Session musicians that form a band and made some of the catchiest tunes ever written. Oh and the lead singer (with that just awesome voice) is the son of THE John Williams….(yup, he of the murmurous film soundtracks, and genius pianist)…
These guys played on literally hundreds of records before and even after they formed Toto. In fact, they formed Toto after running into each other so many times at sessions and deciding they should start their own band. Plus, several of the guys all grew up together and went to the same high school in Van Nuys.Of all the records they played on outside of Toto, we love their work with Sony and Cher, Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs and Michael Jackson.
Toto guitarist Steve Lukather played guitar & bass on Beat It by Michael Jackson. Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro & Toto keyboardist Steve Porcaro also played on Beat It, while Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo. Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro & Steve Porcaro played on multiple songs on Michael Jackson's Thriller album. They were sought after session musicians. You know many of whom they worked with.
In addition to the albums sold under their band name (40 million), they were prolific session artists playing the music for other artists, including the backing music on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. In total, the collective members have been recorded on over 5,000 different albums, selling over 500,000,000 albums.
@@Chiari_Queen_T yeah I actually said 80s and was laying in bed falling asleep and thought (that was probably late 70s) someone will call me out tomorrow if I'm wrong (I'll just say I'm I wasn't a huge foghat fan) thnx for correcting though. It was year's before I was born but no excuse...
This is what the absolute best studio musicians in the ‘80’s sound like when they want to be rock stars!!😆🤩 One of my all time favorites and a definite staple on my nostalgia playlist💯😁 🙂🔥🎶💯🙏💜
I saw these guys in concert with Journey in 2022. They are so incredible live! They STILL sound like they did 40 years ago, Cliff. This is such great music. I was 9 yo when this song came out and I've loved them ever since.
I would say 1980-ish because I remember Africa when I first met my BF of 43 yrs would play this when we would go out i his 1969 Nova. The good old days when I was young.
The most recorded players of their era. Together and alone, they have played on albums that have sold 750 million estimated. The biggest seller is Thriller by Michael Jackson. They're also my high school friends.
Quite possibly the greatest collection of musical talents ever!! Without guitarist Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro, Michael Jackson's album Thriller wouldnt have been what it was!!! The list of artists they haven't worked with is shorter than the list of ones they have!!!
You're right - you probably should see a doctor. Toto has several great songs! Thanks for the reaction! BTW, the song is from 1978. Dan Vasc does covers of this and also "Africa" and "Rosanna" from Toto.
I love when music videos do a close-up on the guitar solos. Dragonforce does that with Through the Fire and Flames. It's breathtaking to watch Herman Li's fingers travel up and down the highway of his guitar. The other guy is there with him, but I don't remember his name
@@SWLinPHX So true! He was also a true blue friend & just all around good guy. He is now in full blown dementia his memory spotty pray for him… we wish him all the best thankful he has someone special looking after him. What a wonderful man & gift he shared with the world.
@@MaMaSmo123 Gosh, so sorry to hear. I wish him the best and a comfortable remaining life. I still am impressed by the notes he hits in the "Africa" chorus. It's the only two lines of the song I have trouble singing and have to fudge or slide into falsetto, LOL!
It could be one of those things that you've heard in passing in a movie/tv show or sampled in another song...DMX & Harlem 6 sampled it in 2012. I was born in '78, I know the song, heard it many times, I have no recollection of it being Toto. Seriously I thought Africa and Rosanna was the only two they were known for. It was also in GTA: San Andres apparently.
I use to hear 'hold the line', but somewhere inside my head heard 'all the lies'. Kinda makes sense, maybe not all the time. I'm just falling apart and trying not to spill secrets of mine.
Seriously need some Genesis reactions Anything from Wembley in 1982 would be a perfect introduction Land of Confusion Home by the Sea ( you wont see music the same. after this) Domino Mama Thats All InvisibleTouch
Now that you've heard this, you must see the cover sang by Gabriela Gunčíková, it's one of the few covers that does the original justice IMO: ua-cam.com/video/JZipjgCrxAA/v-deo.html
Sorry, but that's not right. Belting out that song is the original vocalist, Bobby Kimball. Joe was their third (and current) lead singer. Joe was also the adult Simba singing in the Lion King.
This song has been stuck in my head for 40+ years, lol❤
These guys were all studio musicians, thats how they met, was playing on everyone else's hits.

Toto had a string of hits. "Africa" was their big #1 chart topper in 1982 that almost everyone today knows, including Gen Z.
GTA San Andreas soundtrack was my childhood 😂😂😂
Also, would love to see some more “Comedian Vs Heckler”-Comedy Gaff if/when you can
Steve killing it on the guitar and Jeff killing it with that shuffle on the drums. Love this song!
Africa or Rosanna should be the next songs of toto 😊

Great Song! 1978 ... I was 12
I LOVE THIS SONG........that is all!
Saw them in concert at Casper College, Casper Wyoming 1977 or 78. It was in our gym!
Probably the best studio band of all time. They backed up so many bands
Love that you’re expanding. Warrant/Fly to the Angels…😊
Fly To The Angels was by Slaughter.
Toto played this song in front of Tillmans music shop in Gastonia n.c. B4 it was released it was awesome
In late 1970s
Hell yeah Toto is the shit
It was great growing up in these guys, Supertramp, .38 Special, Journey… 80s music is the greatest!!
Yes!! 38 special ❤ Back where you Belong...
They did the Soundtrack to the original Dune in 83.

Rosanna is a masterpiece. Rick beatos breakdown of the song opened my eyes (and ears)
Frog Leap Studios cover of Africa is epic. Cliff listening to both could be a fun comparison.
Time to do a Yacht Rock stint!!
It should be stuck in your head; it's been stuck in mine for over 40 years.
For the al friend👍
“Africa” by Toto is an incredible song. Definite must listen.
It’s Rosanna. Sting did Roxanne. 😊
Every time I hear this song, I also hear the Pokemon theme song in my head lol

This song first Am lerning in GAME ( GTA ) 2006 Car in Lost Angels ( PS2) Grand the Auto !
That’s Bobby Kimball singing, an old friend. Unbelievable singer. No commercials, but you’ll never forget that incredible voice…
For reunion and comeback tours Toto always had to get a woman to take Bobby's part since he had such a high range.
