    Actually, boat ramps aren't the greatest show on earth. Truck stops are. I used to drive long haul, and I always tried to get to the truck stop early so I could get parked, and settle in and watch the show! I was rarely disappointed!

      Yeah, bigger boat bigger problems. After working out of my 21' Carolina skiff for a few days when I decide to take the 17' to the office instead(burns less fuel) it feels like docking and trailering a dinghy hahahah.

    • @lbowsk
      @lbowsk 3 роки тому +1

      It's not that much more difficult until you dick it up. Then a push or a foot on a piling might not save the day as easily as it will with a smaller boat. I started with 17'. Then 23', 29' and 30'. It can be done. Just use your noggin and plan ahead. S L O W is good.

    • @TOO_RAW
      @TOO_RAW 3 роки тому

      @@lbowsk yeah nice n easy is usually a good plan. I run a 32' trawler in the summer and have no problem docking or working her solo but that's because I've been working the water for over a decade and running boats for 6. I'm 26 now so pretty young to have been working the water full time as long as I have.

    You are a couple of decades late for the best. Charlies south Port Oconnor in Texas had a small grandstand set up near the ramp next to the bait camp, and fishermen that had already returned would gather there, finish the beer in their coolers, and offer "constructive criticism and helpful tips" to people still launching or putting in all afternoon, and have a good laugh if someone was less than skillful. It wasn't uncommon for fights to have to be stopped, but generally it was just funny as hell to have all those old salts dropping sarcastic gems. There was eventually a fight too many, and they removed the stands.

    Omg, yes. We live in Cape Coral. The boat ramp that always cracks me up is Burnt Store Ramp. Super tiny.
    The Yacht Club Ramp in S Cape Coral as well as Horton Park Boat Ramp have quite a few laughs in stock. And I'm including ourselves. We are by no means experienced or mistake free. I'll definitely get some "barking wifey" commentary, so I would need to know (if you do decide to check it out) WHEN I should NOT be there. 😂

    Rule one when approaching a dock - have your bow and stern lines attached on the correct side. Rule two - attach fenders if needed as well. Too many people take to the wheel of powerboats thinking that they handle like cars and don't get any instruction beforehand. Lifejackets and kill cords for the helmsman and lifejackets for children are also a good idea.

    Gotta check out the docks at lake Havasu during labor day, 4th of july or any summer time holiday. I cant remember if its dock 6 or not but its non stop entertainment! People waaay to drunk paired with inexperienced individuals equals pure fun. You've got locals that line either side starting early just for the hijinks! It's better than being on the water! Every year you've got at least 1 vehicle that's eaten up bu the water! Best thing is the vibe and colorful, classic passive aggressive insults from the spectators to the novice launchers and backer upers! Grab a chair, an umbrella your favorite cold beverage or smoke and enjoy! Non stop entertainment from dawn to dusk!

    The boat launch in Mukilteo, WA would be good to check out, especially on a stormy fall day before they take the floats out for the winter. They've made some improvements over the years but it's still in a horrible location and tends to get blasted by waves and drifted over with sand. I don't recommend launching here unless you have four wheel drive or it is dead calm. I've seen more than one boat swamped by the waves, and dozens of vehicles stuck on the ramp.

    Small trailers are hard to backup. But what amazes me is that hardly none of the boats were using bumpers when docking. Can't imagine some of the damage the scratches did to the boats with more than 2 people on board to help dock the boat. I use to go out with a 28 foot star craft by myself and I never had problems like these people were having loading the trailer or unloading it.

    Something I've seen on smaller boat trailers around here are bicycle / ATV flags at the back corners of the trailer. That way you CAN see where it is and what direction it's going. Then you either take them off or tie the tips down at the front of the trailer when you're ready to hit the road.
