2023 Honda Civic Type R vs The Competition // Drag Race, Lap Times & Review

- Опубліковано 14 лис 2022
- The 2023 Honda Civic Type R ($50,050 in Canada, $42,894 in the US) has a lot to prove. Not only does it have to succeed its highly-regarded previous generation, but it needs to go toe to toe with some serious hatchback heavyweights. Such as the Volkswagen Golf R ($47,495 CAD, $44,740) and the Ford Focus RS ($48,964 CAD, $36,775 USD) among others. Thomas and James are eager to see how this new FL5 generation of Civic Type R has been improved and how it compares to its competitors on the track and drag strip. The results aren’t always as you might expect when a new generation comes along! Let’s see how the FL5 holds up. We hope you enjoy the episode! Thanks for watching. SUBSCRIBE!

That rolling race wasn't expected at all. I am just as shocked. Someone at Honda stuffed up big time
Wider rubber means more rolling resistance and more aero drag which weighs in at higher speeds. It also means better launch and better cornering which all plays out. Cars must indeed be very similar with subtle configuration changes leading to measured differences. Not too surprising really.
@@giovannigaleotti2623 Wider tires are also heavier. Rotational mass slows acceleration.
@@WisconsinEric the fl5 is also on 19’s while the fk8 is on heavy ass 20’s so the rotational mass is a mute point

It's a joy that the Type R, Elantra N, Golf R, and GR Corolla are in direct competition. All offer their own pros and cons and are fantastic cars for their respective companies.
You forgot the RS
MAN, you guys bring the value. Where others merely test the Type R, you compare it
And a lot more entertaining, but mentioning this is admittedly redundant 😄
yeah, definitely brings more audience to the video. I don't remember if straightpipes did this. Then again i like these guys better.
@@khyoon14 Straight Pipes are a bunch of sore losers.
You said it, love these guys !
One of the many reasons why this channel is way above Straight Pipes or Doug Demuro.
I love how everyone is drifting towards the conclusion that every single car in this segment is just great. It's gotten to a point where you can legitimately pick your car just by the brand you want to drive the most, and no one can really blame you for it.
True tho the brz and gt86 are in my opinion the only cars I'd leave off the list. Simply because they aren't really faster than these hot hatches but they also aren't as great to live with. But that's my personal opinion
@@championxxlNL: Whichever’s cheapest, has the cheapest repairs and gets the most attention, eh???
@@championxxlNL I would tend to agree but some people really want an affordable RWD sports car, and those cars fill that gap
I'm glad that's the case, considering I can't afford to pick my car as a college student lol. I've only ever owned auction cars that I'm lucky enough to buy for cheap and my dad helps me repair. We picked up a manual 2021 GTI recently and I couldn't be happier
@@championxxlNL Assuming you mean the new GR86 and not the old one, by all accounts they're way more fun than any of these hot hatches though
If Ford had kept making and improving the Focus RS, I have no doubts that it would shame the Civic and Golf in launch and rolling drags. Such a shame to see that legendary car falling by the wayside. On the other hand, I really like the new Civic! Styling and performance are spot-on.
Frs
They would have to ditch the 2.3L turbo with a improved engine which costs $$$. The ford Focus RS engine was recycled by the Mazda speed 3 & 5 which had bad reliability.
😂 you realize VW has the best dct around right. Shame whom?? , the Ford lost every single race lol
Ford Hocus Pocus the garbage Focus the car no one likes.
@@RDriver2.0 It's literally the oldest car there and cheapest, it's actually impressive how it kept up with those modern cars and even pulled on launch. DCT is good and all but the Focus hung still, so yea, it's a shame really.

You can have both, And it doesn't have to be a pissing contest! But I agree these guys are killing it and the production value keeps going up and up. The more awesome car content on UA-cam the better! Cheers

Damn, new Type-R statistically as fast as an M2 comp? That is a massive accomplishment.
People will argue it's going to vary by track, day, etc. BUT the fact that it's even close is a crazy accomplishment by Honda.
Potentially as fast, but if the Golf was a second quicker on this day than previously, the M2 could also be a second quicker in these conditions. Either way, the Civic is impressively fast, but while it may match the M2 in lap times, it sadly isn't anywhere near it for fun. Sadly because I so badly wanted Honda to stop their lap time obsession and make fun cars again, but alas no...
@@takeit1229 more a bmw fault. The m2 is too big and heavy
It's a tight track too.
@@GetOffMyLog wow do you consider that tight? It's at least twice as wide as an average mountain road here. Maybe that's why these hot hatches are not that fast
Expression of THomas at 4:35 while shifting from 3rd to 4th.. priceless. Made my day..
Thats the expression of a man staring at eminent loss.🤣🤣
The focused man in the focus, his facial expressions were amazing you could tell what he was thinking the entire time, and when he actually spoke “what” I was cracking up.
265 ps4s tires vs old 245 continentals, I'm not surprised in the slightest it was faster on the track. That's a huge tire and grip difference.
Yeah, I feel like that could account for literally all of the time difference to be honest. Would love to see this done again but with a set of FL5 wheels shoved on the FK8. Car wouldn't be set up for them but I wouldn't be surprised if it was still within a couple of tenths then.
Also, 265s are insane on a hot hatch. A new RWD M4 Comp only has 255 rear tyres but that has 510hp and weighs more than most towns. Those tyres and the relatively poor economy (I'm assuming not much improved since the FK8) mean the FL5 has comparable running costs to some fairly serious sports cars that it can't compete with as a driving experience- a 991 Carrera would cost the same to buy and run, at least here in the UK. In terms of driving pleasure, that's really not a comparison the FL5 wants to be part of...
@Apothecary Terry
The new M4 has 275s in the front and 285s out back for both wheel sizes
@@HotHatchHero Interesting, you're correct, tyre companies clearly haven't quite got their websites sorted for that, I checked 2 registrations against 2 tyre companies thinking that would be accurate info! Either way, 265s on the FL5 is still insane for a hot hatch.

Just when you think that this channel has reached peak production levels, you guys pull something like this off. Unbelievable, you guys are absolute legends, well done!
As I suspected, the change in final drive, which improves mpg, makes the new one slower in a straight line
Excellent. Usable on the streets for 99 percent of us
Final Drive is what people don't realize makes the difference. If it has enough in the torque curve to pull the gears it'll have a wave you feel. If not, it does that... I have the highway gear in my truck; 3.55 ratio. 70 mph at 2,000rpm but with that you get 1-2 shift at 35mph and the 2-3 at 70.. with 4 & 5 being overdrive. So I run OD off to avoid it shifting too much in the city, negating the "milage gains" though which is pointless because it has enough torque to leave in 2nd and 4/5 doesn't shift until 40-50 with lockup around 52mph. So old auto or new Manual, gearing matters
Not that simple to tell - when the overall tyre diameter is a different size, not to mention there is slightly different power. Wasn't going to know until the test.
So it all comes down to gear ratios??
I love my FK8. That being said though slower or not I still want an FL5! I love the new design
I do like the banter between these two. Far better than most youtube channels
Yeah, it confirms all my fears for the FL5. When its time to get a Type R, it’ll be an FK8. They look better to me too.
I still like the FK2 a lot too! I prefer the smaller overall dimensions of the 9th gen Civic hatch and the magic seat layout is useful. Unfortunately the FK2 Type R was never sold in Australia.
