I agree with a previous commenter. The Trumpish conversation further fuels our sympathy with Marta, but it also fuels our feelings of “Is Marta playing the Detective and Us, the Audience?” As someone who’s also experienced casual racism like this in day-to-day conversation, I honestly felt that the audience also needed to hear how terrible this family is, much like the running joke of “She’s from Ecuador, Venezuela, etc....” It’s honestly an entertaining film that takes a minor political stance, and I am here for it.
So the mother said Marta was from Ecuador. The father said Paraguay and then Uruguay. The son said Brazil. We are never really told where she was from, but judging from her mother’s accent, I think they could be from Mexico or Central America.
Im so mad about it, I think this book would translate better into a movie but seeing the style of the orient express I know they are going to buctherone of my favorite books :(
Agreed. I hear that's what the plan is. Due to the success from this movie, they're doing a series/franchise based around Blanc solving mysteries...which is a fantastic idea!
her: frank oz is in this movie me: i dont know her. only frank oz i know is the voice of miss piggy and fozzy and other muppets, not an actor. must be someone else her: he's the voice of miss piggy me: WHAT?!
The “sjw” girl getting a degree was also shown to be a good person. I think she only called Marta and asked about the money because the family forced her to? And the granny of course was a beautiful queen who did nothing wrong
I don't think she got away scot-free either...she sold out Marta's mother for her all expenses-paid private college education. She could have just taken out a loan like the rest of us lol
I think it was more of the sense after thinking about it and how the family looked at her after the call she made to Marta was like her “initiation” to how the family actually operates and why the patriarch hated them.
Eh, she also betrayed her values. Granted, she's not as terrible as the actual literal racists and murderer, I'd say she's probably the least offensive one out of the bunch. Linda was also relatively okay, though Linda was also completely ready to call Marta a b*tch and accuse her of all kinds of things.
Literally paused...went to see the movie, then came back to finish the review. I agree i think i could have dropped 10 min, and the kid from 'IT' needed more and his mother was useless in the movie...why was she there? So fun though!
SAME, and I'm so glad I did! I'll have to see during rewatching it to really see if it feels like it drags to say if I think it needed trimming, though I agree about the kid and the mother. it was basically she wasn't even there, and the boy had maybe five lines between two scenes.
Also what was the point of having as the character of “online internet nazi” if you weren’t gonna do anything with it - at least Meg had some character
I think it would be interesting if instead of Michael Shannon having a wife; maybe she died or divorced him and he was secretly having a relationship with Toni Colette's character.
when I say I CACKLED when she threw the broken lattice part. can we discuss Jamie lee Curtis' side doughnut wherein she discovers her husband is cheating?
throwing in my 2 cents on the Trump talk. I thought it talked about Marta and use her as a prop without actually listening to her or letting her speak. Given the subtext about generational and earned wealth throughout the film, both the white conservatives and liberals in the family think they've earned what they have and don't see the hard working minority as deserving of the wealth.
I’m gonna put a pause on this review because I’m seeing it later this week and I don’t want spoilers. I’m super excited to see your guys’ take on it though. As for my favorite murder mystery movies: Clue or Murder By Death if I want funny (maybe even Who Framed Roger Rabbit) Death trap or Rear Window if I want something more serious. Also, don’t think you guys are big into anime, but there is this one anime murder mystery series called Umineko: When They Cry and it was fundamentally life changing for me. Like, it’s dark and super messed up but also redefined how I look at the mystery genre as a whole.
Joseph Gordon Levitt is the voice of the police detective in the tv show Marta's sister Alice is listening to in the kitchen when their mother tells her to turn it off.
i actually did pause and went to the cinema to see it! it was such an enjoyable movie. thanks for the recommendation and this review! the throwing up was probably the campiest part for me - kinda dark, definitely not pretty, and the MOST ridiculous thing.
I stopped this video and came back after I watched it! I loved it! There’s a possibility for this to be a series of movies with Daniel Craig solving murder mysteries and I’m not gonna lie, I’m here for it! Also, thank you guys for yet another amazing review! You two make me look forward to seeing movies again!
Since all the cars in this movie have Massachusetts plates, my headcanon is that Christopher Plummer's character is an alt- version of Robert B. Parker, the prolific Boston-based writer of crime novels that people buy at airports.
I just saw the movie and loved it! I stopped this review last week and I told myself I wouldn’t finish it until I saw it and here I am lol BUT shame on the MovieBitches for not mentioning the best cameo in the film: J.B. Fletcher playing on Marta’s tv in Spanish! Haha
Okay, now that I have seen the movie, I can now partake in this review. I absolutely loved this movie, it was a great whodunnit, up there with one of my favorites, which is saying something because I have OPINIONS about murder mystery movies. Loved the cast, especially Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana De Armas, Chris Evans, and Daniel Craig. The plot was tight and adequately foreshadowed, the twists didn’t feel like an ass pull, and just....there was so much good about it. Glad I didn’t spoil myself. Cheers to you guys I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
I loved the campy fun atmosphere of the movie and the characters were all so interesting. My only complaint is that I sort of wanted more out of those characters. I feel like we spent so much time on Marta, who granted is the main character, but I really wanted to see her interact with the family way more and see how far the crazy train really went in that household.
I was totally convinced through about 90% of this movie that Christopher Plummer's character was not actually dead. That he had switched the labels on the vials himself, purposefully knocked them over with the Go board, and used a prop knife (which he had referred to just minutes before) to "slit his throat," knowing that Marta would look away. That he himself had hired Benoit Blanc to investigate, and paid actors to play policemen who were eager to rush to the conclusion of suicide... all in the name of "researching" a book idea, and (potentially exposing?) the real-life investigator that had been featured in the New Yorker. Verifying for himself that his family was full of creeps and should be written out of his will was the icing on the cake. The housekeeper was in on it; later in the movie when someone tries to "murder" her, that was just a plot to see if they could extort some of the fortune back from Marta. I had it all figured out! And then... I was wrong, lol.
Funny thing is that you guys described Daniel Craig's accent as sounding like he should be wearing an all-white suit with people calling him "big daddy", and Don Johnson literally played a character that fits that description in Django Unchained.
Made time to see it this weekend so I didn't have to put off watching this review any longer. Came straight home from watching it to watch the review! Absolutely loved it. Chris Evans was looking miiiiiiiiiiiiiiighty fine.
SPOILER: I LOVED the reappearing ink invisible letters that Jamie Lee was getting from Christopher Plummer. Her character said she had a unique or secret way of communicating with her dad, fun plot twist 😍... also loved that the nurse's mom was watching Murder She Wrote in Spanish!!😂
This was the first time I actually didn't watch a review because I really wanted to see the movie and don't have it spoiled. Love the movie and review. I just wish some characters will have played a mayor role in witnessing something of that day. For me it was really strange they didn't touch more on Michael Shannon wife because I wanted to know why she spooked so easily when Don Johnson drop his cutlery. Also the political talk was the *why* Marta couldn't confess the murder, since her mom was illegally in the USA, she didn't care if she went to jail but her Mom was her concern.
Really loved the movie! So glad you two fave me the perfect hype post-TIFF. Went into my press screening so hyped. My favorite murder movies are Serial Mom, Girl on a Train (so messy), and Silence of the Lambs feels like it fits
I thought the ending was funny, because when everyone was looking up to Marta on the balcony, you could see her holding harlan's coffee mug and it says "My House" on it.
6:13 I paused this video almost two years ago, finally it's out on Netflix in my country, and I still remembered that I had paused this video and have now returned to watch it. Better late than never!
I thought it was pretty clear who did it. I didn’t necessarily know how, but I saw it coming. Also, Toni Colette was giving me Shoshana Schoenbaum flashbacks
while watching the movie, i thought it was weird when marta said that the morphine dose is going to kill him in 10 minutes and yet they had time to do ALL that and he showed NO symptoms that she described he would have from getting a large dose of morphine, so I thought "oh, someone else is going to come in and kill him" and when that didn't happen i was like OMG! overall, great movie! loved all the costumes!
Sooo many people do not seem to realize that top colleges, like Smith, where Meg attends, meet full financial need. If Meg and her mom had not a penny to their name, she could still continue to attend Smith. It wouldn't work with story lines like this one, or Lady Bird, if everyone didn't just flat out assume that low income students can't afford top colleges. In fact, top colleges are the only colleges and universities that meet FULL financial need. (no merit scholarships. Just need-based scholarships and grants, and sometimes small loans, depending on the university) Dartmouth for example, gives a FULL tuition grant to students with family income under $100,000. (well, that's how they did it in 2013 when we visited. ALL the Ivies meet full need, some with loans and grants, some with only grants (University of Pennsylvania meets full need with no loans) So for super-low income families, the most pricey, most prestigious universities and colleges are generally less expensive than in-state schools. There still might be a minimum expected contribution and students are expected to get work-study jobs, but if a low income student can get accepted to a meets full need school, they do not have to decline because of money. And the need for financial aid does not play a role in whether a student who applies to one of these schools is accepted or not. That is what "need blind" means. Meg would still have to document that they have no longer have income.
Something else that was fascinating was Michael Shannon’s wife is played by Riki Lindhome, half of the comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates, And she barely appears in the film.
I'm a couple of years late but if this is your first outing with Daniel Craig and a southern accent then y'all haven't seen Logan Lucky and that NEEDS to change!
I saw this last week in an early preview and GOD! This was so much better than I expected, more political than I expected, but it worked well into the plot
After her role in Blade Runner 2049 and then in this, could we consider that Ana de Armas is on a raft sailing towards Fabulous Cunt Island? Slowly, but surely, making her way toward the island with every great movie? Yay for her and for this movie actually being really amazing! Love your reviews!
I loved the movie too, but I think it would have been even more fabulous if Marta was indeed playing us all instead of being that good hearted ingenue. And I feel like that could easily fit in the plot as it is. Imagine the reveal of her being a fierce manipulative evil genius who tricked everybody, including Mr. Blanc, and all that AFTER the reveal of Hugh being the villain. Instead of good versus evil, it would have been simple villain versus mastermind villain. And she could still have a genuine caring relationship with the old man. She could have been a boss, but as it is, she just got lucky that a smart man was able to save her.
Finally saw this movie last night, I was fully enthralled and loved all of it! Stand outs for me were Noah Segens whoodunnit-fanboy moments, Chris Plummer being a cutie pie and a diva, and allllll of Daniel Craig! Also also also, Joseph Gorden-Levitts role was a cameo at beginning of movie; when Marta's sister is watching a crime show on her laptop in kitchen, that's Jo-Go's voice coming from laptop! It's super random but I liked it 😊
I had a lot of fun watching this movie. As it all unfolded, I noticed that I had a huge smile on my face. I really enjoyed the pay off of "this family wouldn't know the difference between a real knife and a prop," super satisfying lol
I loved how the whole thing takes place in Massachusetts but Daniel Craig is southern and it’s never explained, I seriously hope this gets at least some Oscar nominations this year it was fantastic
4:40 can u please loop this .... like Kronk in the Emperors new groove when he's doing his own music and holds his breath... :DDD like here 5:33 hahhaha
I waited forever (or at least it felt that way) to watch this review, because I desperately needed to see this movie, and IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Honestly one of my favourite movies this year, and your review was *chef's kiss*
Just saw knives out in theaters last weekend. The theater was sold out. The dig dang movie has been out for months. I loved it. Thought it was fun. Tried to figure out what the flowers everyone was wearing meant because Dad had a rose on his stationary. Idk but I'm guessing it meant their innocence
This movie is so good, what this movie excels at the MotOE didn't do is character development. Of course some get more than others but you still felt like everyone got their moment. For those who know, Benoit Blanc listen to his iPod is what Brannagh was trying to do with the eggs (or the book reading) but Daniel Craig did it better!
Ughh when you want to watch a Moviebitches review but the movie doesnt come out in Canada until November 27th. Really holding off on spoiling it for me cuse I majorily want to see it!
I went and saw this yesterday and I have to admit Toni Collette and Jamie Lee MADE that movie. It was great! Although I do admit I had to turn away for major portions of the movie because Im a sympathetic vomiter. But it was still a great movie!! When picking it out for movie night it kind of looked like Clue? Im so glad you mentioned that in your review too. I LOVE murder mystery movies so much. Where the whole plot lines up at the end? Where its almost better the second time around because you see things you didnt see the first time because you know how it ends
I dont know you guys... this time i feel we re gonna disagree lol I also enjoyed, but it missed so many opportunities and the characters were so poorly written... But I still had a good time
Thanks for this review! I loved this movie too. Though I was surprised you both didn't comment more on all the scenes of the main character's constant vomiting!
I do plan to see 'Knives Out' & I will now take your advice to see the actual movie before watching your review! I have never put MovieBitches review on hold! I need another 'Mail Time" to make me feel better...it's been awhile!!
Here's a question I have after seeing the ending - Did Harlem Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) figured out who killed him before his death but couldn't reveal this to Marta in order to keep her innocent?
Not even a single mention of the truth vomit or the knife chair! I'm shook!
I would rather see a Benoit Blanc Sequel rather than the upcoming Murder on the Nile.
Im so mad about it, I think this book would translate better into a movie but seeing the style of the orient express I know they are going to buctherone of my favorite books :(
Agreed. I hear that's what the plan is. Due to the success from this movie, they're doing a series/franchise based around Blanc solving mysteries...which is a fantastic idea!
her: frank oz is in this movie
me: i dont know her. only frank oz i know is the voice of miss piggy and fozzy and other muppets, not an actor. must be someone else
her: he's the voice of miss piggy
me: WHAT?!
Ana de armas was fantastic in this, love seeing new and upcoming Latinas in major films! Latina power!
Starring role in Blade Runner 2049...starring role in this...the next Bond Girl...her star is ascending fast and god does she deserve it.
Ana was great! I also thought she looked like Linda Cardellini so I was already biassed.
‘Closest thing we’ll get to another Clue’
Loved the homage of “he lived in a freaking Clue mansion!”
Cheeeeers 🍷
The “sjw” girl getting a degree was also shown to be a good person. I think she only called Marta and asked about the money because the family forced her to? And the granny of course was a beautiful queen who did nothing wrong
I don't think she got away scot-free either...she sold out Marta's mother for her all expenses-paid private college education. She could have just taken out a loan like the rest of us lol
No she cared until it could hurt her financially. Like I understand her being scared but she was NOT a good person.
So fun though!
Jeremy King Now I know why that kid seemed familiar. I kept thinking I had seen him but it didn’t register.
@@iain9757 Apparently Rian Johnson put him in to take a quick dig at all the internet trolls that gave him shit about Star Wars
I think it would be interesting if instead of Michael Shannon having a wife; maybe she died or divorced him and he was secretly having a relationship with Toni Colette's character.
As for a more recent 'whodunnit' with fabulous french actresses and amazing dresses I would recommend Francois Ozon's '8 Women'.
Omg this comment yes I wish they watched that movie is pure Camp
Brick is his first whodunit. Also favorite murder movie is Strangers on a train.
Good pick! Mine is personally a toss up between Sixth Sense/Gone Girl.
My house!
My rules!
My coffee!
Fun fact the note Daniel Craig place on the piano is a G, but what you hear is it A
“...and we will be back with more murder”
NOT ANOTHER WINE GLASS PLEASE 😭
I went to a pre-screening on Friday and I CANNOT shut up about how wonderful it is! Shouting it from the rooftops and telling everyone to go watch it.
andrew's shade to kevin spacey made me actually LOL
when I say I CACKLED when she threw the broken lattice part.
can we discuss Jamie lee Curtis' side doughnut wherein she discovers her husband is cheating?
throwing in my 2 cents on the Trump talk.
As for my favorite murder mystery movies:

There aren't any spoilers. All they talk about is clothes and shit that has nothing to do with the movie.
Hyouka is also great for those who love mysteries, its on the lighter side and episodic but still very wel done qnd ultra captivating
Speaking of Toni Collette could you please do a review of Muriel's Wedding? Please please please
I concur with this comment.
Every time they said "Marta" in this movie, it made me think of Arrested Development.
"I've made a huge mistake..."
DEAD AGAIN with Emma Thompson!!! That movie was great!!!
I NEED THE SERIAL MOM RETRO REVIEW
Since all the cars in this movie have Massachusetts plates, my headcanon is that Christopher Plummer's character is an alt- version of Robert B. Parker, the prolific Boston-based writer of crime novels that people buy at airports.
I just saw the movie and loved it! I stopped this review last week and I told myself I wouldn’t finish it until I saw it and here I am lol BUT shame on the MovieBitches for not mentioning the best cameo in the film: J.B. Fletcher playing on Marta’s tv in Spanish! Haha
I think it would have been more interesting if Chris would have got the nurse to marry him. Then everything unravels.
As soon as Andrew said comment your favorite murder movie I thought in my head "Serial Mom"
Avaryl two seconds later "Serial Mom"
Toni Colette really brings everything like no matter what she’s always knows what kinda movie she’s in and is always great
Okay, now that I have seen the movie, I can now partake in this review.
Daniel Craig was giving me Ewan MacGregor in Big Fish with his accent
That made me have a long Lasting crush on Ewan McGregor
I really love Murder Under The Sun the old Poirot film. But I'm always here for a murder mystery!

And then... I was wrong, lol.
but also, when are you gonna retroreview serial mom AND double jeopardy?? I need this now.
Die, Mommie Die is a great, super gay horror noir film by Charles Busch! Natasha Lyone is in it, you should see it!
Really hope you do a retro review of Murder by Death and all the old Agatha Christie movies.
This is one of the first reviews where I actually forced myself not to watch it before I saw the movie cause I’ve been SO excited for this movie
I'll be seeing it Wednesday.
i don’t understand why daniel craig’s character wasn’t just british?? it would’ve made just as much sense
lol I just think they really wanted just to have one of the characters yell at him, talking about his southern, KFC, Foghorn leghorn drawl. XD
Its to contrast with his name, he being British would just throw all that away.
I think Blanc having a southern drawl was fantastic. Craig really nailed the accent and helped make the movie what it is!
Same! How could I miss this movie?!!
On the subject of Double Jeopardy and Foghorn Leghorn accents, you should do a Kiss the Girls retro review
I thought it was pretty clear who did it. I didn’t necessarily know how, but I saw it coming. Also, Toni Colette was giving me Shoshana Schoenbaum flashbacks
Finally got to see it today & was so excited to watch this review :) Hope the dvd has alternate endings like Clue.
while watching the movie, i thought it was weird when marta said that the morphine dose is going to kill him in 10 minutes and yet they had time to do ALL that and he showed NO symptoms that she described he would have from getting a large dose of morphine, so I thought "oh, someone else is going to come in and kill him" and when that didn't happen i was like OMG! overall, great movie! loved all the costumes!
well at the vary end ( the vary last twist that for some reason The MovieBitches didn't talk about ) basically explains why that is lol.
Yay! More in-depth analysis of Foghorn Leghorn detective.
You guys, have to review Parasite!!!! It was so good! Right up your alley! Smart, witty! With twists and turns.
Went to the theatre tonight just to watch this after ;-) I liked the newest Murder on the Orient Express.

Am I watching this before watching the actual movie? Yes - and I do not feel bad about that fact one bit ;)
MrHenry84 even with spoilers?
@@ririschannelx Of course. I simply could not wait to watch their review ;)
Manhattan Murder Mystery is a fave of mine. Love the camera work and script is great.
thoughts on the 2020 remake of 'death on the nile?' i assume you wont be seeing it after the last murder on the orient express lol
Omg I’m so excited to watch this (after I watch Knive’s Out)!
lol you won't be disappointed!! it's a good movie that will have you wanting to yell/cheer at the screen! XDD
It's super random but I liked it 😊
Gone Girl is my favorite murder mystery
Retro review of dirty rotten scoundrels please...people need to. Be reminded of this...I watched it about 50 times as a kid 💖😂please
I had a lot of fun watching this movie. As it all unfolded, I noticed that I had a huge smile on my face. I really enjoyed the pay off of "this family wouldn't know the difference between a real knife and a prop," super satisfying lol
Makes me wanna go back and rewatch Peter Ustinov's Evil Under The Sun for some classic Agatha Christie Whodunnit Fabulosity
YALL HAVE NO IDEA HOW HYPED I AM FOR THIS MOVIE
(I will be watching this in the car on the way home from the theater lol)
Favorite murder movie must be Clue. But my boyfriend and I are gonna watch Murder By Death this weekend as a follow up to Watching Knives out tonight.
*Having flashbacks to the movie (Fierce People) where Donald Sutherland played Chris Evans’ filthy rich grandfather.*
:DDD
like here 5:33 hahhaha
I waited forever (or at least it felt that way) to watch this review, because I desperately needed to see this movie, and IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Honestly one of my favourite movies this year, and your review was *chef's kiss*
Are you guys planning on doing a review of Glass Onion? Just got back from it, and I really enjoyed it.
Rian Johnson might be out of his good, bad, good, bad streak bc Glass Onion was great.
I think you guys already know one of my favourite murder mysteries, but saying it will spoil my retro review pick!
Sir Ian McKellen as an alternate for Christopher Plumber?
Watched it last night! Suuuch a good movie!
I had to wait weeks to finally be able to watch this review (and the movie which just got released here today)! Not disappointed in the slightest.
Brick is one of my favorite movies of all time. I absolutely loved Knives Out.
Ughh when you want to watch a Moviebitches review but the movie doesnt come out in Canada until November 27th. Really holding off on spoiling it for me cuse I majorily want to see it!
This was my favourite movie of last year. Such a strong cast and a great plot.
Where its almost better the second time around because you see things you didnt see the first time because you know how it ends
avaryl: i'm gonna say no
andrew: okay
I dont know you guys... this time i feel we re gonna disagree lol
I also enjoyed, but it missed so many opportunities and the characters were so poorly written... But I still had a good time
Thanks for this review! I loved this movie too. Though I was surprised you both didn't comment more on all the scenes of the main character's constant vomiting!
It’s funny you mention murder on the orient because I always thought it wasn’t really successful and I just read the other day it’s getting a sequel.
I do plan to see 'Knives Out' & I will now take your advice to see the actual movie before watching your review!
I have never put MovieBitches review on hold! I need another 'Mail Time" to make me feel better...it's been awhile!!
Coming soon!
How many people thought that was Faith Ford as Donna?!?
You should seriously do a serial mom review
Here's a question I have after seeing the ending - Did Harlem Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) figured out who killed him before his death but couldn't reveal this to Marta in order to keep her innocent?
I would not mind more of Johnson and Craig murder mysteries as long as it has such a great cast as this
