Thank you so much for bringing back the Focus RS, you have grown so much since then and I’m so happy to see it up against the new competition. Might be from 2016 but still throws punches in its segment. Now sad that it couldn’t make hot laps 😔
Potentially as fast, but if the Golf was a second quicker on this day than previously, the M2 could also be a second quicker in these conditions. Either way, the Civic is impressively fast, but while it may match the M2 in lap times, it sadly isn't anywhere near it for fun. Sadly because I so badly wanted Honda to stop their lap time obsession and make fun cars again, but alas no...
@@GetOffMyLog wow do you consider that tight? It's at least twice as wide as an average mountain road here. Maybe that's why these hot hatches are not that fast

@@Spiritcr1jsher extra 6lb in terms of unsprung weight for the suspension is a lot lol, putting more width tires mean more weight and suspension re-work
Final Drive is what people don't realize makes the difference. If it has enough in the torque curve to pull the gears it'll have a wave you feel. If not, it does that... I have the highway gear in my truck; 3.55 ratio. 70 mph at 2,000rpm but with that you get 1-2 shift at 35mph and the 2-3 at 70.. with 4 & 5 being overdrive. So I run OD off to avoid it shifting too much in the city, negating the "milage gains" though which is pointless because it has enough torque to leave in 2nd and 4/5 doesn't shift until 40-50 with lockup around 52mph. So old auto or new Manual, gearing matters
Not that simple to tell - when the overall tyre diameter is a different size, not to mention there is slightly different power. Wasn't going to know until the test.
Yeah, I feel like that could account for literally all of the time difference to be honest. Would love to see this done again but with a set of FL5 wheels shoved on the FK8. Car wouldn't be set up for them but I wouldn't be surprised if it was still within a couple of tenths then. Also, 265s are insane on a hot hatch. A new RWD M4 Comp only has 255 rear tyres but that has 510hp and weighs more than most towns. Those tyres and the relatively poor economy (I'm assuming not much improved since the FK8) mean the FL5 has comparable running costs to some fairly serious sports cars that it can't compete with as a driving experience- a 991 Carrera would cost the same to buy and run, at least here in the UK. In terms of driving pleasure, that's really not a comparison the FL5 wants to be part of...
@@HotHatchHero Interesting, you're correct, tyre companies clearly haven't quite got their websites sorted for that, I checked 2 registrations against 2 tyre companies thinking that would be accurate info! Either way, 265s on the FL5 is still insane for a hot hatch.
I still like the FK2 a lot too! I prefer the smaller overall dimensions of the 9th gen Civic hatch and the magic seat layout is useful. Unfortunately the FK2 Type R was never sold in Australia.

Not that I have anything to complain about with the previous one but this is a lot cleaner and more sorted out looking. Oh well, can't have everything. Great video guys
@@miriamvivo4279 I bought the FK8 in late 2020 and got it delivered in May 21 at MSRP. There were no huge markups in my region, unlike the US or elsewhere because around Europe this actually is not a popular car that ppl. actually buy as its deemed unreasonable. Had the FN2 Type R before and traded it in. Happy (again) ever since.
i’ve seen other reviews show how to turn off piped in noise while staying in type r mode and showed being able to customize gauge cluster to have whatever gauge at whatever driving setting in individual mode amongst many other great customizations. just thought i would throw that out there
Thomas, I'm super impressed with your ability to launch with the manual. And yes, as pointed out if we were comparing the fastest version of each car the DSG would make a big different. Especially in the drag races. Can you pretty please put a DSG Golf R on your track to get a time? You can borrow mine :-) Great content!
With front drive, you have to roll in the power. 1/2 clutch it until the tires bite and then drop the hammer. The hard drop after burning some clutch while finessing the traction makes for a great take-off. Unlike RWD which need the hard drop to put weigh on the rear wheels. If your launching like a RWD, you're doing all wrong.
Yes as an Elantra N owner, I get so frustrated when they do comparisons with the manual..... The DCT and the DSG are both so much faster than their manual counterparts.....
The focused man in the focus, his facial expressions were amazing you could tell what he was thinking the entire time, and when he actually spoke “what” I was cracking up.
Thanks for helping convince me I need a VW golf R! Gave my '13 GTi to my 16 yr old, bought a used '16 A5, and will upgrade to a golf R shortly. Civic is improved but still looks like a tuner for a 25 yr old and I like my heated/cooled seats and awd
Consider a late 17-18 RS I have a late 17 in blue that’s stage 2 and love it never gets old. The heated steering wheel comes in nice in the winter too 🫡
Yup, that about puts the nail in the coffin for me on the new type R, no way on the $60k-$65k plus entry point, looking how it did vs previous gen. Insane
I know there's a lot of internet hate for the looks of the previous gen but I honestly don't mind it. I would go with the older style myself....if I was in the market lol. Once I pay off my Challenger I might look in to seeing what I can get for it and my hoopty Corolla and maybe combine to the 2 cars in to one with a Type-R. You're definitely right about the price though, ouch, that's a lot of money. Hopefully some of that is due to inflated prices at the moment because that's a bummer for sure.
Great comparison video, especially between the CTR FK8 and FL5. Nice to see some of the improvements Honda's made, but as an FK8 owner I'm very happy I got my 2021 edition. Perrin motor mount upgrade is a must-do for the FK8; wheel hop is pretty much eliminated.
Great review guys! But...if you would like to make it much more interesting, you can put the wheels and tires of the FL5 on the FK8 and test it's Lap time again, as the wheels uses the same offset, it can be done! My personal thoughts and guess are that the FK8 will do the same Lap time when put on the same wheels and tires.
personally i think when Honda decided to make fk8 the fwd king they did everything to make sure its as balanced as possible, if its as easy as wheel swap to make the old one faster then you are basically calling out engineers to be incompetent
@tancock tires i agree, but wheels can be tricky. 19s might be better on 1 car but worse on the other, also with the older specially edition it came with cup 2s, lighter wheels. something they already did a test before. yet it wasn't m2 comp level kind of track time
Could be since it was a press car and the japanese are known for funny business with press cars. Civic type R is doing 4.9-5.3 compared to the 4.4-4.7 of the first press cars.
Excellent, excellent, excellent video. I love how you guys create content about the sort of scenarios and comparisons that talk about with my mates in the pub. If the GR Corolla were there, it would have been 100% perfect.

Apparently the voice command system in the new one is improved as well. 😂 However, I'm going for the GR Corolla. It's so unique, tons of character, and I love how it's AWD system works plus the special engine. I love its small size too. Icing on the cake are the creature comforts like a heated steering wheel and excellent ride handling balance. The Type R is a phenomenal choice and I don't blame those going for the Golf R, but the controls in the VW are a deal breaker for me.
Bad thing on that gr is the engine its tiny good only for those that don’t tune this little engine will need better internals to get respectable power it’s already proven that it will start breaking valve seats and who nose what else once its tuned

First and foremost the Fk8 also has shift lights. (the European anyway). If the Fk8 also had pilot sport tyres, times would have been the same with the Fl5. So I'll stick with my Fk8 anyway. I'm glad you did this test !!!
Would love to see someone doing a Track test with FK8 and FL5 using the same tyres and size, that would be very interesting and i have a feeling the results might be the same as the roll race.
@@AB-nv7bz My 2019 Type R was fun and handled well, brakes were fantastic, but I was used to cars like AMG’s 63S and ultimately wasn’t fast enough or thrilling/ special enough to keep. Much more rare and special 😎👍 10 years from now I should be able to sell it for my purchase price and still use it along the way…

What an absolute treat! I recently hooked up with your channel and was binging the drag races. I watched Type R vs Corolla 23 vs Elantra N yesterday and was dying to watch the 2023 Type R although I liked the old Type R. I'm pretty glad that the old one could beat the newer one in both the drag and roll race.
I've had over 10 new Hondas and every one of them had a noticeable break in period where they became quicker after 30-40k on the odometer. I'd be interested to see if this is the case with this car too.
I assure you that's the case, because the FL5 weighs the same. Everyone is freaking out over 60 lbs like that makes a difference. It's 2 cases of water lol. It has more power, turbo with better response, and shorter gearing. If you remember correctly they did the same thing for the Si in 2020 with the shorter final drive, and it was NOTICEABLY quicker than the 2019. FL5 is quicker. Period
It's been nearly 20 years now since the SRT-4 crashed the compact sport car scene and DOMINATED, faster than an S2000, WRX, Mustang GT, 350Z, and reliable, fastest FWD ever sold in America, for nearly 15 years till the Civic Type R finally caught up. It's great to see cars still doing it now two decades later, but wow double the price... too much money.
Front wheel drives are absolutely great. They encompass the soul of the original boy racers. Perhaps not the sexy option, but the sheer pleasure of how pointed they are, and light and nimble, means they offer a completely unique driving experience. Thumbs up to Honda for not selling out and going AWD. You're right, though, there is no way it should be slower than its predecessor.
The red carpets are just great in the FL5. Wish more manufactures had fun in their interiors like that. What a great lineup of cars. I've owned a Golf R and Focus RS and rented a Type R from Turo for a week. The car I miss the most is the Focus RS. Wish I never sold it and am in the market to buy one again. Just feels so special. The grip and pops and bangs from the car are so good and I happen to love the look. The Golf was a great all arounder but overall pretty boring when I had it as my only car. It was fast as the dickens with only a Stage 1 from APR and very comfortable and incognito. Just didn't really do it for me. I thought the Type R was awesome to drive. Even sharper than the RS and the shifter is amazing. Also so much space with the way it's laid out. I was just mostly put off by how many people are trying to race you and the sound which was nonexistent. I'm still choosing RS but if my wife would let me teach her stick, I'd be happy to have a Type R as well and have to make that difficult choice of which to take when going into the garage. Hope I'll get a chance to drive the FK8 and FL5 back to back to see how different the new one feels. Good luck to anyone trying to get one and please don't pay over sticker if you can avoid it/be patient. So glad all of these are great choices depending on who you are!
Great job on this guys. $45k plus the insane stealership markup ruins any excitement I had for the Type R. By the time you can get one without markup Honda will have raised the price to offset the difference anyways. I’ll take the better sounding Elantra N for $35k. Real curious what the prior gen Civic Type R on the same tires would do for a lap time.
I would re-race the two Type Rs after the new one has had a few thousand break-in miles. Usually you gain a few tenths once broken in. Then the comparison would be more accurate.
Wow very surprised results of the FL5 vs FK8, will this bump the used car price higher for the FK8 regular and limited LE? We will see in the future, both are nice and cool and practical, for ppl like Japanese anime May tends to like the Gundam style FK8… but really thanks you guys to record this amazing video. 👍👍🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love that Honda sticks with FWD !!!👌👌👌 Handling, And Stopping are sooo important also; and FWD helps with these two abilities!!! HONDA knows FWD brings other things to the table instead of just speed. They are dominating Formula 1 they have enough data to make a faster vehicle, but Honda doesn’t just aim for speed, they think of the Overall performance of the vehicle!!!🙏 Im still rolling my 97 Honda accord!!! Great point. I'd be curious if there is any wheel weight too. Optional lighter option on honda's website(5.29 lbs lighter than stock) automobiles.honda.com/-/media/Honda-Automobiles/Vehicles/2023/Civic-Type-R/BAP-Modals/BAP-Modals/02-Wheels/MY23-Civic-Type-R-BAP-modal-Alloy-Wheel-1x.jpg
meanwhile my 22 WRX has 4.44 lol. It loves gas
Slower stock but it's going to be way faster with big turbo and FBO for the same reason.
I think the diff easily boils down to the new R having 19s/Pilot Sports vs the FK8 with 20s/Contis.
FL5 tyres is smaller
With all the dealer mark ups the gr Corolla and CTR are getting the gr86 looks like a bargain.
A used CTR 10 like a bargain compared to the GR86. So do the N cars.
Luckily i found a Gr Corolla only 5k mark up. Others are 10k and 15k mark ups

@@NormEatsRice I drive an RS3…lol. Focus RS is pretty sick though
Glad we weren't the only ones getting thrown about in the new Civic Type R 😅
I had to replay "Our focus shifted to a focused man focused in a focus" a few times to truly understand the poetry that was unravelling in my ears.
One thing I recall when C&D long term tested the accord 2.0t, it gained almost 5mph in the 1/4mile after 40,000 miles, maybe this engine is experiencing the same thing after more break-in
I was thinking the same thing, it seems as though on turbo cars after 30000 miles they gain speed. This is common among other platforms as well.
Yeah I'm kind of surprised car reviewers don't know this. It's been a thing since the beginning of the car.
By that time there will be no type r with oem tune and probably a new model already😂
I think Karston deserves to be in the vids a lil longer than just a couple drag races

Thank you so much for bringing back the Focus RS, you have grown so much since then and I’m so happy to see it up against the new competition. Might be from 2016 but still throws punches in its segment.
Now sad that it couldn’t make hot laps 😔
Ditto and ditto
Damn, new Type-R statistically as fast as an M2 comp? That is a massive accomplishment.
People will argue it's going to vary by track, day, etc. BUT the fact that it's even close is a crazy accomplishment by Honda.
@@takeit1229 more a bmw fault. The m2 is too big and heavy

@@GetOffMyLog wow do you consider that tight? It's at least twice as wide as an average mountain road here. Maybe that's why these hot hatches are not that fast

Elantra N look up there a vid with a Elantra with just tune and tires doing 11s in the 1/4 thats crazy fast for a stock care with such simple mods , also i hace both the fk8 and EN and i can say these cars are veeery similar
@@opadilla123as an EN owner who’s allowed multiple FK8 and FL5 owners drive my DCT N they’re all blown away at the fact it costs less than the FK8 and FL5 and is just as quick if not slightly quicker and has all the things that made the FK8 special besides the heritage but that comes with time. Let’s hope Hyundai and Honda continue to push one another to keep making the best cars in this segment.

@@Spiritcr1jsher extra 6lb in terms of unsprung weight for the suspension is a lot lol, putting more width tires mean more weight and suspension re-work
As I suspected, the change in final drive, which improves mpg, makes the new one slower in a straight line
Excellent. Usable on the streets for 99 percent of us
Final Drive is what people don't realize makes the difference.
So it all comes down to gear ratios??
I love my FK8. That being said though slower or not I still want an FL5! I love the new design
265 ps4s tires vs old 245 continentals, I'm not surprised in the slightest it was faster on the track. That's a huge tire and grip difference.
@Apothecary Terry
The new M4 has 275s in the front and 285s out back for both wheel sizes
@@HotHatchHero Interesting, you're correct, tyre companies clearly haven't quite got their websites sorted for that, I checked 2 registrations against 2 tyre companies thinking that would be accurate info! Either way, 265s on the FL5 is still insane for a hot hatch.
Yeah, it confirms all my fears for the FL5. When its time to get a Type R, it’ll be an FK8. They look better to me too.
I still like the FK2 a lot too! I prefer the smaller overall dimensions of the 9th gen Civic hatch and the magic seat layout is useful. Unfortunately the FK2 Type R was never sold in Australia.

Thomas, I'm super impressed with your ability to launch with the manual. And yes, as pointed out if we were comparing the fastest version of each car the DSG would make a big different. Especially in the drag races. Can you pretty please put a DSG Golf R on your track to get a time? You can borrow mine :-)
Great content!

I know there's a lot of internet hate for the looks of the previous gen but I honestly don't mind it. I would go with the older style myself....if I was in the market lol.
I'm impressed at how well the focus did, out of all the cars there that would be my choice.

Great review guys! But...if you would like to make it much more interesting, you can put the wheels and tires of the FL5 on the FK8 and test it's Lap time again, as the wheels uses the same offset, it can be done! My personal thoughts and guess are that the FK8 will do the same Lap time when put on the same wheels and tires.

absofuckinlutely👍💪
personally i think when Honda decided to make fk8 the fwd king they did everything to make sure its as balanced as possible, if its as easy as wheel swap to make the old one faster then you are basically calling out engineers to be incompetent
@@uvicjackson You’d be surprised….
Also tires CAN make all the difference.
@tancock tires i agree, but wheels can be tricky. 19s might be better on 1 car but worse on the other, also with the older specially edition it came with cup 2s, lighter wheels. something they already did a test before. yet it wasn't m2 comp level kind of track time
The old Type R WALKS the 2023 Civic Type R. It has to be under rated. No way its 9hp less lol.
It's a final drive gearing change they did starting 2020 Si it lauches better but in a straight line like any heavier gearing it's slower.
Could be since it was a press car and the japanese are known for funny business with press cars. Civic type R is doing 4.9-5.3 compared to the 4.4-4.7 of the first press cars.

I assure you that's the case, because the FL5 weighs the same. Everyone is freaking out over 60 lbs like that makes a difference. It's 2 cases of water lol. It has more power, turbo with better response, and shorter gearing. Awesome show. My only input is I wish you guys put up the speeds for each car in the drag races. Just nice to see being a car fan

Another great review. As a previous SI owner, the Type R is incredibly intriguing. Honda knows how to build a fun hatch.
I would re-race the two Type Rs after the new one has had a few thousand break-in miles. Usually you gain a few tenths once broken in. Then the comparison would be more accurate.
