters are very popular in the Silicon Valley, Stanford campus and in urban settings in the San Francisco Bay Area cities.
      5.) Yes...but rarely. It's not difficult to switch feet.

    I just got one today, the Cruz model with the birch board. The rattling is extremely loud! You mentioned body weight eliminating noise. I'm only 115 lbs, do you think I'm not heavy enough? Or, do you think it's the wooden board? Are the metal decks quieter? Maybe I got a defective product? The other issue is I felt EVERY crack in the sidewalk, including the normal smooth grooves between sections. I thought the Kick Ped might be better, but they have a fix stem height (small for 5'5" and above). I put my Xootr at 35" just to see how the Kick Ped would be. It seems ok, but I don't know if that's because I'm new to riding. Maybe as I get experienced, I would want it lower. What do you think? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks for doing the review!

    • @TABReviews
      @TABReviews  5 років тому

      Hey Abby, thank you for the comment! Where is the rattling coming from? My handlebar adjuster used to rattle, but I figured a way to get it to stop. My board will only rattle if I am going over HUGE bumps, I don't think your board should be rattling much at all! And yes, you do feel every crack with these scooters... These scooters are perfect for smooth, flat pavement. They don't do as well with the bumps! I noticed that when I put my handlebars lower, you actually feel the bumps less. Maybe you could try that? Let me know what happens!

      @@TABReviews Thanks for replying! I think it's the wheel and fender banging into each other over bumps. Very rattly over sidewalks, pedestrians cleared a wide berth, as they looked back apprehensively. I hate making a scene so not cool. When I took it on a smooth road after reading your reply and thinking it over, no rattle. On the smooth road, it was too fast for me (any decline at all: precarious). I wanted to push more, glide less, because I wanted the cross training benefit as a runner. It's a beauty and I loved the design, front brake, accessories (upgraded grips, strap, bag), and adjustable height. Just wasn't for me. In handling, it's a sports car and I was looking for a pickup truck, I guess you could say. Thanks for your review and for helping me isolate the rattling issue.

    I've ridden several Xootrs in the past. For myself and many other riders, the handlebars are too narrow, at 12.6 inches wide. The narrow handlebars make the Xootr twitchy and unstable at high speeds. In contrast, my current Oxelo Town 9 scooter has 20 inch wide handlebars, creating a far more comfortable and stable ride. Other scooters have 17 inch wide handlebars. Xootr's advantage over other scooters is legendary, especially with their speedy wheels. Unfortunately, the principal designer has passed away and innovation has ground to a halt.
    There isn't an easy way to replace Xootr handlebars with aftermarket bars as Xootr bars were engineered specifically for their scooters. This leaves us with handlebar extensions and grips to make the handlebar wider. What solutions has the kick scooter community come up with to address this problem? Are there any handlebar extensions or grips that will make the bars wider? Please share your thoughts.

    Is there a way to get wider handlebars? Wider bars would be more stable at higher speeds and I find that the Xootr bars are too narrow. There are other manufacturers with wider bars but, of course, none of them have wheels as fast as Xootr.

      Yeah this is the advantage of a Razor or the more affordable Walmart knock off Razor where you can put in a handle bar. I took a 7/8 wood dowel, cut it two feet long and just electric taped the whole thing to make it black to match and make it stay. It not only took away some vibration but the stability and control make it way more fun to ride. It also looks cooler for some reason.

    I'm thinking of getting this to commute around 3.5 miles, outwards around 6-6.30am and back around 10-11pm. What do you think? In your opinion, how long would such a commute take on a Xootr?

    • @TABReviews
      @TABReviews  5 років тому +1

      This is a great question. I think it all depends on your commute. Does your commute have any hills at all? The Xootr would be perfect for your commute if you are going to be riding on smooth, perfect cement. With no cracks or bumps. If there are cracks or bumps, I'd actually suggest getting a scooter that rides better over uneven surfaces.
      In response to how long it would take, it depends on many factors, such as whether there are hills or how fit/athletic you are. It also depends on how hard you will be riding. I used to ride my scooter to work, about 2.5 miles away from my house. It would take me about 15 minutes each way. I hope this information helps!

    • @gnostie
      @gnostie 5 років тому +1

      @@TABReviews This is very helpful, thank you. My 3.5 miles are flat as a pancake, and the roads are fairly smooth. Am I fit? No, I'm lazy and enjoy comfort. But I'll get fitter as I ride this thing every day. Was your 2.5 mile commute hilly? How hard did you have to ride to cover it in 15 minutes?

    • @TABReviews
      @TABReviews  5 років тому

      @@gnostie It was actually downhill almost all the way there. So it took me closer to 10 minutes to get there, and about 20 minutes or so to get back. I never really broke a sweat on the way there, but I almost always did on the way back because of the hill!

    • @ccchhhrrriiisss100
      @ccchhhrrriiisss100 2 роки тому +1

      @@veganpizzarider9166 - Yes. I've had great experience with it. It is a fantastic lightweight scooter that is surprisingly durable and well-made. I will say this though: Kick scooting is exercise. If you plan to take it to work or school, you'll feel the workout on both of your legs.
      The wide base is great for both stability and comfort. I wear a size 12 (US) shoe (45 EU) and it was a great width even for my feet. I'm slightly taller than six-feet in height (~6'1" or 1.85m) and it did not feel "small" for me. This is because it is adjustable so that a short or tall person can use it. However, I suspect that it would be less comfortable for anyone 6'3" (1.92m) or taller.
      The only negative for the Xootr scooter is the lack of shocks (which aren't common in most scooters anyway). When you are scooting over cobblestone streets, you'll feel it quite a bit. You'll also feel pretty much every line on a sidewalk (where one concrete sidewalk block meets another).
      Personally, I have enjoyed it quite a bit. I sometimes take it on Caltrain (it folds quite nicely) and scoot with it to and from the stations in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is a time saver over walking -- and it is a lot of fun.
      On the other hand, Costco offers a great alternative option if scooting on a daily or regular basis is not something that you're prepared for. I bought a Jetston Bolt Pro e-bike from Costco. It cost $299 at Costco -- a tremendous value for a good quality e-bike. It's available on Costco.com (but it costs quite a bit more -- $399 -- if you order it from the Costco website). It is cheaper in the local Costco warehouse stores.
      It's a folding, compact electric bicycle that can travel 15-30 miles per charge (15 mile just using the battery and 30 miles with pedal assist). You can use this bike to pedal manually (without battery), pedal with battery (which boosts speed with each pedal) or on the battery alone. It is adjustable (for size), charges quickly and comes with headlight/tail light).
      I've found myself using this quite a bit because it is so easy to use. It has a throttle -- but it isn't complicated to learn (like motorcycles or some other ebikes). You simply turn the throttle and it goes. If you let go of the throttle, it stops (and you simply coast). It even has a cruise control button.
      You can use this bike even when it has no charge because it is, well, a bicycle. The top speed is about 15 mph (24 kph) but I've actually gone 22 mph on mine.
      In my opinion, both the Xootr scooter and the Jetson Bolt Pro (make sure you see the PRO model) is the best option for daily commuting. Both are compact and folding. Both are very durable and well-built. However, the Xootr is not powered, so it is 100% leg-powered. The Jetson Bolt Pro is both.
      So, I would give it the advantage to the Jetson Bolt Pro if you don't mind a small, compact bicycle that folds. If you only want a high-quality non-electric scooter, then the Xootr is fantastic. Personally, I like both of them.
      Thanks for the response -- and reply if you have any other questions!
