What a great thing when a unknown guy just make THE BEST real world use review of the camera that I'm interested. Great video. I'm interested in Panasonic L mount (or Fuji X, still undecided) for photography mostly. I was told that the AF is good, at least good enough. Can you tap the screen for the focus sticking to a subject when he is moving? And for hot pixels, the Nikon Z6 II have this problem. Not a big deal if you remember going to menu and doing a "Pixel Mapping" before shooting a session. That erase or fix hot pixels. I think it could be the same with Panasonic.
I watched it to the end. Absolutely agreed with not really recommending it for photo-only folks. For video, however, it's the best value if you don't need seamless 4k+ HFR video.
I have an s5ii for maybe 60-40 photo-video and I love it for both. The UI to me is nearly perfect. I'm a busy dad of small kids so sometimes I go a week or two without shooting (sad) but when I pick it up I'm able to do everything I want without skipping a beat because it's just so intuitive. The xpan crop for landscapes is one of my favorite features along with handheld high res. Also just brand reputation-wise. They rolled out major updates with full on functionality upgrades that were never promised or expected. That's a classy move and why I'd prefer to give Lumix my money rather than another brand who paywalls basic things like weather sealing and dual card slots into their "pro" lineups that still have less features for more money than the s5ii.
really enjoyed this. I own a s5iix and black magic full frame. Both of which are amazing and flawed. Love how you noticed the lens mount potential problem, I thought this was just me being silly. I do however think it is an unbelievable camera for its price point and I find it hard to come away from due to the things I love. keep it up and thanks for great review.

I would go for the original S5 but the old contrast auto focus I fear would struggle a little as we are planning to have all three cameras unmanned in fixed positions hence the improved AF in the S5ii is more assuring to capture movement. @jake how long does the black balancing take on the S5iix? Definitely hear you re: not having that problem on Sony. However, when comparing with RED cameras (ua-cam.com/video/IM3epUuxxxg/v-deo.htmlsi=1KqqzeLrXGHfK2L-) they specifically recommend black-shading before/after large temperature changes, exposure changes, and firmware updates. It can also be a best practice to do this monthly or bi-weekly if it comes up often. Does the black shading do a good job of fixing these hot pixels? Just ordered the S5iix hence my curiousity haha. Cheers man happy shooting!
@@thatjakegriffin but how are the results using only in body stabilizer (no EIS) with open gate? Is good enough for ninja walking and careful movement?
I've had mine for a little over a year. Great camera. I use it for run n gun travel videos. Stabilization is perfect. I shoot everything exclusively handheld, I don't carry any stabilizers or a tripod with me. I combined my S5IIx into a rig with Blackmagic VideoAssist and SmallRig V-mount batteries. A real small cinema camera. BRAW is wonderful to work with in DaVinci.
Yes I can see how for travel/run and gun it's so powerful, especially with all the stabilisation tools! And the Video Assist and B-RAW is my next step with the camera, can't wait to get my hands on it!
Very good long term review. 👍🏻 I was surprised by the build quality complaints. I've had several l-mount Panasonics and never experienced such issues. I hope such annoying problems won't show up on my S5iix.
Excellent review! The S5II and S5IIx are both a great "bang for the buck!" I have no complaints about the autofocus and have seen other reviewers rate it higher than you did here, but I'm sure that Lumix's first generation of hybrid phase-detect AF has some catching up to do.
Thank you! Appreciate it. 😁 It's just my experience and opinion after all, but yeah I've found it to be a bit more jumpy than other cameras. It definitely doesn't detract from everything else it does well though, and Lumix are moving in the right direction on all fronts now. 🙂

Apologies I'm a bit late responding here so hope it's gone well since picking it up! The negatives are annoying to me, but not necessarily to everyone else. I still wouldn't be without it and it literally allows me to do what I do for a living every day. I can live with the compromises for what it offers right now!
Thanks for this, it's very useful to know your experience. Seriously considering the S5IIx, particularly because of its anamorphic options and IBIS tuned for anamorphic. It's good to learn your experience of hot pixels too. I've had them on all the cameras I've used at some point, particularly doing night timelapses with long exposures, and filming at night at high ISOs. My R5C has a few that show up in night shots but it has to be sent off to have them fixed, and my Z Cam F6 gets them after night timelapses, but they can be reset in camera. Having the option to remap them in camera is super useful - but it's always a pain when these show up! If someone could create an auto hot pixel fix tool in NLEs using AI that would be amazing (though probably unrealistic...) 😉
Aha I know! That'd be great a tool to have in an NLE, I'm sure not impossible one day though! But glad to hear of your experience as well with completely different cameras. It's obviously a thing that happens but it sounds like it can be more hassle with other cameras to fix, so I guess it is worth giving Lumix some kudos to it. Definitely recommend you trying out an S5IIX if you think it could appeal to you! 🙂
I've watched so many videos and this was the only one that was honest and thorough. The others were clearly promoting a particular brand and were sugar coating. Thanks for such a helpful review!
That's what it's all about! It's got to be right for you, and if it isn't, and I've helped you with that realisation, then that's great news! Really glad I could assist you! 😊
Completely new to all things photography/videography. I love taking photos of plants/flowers and insects/birds when out walking, using an iPhone ( obviously is not good, and limited editing on phone). My son wants to get into video, so been looking at the S5iiX for us both! Hope to learn more!
Ah brilliant! I wish you both well on your journey in to this exciting realm! And no matter the camera, composition and lighting is key first when learning, so you can definitely do that with a phone. Some of my favourite landscapes have been on my phone, and basically unedited. But if you want to push the realms of video, there are some great cameras out there. S5IIX is great as you can see, but I'd also say there are some great cheaper DSLR or mirrorless alternatives if you both want to get started first! 🙂
I would recommend using fan control on full during long sessions.. that will effectively prevent a hot pixel. My S5 had this issue during long exposure but hopefully its something that doesn’t happen with the S5ii. I know its not ideal especially of using a mic on the camera but for wireless it wouldn’t be a problem.
Yeah it's a good point, admittedly I've always left it in Auto1 but I think if I ever have a long day with it again I'll definitely bump it in to fast 👌
Thank you! Really glad to hear that 😊 And fun fact, all the broll you see of the S5IIX was shot with an S1 or S5 I borrowed! 😊 Really enjoyed using them
I always heard, when there are lot's of people in the picture the af isn't so good. But you can choose the main subject, which subject/people want to focus . I haven't got problem in this situations.
Great video Jake 😊 First time watcher, and subbed. Mostly a video shooter here but, as happens, was unexpectedly pressed into service as a stills photographer with the S5iiX, on a studio shoot for a public street art display. It was a personal milestone and a thrill. The 96MP mode was used on posed shots with constant lighting, and I used my Atomos Ninja to check focus, as I was paranoid about that!
Ah thank you! And that's great! So great to be able to know the camera could handle that job for you no problem! I'm yet to find the moment to use the 96mp mode but I'm sure I won't be disappointed! And you can never be too careful about checking focus! 😊
Crazy to hear about the mounting of lenses. I have 5 - S5 IIX and although not recommended, I do know I hold the Mount button through out the mounting of my lenses 😅 never had an issue and you will not hear a click. But just checked all of them and if I did not depress the Mount button throughout the full turn, the lenses all click into place. I too come from Sony… absolutely no regrets and the Autofocus honestly is on par… you do have to understand what AF mode is best for a situation and it will be spot on. I am just as confident with the S5 IIX as I was with my A7Siii. The Shutter Angle, Anamorphic Support with IBIS, Color Science, 6K Open Gate, SSD Recording and no overheating are all welcomed additions.
Yeah it's a weird one! Definitely not a common issue clearly but I have found it, it is random though so it's not even something I can just replicate on demand. But completely agree with everything else, the additions make it shine right now and will happily take them over some minor things I've found!
Could you elaborate a bit on the AF mode part? I'm thinking of picking either this or an A7IV up for UA-cam, cinematic videography, portraits, and wedding photography. The AF is LITERALLY the only thing pushing me towards the Sony at the moment.
This was very informative seeing as how I am looking at getting a second video camera. I am a videographer and I currently use the Panasonic S1H. Given the build quality issues you mentioned, I will consider the BS1H instead. Thank you for a great review and keep up the good work.
nice might have to buy this one .I wanna get into street photography and just film now I'm basically a rookie but I used to do photography in high school but that was over 8 years ago . I know its not all about gear but I want a solid camera to begin with .
No doubt the S5IIX (and the S5II especially as it's cheaper and yet essentially the same for photography) is a solid camera that will take you from wherever you are now in to as far as it'll allow if you put the time in! 😁
Great overview. The S5ii and S5iix are cameras I'm considering on getting. I have the Sony FX30, which is a great camera. And it's the first camera that I will probably keep even if I look at other systems. Congrats on breaking 100 subs. (It was 120 when I watched). Props to us small channels!
Ah thank you so much, really appreciate your support! 😁 And I watched Gerald Undone video highlighting how good the IBIS is on the FX30 the other day, and how much he loves using it on his studio tours, so definitely still a keeper of a camera! But Lumix have definitely got the FF side of things covered there for IBIS too 🙂
@@thatjakegriffin Exactly. I started with a GH5. Even shot a feature film with it. I really like the skin tones of Lumix cameras. Which is why I'm looking at Lumix again. That and the FF power and stabilization that is second to none.
Absolutely amazing video man, should have hundreds of thousands views. So much valuable information! How do you think, is the performance of video AF good enough for shooting erratically moving toddlers? I really want stable handheld footage, and the Lumix system seems the best for this as you mentioned. But at the same time AF is not perfect. But is it good enough you'd say? Many thanks!
Thank you so much for the kind words there! 😁 So for stability, and more over the choices in camera for stability, no question, the Lumix range is brilliant. I can say though that the AF is not perfect, not foolproof, and it really needs tweaking depending on the subject, however with a bit of patience and acceptance that it will get it right most but not all the time, yes it's good enough. I think Human detection helps a lot, but I find I really need to turn the af speeds down to their lowest to stop too much erratic focus hunting.
Have you tried an external usb type c hub? It might add more bulkiness to the camera, but if you have a hub with two usb type c inputs, one for power and another one for data transfer it should work fine I would guess.
Recording to external SSD (2TB) at 5.8K (open gate) 10bit ProRes 422 HQ is possible which provides extra room for cropping (i.e., 4K, 2.39:1 or 16:9 aspect ratio) in post.
I would avoid E stabilization high in general unless you're running with the camera. The crop is a huge 1.42x so you sacrifice on the excellent low light performance of the camera and as you stated, lose a lot of detail. Additionally I've also found that the AF becomes worse in E stabilization high for some reason. E stabilization standard is enough to remove the wobbling you get with just IBIS wider than 24mm, and is effective down to like 16mm or so, which is all I want. About hot pixels, the internal noise reduction seems to remove it pretty well. And for photography, there is one feature that the S5IIX and S5II have that no other FF camera has. 96MP Handheld high resolution mode and it works great. The motion compensation algorithms are also fantastic. Great breakdown of your pros and cons of the camera.
Thank you for watching! Really happy to hear that! Really interesting points there. Completely agree with you as well. Definitely not worth using the high mode unless 1080p and stable footage is priority, but interesting to hear about the AF in that mode, not sure if I noticed that but that might explain why some of my shots also weren't as sharp as I'd like them 🤔 Will keep an eye out for that. I will probably try using internal NR as well. I've always been told no NR is the best thing but it's probably not a bad idea going forward. And yes! The 96mp HR mode is great but annoyingly, I keep forgetting to use it when I'm out and about for some of the landscapes I shoot! 😅 Have to remind myself to use it more and more.
I'm on the fence right now, waiting if there is some discount or bundle promotion to get the S5IIX, or maybe considering the S5II + raw update + BMVA/Ninja V for the same price. The FX30, A7SIII, Nikon Z6III, Z8... all look more tempting from a local market perspective since I could get them here in my country with warranty vs importing the Lumix at my own risk. However, insightful videos like yours make me wanna take the risk... Thanks for sharing!
No worries! And really valid point there. It's not just about the specs but also the practicality of what the body, the lenses, the system mean to you if you invest. So definitely worth putting in the research and weighing up the pros and cons, but if I've helped in either way towards that then that's great news! 😊 All the best with it!
@@thatjakegriffin Just bought the S5IIX and Sigma 28-70 2,8. Now waiting for it to get to the end of the world, it will take long but will be worth it, I'm sure. Thanks!
I use the e-stabilisation options on my S52X a lot, interesting to hear your thoughts on the sharpness, i have to shoot more without stab, to see if has an impact on my image. Thanks for the tip.
No problem! As I say, it's a small annoyance but with features like that you have to decide what matters to you most in that moment, and if you're exporting for 1080p it probably doesn't matter too much, but glad I could provide some insight!
I just want to take photos of cars that are still and a few maybe walk around videos, maybe some moving shots at some point. What would you say I need for some really good shots with say a 80mil lens or something. Im new to photography and just want the best picture quality at this point to advertise cars. Thanks for your help and keep up the good work
No worries! I'd say to get in to it, the 20-60mm kit lens will carry you far. 70% of what I shoot on my camera for professional and personal stuff is on the kit lens. No it's not the best quality lens, and it's got a variable changing aperture depending on what focal length you use, but to literally slap the 20-60mm on the body and get shooting for a wide range of shots on the go, it's a fantastic and easy starting point if you're new, and it'll show you what wide angle to medium telephoto focal lengths can offer you, which might inform your future buying decisions down the line. If you're keen to pickup a prime also from the start, I'd look at the 50mm (which is really cheap and usually in good deals as well with the body) as it's a great intro to what primes can do for you without being too tight or too wide, but using faster apertures and getting sharper results etc. 👍
Thank you! Admiteddly no, although I am planning to get my hands on some of their medium format cameras and lenses in the near future as I am very intrigued by them, at least from a photography perspective 🙂
Thanks for the video! I didn't buy the s5iix because it didn't have a LPF and I'm afraid of moire in stills and video, so I'm now thinking of getting the lumix S1H. Thoughts? Cheers
You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching! 🙂 And great question, my experience is yes, you'll definitely get moire on the S5IIX, although weirdly not so much in the 4K modes, but definitely in Open Gate or ProRes I've found it. And then when shooting the same subject with the same lighting if I switch to 4K, it's gone? So I wonder what specific algorithm the camera uses to go down to 4K from the native 6K. I will say it's just one of those things you have to accept if you get the S5II range, but it's not the end of the world, and given the detail on the camera, it's really shines when you see that 4K or 6K crisp quality image on your screen. However if phase detect autofocus and external SSD recording aren't a must for you, there are some great deals on the S1H right now!
10:08 please explain how do you want such small camera to have a battery that last longer than it is today? It’s not like there are no work around available today’s to fix that. Did you tried an USB-C hub which will allow you to have one USB-C for power and at least another one for your SSD?
How is the moire effect here while shooting compared to the A7IV? The S5IIX does not have an AA filter, but I don't know if the A7IV does either, as the answers to this vary.
Honestly, I haven't had much time with the A7IV so I'm not entirely sure. I know the A7III had an AA filter so I never really had a problem there. With the S5IIX, moire is definitely noticeable especially on the Open Gate 6K, even with materials or subjects you wouldn't assume have moire, like book covers for example. However the 4K modes I've found don't seem to show as much if at all.
Definitely as good, and has a lot more options for video! Better is subjective but I'd say just in terms of options and tech, yes it's better, however Sony's detection and hunting was a lot more refined a few years ago compared to Panasonic today in my opinion
Was the video from 2:05 to 2:10 recorded on the s5 iix? If yes, then what lens was used? I am looking for a video that shows what recording someone indoors with an s5 iix looks like.
So if you're referring to all my talking head A-Roll footage, then yes that was shot on the S5IIX using the 50mm Lumix f1.8. Personally a bit too tight of a focal length in my opinion for the space I'm using but I really wanted more depth of field for this shot than my 20-60mm would offer 🙂
Completely agree, it fits its bracket well, but Lumix need to flesh out the rest of the range, and they need to not just match the competition, but outdo them for the next 2 years at least.
I'll be honest, when your talking and cropping in, it's a little jarring to constantly crop back and forth when the shot is already pretty tight to begin with. Good review though keep it up :)
Hot pixels are certainly annoying, but that will happen on any camera if you shoot enough on it. What is good though on balance is that the pixel refresh tool in the camera does seem to eliminate or prevent that issue entirely. And autofocus is certainly good enough, but it's a subjective point for sure. As I say, these are not things that put me off the camera or stop me from creating with it, but they certainly are noticeable to me when I've been using it actively for a year now.
I've had it for about a year and I use it for my business/fitness/Gym content! Such a game changer and im learning newer and better setting every few weeks! Thanks for dropping this video

I know its not ideal especially of using a mic on the camera but for wireless it wouldn’t be a problem.
Yeah it's a good point, admittedly I've always left it in Auto1 but I think if I ever have a long day with it again I'll definitely bump it in to fast 👌
Have to say, really enjoyed it, very well presented.(s5ii,s5 & s1 user)
Thank you! Really glad to hear that 😊
And fun fact, all the broll you see of the S5IIX was shot with an S1 or S5 I borrowed! 😊 Really enjoyed using them
Very nice
Thanks for sharing all that man! Great vid.
Thank you! 😄
Do you have hot pixels problem?
Could you elaborate a bit on the AF mode part?
I'm thinking of picking either this or an A7IV up for UA-cam, cinematic videography, portraits, and wedding photography.
The AF is LITERALLY the only thing pushing me towards the Sony at the moment.
super honest , very informative ! exactly what I was looking for subscribed ;)
Cheers man! 😄
This was very informative seeing as how I am looking at getting a second video camera. I am a videographer and I currently use the Panasonic S1H. Given the build quality issues you mentioned, I will consider the BS1H instead. Thank you for a great review and keep up the good work.
Thank you! 😁 Really glad it was helpful for you. And yes I love the build quality of the S1H!
I want the Lumix S5II so much
very helpful video! Especially the E-stab with open gate
Thank you! 😊
I love it for both videography and photography and it shines in both
I also have an S1H, but I find myself grabbing the s5iix more often, it's just so little, and still awesome quality
Thanks for getting into the specifics of the downsides.
No problem! I think it's good to be honest about it from every angle!
nice might have to buy this one .I wanna get into street photography and just film now I'm basically a rookie but I used to do photography in high school but that was over 8 years ago .
And I watched Gerald Undone video highlighting how good the IBIS is on the FX30 the other day, and how much he loves using it on his studio tours, so definitely still a keeper of a camera!
So for stability, and more over the choices in camera for stability, no question, the Lumix range is brilliant.
@@thatjakegriffin Thank you for the detailed answer, appreciate it!
Great video mate, very helpful! Another subscriber :)
Thank you! Really appreciate that! 😁
wow this is a great review, thank you
Thank you so much! 😁
Great job Jake!
Thank you! 😁
Love s5ii
Great Video. Thanks for sharing your experience and not just copy other content! :)
Ah thank you! 😀
Very good and deep dive video. Keep it coming.👍
Really appreciate that! 😊 Thank you, I will do!
Thank you! 🤝
I use Sony but looking for something with more IBIS for travel videos without using gimbal or tripod....
Wonderful content, NOT fair that you have only 139 subscribers, well doing my part, making it 140😍
Legend! Thank you for your support! 😊
nice review, thanks for your works.
Thank you! 🙂
Great info! Very helpful. Thanks:)
No problem! Glad you found it helpful! 😊
This was great!! Wondering if you are also familiar with Fujifilm’s lineup by comparison?
Thank you! Admiteddly no, although I am planning to get my hands on some of their medium format cameras and lenses in the near future as I am very intrigued by them, at least from a photography perspective 🙂
Excellent video. Congratulations
Ah thank you! 🙌
@@thatjakegriffin thank you so much for your detailed reply!
Will the E-stabilization minimize the ibis wobble? Shot a video yesterday and the jello and ibis wobble was noticeable on some slow panning shots
nice to see a review from a non lumix shill , you got a sub from me.
Thank you! Appreciate it! 👌
10:08 please explain how do you want such small camera to have a battery that last longer than it is today? It’s not like there are no work around available today’s to fix that.
Did you tried an USB-C hub which will allow you to have one USB-C for power and at least another one for your SSD?
Thank you!
No problem! 😀
How about moire issue?
Hello. Is the autofocus as good as the A7iii?
Definitely as good, and has a lot more options for video! Better is subjective but I'd say just in terms of options and tech, yes it's better, however Sony's detection and hunting was a lot more refined a few years ago compared to Panasonic today in my opinion
Nice vid :)
Thank you!
Привет 👋 Джейк, я досмотрел до конца😄
Thank you! 😁
Personally a bit too tight of a focal length in my opinion for the space I'm using but I really wanted more depth of field for this shot than my 20-60mm would offer 🙂
is the v log mode saved on the progress files?
When you say progress files? What do you mean?
@thatjakegriffin oh sorry i meant Apple prores
@@AIBEKNEO Ah okay! Yes it is, it's V-Log baked in like normal H.264 and H.265 recording 🙂
@@thatjakegriffin oh oh that's bad.
@@thatjakegriffin I ordered s5iix weeks ago
already subscribe you. detail explanation of this camera. thanks mate.
Thanks for continuing to support the channel! 🙌
I was thinking about this unit, but I think I'll stick with Canon.
I have question, can magnify to check focus while recording in s5iix?
Yes you can in Manual Focus!
Look good as a mid ranger. But Lumix needs to seriously bring out a Flagship to take on Canon’s 5RC and Nikon’s Z8 and 9. These have been out 3 years.
Completely agree, it fits its bracket well, but Lumix need to flesh out the rest of the range, and they need to not just match the competition, but outdo them for the next 2 years at least.
Where is the e-stabilisation crop video link you mentioned?
In the description, it's CameraRig's Video on OpenGate: ua-cam.com/video/ktPI8CUY7Bc/v-deo.html
@@thatjakegriffin Oh thank you. It didn't look like a link so I missed it.
@@Raima888s No problem! 👌
I'll be honest, when your talking and cropping in, it's a little jarring to constantly crop back and forth when the shot is already pretty tight to begin with. Good review though keep it up :)
Thank you! And appreciate the feedback! Noted 😊
Totally shocked. Awesome Video - But 270 Subs? I was expecting more in the likes 100k
Hope this will grow soon :)
Ah thank you, that's very kind! And yes I hope so! 😊
Dummy battery works well

Poor Autofocus and Hot pixel are a deal breaker in my opinion. Especially if you shoot videos!
Seems like it has so muxh value compared to sony.
I am 179 🎉
Thank you! 🙌😁
Auto focusing not good lumix s5ii ..is so bad auto focusing 50fps.. 100fps...
