IMHO, this has to be considered one of the more realistic designs to come out of the 90's.

It is quite good for a 90s figure.

I might even put it in my 90's top 10. (though at the bottom of that list) The design really reminds me of an updated version of the 1982/83 standard Green 13 uniform.

  • @larryh502

The gun is based on the Russian "Bizon" submachine gun. It was a 9mm gun based off the Kalashnikov AK rifles and used a helical feed cylindrical magazine, which was ommitted from the mold for this accessory. IIRC it could be had chambered in 9x17 Makarov, 9x18 (aka .380 ACP), or 9x19 Luger.

One of the better figures of neon nineteen ninety two. I even dug his double barrel rocket launcher which he used on missions as his main weapon. Wasn't a fan of every Joe and Cobra included with a spring action launcher during the nineties but this was an exception.

Haha, I was distracted and not looking at the screen at the point when you said "he has bare hands". For a moment I thought you meant he had "bear" hands. What a figure that would have been!
This was one of the last figures I ever bought, I really think him and Red Star were some of the best figures released in the nineties. It bothered me that they didn't release more of the Oktober Guard characters that featured in the comic though.

The yellow grenade isn't entirely unrealistic, the us army used solid yellow grenades( I believe prior to ww2) to indicate they were live explosives not training. Then they realized that's not good to have bright yellow things on your uniform in combat as they say " here I am shoot me!" So they went to a thin yellow stripe, then got rid of the yellow altogether.

  • @Michael_Johnson_5446

Looks like a cool figure. The timing of his release is interesting, one year after the fall of the Soviet Union. I guess it took so long to produce the figure that they were just overtaken by world events?

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  6 років тому +3

I assume something like that. A 1992 figure would have been developed in 1991, so world events moved faster than toy production.

I like him, and also the many factions concept like Destro s army.
while it s cool to have fights with Cobra, it gets lame story wise to have only 2 factions.
it would have been best to release more enemies and less joes.
the idea of him using a joe vehicle is rather stupid, like if we d give a hummer to russians troops...
Hasbro missed on a good opportunity to cash in with selling russian vehicles.
that 6 wheels off road and 8 wheeled might have made a nice buy.
imagine if they d released a hind, yeahhh!
those would have sold a lot more than the neon bright colored joes they tried to shove on us for years.
    good show Commander!

Yes, Red Star was released in 1991, and in 1998 Toys R US released a three pack of Colonel Brekhov, Lt. Gorky and Daina (released with the code name Volga). In 2005 a comic book three pack (with a reprint of Marvel comics issue # 6) was released with Colonel Brekhov, Daina, and Schrage. The next comic pack (with Marvel comics issue #7) had Horror Show and Strommavik released alongside Stalker. 2006 saw a comic book three pack(with reprint of Marvel comics issue# 101) released with Dragonsky (v2), Lt. Gorky (v2), and Sgt. Misha Zubenkov. The Oktober Guard characters have also been rleased as convention exclusives( using vintage style molds) and in the newer sculpt style.

I get how the eyes tainted an otherwise great figure for you; but the thing that really bothered me was that big-@$$ rocket launcher being one handed with a midway-rear grip. Big weapons like that need to be held with two hands; or rested on the shoulder, needing a forward grip unless it's long enough to rest on the shoulder anyway. They made too many big accessory weapons that had to held like hand guns. Even with figure stands to keep the figure upright, it often looked ridiculous.

Great review! I don't see why Hasbro couldn't use the brown paint that was used to paint the backpack straps and leg pouch to paint this figure's eyes. Wouldn't it have cost the same to use the red paint? I do like this figure's accessories, but not crazy about the figure itself.

The all-gray one they did for Lt. Gorky looks pretty good. It's a basic uniform, so you can do a lot with it.

I used to shop at Big Bear in Columbus Ohio. It looked nothing like the toy. The cartoon really ruined the October Guard for me. I couldn't stand the wannabe cowboy.

So, when you shopped at the Big Bear, did they take from each according to their ability, and give to each according to their need?
