Using the Lumix S5IIX day to day long term on loads of professional work as well as in my personal life has given me a lot of unique insights to the camera, and so I have plenty to share on its good, and not so good points.

really enjoyed this. I own a s5iix and black magic full frame. Both of which are amazing and flawed. Love how you noticed the lens mount potential problem, I thought this was just me being silly. I do however think it is an unbelievable camera for its price point and I find it hard to come away from due to the things I love. keep it up and thanks for great review.
I want the Lumix S5II so much
Will the E-stabilization minimize the ibis wobble? Shot a video yesterday and the jello and ibis wobble was noticeable on some slow panning shots
Personally i think i need to be satisfied that Panasonics AF is goid enough. If you are wanting perfection along with the awesome new AI processing than go with Sony. If you want a solid system with beautiful colors, handling, stabilization etc go with Lumix.
Great review. I learned a few things about my S5 II X.
I always heard, when there are lot's of people in the picture the af isn't so good. But you can choose the main subject, which subject/people want to focus . I haven't got problem in this situations.
Have you tried an external usb type c hub? It might add more bulkiness to the camera, but if you have a hub with two usb type c inputs, one for power and another one for data transfer it should work fine I would guess.
Very good long term review. 👍🏻 I was surprised by the build quality complaints. I've had several l-mount Panasonics and never experienced such issues. I hope such annoying problems won't show up on my S5iix.
What a great thing when a unknown guy just make THE BEST real world use review of the camera that I'm interested. Great video. I'm interested in Panasonic L mount (or Fuji X, still undecided) for photography mostly. I was told that the AF is good, at least good enough. Can you tap the screen for the focus sticking to a subject when he is moving? And for hot pixels, the Nikon Z6 II have this problem. Not a big deal if you remember going to menu and doing a "Pixel Mapping" before shooting a session. That erase or fix hot pixels. I think it could be the same with Panasonic.
How about moire issue?
Poor Autofocus and Hot pixel are a deal breaker in my opinion. Especially if you shoot videos!
Hot pixels are certainly annoying, but that will happen on any camera if you shoot enough on it. What is good though on balance is that the pixel refresh tool in the camera does seem to eliminate or prevent that issue entirely. And autofocus is certainly good enough, but it's a subjective point for sure. As I say, these are not things that put me off the camera or stop me from creating with it, but they certainly are noticeable to me when I've been using it actively for a year now.
10:08 please explain how do you want such small camera to have a battery that last longer than it is today? It’s not like there are no work around available today’s to fix that. Did you tried an USB-C hub which will allow you to have one USB-C for power and at least another one for your SSD?
Wonderful review.. I was wanting to buy this camera but i changed my mind! God bless you sir and thanks for the video..
That's what it's all about! It's got to be right for you, and if it isn't, and I've helped you with that realisation, then that's great news! Really glad I could assist you! 😊
@@thatjakegriffin I decided to go for the Nikon Z f and I'm loving it. The Nikon Z f is perfect to my liking.. Thanks once again.. God bless 🙏🏼
Hello. Is the autofocus as good as the A7iii?
Definitely as good, and has a lot more options for video! Better is subjective but I'd say just in terms of options and tech, yes it's better, however Sony's detection and hunting was a lot more refined a few years ago compared to Panasonic today in my opinion
I was shooting Lumix M43 in the past. Since then, I have shoot Canon, Nikon Z and Fuji X. After doing my circle I got back to Lumix and got S5II and S1R. I wasn't completely happy with any of those systems. Basically Lumix would give you an entry level body for €1000 with all of the features they have, weather sealed, great build quality, great IBIS, pixel shift etc. if they had such a body. Well I mean they give you all this in the new entry level S5D which is a competitor for Nikon Z5, Canon RP / R8 or Fuji X-S20 and for this price it basically kills them all.
The S5D is a really interesting one, somewhat confusing and somewhat genius as well. It doesn't leap on anything they've done already rather it rehashes old tech, whereas at least the S9 was a new kind of body and purpose, but as you say the S5D actually beats those competitor entry level bodies now with less crippling...
why SLOG2 and not SLOG3?
For the A7III? S-Log 2 was recommended due to 8-bit. Whenever I've used the A7SIII I've used S-log 3 👌
I just want to take photos of cars that are still and a few maybe walk around videos, maybe some moving shots at some point. What would you say I need for some really good shots with say a 80mil lens or something. Im new to photography and just want the best picture quality at this point to advertise cars. Thanks for your help and keep up the good work
No worries! I'd say to get in to it, the 20-60mm kit lens will carry you far. 70% of what I shoot on my camera for professional and personal stuff is on the kit lens. No it's not the best quality lens, and it's got a variable changing aperture depending on what focal length you use, but to literally slap the 20-60mm on the body and get shooting for a wide range of shots on the go, it's a fantastic and easy starting point if you're new, and it'll show you what wide angle to medium telephoto focal lengths can offer you, which might inform your future buying decisions down the line. If you're keen to pickup a prime also from the start, I'd look at the 50mm (which is really cheap and usually in good deals as well with the body) as it's a great intro to what primes can do for you without being too tight or too wide, but using faster apertures and getting sharper results etc. 👍
Thank you!
No problem! 😀
nice might have to buy this one .I wanna get into street photography and just film now I'm basically a rookie but I used to do photography in high school but that was over 8 years ago . I know its not all about gear but I want a solid camera to begin with .
No doubt the S5IIX (and the S5II especially as it's cheaper and yet essentially the same for photography) is a solid camera that will take you from wherever you are now in to as far as it'll allow if you put the time in! 😁
I'm on the fence right now, waiting if there is some discount or bundle promotion to get the S5IIX, or maybe considering the S5II + raw update + BMVA/Ninja V for the same price. The FX30, A7SIII, Nikon Z6III, Z8... all look more tempting from a local market perspective since I could get them here in my country with warranty vs importing the Lumix at my own risk. However, insightful videos like yours make me wanna take the risk... Thanks for sharing!
No worries! And really valid point there. It's not just about the specs but also the practicality of what the body, the lenses, the system mean to you if you invest. So definitely worth putting in the research and weighing up the pros and cons, but if I've helped in either way towards that then that's great news! 😊 All the best with it!
@@thatjakegriffin Just bought the S5IIX and Sigma 28-70 2,8. Now waiting for it to get to the end of the world, it will take long but will be worth it, I'm sure. Thanks!
Seems like it has so muxh value compared to sony.
Oh man, im picking mine up in a few days, youre negatives have got me scared 💀 This camera on paper sounds perfect for me. Opengate, full frame, unlimited recording, great colour is literally perfect for what i need. Im still super excited to get my hands on it and put it straight to work
Apologies I'm a bit late responding here so hope it's gone well since picking it up! The negatives are annoying to me, but not necessarily to everyone else. I still wouldn't be without it and it literally allows me to do what I do for a living every day. I can live with the compromises for what it offers right now!
Recording to external SSD (2TB) at 5.8K (open gate) 10bit ProRes 422 HQ is possible which provides extra room for cropping (i.e., 4K, 2.39:1 or 16:9 aspect ratio) in post.
Absolutely amazing video man, should have hundreds of thousands views. So much valuable information! How do you think, is the performance of video AF good enough for shooting erratically moving toddlers? I really want stable handheld footage, and the Lumix system seems the best for this as you mentioned. But at the same time AF is not perfect. But is it good enough you'd say? Many thanks!
Thank you so much for the kind words there! 😁 So for stability, and more over the choices in camera for stability, no question, the Lumix range is brilliant. I can say though that the AF is not perfect, not foolproof, and it really needs tweaking depending on the subject, however with a bit of patience and acceptance that it will get it right most but not all the time, yes it's good enough. I think Human detection helps a lot, but I find I really need to turn the af speeds down to their lowest to stop too much erratic focus hunting.
@@thatjakegriffin Thank you for the detailed answer, appreciate it!
I have both the S1H and S5IIX, and I think I'm set for a looong time. Maybe if the S1HII is amazing, I'll switch
Was the video from 2:05 to 2:10 recorded on the s5 iix? If yes, then what lens was used? I am looking for a video that shows what recording someone indoors with an s5 iix looks like.
So if you're referring to all my talking head A-Roll footage, then yes that was shot on the S5IIX using the 50mm Lumix f1.8. Personally a bit too tight of a focal length in my opinion for the space I'm using but I really wanted more depth of field for this shot than my 20-60mm would offer 🙂
I've watched so many videos and this was the only one that was honest and thorough. The others were clearly promoting a particular brand and were sugar coating. Thanks for such a helpful review!
No worries! Really glad you thought that! 🙌😁
very helpful video! Especially the E-stab with open gate

wow this is a great review, thank you
Thank you so much! 😁
This was great!! Wondering if you are also familiar with Fujifilm’s lineup by comparison?
Thank you! Admiteddly no, although I am planning to get my hands on some of their medium format cameras and lenses in the near future as I am very intrigued by them, at least from a photography perspective 🙂
Thank you! 🤝
I just purchased the S5IIX and this video help make my decision. Thanks for all the info and hope you make more S5IIX content.
Ah wow! That's so cool, thank you for watching! Really glad I could help! 😊 Enjoy the camera!

Thanks for this, it's very useful to know your experience. Seriously considering the S5IIx, particularly because of its anamorphic options and IBIS tuned for anamorphic. It's good to learn your experience of hot pixels too. I've had them on all the cameras I've used at some point, particularly doing night timelapses with long exposures, and filming at night at high ISOs. My R5C has a few that show up in night shots but it has to be sent off to have them fixed, and my Z Cam F6 gets them after night timelapses, but they can be reset in camera. Having the option to remap them in camera is super useful - but it's always a pain when these show up! If someone could create an auto hot pixel fix tool in NLEs using AI that would be amazing (though probably unrealistic...) 😉
Aha I know! That'd be great a tool to have in an NLE, I'm sure not impossible one day though! But glad to hear of your experience as well with completely different cameras. It's obviously a thing that happens but it sounds like it can be more hassle with other cameras to fix, so I guess it is worth giving Lumix some kudos to it. Definitely recommend you trying out an S5IIX if you think it could appeal to you! 🙂
Great video Jake 😊 First time watcher, and subbed. Mostly a video shooter here but, as happens, was unexpectedly pressed into service as a stills photographer with the S5iiX, on a studio shoot for a public street art display. It was a personal milestone and a thrill. The 96MP mode was used on posed shots with constant lighting, and I used my Atomos Ninja to check focus, as I was paranoid about that!
Ah thank you! And that's great! So great to be able to know the camera could handle that job for you no problem! I'm yet to find the moment to use the 96mp mode but I'm sure I won't be disappointed! And you can never be too careful about checking focus! 😊
super honest , very informative ! exactly what I was looking for subscribed ;)
Cheers man! 😄
How is the moire effect here while shooting compared to the A7IV? The S5IIX does not have an AA filter, but I don't know if the A7IV does either, as the answers to this vary.
Honestly, I haven't had much time with the A7IV so I'm not entirely sure. I know the A7III had an AA filter so I never really had a problem there. With the S5IIX, moire is definitely noticeable especially on the Open Gate 6K, even with materials or subjects you wouldn't assume have moire, like book covers for example. However the 4K modes I've found don't seem to show as much if at all.
I've had it for about a year and I use it for my business/fitness/Gym content! Such a game changer and im learning newer and better setting every few weeks! Thanks for dropping this video
No problem! And completely agree, it teaches a lot with everything it can do! 😁

Auto focusing not good lumix s5ii ..is so bad auto focusing 50fps.. 100fps...
Sony is Best..lumix not good auto focusing 50 fps..is bad😢
I'll be honest, when your talking and cropping in, it's a little jarring to constantly crop back and forth when the shot is already pretty tight to begin with. Good review though keep it up :)

hello, it was normal to switch to Lumix from the A7III, this S5II is much better and more versatile and does not heat up. I have a Sony a7sIII and I can't say that the Lumix S5II is much weaker. I think the price difference is bigger than the performance difference. (compared to a7sIII).
Yes I'd agree with that pretty much. A7SIII does offer uncropped 50/60fps and 100/120 fps at 4K which is a big step up, but for day to day video features the S5II offers a lot!
I have question, can magnify to check focus while recording in s5iix?
Yes you can in Manual Focus!
Hi Jake, will you be making a video on “periphery” items a noobie getting into Photography and/or Videography would need/use? Plenty of videos on cameras, lenses etc, but I’m stuck on tripods?, lighting, light meters ( do you still need them 😬!) and for video I know from my youngest son capturing vods from game play… storage! What recommendations are there for data storage etc! As you are starting your channel I’m sure you have lots of ideas! Here are a few from someone who know nothing about the world of Photography/Videography. And one more! How can you share or even make a modest income from either!
Great questions! These are definitely some things I'm thinking about now as I plan out future content! I'd say there are some great videos out there by people already who have tested a lot of tripods and lights etc. but I would be happy to look at things I haven't seen discussed much or that I've had experience with. Also I want to have more discussion pieces about things we face as videographers and photographers, including costs and client management, so yes all valid questions! I'm really open to ideas so appreciate the comment! 🙌
