They don't operate their boats very well either. It looks like people in Florida don't know what a fender is. They just bang and scrape their nice boats at every opportunity. Oh well
I'm amazed by how many people let ocean water touch their towing vehicle. There has to an enormous number of rear brake failures among people using boat ramps. Even fresh water will seize drum brakes if you don't drive around a bit and boil it off. I wonder if thats why they sometimes go in the water. The rear brakes fail because they parked them wet when they put the boat in.
As I said in another post, I have a sailboat, so different scenario. I have a 6ft extender for launching and retrieving and still sometimes have my front tires wet. I need about 4ft to launch. I’ll only do fresh water. Salt water, I find a lift and have them launch it. Not going to put my trailer, let alone my vehicle in salt water.
@@debbiewyler4048 I never had a deep draft boat. I see them on trailers and wondered how far you have to back in to float them. I always wondered if you could add a winch to the back of the truck and ease the trailer back with it. I still would never put my truck in the ocean. It has to ruin things prematurely.
@@michaellowe3665 There are different techniques. The most common is what I have which is just the extension. The pole is essentially like a receiver hitch, but 8ft long and it slides in under the normal hitch on the trailer about 2ft. It depends on the ramp. Sometimes I only have to back in as far as anyone else with that. Sometimes, like I said, i feel like I am driving across the lake. I launch with the motor off. It is only 4hp and doesn't do much in reverse. I have long dock lines and pull it off. Sometimes, I have to do a hard stop to get it to slide off. What you describe has been used by some. Never by me. I am often running off the paved portion and into mud and rocks. My boat plus trailer is about 3500lbs. It would be challenging to push it by hand. If it is paved and gravity helps, people will use a tow strap and put the trailer hitch wheel down and then walk it back with the tow vehicle controlling. Recovering also with the tow strap. Not something I have tried or intend to. Places with a lot of deep draft boats just have longer and steeper ramps. The lifts are nice when I have been up around Seattle. They just lift it off the trailer and set it in the water and my SUV and trailer stays completely dry.

Maybe it is a personality thing? I like to make sure everyone on board knows what is about to happen, who will be doing what, and if there are any questions, why that needs to happen. Takes a lot of anxiety out of the entire situation. Does not guarantee a smooth experience, but the one crewmate I can't control is Nature. Always on board. Not always onboard with my plans.
My wife and I had a tournament ski boat for 22 years. She knew her duties, I knew mine and we specifically asked any guests (and there were always guests) to sit still and do nothing. If the boat started easily, we could launch in less than three minutes. It took about the same amount of time once the trailer was wet to retrieve it. My wife was outstanding at piloting the boat on and off the trailer. Made the other boaters look even sillier.
Never buy more boat than your truck can handle And never buy a boat that your emotions and patience can’t handle. If you’re going to get heated over a small struggle getting a small boat onto a ramp, maybe you shouldn’t take the family boating.
We have a 32 ft tritoon and its pretty hard to get these on a trailer. We have mastered it by now but occasionally we have to rock it to center it but it really doesn't take much because my 13 year old can do it.
Size of the boat isn't the problem here. It is lack of experience. Larger trailers are easier to handle. Also, when I am docking a boat I tell my passengers to stay in the boat and just stay out of the way while I dock for safety. The captain is responsible for their passengers.
When was the last time you launched a boat? Have you forgotten how slippery it is? Should he risk hip surgery when his wife can't do something so simple as push the boat toward him? Funny to see the insolence projected back upon the women who castrate men when we fail to do simple things like wash dishes or laundry... If I were him I would make them find their own way home...
I owned a pontoon and it was pretty common to push the stern to line up with the bunks. It is pretty easy on a pontoon. A regular boat, now that is almost impossible!
Jeans on a jetski is just stupid, idc who does it and thinks it's a good idea. Denim gets REAL heavy when wet and will drag you down. On second thought, keep wearing it. Thin the human herd out a little bit.

The simple way to launch a boat trailer: Back down until the skeg of the motor is (1) submerged or (2) half submerged. (1) Inboard or (2) outboard. Lower trim but not fully ( enough so that the prop is fully under water) Start engine to ensure it works. If so continue if not, get off the ramp and fix it. Engines running, begins to loosen bow eye or winch hook and then take it off before you reverse boat alongside the dock. Then do the ropes/lines (bow line first. If you begin to drift away from the dock, you can use the engines propulsion to correct yourself ) keeping the engine running allowing it to get up to temp and letting everything run through and lube it up. See. Simple. How to know how far fo back up? Also simple. The stern shouldn’t be floating on the water. It should still be “connected” to the trailer. Generally a few inches before the tyres are touching the water. Like 3 or 4.
You guys really do wait till you hit the dock to start pulling out lines! And apparently tenders are for pu**ies in FL. Maybe these inlets dont get rough enough? 🤷♂️ sometimes I face 2 or 3ft waves docking so fenders are a must.

Any commonsense captain knows the crucial moment of bringing her in requires a conversation with a deck hand(s) 5 minutes before arrival. Who gets off first. Who grabs and throws the line. It isn't rocket science. My own experience is that many captains don't do this because of ego (and sometimes the combination of alcohol) prevents them from wanting to involve others. In reality others on-board want to get involved and enjoy the experience- except for most wives who should be at home so you can bring the girlfriend instead.
