The film from the opening is the classic B movie It Conquered the World, known from this and MST3k Fame. This is by far my favorite feel good movie, growing up I had such a crush on Bob and the beefy jock in the blue shirt
Yasss! Thank you James, I couldn't remember the name of the intro film lol... Also, I, too, would love to see you back for another Movie Bitches review! That, or, another review with Allison @ Movie Nights! I loved when you and Allison teamed up to review Barb Wire
Yes! And also had the amazing Katherine Helmond as her aunt! Every part of it was amazing. It was even a bit more risqué and jokey and the hunk character was hunkier!
The opening scene movie clip is a 1956 film directed by Roger Corman "It Conquered the World" with Peter Graves & Beverly Garland (My Three Sons mother)...... TruHor Honor :-) Btw, there is a 2nd Elvira movie but it is not a sequel to 'Mistress of the Dark'. The name of the 2nd movie is "Elvira's Haunted Hills".
Shocktober retro review suggestions: The Omen Rosemary's Baby Night of the Demons Rocky Horror The Craft The Lost Boys Addams Family Values Halloweentown 1 & 2 Serial Mom House of Wax (The Paris Hilton one) Interview with the Vampire Beetlejuice Sleepy Hollow Pretty much any Tim Burton movie, really
dont worry, its coming. elvira's direct sequel is in the works. she said its her next project and takes place right where this movie ended. we get to see her life now that she has the vegas show. guess those elvira comics are really selling up a storm. i couldnt get into them myself but hey, go girlfriend
So excited that you guys did this movie. So fun fact, attack of the killer tomatoes is Elvira’s favorite movie. And I feel like you need to do a supercut for when you hit 300 videos of how many times Andrew brings up Halloweentown. Also so a couple years back I went through a Elvira binge of her old show and her 2 movies and found out she did a movie with a young Henry cavill. It was a...and get ready for this! A rock horror musical based off of little red riding hood and big bad wolf was Joey fatone! Henry played the huntsman and Elvira was his mother who was eaten by Joey. I never watched the movie but I saw 1 scene and it was bonkers.
Cassandra Peterson ( Elvira) is actually fascinating. I'm not going to claim to be a mega fan but from what little I know of her she's had a really wild life. She was scalded as an infant by a pot of boiling water and had to have a bunch of skin grafts like 30 something percent of her body. When she was a teenager she was discovered in Vegas at a show with her parents and after high school she was a showgirl. I know she dated Elvis for a bit and she and Tom Jones were a thing. She was in an Italian rock band I think? Her autobiography is coming out next year and I'm really excited.
i love how this movie used to air in a weekday afternoon in the main tv network in my country. it was very appropriate to 8 year-old me to watch that while i drank a chocolate milk
Andrew: a lot of this movie, plot wise, is incredibly similar to... Me: To Wong Foo? The Love Witch? Andrew: Halloweentown Me: ............. you're not wrong
Don't forget that Patty (bullet bra) also had a small part in Death Becomes Her as the doctor/nurse who told Ernest that Madeline was taken to the morgue
It's funny you guys should mention that Elvira could use a Salem the cat. There's a pilot online for an Elvira sitcom that was sadly never picked up. It's basically proto-Sabrina the Teenage Witch with Bewitched elements and very adult humour. Well, Elvira has a sassy talking cat in it!
the definition of camp and one of my favorite films of all time. up there with clue and adventures in babysitting. watched it so much as a kid sigh yeah it was for the female lead and magic but now as an adult i can appreciate the campy messiness of it all
We randomly bought this film on VHS in the very early 90s (I was about 14) just because my brother and I liked the cover art. But we watched it and it was amazing. Still one of my fave films ever.
I love you and this was great. It is my favourite movie and I just wanted to add a few things. Cassandra was badly burned on her body in a childhood accident and the Elvira costume is fashioned to strategically cover most of her scars. She was bullied because of the scars as a kid and her sense of humour developed as a coping mechanism. I love her more for that. She is so gorgeous.
Can’t remember if this was also in the TV show or just in the books but in A Series of Unfortunate Events, Esme has shoes with stiletto knife heels and ever since I was a kid I always wanted those shoes 😆
Cassandra did a great interview on the podcast "Ghosted" with Roz Drezfalez (paranormal podcast hosted by a drag queen ❤)!! She talks about selling her haunted mansion to Brad Pitt
Have you guys ever seen Shock Treatment, the followup to Rocky Horror? It should be on you radar, especially because it's all about reality TV, but from the 80s, so it's become more relevant!
At first I didn’t quite know what was wrong, but then it all hit me at once. You guys look like Alexis Mateo during the comedy challenge, and it’s unsettling.
When I got this notification I said "BITCH, YES" really loud in my kitchen XD Elvira and MovieBitches go together like fava beans and a nice chianti (sans liver, please). And I had to go back and make SURE I wasn't having auditory hallucinations when Avaryl said she'd never seen it before. I thought she was too powerful before, but little did I know I was watching an Elvira-less Avaryl. Amazing.
Thank You! Ever since I've heard Avaryl saying last year she hasn't seen this movie and Andrew has, I've been WAITING for October with the hopes you guys would review it!
I’m pretty sure it’s required by law somewhere to see Young Frankenstein. Better show it to Andrew as quick as you can. ;p Just wanted to again reiterate that you guys are a ray of sunshine that helps during down time at work. I feel like y’all would be super fun to watch movies with and riff on them.
It's not truly Shocktober until Andrew brings up either Halloweentown, or that one episode of Boy Meets World! Can't wait to see what else is lined up.
I grew up with Elvira. My parents loved loved her and I saw this movie as a kid not understanding all the adult jokes.. realized it later lol. I even dressed up as Elvira when I was 8. They loved her show which she did make fun of bad old movies like she does at the theater. She even has a rebooted show called Elvira's a movie macobre. It's great! Love ur review and so happy to have met her a few times .. thanks for the reviews have been loving them.. just found ur channel recently.. liked and subscribed
So Elvira had a failed sitcom called THE ELVIRA SHOW. They shot a pilot, it's hilarious, and the network didn't pick up the show because it was too risqué and they apparently had no idea what they were getting into. You can find it on UA-cam.
To this day, if someone apologises for boring me with some story, I reply, "Go ahead, bore me" as a tribute to this movie. Which I think I saw in about 1989!
Andrew's talked about Mel Brooks films before too and yet hasn't seen YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN!!!! This has to be the last film of Shocktober. It's the 45th anniversary, it's PERFECT!!!
Thanks for the hilarious review of 'Elvira' Mistress of the Dark'! I watch this movie every year over the Halloween holiday! Yes Andrew...... 'Young Frankenstein' by Mel Brooks is a must-see! Great comedy with side-splitting laughter!
I don't have twitter but omg people should send this to elvira! also cassandra peterson (out of drag) has a really good build series interview about her life which I totally recommend!
There is an Elvira "reboot"/sequel. It was made in the early 2000s and it's a almost musical set in Transylvania, called 'Elvira's Haunted Hills'. They are 2 of my favorite films, I have this one on VHS and the sequel on DVD. There is also an Elvira sitcom pilot which is available here on YT which is also amazing. Whenever I get a cold I watch all 3 on loop and drink lots of Breathe Easy and Gypsy Cold Care tea.
DO YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN!!!! It’s my absolute favorite I had a Mel Brooks triple cd with that, Spaceballs, and History of the World! I’d love you to skip everything else and do that🤣
So this has literally nothing to do with this review (which I love, by the way), but could y’all maybe retro review Best in Show someday? There is some charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent in that film for sureee and I’d love to hear you guys talk about it 💁♀️❤️ I’m gonna look into patreon (which I’ve never used before) because I am THAT down for it.
I love this movie & Elvira. I saw Cassandra out of Drag a couple years ago at Drag Con LA & she definitely has access to youth serum. I CAN NOT believe Andrew hasn't seen "Young Frankenstein" ??!!
When he’s in the neck brace, he’s doing a nasal voice (that sound to me at least) like Edward Norton at the end of Fight Club. I’m not sure what this means. I’m not a doctor. -Katya
Speaking of rebranded B movies, theres a late 70s/early 80s B movie that Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) was in as a supporting character that was rebranded as "Elvira Naked" because she did one short topless scene.
Funny thing is, I watched Hands of Steel / Atomic Cyborg before Elvira. So I'm watching Elvira and trying to figure out why her love interest looks so familiar, and realized "oh my god, it's the bland lead from Hands of Steel." I think I was having trouble placing the face at first because he's much better here than in Hands, where he's even more terrrrribly dull. Although this seemed to be a pattern in a lot of the old Italian ripoff films, get the lead with the wooden performance while George Eastman (not the Kodak guy lol) is giving off much more charisma as the villain... wherein George always seemed to have some kind of homoerotic subtext with the hero too, come to think of it.... ANYWAY, went way off track there. And yeah, that movie at the beginning was a Roger Corman movie called It Conquered the World. Pre-spaghetti western era Lee Van Cleef, pre-biography channel Peter Graves...
The film from the opening is the classic B movie It Conquered the World, known from this and MST3k Fame.
This is by far my favorite feel good movie, growing up I had such a crush on Bob and the beefy jock in the blue shirt
Jaymes is here to save the day yay
Yasss! Thank you James, I couldn't remember the name of the intro film lol... Also, I, too, would love to see you back for another Movie Bitches review!
That, or, another review with Allison @ Movie Nights! I loved when you and Allison teamed up to review Barb Wire
Jaymes, your movie knowledge is fantastic. Loved the Sunset Boulevard review you three did!
Bob is a yummy beefy daddy
Fun fact! The original pilot for Elvira’s 1993 sitcom featured her as a pair of witches who lived in the burbs with a talking black cat. SPOOOKY!
I automatically read this in your voice :)
It’s available on UA-cam x
Yes! And also had the amazing Katherine Helmond as her aunt! Every part of it was amazing. It was even a bit more risqué and jokey and the hunk character was hunkier!
Avaryl: "I haven't seen every movie..."
Call me shocked!
HannaJo WHAT?!?!?
“Bloody Mary.”
“No hard liquor served past eight o'clock. Do you want a virgin?”
“Maybe, but,I'll have a couple of drinks first.”
The reason I never smoked was the gas station scene. “Those things will kill you”. Always wanted to thank her for that.
Avarly :”it’s pretty G rated”
Oh well, there's nothing wrong with G-rated movies, as long as there's lots of sex and violence.
SCREW SHANE DAWSON'S NEW SERIES. I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS FOR SO LONG
Elvira on MovieBitches talking about monstrous tomatoes would be sooooo much fun
Do you mean "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes"?
All I can say is that meddling in the dark arts obviously does wonders for one's skin.
The opening scene movie clip is a 1956 film directed by Roger Corman "It Conquered the World" with Peter Graves & Beverly Garland (My Three Sons mother)...... The tassle scene is epic! I remember watching it when I was way too young and being truly amazed at her spinning skills.
i love how this movie used to air in a weekday afternoon in the main tv network in my country. it was very appropriate to 8 year-old me to watch that while i drank a chocolate milk
...Sessão da Tarde? Because I refuse to believe that more than one country used to show Elvira in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday! XD
Andrew: a lot of this movie, plot wise, is incredibly similar to...
Me: To Wong Foo? The Love Witch?
Andrew: Halloweentown
Me: ............. you're not wrong

Why does Avaryl remind me of thorgy when she’s concentrated
Can’t remember if this was also in the TV show or just in the books but in A Series of Unfortunate Events, Esme has shoes with stiletto knife heels and ever since I was a kid I always wanted those shoes 😆
The old movie at the beginning is “It Conquered The World”, 1956. Starring Peter Graves and Beverly Garland
Can we imagine living in a world where you two review a campy horror classic with Elvira? I would die.
i'm on a date right now and i'm tempted to later days so i can go home to watch this immediately!
They will understand
invite them to watch
I definitely snuck out of my house as a teenager to see Rocky Horror at midnight. It does indeed make all the difference!
I am always reminded of Pipi Longstocking when I watch that movie.
MovieBitches and Elvira do any retro review? Let's have this happen!!!
Cassandra did a great interview on the podcast "Ghosted" with Roz Drezfalez (paranormal podcast hosted by a drag queen ❤)!! She talks about selling her haunted mansion to Brad Pitt
I've been waiting for a rocky horror retro review for 2 years is it happening this year?

Thank you so much for reviewing my all time favorite movie!!!
so Tim Burton should make the sequel? here for it
I’m pretty sure it’s required by law somewhere to see Young Frankenstein. Better show it to Andrew as quick as you can. ;p

OH MY GOD okay! it's happening! Everybody stay calm.
yasssss been waiting for the spooky retro reviews for so long
1 second into the review: "Hmm something is different... OH they have Halloween decorations up"
It's not truly Shocktober until Andrew brings up either Halloweentown, or that one episode of Boy Meets World! Can't wait to see what else is lined up.
One of my favorite movies to watch in October! Yet another great review! You guys crack me up so much lol
I FLOVE this film, so glad that you guys watched it.

You poor poor chillin. I was around 12 when I first saw this movie and I've loved it ever since. Elvira is a goddess.
I'm HERE for Shocktober!
Andrew’s face reaction to the new Kingsman prequel hahahahah
Buffay The Vampire Layer is basically Lisa Kudrow in Elvira drag
For Shocktober I'd love to see retro reviews for Addams a Family Values, Beetlejuice and Rocky Horror
This is literally my second all time favorite movie!
There is an Elvira "reboot"/sequel. It was made in the early 2000s and it's a almost musical set in Transylvania, called 'Elvira's Haunted Hills'.

Also. realizing that bullet bra was the nurse in Death Becomes Her. mind blown. "She's dead sir. They took her to the morgue."
I love this movie & Elvira. I saw Cassandra out of Drag a couple years ago at Drag Con LA & she definitely has access to youth serum. I CAN NOT believe Andrew hasn't seen "Young Frankenstein" ??!!
The content I subscribed for!! ❤️❤️❤️
When he’s in the neck brace, he’s doing a nasal voice (that sound to me at least) like Edward Norton at the end of Fight Club. I’m not sure what this means.

Thank fucking god!!!!! The best way to start October is with MOVIE BITCHES😍😍😍😍😍
Speaking of rebranded B movies, theres a late 70s/early 80s B movie that Cassandra Peterson (Elvira) was in as a supporting character that was rebranded as "Elvira Naked" because she did one short topless scene.
I got the notification and shouted 'OMGGGGGG'
Shocktober is a state of mind, bring the spirit of Shocktober with you throughout the year.
You two are WILD
Cassandra Peterson and Lisa Kudrow were both members of The Groundlings, a comedy troupe. Maybe that's why you see this as Kudrow's kind of movie.
Since you Mentioned it I would LOVE a faster pussycat kill kill review from you guys. Tura was amazing!
Could you please watch Carry On Screaming for October/November. Think you would love it. Especially the "Do you mind if I smoke" moment.
I worshipped Elvira because she's fucking fabulous. Loved this movie. I wanna see it again.
"Fall River Hoedown"... Oh, my.
It's showtime! Oh, I am so excited!
"Double D~~!"
PLEASE do what we do in the shadows, that movie is fantastic
Funny thing is, I watched Hands of Steel / Atomic Cyborg before Elvira. Wow I'm early! Excited for spoopy time!
OH MY GOD YESSSS
It is ironic how Andrew's parents never let him watch anything but Nickelodeon as a child and he still turned into a total queen.
My baby was Divine for his first Halloween
Yaaaas!! Where are the pictures?!
IT won't let me post, I'll tag you all on instagram
FUCKING FINALLY!!!!! THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE AND IM SO HAPPY RN
at 1:50 when avaryl threw the pillow, you should have put that sound of a ceramic pot breaking
