  • Sci-fi filmmaker Roland Emmerich, writer and director of such films as Stargate, 1998’s Godzilla and Independence Day is returning to the big screen with his latest sci-fi disaster flick Moonfall. In this video I'd like to discuss what we know so far about this film including exploring the real science of the Moon and the many conspiracy theories surrounding it which served as Emmerich’s inspiration for the story.

I've got no theories, but a strange fact is when the astronauts set down in 1969 they said "it rang like a bell". Another thing I recently learned is everytime we look at the moon we are seeing the same side, so there really is another side of the moon we've never seen.

Noticing a lot of themes along these lines in movies in recent years. First there was Transformers: Last Knight, with Unicron being the earth all along. Then there was Eternals, with planets being eggshells for birthing celestials. Now there’s Moonfall, with the moon being an artificial house for the nanotech swarm.
The subtheme seems to entail titan like entities inside planets. Speaking of which, I guess you could include Ego the Living Planet?

The 1st trailer had me interested, a dark sci-fi thriller. This new one dropped though so that interest dropped a bit....light hearted big budget comedy sci-fi. I suppose they want as many people as possible? As I watched your video...and theories about the moon being constructed my first thought was, of course, first men in the moon and I was not surprised you included that! If Mr stargate is looking for a trilogy I do hope the next trailer isn't as comedic as this new one. That being said!! I watched ghost busters 2016 and liked it so I'm not much of a critic. 😆

Makes me think of this Aberrant RPG campaign i played with some friend back in the day. Our characters had extremely high levels of power, and we went around generally screwing things up on something of a cosmic scale. One of the players jokingly said, "we hollowed out the moon and turned it into a really cool fort." And I mean, it was an okay fort...
Also calls to mind an episode of Superfriends, where the moon was an egg that hatched a giant space bird. Seems generally as plausible as Emmerich's plot.
This movie was not on my radar. I had heard of it, and immediately dismissed it. His disaster films are just not very good, you know? And there are certain sci-fi ideas that have become copy-and-paste ideas. "Nano-swarm AI..." Good god, man. The SyFy channel was crapping out these movie ideas fifteen years ago. Enough with the nano-swarm AI. Give me a quark-gluon plasma artificial intelligence that is quantum entangled with every photon it has ever emitted or will emit in the future. Give me a network of sentient tyrant suns at war with each other. Give me an AI landlord named Larry that has decided to evict humanity from earth so it can renovate the property and turn it into a timeshare for intergalactic retirees.
Hell, do a big screen remake of Space: 1999. Anything but this rehashed crap.

Hmmmm. So it's another whacked-out bullshit action movie with impossible as the main plot device. Got it. Like invading aliens, or giant Godzillas, or the sun about to stop fusing hydrogen, or the earth's core will stop spinning, or hey! what about we send oil riggers on shuttles to a comet to do what? Blow it up with nukes of course!
Now I'm fine with suspending disbelief - Arrakis, Ring World, MIddle Earth, Seven Kingdoms. These all work because we *know* they are fictional, the authors go to lengths to build the universe the story is in and then we read the story.
But disaster sci-fi is mostly built on bullshit. The planet core cannot suddenly stop spinning because angular momentum, the planet crust doesn't suddenly all slip sideways in some few minutes so the grossly mispronounced Drakensberg is now the highest peak on the planet.
And the moon doesn't fall dammit. Because orbital dynamics. We know it's mass because orbital dynamics. We know what's on the far side (NOT the dark side) because satellites because LRO, we know the size of the moon because telescopes. And it ain't hollow because a) it would then orbit somewhere else and b) we can measure moonquakes by dropping Saturn second stages on it.
Rant over. Can some please go out and hire some disaster screenwriters with imagination AND a sense of what is real?
