I was literally going to figure out how to tweet or email you this video idea last night, but I eventually decided against it...think I've been spending too much time on UA-cam.
@chcomes I mentioned below, in my research, I believe (or the forum nerds - my heroes! Believe) that it's just a 16 bit container for the information, and not true 16 bit. It needs this extra bit depth to store the dynamic range boost information, but it isn't a "proper" 16 bit file in actuality. (This is all going off the people who thoroughly test these things, I wish Lumix would explain it properly, as if it is a proper 14 bit file, even, that's something to shout about)
@@MicroFourNerds Ah that's half answered my comment just made lol! Adobe Bridge and RawDigger though both report the actual bit depth at 16bit. They do the same for my G9 files and the GX9 files. It actually reads the files as 16 bits per sample. So I'm not 100% sure if the 'container' thing is accurate. Any chance you could do side by side comparisons of the raw files, the raw files in each hi-res mode too?
I'll try to ask at next Lumix Live, but since you're in contact with them please also ask them to add S9's airplane detection to G9II since they were able to do it from G9ii to S5II. Maybe also add mammals separate from birds?
I’m a semi-retired fashion/beauty photographer and have been using full frame and medium format for years. Today, I still have a medium format system, but I mostly use M cameras and lenses for personal fun. Nevertheless, every now and then you want something more versatile and with AF. In 1974, my father bought me an OM-1. I guess he was fed up with lending his precious M4 to a 12-year old. Two years ago, I bought a new OM-1 with the 12-40 Pro lens for my daughter’s 21st birthday. She loves that camera and the images are gorgeous. The result for me was that I’ve fallen in love again with M43. I just bought the OM-1 MkI. Simply because it’s the last OM-1 with the name Olympus on the front. Now I have the first OM-1 (still works great) and the last one, side-by-side on my desk. I admit, it’s a bit of a strange reason, but every time I pick up my new OM-1, I experience the joy of a life-time of photography.
A lovely story Jacob, how lucky is your daughter to receive such a beautiful gift on her 21st! I am also blessed to have the 1st (original 1974 OM-1 in its leather case) as well as the last Olympus OM-1. I was 21when the original OM-1 was released... The Hasselblad system still gets some landscape and studio use these days, but the current OM-1 and a 40 - 150 f2.8 is my best mate on a daily basis.
@mipmipmipmipmip Perhaps you could expand on what you think a "generation ahead" would look like? Personally, I don't see any dramatic improvements possible to flagship cameras other then at such time as there is a breakthrough in sensor technology. Otherwise, we'll be seeing incremental refinements.
To me OM System does what made M43 so fun and unique, they lean into the technology and computational aspect! The system has been the leader in such things for a long while and Panasonic has kind of stopped doing that, with their M43 cameras just being their ff cameras, but with a different sensor. I hope we get more of that with new OM models!
To me Panasonic does what made M43 great for me. I started with the GH5 because it had the best video specs at that price point and great stabe. And now i have the G9II and it has improved in all the things i needed, more mega pixels, better auto focus and better low light performance. So i guess we can love M43 in each our own way :)
Wow, what a detailed and practical comparison. Not seen any other comparison and analysis that is so balanced. You really know these cameras. OM Ambassador and LUMIX Ambassador badges in the post!
One of my favorite videos…and I don’t own either camera! Nicely done! Plus I add my vote for more ‘small’ m43 cameras (I see other comments in that regard)!
Thanks for a wonderful clip, and one where you went out of your way to be objective. As an OM-1/1 owner, I did gel with the camera quickly, and I truly enjoy using it. I feel as if it is working with me, rather than doing stuff for me. I tend to agree that the G9 II is perhaps a slightly better all-rounder, but having had Panasonic cameras in the past, I suspect we might not play well together. Maybe I'll give one a try at some stage. Predominantly into landscape, I occasionally try for BIF and a year ago, I snapped some cormorant photos and each was sharp which delighted me. My financial controller will insist that the OM-1/II is a needless extravagance, and she may well be right: the high-res for landscapes of my OM-1 (it doesn't offer the 14-bit RAW files) are still very pleasing, and ON1 does a great job in post-processing. Not much of a video person, I think I'll wait on the OM-1/III, and see how that looks, but for now, it's so hard for me to be dissatisfied with what I have.
I really get so much from your videos. When you do express your opinion, you explain why you've come to it, which reminds me of my agency to come along with you. Or not. Thankyouthankyou! I'm mostly shooting birds and have a barn full of Zuiko lenses, so yes -- I'm delighted with my OM-1. When I shoot non-birdy things, the OM-1 does just fine. And a few months ago I bought an Olympus PEN-F, for those times when I really need a nice piece of jewelry on the street. (I don't mean to remind you of a painful bit in your past (selling a PEN!) I'm reiterating your point that photography can be fun even without the latest greatest most up to date wizardry. Thank you sincerely!
Emily, this is the best gear review video I think you've ever done. I say that because you have done a fantastic job of accurately and objectively describing the differences between these two amazing cameras in meaningful detail. When products and technology gets to this level the question changes from "best" to "best fit" and you not only made that clear, but the bit at the end about bonding with a given camera is spot on. I think the goal is to find camera that is such a good fit for you that it disappears in your hands such that you don't think about it but only the image capture. I am NOT a video shooter, so the OM-1 is the best fit for me. First, it fits me like I just described, I use many of the computational features, the smaller size vs. the G9II is significant to me, and I think the weather proofing is better as OMS is the only camera company to publish a industry standard rating. But, I wouldn't feel abused of "forced" to use the G9II. 🙂 Again - fantastic work! You are becoming not just one of the few UA-cam photography channels I find worth watching but you head my short list of "must watch" creators.
Thanks so much for that I really appreciate it 🙏 I was concerned it as it was a bit longer than my usual videos but I tried really hard to get it right
Hate to but in here, but I agree with you on the way the OM-1 fits in your hand. It is a far more comfortable grip, and it feels molded to my hand in use. I just wish the button layout were more intuitive. My perfect camera would have the OM-1 grip and pre-capture control, the G9II sensor, HHHR mode, and button layout, and a sizing closer the the old GX8 that I used to own. That would be my ideal setup.
I have been checking your videos for a bit longer than a week when I started to get into micro four thirds (not leaving Full Frame, just want something more portable and still at a higher level), and I really want to thank you for being so authentic and engaging. You really know how to make sense of the system for your audience. 🙏 Thank you
Sport! You said sport! I definitely heard it, very near the end. You didn’t mention it in the MkII review but you did in this. That’s what I do and I’ve used Olympus/OM since 2018. OM seemed to abandon sport photographers in its marketing but I carried on. Thank you for the encouragement (possibly unintentional).
Wow, great job on the review. The only comparison anyone needs IMO. I already have the OM-1 so probably not upgrading yet, and the new firmware actually seemed to improve detection, and tracking quite a bit.
Great video, as usual! I rented the G9 II hoping to have that be my "tele" setup alongside my S5 II which I use for wide-to-normal work. Your observations about the buffer, to me, speak to how the OM-1 is just a better architected, higher spec'd and ultimately more "professional" camera. I don't see the G9 II (or S5 II) to be "flagship" cameras - and I think that's reflected in their (very fair) price points. They're great cameras, but once I got the OM-1 Mark II I thought "this is it" all the basics work very well, it wakes up faster, moving between modes is faster, rating/selecting is faster, etc. It just "feels" like more of a professional tool to me. Add the computational modes and it's a no brainer for me. Crossing my fingers for an L-Mount version!
@@J.R.Y. Nope. Exclusively Olympus/OM System. I have some Lumix lenses I use on my E-P7 but generally I prefer the less-clinical look of most of the Oly glass
Your best comparison footage of the two brands Emily, well done! In fact, I think it is by far the best comparison video for the two cameras I should say... Only nitpicky thing I have if I heard that right, your experience with OM1.1 in SA for wildlife/birds would have been better if you only use subject detection and not messing with the tracking. It is known for a long while that Olympus CAF + Tracking is pretty useless until OM1.2. I know OMDS is not as focus in the video but I do hope they up their game a bit more with their next flagship camera. I don't shoot lots of video but it is one aspect I am envious of Lumix shooter for certain :-). I wish you would compare OM1.2 HHHR 12bits vs 14bits as well. If I am right you were comparing normal with 14bits HHHR (18-20mp vs 50mP).
Very balanced review! One advantage for OM Systems is that my local camera store carries it. Panasonic doesn't seem to play well with local "brick and mortar" camera stores. I shoot Panasonic and Nikon. It's great having local access to all things Nikon, but I have to do everything online for Panasonic. I'm considering leaving Panasonic because of it. Nikon has also become quite good with video, lately.
I appreciate the unbiased way of showing the differences beyond the specs. This has been leading me to some new insights: 1) Object Detection AF has become much better in the OM-1 II at least when the objects are birds. 2) The G9 II can't fully compete at AF, something that other reviews have stated even more explicitly. 3) Though the specs are quite spectacular the G9 II fails at burst shooting as it would probably make me miss shots while waiting for the buffer write to complete. 4) I don't really get a result for image stabilization as what's shown is just a short comparison in video recording, so I assume the OM-1 to still be better at stills.5) The G9 II seems to be the clear winner for video. But that's not for me, reassigning the video button to something useful is always the first when a new camera gets into my hands 😉 6) Differences in image quality are below any practical relevance, even the reduced rolling shutter on the OM-1 II is pretty insignificant in my view. 7) But ergonomics seem to have improved a lot on the G9 II compared to its predecessor. And of course shame on OM System for omitting the button tactuality on the OM-1 as my E-M1X has it and I feel it's a real pro feature. In fact the dials on the G9 II look a lot like those on the E-M1 m1/m2/m3 while those on the OM-1 are similar to those on the E-M1X which I'd prefer. But for LUMIX it's a big change for the better, maybe the G9 III will become the first I'd consider buying too.
Thank you for the very honest comparison between two stellar cameras Emily. I want to add a quick note. Both cameras only have 12 bit ADCs on their sensor (the G9ii has two 12 bit ADCs for DR boost). So the "14 bit" high resolution mode is just a wrapper to hold the extra DR captured by the OM1ii in that mode, similar to the 16 bit wrapper the G9ii uses for all modes, to hold on to the extra DR captured by the DR boost. In effect, this is what makes the G9ii hold on to colour in the deep shadows much better. So I assume the G9ii's 100MP handheld high resolution mode to still outperform the OM1ii's 50MP HHHR.
A very thoughtful breakdown of the strengths and weaknesses of both cameras. I'm a retired press photographer dabbling in wildlife photography using, mostly, the original G9 (the OG9:) and 100-400mm and shooting JPEGS, a bad habit from my press days. I recently had a chance to photograph an eagles raising a pair of chicks. We had to keep a very respectful distance and I found the 20-meg sensor and 800mm 35mm=reach of the 100-400mm not long enough to get close in on the chicks. Long story short I activated the 2x digital converter, kept the ISO at 200, and was pleasantly surprised by the effective 1,600mm results. Much better than cropping in my 800mm images. I'd welcome a video from you on this feature. Maybe contrasting it to cropping in with RAW images. When working I almost never had time to work with RAW images so I'd value your perspective.
Anchio scatto quasi sempre in jpg senza problemi esistenziali. 🤔
@@palmerino1965 I have found the 2x digital converter in the G9 menu useful if used at low ISO (200 is what I use) in good light. I have it set in one of my custom modes and for keeping a respectful distance from nesting birds it has been a big help, and very convenient, since a 20-meg sensor generally doesn't lend itself to a lot of cropping.
I don't understand how 2x digital converter would be better then cropping the raw image. How about 2x teleconverter and 2x digital converter. 3,200mm equivalent on a 400mm lens
@@Chris-Brown- You are probably right. Unfortunately, 40+ years of press photography left me with some bad habits--like shooting JPEGS. I came to the Lumix G9 through the Lumix FZ1000 when I had to shoot stills and video for my paper at the same time. The FZ 1000 (I had the Leica version) offered an iZoom 2x doubler in the menu that seemed to use the processor to "enhance" the images. To this day I'm amazed how well that feature works compared to standard 2x digital converters. I'd love to see Lumix add the iZoom option to the G9 Mk2's menu. To your point, I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone compare RAW crops to JPEG crops. I'd watch a menu on that subject.
You've almost reached the Hollywood level with this video. Very explicit and helpful. We've to be all grateful to you for this titanic work of art. Keep up the good work, you're such an inspiration!
I bought an e-m1.3 during lock down and got hooked on m43 ever since! Now im keen to upgrade, mainly for wildlife and this video is what I've been waiting for! Excellent review, super thorough and as unbiased as you can get (we know you really really love Lumix;) just waiting for alignment of budget, OM promotions and my OH looking away and I'll click buy
@@Emerald_City_ it's mostly just want. But I'd like better tracking as I find the tracking a bit hit or miss....but mostly just lust for new and shiny. I've got several other (newer cameras) but the controls and ergos of the em1 are my favourite.
Thank you. This is the best-unbiased comparison I have seen to date. Time to buy the S a little oly foster brother for the fast action stuff since the S is no sport or wildlife camera
Nicely done and thorough. Thank you. I rarely do video, so "simple" video is all I need. I love the OM System computational modes for all kinds of shooting. I recently upgraded from the E-M1 mkiii to the OM-1 mkii. Simply impressive! The G9 mkii was tempting, but I chose the OM-1 mkii. I also have an OM-5, which I love. As you say, both the G9II and the OM-1 II are stellar. Can't go wrong with either.
A great video with superb explanation that is clear and precise covering the important points and differences of each camera. Many thanks for making this video Emily along with all your others.
Fantastic deep dive and balanced analysis! One of the best videos of this type I've ever seen. I, and I'm sure many others, greatly appreciate your hard work! I just got the G9II and I have so much to learn. While I do intend to shoot birds and would appreciate a less restrictive burst mode, I appreciate the stabilization and video features of the G9II so I have no regrets at all. Also, the video didn't feel long at all because of my interest in everything you covered.
Hi Emily, another great video, I bought the G9II and use mostly Olympus lenses as I prefer the look more but I have lenses from both, I use it most for video but I'm taking photos too so I'm in love with my G9II 😊 Cheers!
Thanks for this! I'm in no shape to go flagship but I love your reviews and wish more than anything I had seen them when I was first shopping. I should have gone M43 from the beginning.
I love the Faroe Islands, have been there many times, last time 15 years ago. I have some MFT stuff and use it for weddings, event, portraiture and landscape, along with Nikon FX. My best MFT cameras for the moment are Oly E-M1.2 and Lumix GX8. I also use both for video occasionally. For events, limitless recording is essential, and I'd prefer the G9ii for that and other video features. On the other hand, Olympus seems to me the more premium, photographer's camera. Anyway, since I am happy with my E-M1.2, and only miss a pro video camera, I will go for the G9ii first. For the Faroes, I'd also add a long tele for the seabirds. I "only" have the Oly 40-150 pro with MC14, and maybe the new PL 100-400 will be the most balanced wildlife lens for the G9ii? The alternative would be a PL 200/2.8 with TC14. Pricewise they are similar...
Maybe the best camera comparison review ever!👍 Once again Emily's honesty and good cheer bubbles through to endear! Even those of us who do not want the G9ii/OM1ii will be tempted (a little😉). But, we do have a better appreciation for the features in the cameras we have or want. There is one serious contender for go anywhere compact alternative that has many of the G9ii/OM1ii essential features (PDAF, hi burst speed, stabilization, weatherproof, 4k video) with a 24-600mm f2.4-4 lens thrown in. Although the Sony RX10iv is 7 years older than the G9ii/OM1ii, it still packs a punch for the hybrid shooter. Maybe Emily will be tempted by the dare to take the RX10iv vs G9ii/OM1ii comparison challenge!😊👍
Thanks for a great review. I lean toward the OM-1 because I do very little video and while birds are far from the only thing I shoot, I think they are the only thing I shoot where upgrading my camera is going to make a noticeable difference. Also I'm leaning towards getting a used copy of the original OM-1 because it looks like I can get one for about $1000 less than the mark Ii. Then I could put that money towards a better lens.
Wow what a video. Thank you Emily. This seems silly. I just do photography with maybe a few video clips. One might think the OM1 Mii is the body for me. I have the EMD1 Mii and G9. I prefer the G9. Most of my M43 cameras are LUMIX. Absolutely love the GX8/85/9. So it is a system preference. The major feature I love about the lumix, high isn’t present in the GX8/85 is L monochrome D. This is my favorite B&W jpeg. Sorry Acros + red filter. Yes, I can achieve with mucking around in Lightroom. I don’t edit my images. Getting the look I like SOOC is very valuable to me. Yes, both bodies are super. They are super in some different ways. You select the super powers you will use the most. With all these super powers to select from, it seems strange to me I’m voting for the G9ii because of this jpeg feature. As my mother use to say, that’s hat makes horse races. What does that even mean? It is so strange to see you dressed in your winter kit in July. Go Hawks even though my long time team is the Giants. A team only a mother or hometown kid can love. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Thanks for the comparisons of these 2 micro four thirds cameras. For lightness combined with a similar body layout as the Panasonic Lumix S5 we have just bought the G9 II. Have about 6 M43 lenses sitting rarely or never used since we stopped using the Panasonic G80 and GX80 cameras.
I really enjoy your videos. You're very clear and entertaining. In the early 80s I worked in a camera store and sold Olympus OM-2n based on the feature that it would read light off the film plane and add it up until you had the correct exposure, up to two minutes, and then close the shutter automatically. It was the precursor to the current live view computational feature.
Love, love, love this video. Absolutely nailed it. You answered all the questions in my head. I was on the fence about which to aim for, but will plump for the OM1ii as best filling my needs. I'm currently using the EM5iii as my walk around camera. My Canon R5 and full frame gear is spending more and more time on the shelf.
Thanks for that Emily, really useful to see. I’m a G9ii user, it’s a huge improvement over the G9, BUT since the release of the OM-1 ii I’ve wondered if I would benefit more from its better evf, instant start up, (3 second lag really frustrates me on G9ii). I also do minimal post processing, so in body focus stacking would be useful too. One observation I’d make on your puffin shots at 28 mins, with the G9ii the birds face was obscured mostly with its wing, on your OM-1 its head was clearly visible, so I think it was easier to recognise as a bird.
That's a great point thank you ☺️ Yes, the lag to turn on the g9ii (and all higher end lumix cameras) does annoy me too. At least twice a week I'm half way to changing the battery before it turns on because I think it's dead haha
@@MicroFourNerds I have to check all my batteries charge through my original S5 before each shoot because my S5iix and G9ii can be too slow to turn on. Wish Lumix would fix that!
For some of us, using i.e. having to deliver the bulk of photos at a pinch, perhaps a question unanswered is how the sooc jpegs compare between these two contestants? Olympus used to beat the Lumix ('color science'), but this is a new era now...
Thank you very much for this awesome comparison ! Being 66 y old, I'm looking for a ligher combo for wildlife photography aside ma Canon FF and APS-C cameras. You offered me the solution !!! Again, congratulation for your professional work !
Well done! Very interesting comparison. While I can see that using V30 rated cards would help demonstrate the differences in how the burst mode works, I hope you are using V90 cards in your normal shooting. Emptying the buffer at 260MB/s vs ~130MB/s should lessen the impact.
I still keeping M1x though. The flagship of its own category. The older 20mpix sensor has lower native ISO, but I was able to get incredibly good color reproduction with white balance calibration.
Nice, informative video Emily 😊 Former Nikon and current Fuji (xt 5) user, I bought the G9ii last year and paired it with the Leica / Panasonic 200 F2.8 to try some sports photography : Highland League Football. I must say I'm very happy with the results, so far 😊
Excellent review. I own all Olly but find nobody minds my GX85 as it is so small it looks more like a toy. Whenever I take out my Olympus and 12-100 or other pro lens, everyone runs for the hills. Never battled with any Oly to take whatever I want because I spot focus and learned the value of anticipation with DSLR’s. So never ever use bursts. Never take birds in flight cause what they do in the water or when feeding is far more interesting and any camera is up to it. The OM1 2 is just great cause I admire the tech, but I have taken nothing more spectacular with it than the Em 1m2 and 3. I can see the nich values but for the rest of us, anything works just fine, even GX85 videos. Old salesman saying, just sell the dream not the item. That is greatly why we love your videos.
Wow, Eli! You know as nobody else to combine a cherry sweet informal approach with the technical knowledge ánd subtle detail _plus_ the insight/experience of a passionate pro, the quality often being skipped or dry presented by some men, let's not name examples now. I remember the first two videos of yours I've watched, I found the presentation a little contrived, but I've been long since sold. This approach is your personal niche and obviously thousands recognize and like it. Even on a small screen I perceive the differences in the noise and color that you present. Would be nice to see a high-res tripod comparison, shots set next to each other, to see if we're splitting hairs or is it a substantial difference. Yes, the Yt algorithm will diminish it, but still. This is the comparison I've been waiting for a long time, since your famed safari enterprise. Just like you, I am in all genres. Tried birding just to test my 100-400 lens, but it got me sucked in and helped me learn and love the birds. The technical specs are knowledgeably presented the way you do it, but the best of all is what you mention in the end - it's some inexplicable personal interaction in the end that matters the most. When I take the oldie E-M1 original with me, I know I will fiddle with the (too few too small) buttons and a slow AF, bit it will be accurate and predictable and the _sooc_ colors still better (or nicer) than what my much newer G9/G90 produce. Also the IBIS is still awesome regardless of the absence of a dual stabe. So for the photography, the feel, the shape and grip, I would lean against the OM, especially that 14-bit high-res is impressive, but I do video as well and that makes the dilemma really really tough. If Panasonic comes with the 14-bit high res in an update, the dilemma is solved.
I did a lot of research before buying the G9 II. I've watched a ton of videos. Yours is the most complete and detailed I've seen by far. I wish I had seen it before buying my camera. I still believe I made the right choice though. I may buy an OM camera some day, if only for the better way of dealing with the buffer situation, the much smaller file size and the computational ND filters. I love Live view composite as well. Great for fireworks or any kind of longish exposure. As you mentioned in your video, so for I've not run into trouble with maxing out the buffer but it is very annoying having to wait for the files to write and not being able to shot for a bit. Thank you. :)
Thanks for this comparison! I struggled over the last several months on which way to go with upgrading my M43 primary camera. I ended up on the G9ii, partially because it's essentially the same body as my S5iiX. That makes it incredibly easy to learn and use. The OM1ii is a great camera, though. I think anyone who does birding (and wildlife in general) would be better off with the OM. It seems like a birder's dream camera.
Excellent Comparison. Objectively describing the possible pros and cons of owning either model. Sadly, i want features from both. I love sports and wildlife photography. Particularly motor sports. The buffer clearing issue on the G9ii would annoy the heck out of me and also rolling shutter when panning. I have original G9 with pl 100-400mm and love that combo except for dodgy af. I also use Olympus em5iii and adore it for every day stuff. So maybe no need to change yet. But the OM1 is very compelling. I also have a lot of oly glass too, so have feet in both camps. If Panasonic could sort the burst write issue my decision would be made. I'm a little hesitent to commit more of my dwindling finances to OM Systems until i see proper progression in the OM5 series.
Hi, thank you for a less biased opinion of these cameras. For many years, Olympus and now OM System offer an awsome feature called Pro Capture. Out of curiousity, does Panasonic have a similar feature?
Your last point was the one that swung it for me. I got hold of the G9 mk2 and didn't feel comfortable holding it. That's just me and my hands, nothing to do with what the camera can do. My OM1 mk2 is on order. Thank you for a great video.
I recently bought v90 cards for my lumix G9ii, and it makes a HUGE difference to the burst mode experience! I recommend giving this a try (although it is not anything close to free...).
Hi, thanks a lot for this video ! Pana G9 (mkI) and OM-1 (mkI also) user here, mainly bird photographer. The only times I've hit the buffer with my OM-1 are when using procapture at 120 fps for bird takeoffs. Nota Bene: my wildlife lens is the Panasonic 100-400, so I'm stuck with 25fps bursts with the autofocus, which is fine by me. The 90 or so image buffer is enough for me, even when photographing very speedy birds like swallows in flight, because I rarely burst for more than 2 seconds at a time. The video capabilities of the OM-1 are pretty gimmicky compared to my G9. Yes there's a log profile I don't have with the G9, but it's forced when you want to record 10 bit, and I don't always need it. Also, the slow motion of the OM-1 looks like a pixel soup, and that's a real shame. However, when it comes to macro, boy the OM-1 shines. I get way faster bracketing burst rates compared to the G9, that grants me a much higher success rate on live insects ! About subject detection, my OM-1's bird detect happily detects insects and even frogs ! So just because it says birds, don't hesitate to try it out on other subjects :)
😂I got a pillow detected when I had cats/dogs subject detection on. It took a while to understand what I did wrong. But finally I saw the pillow looked like a cat 😂😂😂
The dual stabilization is a big enough issue leading me to plan a G9 II early next year. I had Olympus for years, but the G9 and stabilized lenses were an eye opener. Looking at the OM 100-400, a lens I will use and can budget not having sync IS is enough for me to say G9 II and PL 100-400. Great video by the way!
Thank you for your very thorough and unbiased review. Well done. My wife and I both own the OM-1 & G9II cameras and use them for travel/landscape and bird photography. She loves the G9II for its superior video and the OM-1 with her Oly 12-100 for stills. I still have my G9 and probably too many PL lenses and purchased the G9II because the price offered was just too tempting. I use the OM-1 for bird photography with the Oly 300mm f4 lens with and without teleconverters. To me the OM-1 is hands down better for birds but I’m staying with Panasonic for general photography as I love the lenses, colors and the menu system. We were just in Newfoundland photographing puffins & gannets and frankly and we came away pleased with all of our gear. The Panasonic 100-400 v 1 performed very good on the G9II but not as good as the OM-1, of course the 300mm prime had something to do with that. You have convinced me that the OM-1. MKII is worth investigating as it has some advantages over the OM-1, so thank you for describing in depth those features. Envy your Faroe Islands trip, we have very fond memories of our visit two years ago, alas no puffins in September when we were there.
Just replaced my Lumix G7 with the G9II. Amazing camera. Burst mode (whale/birds etc) no issue of me. Maybe that is because I used to use a 4-7 frame motorwind on my Contax 139, limited to 36 frames at a time. What all these digital cameras can do nowadays is amazing in comparision. Would be interested in your thoughts on the autofocus (still images) differences between the two as well...
Great comparison, very fair. I've been Olympus user since 90's but I am considering seriously to switch to Lumix g9II since I am not a birds photografer, just portrait, fashion and social
While I haven’t checked hi res mode, my G9ii raw files are 16 bit. Coupled with the extra megapixels and a fairly big embedded jpeg would explain the difference in raw file sizes.
Excellent video. I was impressed by the 14bit High Resolution image of the lens and wonder how the G9ii version would have looked. Also do you, or anyone know what bit depth is the G9ii using?
I’ve got an Olympus OMD EM1 mk ii - is that the same camera as the newer OM Systems OM1 mk ii version? Just moved from Sony APSC ! Partly as I want ibis for shooting with vintage glass. Great videos btw!
Hi Emily, Great video. Thank you very much 🙏 I will chose the OM1 MarkII. Im not interested in making videos. I was particularly impressed by your results with the 14 bit HighRes photos. That and the improved AF are worth the update from the E-M1 III for me, even if I would save around €700 with an OM1 Mark I. At the moment I'm using the E-M1 III. I also own the 300mm f/4. I think an update to the OM1 II makes sense. Greetings from Germany Alex
great comparison! Love your videos. If I can make one suggestion is to get a getter mic. It's like the crispness and clarity in your voice is missing and sometimes it's hard to understand what you just said. There seems to be almost an echo /muffled in the audio. Perhaps running the audio thru a program like Audacity would help.
Good job! You really knows what I want to know about these cameras. One thing you should know is that the max writing speed of a memory card have nothing to do with cameras. it only works when the memory card is insert a computer with certain card reader. And cameras like these two, you should get a V60 or V90 card with UHS II at least. A UHS II card like 160m/s is faster than a UHS I 200m/s card on camera.
I purchased both! The om-1mii was the winner for me. Ergo was better plus the build quality of the oly is amazing. Just turning on the oly was pretty much instant while the g9ii was quite slow. then the write speed was noticeable slower on the panny. not into video so whatever the oly produces is fine with me.
Thank you for your in depth comparison. Been a Olympus m3/44 user but wanting good video capabilities and not so much burst capabilities (hate sorting through shots and prefer the Deer Hunter approach to photography), I think the G9ii is on my horizon. It should pair nicely with my pro Oly glass.🙏😁
I have both cameras, and I would agree with everything you bring up EXCEPT the Hand Held High Res mode. The noise reduction on the HHHR mode is NOT due to the 14 vs. 12 bit images. It is due to the multiple file merging that occurs in the HHHR process. I have found the G9ii HHHR files to be cleaner with more detail than the OM-1 files due to the significantly higher resolution.
Also, far better handling of motion in the image, which is the major drawback to HHHR mode. Wind blown leaves in HHHR landscapes look fine on the G9ii, but are blurs on the OM-1.
@@MicroFourNerds Emily, an interesting update and very good balance. Thank you. I was almost throwing my arms in the air to say ' at last a rounded and objective insight'...but then, oh dear - the dynamic range question. The comparison of OM1 mk1 vs Mk2 is not helpful when your objective is to help us to decide between OM1 mk2 and Pany G9II. I am sure it's not going to be a straight forward answer, in the same way the buffer discussion was not cut and dry, but you handled it so very well. Follow-up please.
@@MicroFourNerds I've done the test many times. I do a lot of righ-res landscapes I even included my Nikon Z7II in the comparison. The G9II out resolves the Nikon by a small amount, and is far better than the OM-1. The only time the Nikon is preferred is when there is a lot of movement in the image. I wish the processor on the G9II was faster, because it takes twice as long to develop each image compared to the OM-1. When you merge 6 images together for a high res shot, the added time is difficult to adjust for.
I have the G9-II and since I do a lot of video, this is the better camera for me. As far as I know, the G9-II is always saving an 16bit image format in stills. Even if there are no 16bit and the additional bits are stored and most likely compressed to nothing. This is used in the HighRes-Modes so the G9-II should have this larger bit depth advantage just like the OM1_II. I use HHHR typically in cases like city-scapes and buildings and usually people or cars are moving in those images. My experience is, that the G9-II handles this very good and moving objects are not sliced into pieces. I think the OM1 isn't doing this that in the same quality but until now all comparison videos I saw only tested completely static test images. I would like to see such comparisons out in the wild. Especially the HHHR is made for images outside where you don't use a tripod and can't wait until actually nothing moves.
@@ericfernando4296 They don't tell us exactly what this is all about but it is possible to put a 12bit readout into a 16bit format and if you do a second readout with a different amplifier, you can do some calculations, get more bits and additional information. If I remember this correctly, Sean Robinson from Lumix USA said something like they are somehow doing calculations with the readouts, don't tell what exactly and the result has more DR and preserves the highlights better so the result has more than 12 bit, is stored in a 16bit container but doesn't have the 16bit.
No it does not have it. People are getting confused with bit rates of still images from these cameras based on discussions. Even the best Sony or other full frame cameras and sensors in the uncompressed RAW images are able to record only 14 bit color information, which drops to 12 bits during higher speed shooting. In video using RAW video recording they can achieve close to 16 bit after grading. These cameras destroy both G9II and OM-1 in DR and noise performance with 4x larger sensors. The Panasonic RAW files of images are not real 16 bit, just recorded in an inefficient bloated format and hardly different from OM1 files if you start to push shadows and highlight. However, in burst shooting modes the OM-1 files are clearly superior both in DR and noise performance compared to G9II, and it is quite impressive that OM-1 is not dropping the 12 bit rate under these conditions (this is where you clearly see the much better Sony sensor in OM-1 to shine). Also very likely that during the high resolution mode (like during the high speed shooting) G9II is not using the dynamic range boost, which is basically a computational feature (nothing to do with the sensor's performance), thus the 14 bit HR files of OM1II should be superior in noise and DR.
I appreciate this is a long one! Feel free to skip around using the chapters and timestamps in the description 😊 as always, i welcome your thoughts!
I was literally going to figure out how to tweet or email you this video idea last night, but I eventually decided against it...think I've been spending too much time on UA-cam.
just a small remark... The G9ii has 16bit raws. So not an advantage of the OM1ii on that.
Wow! Das klingt nach einem ganz wunderbaren Gefühl. 😊
Right there with you!
You really enjoy your life❤
A lovely story Jacob, how lucky is your daughter to receive such a beautiful gift on her 21st!
I use the 40-150/2.8 for everything, and sometimes it's the only lens I use on a day. Just yesterday I had a portrait session with it.
This is probably the most balanced Lumix vs. OM flagship comparison I have ever seen from you. Great job!
I did it, I did it. I bought the G9 II and I am so excited. Thanks for all your helpful videos
Enjoy! You'll love it!

Thanks for the summary!
Thanks for the great review MFN
@mipmipmipmipmip Perhaps you could expand on what you think a "generation ahead" would look like? Personally, I don't see any dramatic improvements possible to flagship cameras other then at such time as there is a breakthrough in sensor technology. Otherwise, we'll be seeing incremental refinements.
Better grip on the OM. Must be really good because I've always found my G9 to be the most comfortable of any camera I've ever used.
@@Princeton_James It's a personal feel I guess, Ive seen some prefer G9II some OM.
Dont need new gear but i watch all of these for your photography and to see where m43 is going tech wise. Beautiful work
Wow, what a detailed and practical comparison. Not seen any other comparison and analysis that is so balanced. You really know these cameras. OM Ambassador and LUMIX Ambassador badges in the post!
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate that 🙏
I have to agree. One of, if not the, best camera comparison videos I've ever seen.
One of the best and most helpful comparisons I’ve watched in a long while. Thank you.
One of my favorite videos…and I don’t own either camera! Nicely done! Plus I add my vote for more ‘small’ m43 cameras (I see other comments in that regard)!
Great one Emily, good to see another comparison. Both are great in different areas and both are capable.
Thank you! Yes I agree 100% right tool for the right job 😊
As always, great comparison. A brand ambassador we can trust. Much appreciated!
You can’t trust ambassadors. There shills even if they’re not trying to be.
This is the best comparison video between theese two cameras I´ve seen so far. Well done!
Thanks so much for that I really appreciate it 🙏 I was concerned it as it was a bit longer than my usual videos but I tried really hard to get it right
@@MicroFourNerds You have so earned these complements.
@@markbielick2313 And this is one reason we keep buying more cameras - looking for "ideal". Ask me know I know. 🙂
Agreed!
I have been checking your videos for a bit longer than a week when I started to get into micro four thirds (not leaving Full Frame, just want something more portable and still at a higher level), and I really want to thank you for being so authentic and engaging. You really know how to make sense of the system for your audience. 🙏 Thank you
Thanks so much! So glad you've found my videos helpful
Hi Emily, I've been deep in comparison about these two cameras. I really appreciate this incredibly well-thought out perspective. thank you!
Do you use any Panasonic lenses on your OM-1 Mk II?
@@J.R.Y. Nope. Exclusively Olympus/OM System. I have some Lumix lenses I use on my E-P7 but generally I prefer the less-clinical look of most of the Oly glass
@@sambennett5203 thx!
How's the autofocus? I think G9ii is best in this aspect.
@@StartreckTu the G9 II is good, but the OM-1 Mark II is more reliable in more situations. It's also more configurable/customizable
Thanks!
Wow thanks so much! 🙏☺️
Thanks a million for this great comparison ❤
Smack on! And some wise statements along the way. Deep bow for you!
Emily, this video was very well done. You provide good detail with a comfortable delivery; not many photographers can pull that off! ❤
Why upgrade? What is the first feature of the e-m1.3 that you would like improved?
@@Emerald_City_ it's mostly just want. But I'd like better tracking as I find the tracking a bit hit or miss....but mostly just lust for new and shiny. I've got several other (newer cameras) but the controls and ergos of the em1 are my favourite.
@@si3dx and I am still looking around for a second hand E-M1 mark III...
Emily: simply a brilliant comparo. review. Just excellent. As a fellow YTer, I know what it takes to get this quality. Three thumbs up.

You are so good at nature photography! I'm always so impressed by that.
What a great review/comparison. Thank you so much!
I loved this video. Great review and super informative. Love this channel
That's a great point thank you ☺️
Yes, the lag to turn on the g9ii (and all higher end lumix cameras) does annoy me too.
@@Emerald_City_ I can’t comment on OM-1, but I am very impressed with the G9ii jpgs.
Nice, informative video Emily 😊
Former Nikon and current Fuji (xt 5) user, I bought the G9ii last year and paired it with the Leica / Panasonic 200 F2.8 to try some sports photography : Highland League Football.
Great video, it will be interesting to see how much AF improvement we get from the promised firmware update in the Autumn
Ich hoffe, dass Firmware Update wird nicht vergessen.
Great, great review and, even better, your thoughts at the end. Thanks!!!
Cracking video. Really enjoy all of your videos. Thanks for sharing.
MY favorite youtuber. thanks so much.
Excellent video.Thank you! Have a wonderful time in beautiful surroundings!
Loved hearing your opinion on these. It is so close I think regardless of which way you go you'd be happy with the result at this point.
Thank you for the nice review, helps to know where M43 is going.i am still cranking with my om10 MII 16MP, with 2 Pany f2.8 lenses.
I too combine the Pana / the Oly bodies and lenses all 4 ways with success...
Great video, was there any issues with either getting warm to hold when using, thanks
Hi, thank you for a less biased opinion of these cameras. For many years, Olympus and now OM System offer an awsome feature called Pro Capture. Out of curiousity, does Panasonic have a similar feature?
They do yes, it's called Pre Burst mode on Lumix
as always, great and thorough review!
Your last point was the one that swung it for me. I got hold of the G9 mk2 and didn't feel comfortable holding it. That's just me and my hands, nothing to do with what the camera can do. My OM1 mk2 is on order. Thank you for a great video.
Thank you for this great comparison! Much appreciated!
@@sweden_ove2074 Hahaha yeah sometimes it's suprising !
Lumix G9II user from Seattle here, oh heeeyyy that's awesome, had no idea you like visiting the area!
Great comparison Emily. Thank you. Saving for the OM 1 ii . Moving from my original G9. Just can't get enough bif keepers!
You can`t make a better comparison like that! I don`t mean the technical thing but the way. Chapeau!
Really appreciate the super informative advice based on real world experience from a professional
Lumix G9ii. The one and only!
It's a beaut!
Excellent video Emily. You really nailed it.
✨✨👏🏻👏🏻 best comparison !!
OM-1 update 1.7 is a big improve on subject recognition like birds. There also is a update for the Om-1 Mark 2. Ihope you will test it to.
While I haven’t checked hi res mode, my G9ii raw files are 16 bit. Coupled with the extra megapixels and a fairly big embedded jpeg would explain the difference in raw file sizes.
Really useful comparison. I went out and bought the G9ii for the trade in $1,100
Excellent video.
Hi Emily,
Great video. Thank you very much 🙏
I will chose the OM1 MarkII.
Great review thanks, so in conclusion you NEED! to have both cameras 😂
Hi. Great video. Which one would you choose for kitesurfing photography? With Mechanical or electronic shutter? Which burst mode? Thank you :)
Interesting! Thanks for that! I should have compared the two different high res modes and had a pixel peep
Agree, never use HHHR on the OM-1, frequently use it on the G9ii
@@MicroFourNerds I've done the test many times. I do a lot of righ-res landscapes I even included my Nikon Z7II in the comparison. The G9II out resolves the Nikon by a small amount, and is far better than the OM-1. The only time the Nikon is preferred is when there is a lot of movement in the image. I wish the processor on the G9II was faster, because it takes twice as long to develop each image compared to the OM-1. When you merge 6 images together for a high res shot, the added time is difficult to adjust for.
Both camera's exceed my photography abilities.
Absolutely love your videos, this was by far the best comparison I've watched, fan for life!
Especially the HHHR is made for images outside where you don't use a tripod and can't wait until actually nothing moves.
i thought the 16-bit is needed because it blends 2 ISO values during readout?
