awesome. I had this as a kid too. Loved hearing those 4 sounds again. So weird. All the flashbacks of me driving my sister insane with the laser sound came back :)
I think Rock N Roll v2 looks the best. Military-looking, but also colourful enough for kids to wanna buy.
Sounds like the backpack has a sound chip from an old copy of Missile Command. That far right button is clearly the sound when your final city is destroyed.
So Hasbro took apart old arcade games or were these just available separately or something? Either way, their attempts to save a buck I can't put either past them. Neat detail though!
Actually, Kenner used that same sound chip in their ALIENS toy line on the Hovertread toy. The rear button fired the machine guns, the middle button fired the lasers and the left one was the mortar cannon. The other button was there on the toy but none of the weapons could activate it.
I vaguely remember that if you pressed combos of the buttons you could make different sounds
The talking battle commanders were some of the best figures of the 90s IIRC, or rather they would have been if not for the sound backpacks.
My son has both v2 and v3 of Rock and Roll. His v3 had the pegs for the shotgun. We found 2 shotguns amoung all the accessories and thought it came with the v3 figure.

If I remember correctly, there is a sort of bonus sound you can get if you mash two or more buttons at the same time. It sounds like a rumbling sort of explosion.

Anybody else think that this figure would make a good third member of the Dino-Hunter squad from 1993?
This rock and roll will go nicely with Tollbooth in the bridge layer. Hugger orange bros.
I would not define the Dreadnoks as a sub-team but a separate faction. Sub-set or sub-team tends to be associated with repainted/recycled figures such as Slaughters Marauders and Tiger Force to name but a few. Idid enjoy this figure and was happy to get it, I felt he had a better rifle more to the Rock N' Roll theme than the V2 figure.
I had that version but sadly everything disappeared in a fire when i was a teenager. But in the ashes i found the rifle 16 years later when i was looking around the old place. So thats the only thing that remain of my Gi joe collection
You think that's bad, look at his 12 inch Hall of Fame figure...wow! Rock n Roll was one of my first figures along with Breaker, I had version 1 straight arm, and version 1.5 Breaker...bought at the same time. The hardest figure for me to find out of the original 13 was Scarlett...could never find her. Great review..again GI Joe going for gimmicks instead of realism and a new sculpt. They just repainted the same figure and threw in a wonky sound effect pack. I always took those off.
I like it. I think that if someone paints the orange details, this could turn into a solid figure.

If Rock & Roll like British metal you should use shirt of Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Saxson , English Dogs , etc .
Rock and roll was available in the Dino Hunter's as well driving the repainted Desert Fox with Ambush fighting dinosaurs at Toys R Us exclusive rock and roll had a heavy machine gun but mostly weird-looking guns yeah you know the 90s use more gimmicks

Yea the mold is the same I got this guy moc but the bubble was falling off so I took him out to display still a great review and I do like the figure just hate the colors glad to see you getting with timmer for this charity event I think everyone should go and donate to a children's charity! Have a good weekend off and I look forward to the next theme month! I hope we don't see the rock n roll v2 review anytime soon.

Love the Slayer shirt. I never had this figure didn't care much for the sonic fighters or talking battle commanders. I could also make my own sound effects and dialog. Hope to see some Mega Marines reviewed for next month. Got to get tough. Yo Joe!

Forest version of rock and roll is the Dino Hunter with Ambush
Terrible, idea for a figure. I don't need them making noise either, but it's neat that you could utilize the back other than just wearing it. You can hook up both weapons to it, and have him stand on it, and pose with it. That's pretty cool.
I'm not sure if it's a variant or if your RnR v3 is damaged, but both samples of him that I own have the shotgun pegs molded on. The one on yojoe has them as well. www.yojoe.com/action/91/rocknroll3.shtml

I will confirm that this figure is not a variant. I personally removed the pegs on the leg. This was done with an x-acto knife which is why it may look sculpted that way instead of simply broken off
I say rock n roll did appear in the comics in this costume he deputed it in issue 114
I know I could be in a minority on this but I’ll just say it I like version 3 of rock n roll better than version 2 before anyone starts loathing me here me out the version 2 rock n roll while good didn’t look very original he looked more like a bearded duke I think giving him different colors dose give it more originality but that’s my opinion
But for the orange, this would be the coolest looking version of the character in the vintage line.

So he is higher in rank than Duke. However that doesn't matter because even though Duke is a 1st Sergeant, he outranks everyone up to and probably including the Vice President.
I didn't pick this up because of the color. Plus I had the better version which was the coolest.
I ALSO HAD AN ISSUE WITH ALL THE FEMALE JOE CHARACTER BEING EITHER LOWLY RANKS OF EITHER SPECIALIST OR CORPORAL E-4 OR SERGEANT E-5. THEY COULDN'T AT LEAST HAD ONE FEMALE OFFICER. I DID STOP KEEPING TRACK OF THE CHARACTERS IN 1988 SO PERHAPS THEY DID OR PERHAPS SOME GOT PROMOTED
Best thing about this figure is his machine gun mold-looks like a Russian LMG variant-decent realistic looking weapon. The mortar looks horrible. It looks like a WW1 Heavy 15cm cm Trench mortar....

greg samarael is everyone just gonna judge the 90s era of G.I.Joe just for the bad toys that were released that era yeah how about focusing on the good toys that were released that era there were some bad toys released during that time but that doesn’t make it a bad time for G.I.Joe in fact I found a lot of the toys from the 90s to be fantastic

never liked ROCK 'N ROLL v3... All though v2 had a small appearance in one of episode Operation dragon and in season 1 of Dic appearing the opening and small cameos... over all looking forward to v2
i would have been a lil more forgiving on this guy than u...Sure the colors are just terrible. but the overall concept..it isnt too bad..i kinda like how his back pack made for an ok gun placement and rocket mortar! i also like how the rocket mortar could be used seperately too...aside from the colors the other HUGE elephant in the room is that his v2 is such a top tier joe to me. I feel that way with alot of the joes...version 2's were often great step ups that later versions felt like downgrades.
as for the sound effects...i would have liked it but like all things like that would run out of juice and i never had extra batteries as a kid...lol

THE PROBLEM WITH THE FIGURES WERE THAT WHOEVER CREATED THE LINE NEVER REALLY PAID PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE ACTUAL RANK STRUCTURE OF THE MILITARY. AND LATER FIGURES MOSTLY 1987 UNTIL THE DEATH BLOW IN 1994 WERE NOT EVEN MILITARY ACCURATE. ALIENS REALLY WOW.

V2 looks better a normal weapon.
V3 is 10x worse than anything that came from Cobra-la. I say that without exaggerating for effect. This figure is putrid beyond reproach, mostly because of the color palette and packaging. But I've got to say I'm Puh-uh-umped for 90's month. If HCC788 doesn't change his mind about the '87 movie and accompanying figures after reviewing the entirety of the 90's Joe products, I think we may have to commit him to a mental hospital for evaluation because that's some serious psychological scarring.
@HoodedCobraCommander788 there was a Toys R Us exclusive of Rock n' Roll with a totally new sculpt,(new based on Rock n' Roll's original look) new weapons, and a new code name:(Bench Press). The website Yo Joe .com says that Bench Press is an iteration of Rock n' Roll, same file name and virtually the same write up on the card. Does Hasbro still own the rights to the name Rock n' Roll? Or is his permanent code name changed to BENCH PRESS
That might have been a period when Hasbro lost the rights to the Rock n Roll name. There's a Rock n Roll figure coming out next year through the G.I. Joe Collector's Club, so it appears they have the rights again.
Pensive Ruin No , it was just another way to trick kids into buying more of the same, and calling it different. They did that alot. Many times they would use up whatever parts they had left and would just give it a wonky name and slightly change the file card. The 90s versions really killed thier franchise..by 93 they were done. No one wanted goofy neon sci Fi type , gimmicky characters that weren't in the comics. Then they went to the oversized figures that we're even worse!
