Toto is considered some of the best musicians of all time. They were the backing band for many of the greatest solo artists of the late 70's and 80's. They played most of the instruments on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album for example. Their catalog is deep

We actually saw Toto in concert last night! They were so amazing! The same energy as the video, They rocked, entire stadium on their feet singing every word.
@@jimfrederick3907For real. Many "bands" in the current era don't have a single true musician that can play any instrument, or even write music. Then people wonder why the radio is still playing music from 50 years ago.
Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, Les Paul, Chuck Berry, Bix Beiderbecke, Fats Waller, Cab Calloway, Stan Kenton, Vivaldi, Fritz Kreisler, Paderewski, Bizet, Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Handel, Mozart, Bellini, Verdi, Rubinstein, Haydn ..... Sure. No real musicians before 1960. No real music. 🤣
I’m going to sound really old but I’m going to say it. This was back when you actually had to have talent. Actual singing, playing and performing skills. Honed. Practiced. To within an inch of your life. Today you can manipulate things and make music but is it really talent? We had so many talented artists.
You’ve heard these guys jams hundreds of times and you just didnt know it. The guys in Toto were Some of the top session players of the Seventies and Eighties and played on dozens, maybe hundreds of hit albums by top artists. David Paich’s father Marty did arrangents for Elvis and other big stars.
We had landlines back then, and an expression, we would use sometimes, was “hold the line”- you couldn’t always get hold of someone on a landline back then. No voicemail, no call waiting, no call forwarding. And you couldn’t carry your landline with you. If you weren’t there to answer, or you were on the phone with someone else, you couldn’t get THAT call! So hold the line - stick around and keep the line clear, so they can get hold of you. And if they were working, were delayed, or no where near a working landline or public pay phone, they couldn’t call - they would call when they could, so “Love isn’t always on time”. And if they didn’t have enough money for the public pay phone, they couldn’t call, or the telephone operator would cut them off after they used up the time they paid for. Even the next county could be considered long distance, and cost extra, even if it’s across the street. Sometimes it was phone tag back and forth, but you wouldn’t know they actually called unless you were there to answer the phone. SOOOOOOOOO much nicer and convenient with cell phones!!!!❤ Love TOTO!!!! And the lead singer is a very soulful singer!!!❤❤❤
David Hungate, after viewing the name on the demo tapes, explained to the group that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing". Because the band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they adopted the name "Toto" as their own.
"Rosanna" next. These guys are all "professional" studio musicians. Each one is a virtuoso in their own right. They were (and continued to be) hired guns for other bands (writing, playing) and decided to get together and do their own thing. This was the result. They all take turns writing, and singing lead (between three of them). For reference "Human Nature" by MICHAEL JACKSON is a TOTO song. Check the credits. It's them playing it too. And many other contributions on the THRILLER album. This is just one example of many. Check out "Rosanna" RECORD OF THE YEAR grammy for 1983.
So I'm a 58yr old Canadian..... It wasn't till this video that I noticed how much the lead singer of ToTo looks like and sings in the same style as Canadian great Burton Cummings lead singer for the great band "The Guess Who" {think songs like "These Eyes", "American Woman"}.
I get a kick out of the comment that Toto was formed by all top session players. Because, while that is true, most of them knew each other and played together as teens. They are like a garage band that separately became great session players and reformed as a super group.
All true, I went to Grant HS with the guys, Jeff, Mike, Steve Porcaro, Lukather, Paich, go figure. 50 years ago Jeff started the whole thing with Steely Dan, those were the days!
Some of the greatest musicians, studio and live, ever. They were in their teens and early 20s when they became 1st call session musicians on some of the biggest records ever made for a list of artists that includes Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Chicago, Donna Summer, Don Henley, Cher - and Sonny and Cher...just unbelievable bios for everyone of these guys. And, most of them went to high school together in LA. Lightning in a bottle.
The band did tell the press it was after the dog from Wizard of Oz but later on David Hungate explained that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing". Because the band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they adopted the name "Toto" as their own.
Toto is a phenomenal group: Bobby Kimball on lead vocals, Steve Lukather (suspenders) on guitar, Jeff Porcaro on drums, David Hungate on bass(in this video), and Steve Porcaro on keyboards, David Paich on keyboards. Bobby Kimball, Steve Lukather, and David Paich all share in the lead vocals for Toto. David Hungate told the guys in Toto that Toto in Latin meant all-encompassing, but they went with Toto from Wizard Of Oz in the beginning, but learned of the Latin meaning and went with that. Toto is in my top 5 bands of all time: 1. Kansas, 2. Toto, 3. Foreigner, 4. Journey, 5. Styx. Toto has some great songs like: Hydra, Hold The Line, 99, Rosanna, Africa(good just not in my top 10), I'll Be Over You, Pamela, White Sister, Georgy Porgy, I Won't Hold You Back, and more! Great band!
"99" is one of my personal faves by this band. I didn't follow the incarnations of the band after the early '80s, so I can't comment on their albums after that era. But they were very popular almost from the get go. "Hold the Line" was a big hit, for reasons you've just now witnessed. Outstanding musicianship and singing on a love song from a somewhat different perspective. A battle cry.
You've GOT to dig in to their catalogue post-early 80s. Some phenomenal music. Some recommendations: The Seventh One (1988), Tambu (1995), Falling In Between (2006), XIV (2015).
Once the band came together, David Paich began composing what would become the eponymous debut album, Toto. According to popular myth, at the first recording sessions, in order to distinguish their own demo tapes from other bands' in the studio, Jeff Porcaro wrote the word "Toto" on them. In the early 1980s, band members told the press that the band was named after Toto the dog from The Wizard of Oz.[10] After the completion of the first album, the band and record were still unnamed. David Hungate, after viewing the name on the demo tapes, explained to the group that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing". Because the band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they adopted the name "Toto" as their own
First, they're from LA, the San Fernando Valley. Almost all of the band went to school together including the 3 Porcaro brothers. Their name means total, everthing, as in music genres. Hold the line came from, I've got another call, hold the line, from another girl. I couldn't be prouder to say that they were all friends of mine in school. After 50 years, it still blows my mind, a new generation listening to my friends play and digging it. The musicians in Toto have played on albums, including there own, that have sold more then 750 million albums with Thriller at #1.
They're an American band. I won't guarantee that every member was born here, because there were a lot of them, but they formed as a band in the US. I'm glad you gave Bobby Kimball some love on the lead vocals. He's often overlooked, but I love his voice.
I haven't been listening to this in years. Just realised I still know every line in the song. I got the album as a Christmas present 1978. It is still in my possession, maybe time to play it.
I saw Toto and Journey together in concert not long ago. They are still incredible and put on a great show. The two bands are now connected family since the daughter of the Toto keyboard player married the son of one of the guys from Journey. It was a great concert, by the way.

Great reaction! I especially the wide-eyed look into the camera and sharing that you have "goosebumps". That's the stuff that makes "reaction" videos great because we get to empathize and share those "first time feelings" all over again through your experience. I love the respect you are putting on these older songs. I grew up on disco/R&B/pop dance in the seventies and eighties and added in rap in the middle eighties (Run DMC, LL Cool J, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Slick Rick, Whodini, Two Live Crew, etc). However, I could not STAND country and hard rock/heavy metal until my late twenties. I suppose growth in life is what it is all about. JUST ONE MORE THING: No disrespect but the Gun-n-Rose's line from "Paradise City" is "Take me down to the PARADISE CITY; Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty". Second video I've heard you misquote the lyric. I did double check myself in case I was mistaken before making this comment. Cheers!
We lived in Japan during the 80s. My dad told me a story about how my mom and he were trying to find the venue for Toto. They stopped in shops and asked, "Toto?" One shop owner figured it out and took them to the bathroom. Toto is the brand name for toilets in Japan. Regardless, once they found the concert, I wish I was old enough. I bet it was awesome.
Me and my buddy Bob who was a musician got blasted on qualudes one night and we both had to work the next day so he picked me up the next morning in his 70 coupe Deville that had a state of the art audio system and we both put a few drops of speed in our coffee and as we pulled away from the deli this song came on the radio! We had to pull over! This was so killer the first time I heard it! I get so jealous sometimes when I see you hearing music for the first time because I really don’t remember when the first time I’ve heard so many songs but this one was vivid!😂 great days just glad I survived it!
This song never gets old and fighting for love and sticking it out is most often the hardest but best decision. These were primarily LA Studio Musicians! And that drummer guy went on to some success as did the lead guitarist !
this is what music was all about in the 70- early 80s there was always 2 people singing the song the harmonies give the story and the song a soul and balances out the sound songs then weren't about the 1 singer. it was about the story sung and played all the great bands then did this
One thing dat toto is knowen for is tat in all ther songs you wil ave a part wher they surprise you out of nowher whit the Instrumental. And i love this kind of Artist
Glad to hear you acknowledge God's Rainbow❤. Like most Rock songs it had hidden/double meanings. Hold the line/love isn't always in time also tells guys to prolong a certain activity til your girl smiles😊
My favorite song from Hold the Line album, which I had as a freshman in high school on 8 tract Was "Ill Supply the Love" That songs shreds as well. Yes in North Dakota in the 70's freshmen ages 14 and 15 droves pickups with 8 track players to school. Life on gravel was good.
this is one of the groups i grew up listening too! so glad u are u like them! i have been listening to all kinds of music from rock and roll, hard rock heavy metal, country, latin, pop music since i was a kid!
'The origin of the name "Toto" was a cause for debate for quite some time. The band themselves gave differing accounts on different occasions. Initially, rock mythology had it that the name was taken from the word that Porcaro would write on the band's demo tapes to keep them separate from the other bands in the studio. Then the band told the press that they were named after the dog in The Wizard of Oz. Eventually, the "official" story was revealed to be that "Toto" was taken from the Latin words "In Toto," which means "all-encompassing," with the significance of that selection being that the band brought together so many genres and areas of specialization that they could, and did, do anything and everything.' - SongFacts website
I love the opening to your vids, Boys Are Back in Town.Thin Lizzy. I would like to suggest a few songs. 1. Eagles. Seven Bridges Road. Almost all a cappella. The voicr harmony I think is the best I've ever heard. 2. Willie Nelson. Seven Spanish Angels. Wow what a powerful story/song. 3. Jonny Horton. Battle of New Orleans. So catchy tune, almost sung like early rap. Kind of story telling of British invasion back in the 1700s.
Guilty pleasure sums TOTO perfectly. This came out when I was in high school and we all loved it. Afterwards I started to dig hard rock and metal and friends would look at you strange for turning it up or singing along. TOTO ended up being grouped with REO, Journey, STYX and even Foreigner for bands to avoid when with friends. Not fair to them, but that happens with conformity.
10:26 this is the first of the double-kicks. I know, I know. Go to any black church in America and 5 drummers can whip out drum kicks and fills. But this is so tight and right and to wait until almost the end to put them in. Jeff Porcaro is a top 10 of all time drummer.
Pimps. As many mentioned, they were the band on the Jackson album Thriller. They also wrote the song Human Nature which is a wonderful song. I love Toto. So badass.
I see you guys, and well having my first kid at age 20, and 23, so now my oldest kids are you guys ages, I can’t believe one of your parents didn’t play 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s songs in the houses you grew up in. My daughter, my oldest will be 45 years old this year, and she listens to all that even now, and even my youngest plays this and he is 22…
THEY would realY like SMOKE ON THE WATER BY DEEP PURPLE Thier Machine Head LP 1972 Those Gitar RIFFS are out STANDING I have tried to get B.P to react to them But nothing yet ,That Song he would realy have @ the TIPPITY TOP of his play list lol .Because ITZ TOTAL 70s 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The thing to remember is that these 60s and 70s bands with amazing lead singers like Bobby Kimball (Toto), Steve Perry (Journey), Ann Wilson (Heart) and those featuring their harmonizing like Three Dog Night and CSN&Y and so very many more did not have the advantages of today's technology. There were no in-ear monitors, no auto correct. Heck, wireless mics weren't that popular until the 80s. So when they sounded amazing live there was no crutch or trick. They were just that good. 🤘
The 80's had so much good music. I don't think these guys got enough credit. These individual musicians are some of the greatest backing artists who played on so many other albums and with so many great artists of the period. The production value and musical talent is off the charts with these guys.

Yup all session players who came together to form Toto. These guys are crazy good.
The first couple of albums are my favourites.
I mean Rosanna? It gives every guy a heart attack for a few seconds because the intro is.... Familiar to some
Best example that everyone can relate to to drive home the impact of these guys. "Human Nature" is a straight up TOTO song.
They did a couple of songs for Michael Jackson’s Thriller if I’m not misreading ?

70S GOLD RIGHT HERE LOL.
And that drummer guy went on to some success as did the lead guitarist !
this is what music was all about in the 70- early 80s there was always 2 people singing the song
the harmonies give the story and the song a soul and balances out the sound
songs then weren't about the 1 singer. it was about the story sung and played
all the great bands then did this
One thing dat toto is knowen for is tat in all ther songs you wil ave a part wher they surprise you out of nowher whit the Instrumental. And i love this kind of Artist
Glad to hear you acknowledge God's Rainbow❤. Like most Rock songs it had hidden/double meanings. Hold the line/love isn't always in time also tells guys to prolong a certain activity til your girl smiles😊
Toto is a great band .
The Roseanna shuffle is one of the greatest drum arrangements of all time !
Great video guys 👍🏻
My favorite song from Hold the Line album, which I had as a freshman in high school on 8 tract Was "Ill Supply the Love" That songs shreds as well. Yes in North Dakota in the 70's freshmen ages 14 and 15 droves pickups with 8 track players to school. Life on gravel was good.
Many talented people together is hard to find.
All stars of music period.... Awesome live too not just a great studio band. Underrated by the public. Admired by the players.
You have to give him credit for singing the theme song from the Lion King. Talent at all levels!!!
250 PLUS GREAT BANDS, THERE WAS JUST NOTHINGGGG LIKE THE 70'S GUYS! 😊
This, one of my favorite bands are unique - every song is good!! I have not heard one bad song from them. 😍
The singer on this one is Bobby Kimball. He is from my small hometown of Vinton, Louisiana and is a family friend.
NNNNNIIIICCCCEEEE
He reminds me so much of Burton Cummings ❤ I was litterally looking through the comments to see if he really or not lol
@@t.lee.p9182 SWEET LOL
I WAZ 17 IN 1978 WHAT A GOOD 70s song
Rosanna
You'll love it mate. The groove will hook you
There was the first song I heard from Toto and it blew my mind '70s music '80s music baby boomers music
this is one of the groups i grew up listening too! so glad u are u like them! i have been listening to all kinds of music from rock and roll, hard rock heavy metal, country, latin, pop music since i was a kid!
Some of the best players of all time in that group. Skills for days. Creativity forever. Way beyond today
Keep up the TOTO reactions. "I'll be over you" is another good one. Along with 40 years of other tracks, and live performances.
One of the best piano-centric rock songs 🤘🏽
I got to see these guys LAST NIGHT! This was an UNBELIEVABLE experience! I love music like this!
Toto is an epic band, this song is on my "forever playlist"!!!
Anything I own by Bread is a great song, another song in the same line is "In the living years " by Mike and the Mechanic you will love it.
99, Rosanna, I’ll be over you, Georgy Porgy, I won’t hold you back, Lea, Pamela, I’ll supply the love, Africa; all fabulous songs by Toto.
You would also probably like the song "Baby Come Back" by Player. That would be a good video to react to.
People would never make fun of you playing 😢great music from the greatest in music history the 70's. Love 💓 your channel!!!
UUUUUU BETCHA 70s all day any day
Saw them live 2018. They were still great.
Another one of my favs!! Next band u should check out is Kansas! U will love the song Dust in the Wind!
I miss the 60s through the 90s it was the best music to me
They were still touring last year. My wife and I saw them with Journey in our hometown. Great time!
TOTO is one of the tightest bands going still today!!&! Excellent musicians with excellent standards!!&!
So badass.
Great band. I would argue that "Rosanna" was their biggest hit and my fav.
The forever playlist
The great Jeff Porcaro on drums. So damn good
Made up of top notch LA sessions, musicians
I see you guys, and well having my first kid at age 20, and 23, so now my oldest kids are you guys ages, I can’t believe one of your parents didn’t play 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s songs in the houses you grew up in.
My daughter, my oldest will be 45 years old this year, and she listens to all that even now, and even my youngest plays this and he is 22…
I miss the days we had great rock music but you could actually understand what they were singing!❤❤❤
A true banger my favorite Toto song
Seeing them in concert next month. They still put on a great show.
Def one of the most diverse bands I know of. Toto’s Georgey Porgy is completely different than either songs you’ve done. Crazy talented.
