One Big Unpopular Opinion - DmC: Devil May Cry Retrospective & Review

  • Surrounded by controversy and despised by many, DmC: Devil May Cry is a very divisive game. In this retrospective and review, I speak out on behalf of the countless fans who genuinely love this game, and give my reasons why this game is deserving of praise.
DmC: Devil May Cry is a reboot from Capcom's popular Devil May Cry series. The game features the series' signature combat mechanics, but deviates from the Japanese style of storytelling, in favour of a more westernized approach. This is one reason why there was a significant amount of backlash from some of the DMC community.
I take a look at everything this game has to offer (not the DLC) and judge it on it's own merits, as well as in comparison to the rest of the games in the Devil May Cry series.

I made this review for 2 reasons. First, I wanted to. And second, to give an argument against the countless negative reviews for DmC: Devil May Cry.
There's still so much I could say about this cracking game! But alas, there's only so much I can hold the average viewer's butt in their seats. I think the point comes across well enough.
I wanted to speak out on behalf of so many comments on UA-cam that praise this game. I feel, despite this video's title, that loving this game isn't going to be as unpopular as time goes on.
I hope you enjoyed this presentation. Please give the video a Thumbs Up if you did, and Subscribe! Check out my other videos. I upload all kinds of content!
    See you all soon.

I find it comforting to be amongst DmC fans and level-headed critics.
People keep saying that it should be its own title and shouldn't share DMC but I see it being comparable with Final Fantasy with their standalone installment each time.
Granted, Final Fantasy are their own standalone installments. So if (and it's a big _if_) they do a sequel, DmC and DMC are standalone installments of the entire Devil May Cry franchise.

The fact that DMC 5 took some ideas from this game speaks volumes about how influential it was. The narrator for the style rank system, the name cards when enemies are introduced, the slow mo when killing the last enemy. There are many flourishes the DMC 5 devs implemented in their latest entry that were first introduced in DmC Devil May Cry. Rightly so, since these additions were some of the best things about DmC.
Thing is, DmC still does it better when it comes to the S-SSS style voice. You can't deny how badass SAVAGE sounded, or rewarding hearing SENSATIONAL was.
My biggest gripe however was the absence of taunts! With how good the animations are in DmC, can you imagine how good the taunts would have been.

    • @stinkfinga4918
      @stinkfinga4918 Місяць тому +1

The entire plot of 5 is directly tied to how DmC gave Vergil his own unique Devil Trigger allowing him to split himself.
Dantes alt colors in 4SE and 5 are the same as DmC Dante.
      The Void? DmC.
      Combo previews before purchase? DmC.
      The world falling apart? DmC.
      City atmosphere? DmC.
      Slo-mo intro? DmC.
"Fuck you" to a boss? Yup, DmC.
It's sad we were supposed to get a sequel, Itsuno was so mad about it he almost quit. But it's clear he wanted to keep up a lot of what they were doing in honor of their efforts and in spite of how awful Capcom was for them to work for.

I thoroughly enjoyed switching between my weapons (going from Rebellion to Osiris to Eryx) and putting them together to form long combos that end with that flashy slow mow. It’s badass and with the metal behind it you feel like a true devil-hunter lol. I wish the characters had more emotional depth but with the clashing viewpoints of Ninja Theory and Capcom they couldn’t really make the game theirs (if that makes any sense) which led to the story not being god-tier. If the story had some more moments (cutscene wise) it would give Dante, Vergil, and Kat more of a connection leading to Dante’s maturity at the end of the game. I used to be very upset with Spider-Man 4 getting cancelled and rebooted but after giving TASM1 a chance, I really enjoyed the new suit and Andrew's performance that I had watched the deleted scenes and played the tie-in game. As for DmC, I was very curious why a game would get so much hate when I hated DMC4 for making Nero who was very unlikeable to me in terms of personality and gameplay, so I tried the reboot and I enjoyed that too. DmC Dante was more grounded and relatable compared to Nero and comparing him with mainline Dante would seem unfair imo and managed to find purpose and responsibility within Kat, a human who wasn't as useless as Kyrie and wasn't made for decorated fanservice.
DMC3 had a bit of anime vibes but 4 and 5 went too far and turned it into a gimmicky shonen anime that targeted a younger demographic, unfortunately. That's Capcom for you.

NT didn't really have a choice. They wanted to make Dante closer to how he was in the first game, it was Capcom that forced their hand in that, among other things they were wrongly ridiculed for. You can see their early concepts are 100% original Dante. Then they get weirder and weirder and further from the source as per Capcoms demands.
A sequel was indeed good for the go. We were seriously gonna get one, but... due to the problems they had working with Capcom (and likely needless backlash from losers in the community who tried to boycott it) they decided to quit working with Capcom.

      @moogymog1722 8 місяців тому +3

I understand that since the punk rock look is all about going against conventions during its peak, like the uneven shortened hair, wilder colorful hair and spikes.
But Dante's a real punk, whilst Kelly's a Hollyweird Blood-drinking poser with a bad and questionable history. No demon needs to make shit up about Kelly🤢

I like this one a lot too. I like the chemistry between Vergil and Dante once Dante becomes less of a punk. I like the 'twist' of Vergil seeking to rule Hell at the end too. The entire time you think he's your good hearted bro then nah. Was just manipulative. The OG DMC games never had these kind of story arcs. (I know these arcs are cliche but in a DMC game, it's worth noting)

Thank you 😊 I love this game, flaws and all!!
Story: I was actually disappointed. Ninja Theory has great story telling points and showed so much in their current Senua game! I have a feeling Capcom's higher ups intervened too much and had little faith on both their own team and on NT. And that's sad. I love the main two characters, Dante and Kat, but I wished there were more emotional moments though. I can see there's a lot of baggage between these two, yet there's never any progression (not into romance, but I see them as kindred spirits). I guess it was supposed to be for a sequel, but we know there may never be 👀
Gameplay: it just works! I had finished it at the hardest and I understand it's also for newcomers. I missed the taunting though.
Music/Art: Chef's kiss 😘 just stellar! I don't understand how there aren't any metal/rock fans to this game that NEEDS a throbbing sound to pump us up!! People disliked DMC5 Subhuman, a theme for Dante, but it fits sooo well for him! The musicians clearly took notes from Combichrist and I feel people just deny it, didn't want to be associated with the reboot. And Noisia!! They made most of the ambient sounds that, if you told them it can be for Silent Hill or perhaps another industrial horror game, they'd be none the wiser. But it's for DmC and it works! I especially love Kat's Theme. What a somber sound, reflective of her character but also the deeply wounded themes amongst the characters!
Great video and a perspective about what the heck is Capcom on about these days. I have to say, I haven't seen much original titles on them, only sequels. It's not bad but how do we maintain a long series fresh? So sorry and TLDR, just stumbled upon the channel when you commented on one of the DmC cutscenes videos!

We could have a game that focuses on the emotional aspect between the two brothers. None of the mainline games showed me how close they were and Kat is an amazing addition. It was my first and my favorite DMC game. the gameplay's fast pace was a lot more enjoyable to me than the likes of DMC3, 4 or 1. and even considering the base game's flaws, such as no lock on and color coded enemies, the gameplay still kicks a lot of ass.
as for the story, i thought it was enjoyable as long as you don't take it seriously which you shouldn't, its devil may cry lol. the aesthetics and world building of the game was fantastic as much as it strayed forward from the original series, it had a lot of potential. i'm sure if capcom didn't force ninja theory that much we would have gotten a way better story than what was delivered (the concept arts leaned heavily towards the rebellious and psychology aspects of dante. the aesthetics were like the early 30/40's of Europe while at the same time it was modern. the character designs resembled the og counterparts while also staying different. like a samurai look for vergil and a detective look for dante)
the music really got me into the metal genre and i still listen to it from time to time. it was a really good starting point to get into the franchise and i hope someday we get a multiverse/crossover type of game between the two series or probably a sequel.
i really enjoyed your video and your point of view. it was a breath of fresh air.

Thats exactly what im saying. Honestly I totally agree. Take the dialogue for example. I genuinely enjoy the dialogue because the game is over the top vulgar and grotesque and is fully aware of that. While the game doesnt take itself too seriously, it is able to pull off serious moments when they need to happen while still maintaining the humorous charm the game carried along with it the entire way. Comparing it to DMC 5, I feel that its edgy for the sake of being edgy while not poking fun at itself the way DmC did. Just my take on it.

@@MorphinGamingNot just that. It really freaks me out that some people, that "majority" some idiot wants me to believe, still say DmC dialogues were bad, while never mentioning it of 5.
In terms of characters, the reboot eats 5 and it's not even close.
Dante and Nero are fine, but V is just lame, Vergil is Vergil, he has not changed or evolved at all, and the other 3, Nico is just stupid, and makes me want to cut her in half with Red Queen every time she opens her mouth, Trish has like 2 lines in the whole game, and Lady is at best, as good as Quiet was in MGS5, if you know that game.
The villain? Vergil again, and that joke of Urizen before him.
But hey, for the "majority", the reboot is the weakest point for sure...

I know this is weird, but DmC: Dmc has my favorite control of Dante, especially combat. I like it much more than even the latest release DmC 5.
I guess this has to do with that this was my first Dmc game. Combos are more free flow, and changing weapons mid-combo is so easy and satisfying to do.
When I went back and play other older Dmc game, I found them extremely clunky.
Even in Dmc 5, I rarely switch weapons during my multiple play through, because the control scheme doesn't really encourage doing so, besides you also don't really need to. Technically you can do it, but it feel so weird to pull off.

The amount of people who dismiss the story in this game because they are used to being spoon fed the story arch half way through every game with character ques. I don't think they understand that this story is being told completely from the perspective of Dante himself. So the game doesn't give you any hints as to which direction it is really going until Dante himself actually arrives there. You actually have to play through the game to get the full story instead of figuring it out long before the story reaches that conclusion itself. And it forces you to actually pay attention to the story or you wont understand what is happening.

  • @stinkfinga4918
    @stinkfinga4918 Місяць тому +4

The 'community' will never admit it because it's their favorite game in the series, but DMC3: Dante's Awakening is actually the first reboot of the series.
    Prepare yourselves...
Despite it being sold as a prequel, it's the first game to change the story as well as Dantes characteristics. People argue that it's because he was still a teenager, but his persona from the first game is never seen again. He remains the same character he was in 3 for the rest of the series. It had the highest marketing budget and was accompanied with a manga and anime series to try and stimulate hype. Dante in 3 became the definitive rendition of the character thereafter.
In the first game its said he lost his mother and brother 20 years prior, leaving Dante as the sole survivor. He is a devil hunter not for fun, but because he is on a path for vengance.
His only confirmed age in the games is between 20-30 in DMC1 (most sources say approximately 28). If he loses his family 20 years earlier, it means DMC3 takes place when he was around 8 years old...
Of course, this is not the only problem. Its detailed in the enemy files that Nelo Angelo is the possesed soul of Vergil... because he originally died as a child. However at the end of 3, Vergil challenges Mundus and losses, corrupting him, and ultimately turning him into Nelo Angelo which he is only seen as in 1 (and a special costume in 3). No matter which route you go, Vergil is defeated for good in 1, as his amulet falls into Dantes hands and he dissipates into nothing, unlike when you defeat him twice before and he just whisps away to retreat. Mundus also confirms that Vergil is defeated.
Yet, he pops up inexplicably in DMC4SE, and is the main villain in 5.
So what gives with such blatant errors in continuity? Why exactly did Dante forget the anime sword fights he and his brother would have throughout their lives?
Better yet... where did Rebellion come from? Dantes own signature sword? In 1 his signature weapons are his handguns, Ebony & Ivory.
I'll fucking tell you, it all came from Itsunos asshole when Capcom gave him the game to direct instead of the people who actually created it. He didnt know wtf do to and thats why 2 is the entry you're not supposed to play. No, the community says you have to play 3, 1 (if you want), 4, and 5. Why? Because they dont want to admit 3 changes everything making the first game one big plot hole. It is a reboot that changes Dante, changes Vergil, and changes the story itself, not at all unlike the SECOND reboot, DmC.
I will say 5 tries to remedy this by explaining Vergil had Shadow, Griffon, and Nightmare as his handlers while he tried to gain that elusive 'more power' hes always after. What ACTUALLY happened was his mom simply thought Vergil was already dead so only Dante was saved. Of course, none of this is ever mentioned in their anime sword fights in 3, theyre simply rivals who forgot the plot. Ones good, ones bad... why? Cuz its a goddamn reboot and Itsuno never knew wtf he was doing with the story.
Enter Nero. How does he exist? Dunno. Who did Vergil bang to create him? Dunno. Maybe they'll cover it in DMC6 now that Nero is effectively the main character since 4, because contrary to popular belief, no one liked Dante in 3 at the time it was released. Ruben Langdon himself has confirmed this.
If youve made it this far, understand this lengthy comment exists to remind you there really is no 'canon continuity in the DMC series. Literally everything is up in the air as the games go on. Not only that, but that the entire reason DMC5 exists is not because DmC was a failed reboot, its because Ninja Theory refused Capcoms request to make a sequel and signed a contract with Microsoft. DmC2 had a green light, both Capcom and Itsuno wanted it, but because of Capcom not allowing Ninja Theory to have creative freedom, they bailed for another company.
The problems Ninja Theory went through are the same problems people have with DmC. They wanted to retain Dantes appearance and attitude from 1, Capcom said no dice, make everything as far removed from the original vision as possible. Make color coded enemies. Hes half angel half devil. Give Vergil a derby.
Its on record Itsuno was so upset with how Capcom handled DmC that he threatened to quit the company as well, so they folded and said he could make one more and have full creative freedom.
No matter what the cringey and braindead community states as fact, DmC is a fucking great game, and a great Devil May Cry game with the best atmosphere, and the best soundtrack. If Capcom suits werent so fucking dumb, we'd likely have TWO more games instead of a half assed special edition of 4, and DMC5 at this point.
Thank you for your time... and enjoy the diamond the community forced in the rough that is DmC: Devil May Cry

Got the game couple of days ago and I was surprised by how pleasant my experience was.
My first game in the series was 3 and I loved it despite me being 12 at the time and playing in easy mode, later when I turned 15 a couple of months ago I got 5 and it was as good as everyone said it was but not as good as 3.
So now I was scared since I wanted to try it out since I first heard about it but when I got it...holy hell it's underrated! It has its fair share of problems and the story was...well, I'm not going to say it's worst than 2 but it ain't winning any awards but the gameplay surprised me, took getting used but it's fast, it's fluid, and it feels great! The animations especially with Dante are something I enjoy due to it shows how inexperienced he is. He stumbles after putting weight into his attacks, nearly falling after doing Streak, I love it!
The music, my favorite part of this game is fucking amazing! Introduced me to Combichrist and Noisia one of the best soundtracks in the series. (second going to 5, first going to 3.)
The environment is like something out of an acid trip, seriously I can't get over how nice no GORGEOUS they look. Especially in the area, Dante gets Ophion.
The dialogue is (in my opinion) so bad it's amazing like Holy hell the writers must've gotten a raise for how amazing the writing is. It's bad yet it fits with the personality of the game, especially with Dante. With each line it makes me howl like a hyena but some lines make me happy, like Dante and Vergin's interactions. They act like brothers albeit on the final mission while a fun fight Vergin's change to being evil felt shoved in like it they couldn't think of anything else.
My real negatives are, that the concepts being wasted originally Dante was going to have both a Devil and Angel trigger presumably via the same way you activate Devil and Angel mode that would've made Dante's Devil trigger interesting to me.
The face models need to be sculpted like sculpted especially Vergin's.
Kat didn't do anything here, compared to Lady and Trish to me she just felt like a background character waiting for Dante.
Sparda wasn't who he was, instead of being the legendary black knight who sealed hell, he's just a demon who fell in love with an angel with no cool moments, no parts of his story even being revealed.
And finally, Vergin himself. While Dante was able to grow on me throughout the game Vergin made me distance him. Instead of being the cool and collected badass, he was in the other games, here he jumps to conclusions, makes irrational decisions, and trys to justify his actions. I'm not saying Vergil is honorable but he knew what he was doing and he didn't care that's what made his character appeal to me, he didn't care about honor, he wanted power and he was going to have it. Vergin quite literally listens to a figment of his imagination kinda (Vergil's Downfall) and then jumps to conclusions stating that Eva loved Dante more than him while taunting her with his amulet taken from Dante's hollow self.
I give a solid 7.5/10 as its own game, as a DMC game 5/10.

A positive DmC review? No wonder this one's just got under 500 likes. ^^
No, seriously, this is a fair review. I liked DMC1 when it came out (despite the most nightmarish enemy of the whole franchise: the camera), I hated DMC2 (because it sucked balls), DMC3 seemed to go in the right direction but turned out to be too damn hard for a filthy casual like me, and DMC4 was just... meh and didn't appeal to me. What they all had in common was a metric shit ton of cringe. OG Dante was such a cardboard cutout juvenile power fantasy and got showered with love by the fandom, but DmC's cringy, angsty Dante was considered sacrilege?
I vastly prefer the western take on the mythology, I love the art design, I like the level design (and I hate the design of the normal enemies, but hey, there's always something), I like the accessability. Since the first one, DMC hasn't worked for me, but this one did in spades. It's perfectly okay for reviewers to say the original series appeals more to their personal tastes, but DmC's been done dirty.

Personally I wouldn't mind a sequel to this game but separate to the main series, I wanna see what NT can do with more weapons, better graphics and even an actual demon form for dantes DT (maybe something similar to mundus) and maybe they could even have Dante slowly evolve into more of his classic self with the humor, since reboot Dante still takes everything so seriously outside of the odd joke...maybe even an introduction of a reboot lady/Trish or even (since its a reboot they can do whatever) Lucia since she only appears in dmc2...It'd give something for even the reboots haters to like about it "I hate the dmc reboot but atleast it has lucia"

I do enjoy this game wish it didn't focus so hard on being a gritty reboot, story wise rating i give it a 3.5 out of 5. I like how this vergil is more open about his trauma and I like how in the dlc it looked like he was becoming more like his or vergil would have been cool to see his story progression open to closed off. While on vergil went from blinded by trauma to having his eyes opened. I didn't like this version of dante felt like they focused way to hard on making him the exact opposite of what he was and what every bit of edgy cinema. Thought was cool but I liked some things about him but it was mostly a nope from me maybe he would have been better in the sequels.

There's a game in this genre from 2022 by name of Soulstice that has some combat inspirations from DmC: DMC (also DMC5 and Bayonetta). Tone and art direction is more like Darksiders, while the music is more like... distorted techno with choral elements.
Got some rough parts admittedly, like some enemy types and pacing, but it's well worth checking out.
Seven weapons total that have their own purposes and utility, for example. They'll always be available at any moment by just tapping a D-pad button (Left, Right and Up) once or twice.
Just over twenty different enemy types. There's about three stinkers but the rest range from "alright" to "fairly tough" and "pretty good!". In this vein, bosses are solid as well.
Plus, *really* good story and good writing.

I feel like the main reason why people really hated this game is that it represented an existential threat to the old dmc games. Imo, knowing capcom's weird thinking of making their games more western back then, if the game was popular enough, it would have replaced the mainline series. I feel like people would have been way less angry if both series could have just coexisted.

Definitely the most polarizing game in the series. It's not my favourite one, because the colour coded enemies, lack of a lock on and being 30 fps really soured things for me. And while yes, the definitive edition fixed those, for me the damage was already done. The lack of taunting and the much smaller move list also hurt it for me.
Saying that though, I still had plenty of fun with game. Aquila is my favourite among the weapons in the game. It has a spin to win and those are always fun. Plus the nightclub level was bonkers and by far the best level in the game in my opinion. Another plus was being able to try out a new move before you bought it and having that carry over into 5 was by far the best thing that 5 took from the reboot.
As for the characters and writing, I wasn't really a fan. There were some parts that got a slight chuckle out of me, but those were few and far between. Plus, Dante's snarkyness felt a little too forced at times. I don't really have any examples of what I mean by that since I haven't played it in years. As for Vergil, I really didn't like him. He seemed, I dunno, whiney at times. He didn't have that same intimidating presence that OG Vergil has.
Turning Mundus into an evil business man was pretty funny though and Bob Barbas had some great interactions with Dante in the boss fight.
As for Kat though, I have zero opinion or her. She was honestly pretty forgettable to me.
So in conclusion, while I had a lot fun with DmC, I am so happy the OG DMC is back. I missed my wacky woohoo pizza man. And while I wouldn't be against a sequel to the reboot, I would much rather Capcom remade Devil May Cry 2 so they can fix all of the issues with it and give the combat system of 3, 4 and 5.

I played the reboot just to experience how bad it is (i actually hated it when i try to played it). But throughout midgame i realized, its actually a great game with just a Devil May Cry's title name!!
With the new dmc 5 been created, it might make me forgive the reboot. But now, i didn't mind if Ninja Theory make a sequel but as long its a parallel universe.

    • @audrey9able
      @audrey9able Місяць тому +2

It's always been a parallel universe. It's been its own continuity from the start.
I particularly never understood how vitriolic the hatred is for this game. When all of the first four games have been so different from one another.
And so inconsistent anyway from the very beginning.
DMC overall was not much on Capcom's eyes, which is unfair. Trying to reboot it had been both a business and artistic endeavor.
And despite being its only title DmC manages to at least have a semblance of a cohesive timeline and narrative.
DMC has been vague, has non-canon and retconned stuff.
DMC overall as a franchise really is just a combat game.
That's it's best merit, aside from a fantasy machismo character that's also notoriously been retconned via DMC 3 because of Reuben Langdon.
I do understand DMC has potential to be deep, but that's not its point nor its goal, which is too bad.
