I don’t disagree with any of your criticisms, but man do I love this movie. It’s my go to guilty pleasure film. I was hoping you’d talk about how ridiculous The Winner Takes It All was for conservatively 20 minutes! (I’m from the UK - apparently Brits really do just love this film)
We need more musical reviews Yes to the Burton Sweeney Todd* Yes to the Phantom movie** *and then the excellent 3 hour long original with Angela Lansbury **and then the 25th anniversary version You guys need those to clear your palette
LMFAO!!! Y'all are so rude when y'all put it on mute. I love it! I felt the same way about the Greek workers. They could have easily made the boyfriend and one of her best friends Greek.
Hubbard I have just rewatched it here on UA-cam, I was in stitches laughing at it! I think that Avaryl & Andrew would really appreciate the comic relief version!
I love this film, but two things: A, I am English & B, I have never seen it sober. I will now make sure to always watch it drunk, so as to not ruin it. Also, the woman who produced it did the Spice Girls musical, and that was one hot mess. And not in a good way.
Thank god I’m not the only one who hated Meryl’s acting ... I was invited by my cousin at the cinema and I had to sit through the whole movie... It was torture except for Christine Barinski Now I can’t wait for your take on Mama Mia the sequel..
agreed, if you're going to make movie musicals get actors who are legit singers or dub that shit. Also Michelle did the modern version of Hairspray which you guys should also review
Always love your Retro Reviews, and this time seeing you guys do a musical, even in this case such a bad one, was a delight! I hope you retro more Musicals in the future, I would love to see you guys talk about Moulin Rouge or Chicago!
I thought this was a really interesting perspective on the film. As a British person I think we 'got' it more because we have the cultural tradition of pantomine, all our lives we have to sit through very very poor productions of fairy tales at Christmas time with bad acting, bad singing, bad costumes, bad sets etc, everyone already knows the story, the audience are shouting out things to the actors. Mamma Mia is kind of like a filmed pantomine in that way and I think, possibly due to not knowing any better, us Brits loved it because we're comfortable enjoying something mediocre like this if everyone on stage is having a laugh and if the music is loud enough. Love you, Movie Bitches, you truly do the lord's work.
Also can we just quickly discuss that cher is only 4 yrs older than Meryl and they have her playing her mother?! Is it more fab, sure. But also infuriating, I certainly think so. It should be like...Betty white or even better carol Channing! Something more realistic.
msinarath yeah I've gotten used to this bullshit from Hollywood. Like Steve carrel was twice Anne hathaways age in get smart. Dave duchovneys "mom" in x files is only 5 years older Michael fassbender is only ten years older than his "son" evan Peters in x men
Exactly. Between this and my other big Hollywood pet peeve, whitewashing (and as an Asian American, this is a big problem I take issue with) Hollywood needs to get more real
It contributes to the expectation that 85+ year old women are expected to look not only 15+ years younger, but the same age as their on-screen daughters. "Cher is timeless" isn't a sufficient excuse for clearly not wanting to show elderly women on the screen
Yes! But I loved every minute of that train wreck!! That was the best trashtastic version ever!!!!! Minnie Driver was Everything in this movie..... so over the top bad acting (I still cannot decide if she was in on it & did that on purpose or what?!?)
I had the most fabulous experience in Santorini where they played Mamma Mia! at an outdoor cinema. The best part was not the view of Greece right next to me, but taking off my headphones to hear everyone around me singing Dancing Queen really quietly with their headphones on. I swear I’ve never had to contain my laughter so intensely in my life
Just started watching, but I hope that you comment on Christine Baranski because not only is she a goddess and can high kick like no other. Is she on Fabulous Cunt Island? Please? The same with Julie Walters who also deserves a spot on Fabulous Cunt Island, lounging around by a pool and enjoying life.
Finished watching, and thank God for Christine because she's the one and true savior of this film. Honestly, just search for Christine's "Does Your Mother Know" scene online and then just listen (don't watch it, just listen to it) and you'll be good.
I watched the movie last night, since I needed to experience it for myself. Your descriptions of the film were far more intriguing than any trailers, and I'm a sucker for schlocky so-bad-it's-good flicks. And oh boy this movie sure was a wild time, y'all were dead on about it. Watching the movie felt like having a psychotic break for 2hrs straight. 2hrs that felt like 6hrs. 2-6hrs of hysteria, fear, nausea, and more nausea. It almost felt like the movie itself was in various state of inebriation for the first hour and a half, and then hungover in the last stretch. Hell, even Meryl Streep seemed either high or exhausted the whole time, in her performance. The hyperactive cinematography was so overwhelming that, at one point, I actually screamed "just put the camera down!!" while nearly in exasperated, motion-sick tears. It has the opposite of the problem Xanadu had, where they didn't cover anything; they filmed most scenes from one flat wide angle, or at most 2 angles for dialogue framing, and it was visually boring. It was a movie filmed as a stage play. Meanwhile, Mamma Mia has waaaay too much coverage, and it feels like nothing was cutting room floored, except maybe any downtime that should be present to establish cross-shot continuity (I'm halfway convinced this actually takes place in the Bermuda triangle with how much teleporting happens,) or allow your eyes to adjust to new information. It's a play filmed like a movie. A movie on serious uppers. The relationship between mother and daughter feels inauthentic, probably because most of their emotional scenes happen in muted dialogue with music blasting over them. The relationship between soon-to-be-marrieds feels inauthentic because they have about 10 minutes of screentime together up until the wedding. The music is terribly integrated - all but about 3 or 4 tracks actually startled me with how abruptly they start, and how bad it sounds. Most musical numbers appear to have the same blocking as a play, but lack the spotlight/blackout/separation of sets/etc required to isolate the character who is, essentially, singing a soliloquy. The ONLY good piece of actual choreo is the Flipper Boys - and god bless them, they were the only part of the film that made me genuinly happy, and not laughing-as-a-fear-response. Although I did enjoy the "this could be cut as a horror movie" vibes of the Man After Midnight scene. There's more to say, but honestly, It was an incredible experience. I HIGHLY recommend watching it for yourself...but not if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or need to operate heavy machinery. And maybe avoid if imbibing psychadelics, as it was already like being on a trip that I desperately wanted to come down from.
When I 1st saw this movie in theatres on my Birthday. I brought my parents to it. The theater was jam packed with Gay Men and Post Menopausal Women in their 60s. They were all empowered and dancing in the doorway. The audience members were the best part of that experience. My Dad LEFT the movie during the Chiquita crying toilet number. He ended up retreating to a local Barnes & Noble and read a few Italian based mystery novels for the rest of the weekend. My Mom braved it out with me, but when the film was over all she could say was: "Wow. That was sort of wild... Like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but not as funny, or good...." It was the most uncomfortable, awkward musical movie/birthday ever.
Oh god. You thought this movie was bad, just wait until you see this patched together sequel. Christine Baranski is my universe, but there was no way even her powers could save it. I can't wait for your review!!
whenever i tell people im greek they typically bring up this movie. YIKES! anyway i just watched the second one and i DID NOT hate it so im excited to see your review!! love the spanakopita andrew!
I went to Greece once, and Greek people are weird - they hang around in groups laughing randomly, and they don't even have names - they're like little Oompa-Loompas.
This review was on the Recommended bar and I thought I had missed it before - but it was posted this morning!! Always a treat. Also, Christine Baranski.
ABBA's music legacy is all based on amazing vocal harmonies in a fun disco shell.... converted here into a movie with solo acts using realistic raspy voice... wtf.
This might just be my low key OCD talking, but did anyone notice that every single person on this island, regardless of age or gender, is wearing the same kind of slip on sneaker? And most importantly - that Meryl did not take off hers before she jumped on the bed?!
I really did not care for Amanda Seyfried and her vibrato - every time she began to sing I wanted to fast forward. By the way, have you seen the Red Nose parody of Mamma Mia? It's available on Comic Relief's youtube page :)
My sister SWEARS that the director deliberately kept the actors drunk on set to influence their acting, and that sounds insane but honestly I don't have any other explanations for these acting choices. Also yes Christine Baranski is extremely good and extremely hot in this movie and I love her
Fantastic review! I learn so much from your analysis of films actually. No joke. The things you point out as critiques give me actual insight into what not to do.
OMG ME TOO! I went to see the show in Toronto on my hs band and orchestra trip and had the best time. I wore out that soundtrack! Also Yes Yes Yes to Emma Thompson playing Donna. It was unpopular but I always thought Meryl was miscast and didn’t pull this off. She didn’t give me what I had felt in the stage show.
Oh my god THANK YOU for discussing the whole Colin Firth's character being gay thing bc I didn't notice that until watching it with one of my friends recently! lol I loved this movie when I was younger and it still gives me a sense of nostalgia so I rewatched it with her but I don't remember a lot of details from it so him being gay was a real shock to both me and my friend! 😂😂 They were SO SUBTLE about it
I love how you point out the Greek characters being a chorus, but never putting together they are a literal Greek Chorus. I didn't know the director came from the theater, so this being so on-the-nose makes more sense.
I went and saw this with my mum because I grew up listening to her Abba records and it was just so very upsetting. I feel like a lot of the choreography was also pulled straight from the stage version where you have to make a lot of big gestures. Please picture me flinging my arms around as I said the previous sentence.
Saw this video and thought it was a review of the new one and didn’t even care to click on it. Then realized it was a retro review and got veeeerrrry excited. Did not disappoint!!
I always used to think that I was the only person in the world who hated this movie! Haven't seen the stage musical so can't comment, but I genuinely don't understand why so many people love the movie, especially in the UK, I'm British and I don't get it lol.
If I ever need to laugh I will play this review !!! Mute brought tears! I remember watching this movie for the first ( and only) time and thinking it had to be one of the worst movies ever made....except Christine of course, love you two!
I randomly picked a point in the video and I got this sound bite: "Yaas, look at this boat! Hey Colin Girth, looking great! You tune that guitar. You must sound great. But I don't know because you're on MUTE." 😂😂😂.... I love this review... I love all your reviews frankly 💖
THANK YOU! I have always felt guilty to hate this movie. Well, hate is a strong word, but its just better to watch you guys talk about it than actually watch it once again lol
You guys aren’t giving Emmy Rossum enough acting credit, she’s really good x I’ve heard her sing in an IG post x surprisingly she’s really great. Overall I hate this show x the movie equally but great review as always guys!
They should have gotten Timothy Dalton, Bill Pullman and Hugh Laurie/Stephan Fry (Wooster and Jeeves!!!) as the Dads; Megan Mullally to replace Julie Walters and Emma Thompson as Donna. If they made it a period piece like in the 80's, I think it would have worked.
I have wonderful and fun memories associated with this movie (it was the first movie I ever saw in theatres) so I love it on nostalgia factor and pure camp (also Julie Walters and Christine). BUT I can objectively acknowledge that it is a hot stupid mess. And the stage show was better.
I grew up watching so many Bollywood movies (with silly/unnecessary musical numbers) so I guess that’s why the music didn’t really annoy me... that said this movie is a COMPLETE MESS
Literally just watched this last week and it gave me "From Justin to Kelly" vibes...meaning that I couldn't finish it without falling asleep, it was that painful. Retro review From Justin to Kelly?! 😆
I choked every time there was a Pierce Brosnan singing clip. Also recently watched the sequel and again Christine Baranski was doing the MOST and Cher was INCREDIBLE!
Also, If you haven't already you need to see the French and Saunders parody of this, it's so good and all I can ever think about when it comes to this movie "Just do Patsy!" "Chicken tikka, tell me whats wrong..." It's everything
I am so glad that you came so hard for the TERRIBLE FILMMAKING/CINEMATOGRAPHY. There are few films I've seen where the technical failures are so blatant and egregious. Mother of CHRIST.
When this movie came out, I did actually like it, but upon rewatching it...no! It's campy in a both a bad and good way (christine!) And you know who would have been good as one of the dads and if only he were a more well known actor, anthony head. Because he's a good actor, he would get the campy quality and he can really sing. But anyway, this movie is a mess and those camera angles...😖 it's like a bad ace of base music video from the 90s.
He was the best part of repo! Genetic opera! And he has also played frank-n-futter a number of times and kills it every time! Image him as sam! Would have been great!
I have never had any desire to watch this movie, and now I feel totally justified lol. Plus, be on the lookout the next couple days for a package I ordered for you guys off of Amazon. I have a feeling you're going to enjoy it.
I love this film and am from the UK too so maybe it is a thing.
Me and all of my fellow American friends are all obsessed with this movie. Quote it often, and watch it drunk regularly
They said Broadway so many times I expected Alexis Michelle to show up.❤🧡💛💚💙💜
I deeply love this movie.
It's effing terrible.
This review is amazing
extremely same
Avaryl can do uncannily accurate impressions of bad singers
.......is loving it just a UK thing? .....because I love it?
I think it's just us. Could be because we are always drunk.
It's not even fun garbage? It's just genuine garbage, but it's too reminiscent of going on a holiday with your middle aged mum and her friends?
Andrew: I couldn't quite figure out who to replace Pierce Brosnan with.
Avaryl: Anybody else.
LMFAO.
Andrew's Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd impression I HOLLERED!!! I love it!
"He did Thor."
"Oh! Which one?"
"The first one."
"OH!"
IIITSSS APPHHROODITEEEE
We need more musical reviews
Yes to the Burton Sweeney Todd*
Yes to the Phantom movie**
*and then the excellent 3 hour long original with Angela Lansbury
**and then the 25th anniversary version
You guys need those to clear your palette
Yall so SHADY putting it on mute
Im so sick and im over here laughing and coughing and cackling 😂😂😂😂😂 im in tears i love yall
Please never stop playing the Tom Harry and Dick clip I love laughing embarassed in public
Jo Dias I randomly hum that to myself occasionally and chuckle like a crazy person when I’m in public
LMFAO!!! Y'all are so rude when y'all put it on mute. I love it!
I felt the same way about the Greek workers. They could have easily made the boyfriend and one of her best friends Greek.
This brought back all my repressed memories of Pierce Brosnan singing...
I'm so much more entertained by this review than I would ever be by the movie.
I DIED at Meryl Streep the Old Prospector!
Now all i can picture is Meryl turning to the camera and saying "OOOoooOoOoOoOOH pickle shoes!"
I hear Meryl is up for Yosemite Sam in the live action Bugs Bunny movie.
Best thing to come out of this film was the french and saunders parody for comic relief
Hubbard I have just rewatched it here on UA-cam, I was in stitches laughing at it! I think that Avaryl & Andrew would really appreciate the comic relief version!
ANDREW! Your Johnny Depp impression is outrageously funny!
I found myself wishing this review would never end, you guys are godly :)
I love this film, but two things: A, I am English & B, I have never seen it sober. I will now make sure to always watch it drunk, so as to not ruin it. Also, the woman who produced it did the Spice Girls musical, and that was one hot mess. And not in a good way.

All I wanted for my birthday was for you to post a review of a film you hated and you did not disappoint. Thanks!

I always thought this was shot with a lot of green screen because it looks so fake.
Also can we just quickly discuss that cher is only 4 yrs older than Meryl and they have her playing her mother?! Is it more fab, sure. But also infuriating, I certainly think so. It should be like...Betty white or even better carol Channing! Something more realistic.

P.P.S. I'm so happy we share a love for Christine Baranski. She was just fabulous in THE GRINCH!
Plllllease phantom of the opera retro review!!!! It's a 3 hour trainwreck!
Yes! But I loved every minute of that train wreck!! That was the best trashtastic version ever!!!!! Minnie Driver was Everything in this movie..... so over the top bad acting (I still cannot decide if she was in on it & did that on purpose or what?!?)

I've noticed you guys drinking California Chop Shop the past few episodes; it's my favorite Winc wine so far!
In the actual musical the Greek peasants are supposed to act as a literal ‘Greek chorus’. Which works on stage, but was done poorly in the movie.
Just started watching, but I hope that you comment on Christine Baranski because not only is she a goddess and can high kick like no other. Is she on Fabulous Cunt Island? Please?

Erasmo Badillo-Pena just loop the part where she high kicks lol

45:56 I firmly believe the tuba is a countdown warning for you to mute the movie before it kills you.
When I 1st saw this movie in theatres on my Birthday. I brought my parents to it. The theater was jam packed with Gay Men and Post Menopausal Women in their 60s. They were all empowered and dancing in the doorway. The audience members were the best part of that experience.

It was the most uncomfortable, awkward musical movie/birthday ever.
Colin Firth can make anything better. He could be in the worst movie ever made and still nail his character
Oh god. You thought this movie was bad, just wait until you see this patched together sequel. Christine Baranski is my universe, but there was no way even her powers could save it. I can't wait for your review!!
What's even more hilarious, is that the ad preceding this review is of course Mamma Mia - Here We Go Again!
WAIT PLEASE RETRO REVIEW 7 BRIDES FOR 7 BROTHERS
whenever i tell people im greek they typically bring up this movie. YIKES! anyway i just watched the second one and i DID NOT hate it so im excited to see your review!! love the spanakopita andrew!
THAT's the first thing they bring up? Wow... People are basic.
ABBA's music legacy is all based on amazing vocal harmonies in a fun disco shell.... converted here into a movie with solo acts using realistic raspy voice... wtf.
not to mention no disco references whatsoever until the OTT costumes at the end
Omg when you guys muted it I was CREASED AND DECEASED 😂😂😂😂😂
I love when you hate a movie, the reviews are so funny hahahaha
Points for the shade to Russell Crowe in Les Miserables hahaha what a mess
What I can't believe is how you guys haven't retro reviewed Legally Blonde yet. PLEASE do it!!
I think what saves it for me is the fact I usually sing over all of the horrible singing and barely notice..... Also, alcohol helps!
#fuckyesbillpullman! For everything! Love that I’m not the only 20 something you still harbors a crush on him from nostalgic 90’s romcoms!
😂😂 They were SO SUBTLE about it
AHHH! I literally had a DREAM that you guys would do this movie (is that weird?) I love you guys so much!!
So funny that you mentioned Amanda and Dominic' nonexistent chemistry, however they were dating at that time🤣🤣
I have so many issues with this film but it contains a scene of Colin Firth in platform boots and a disco jumpsuit so i just can't hate it.
Colin 'Disco' Darcy!
LMFAO!!! The shaaaaade of it all.....it's factual though!!! I have always thought this movie is a MESS.
Please picture me flinging my arms around as I said the previous sentence.
Miss Sweet Nothings It works on stage because there’s more of an accepted suspension of disbelief of people randomly bursting into song and dance too.
Dominic Cooper is horrendous in this but 13 year old me was feeling all the vibes from him
Saw this video and thought it was a review of the new one and didn’t even care to click on it. Then realized it was a retro review and got veeeerrrry excited. Did not disappoint!!
When you busted out that pierce impression I burst out laughing in the middle of a crowded room. #wentfullpierce
that little grease gif made me really want to see a grease retro review!!!! I hope one day you two can make it happen!
I am here for the Bette Lindsay, Zac edit
LMAO ''Who's anybody ?'' should be used on pretty much every movies this past year XD
I always used to think that I was the only person in the world who hated this movie! Haven't seen the stage musical so can't comment, but I genuinely don't understand why so many people love the movie, especially in the UK, I'm British and I don't get it lol.
Every time guys never let me down for a great laugh ... awesome thank you very much
I’m just leaving this message to let you know that you are one of my favourite UA-cam channels EVER 👍😊
Why do they cast ppl who can’t sing in musicals?
I screamed when you guys mentioned Megan Mullally, she's incredible
YES review Grease!!!
I second that request!!
Ooh you should review Hairspray! Such a fun movie! Michelle Pfeiffer and Zac Efron were in that movie and they did great!
I want a compilation video of just you two dying of laughter
Have you seen the BBC Red Nose Day skit about this movie? It's awesome :-D
sjokomelk the way they do The Winner takes it all makes me weak to this day
I live for Jennifer Saunders' shawl-ography in that skit 😍
I keep thinking of Miranda Hart going "Just sing..." 😂
If I ever need to laugh I will play this review !!! Mute brought tears! I remember watching this movie for the first ( and only) time and thinking it had to be one of the worst movies ever made....except Christine of course, love you two!
I was wondering if you have any views about the Willam and Alaska podcast?
I randomly picked a point in the video and I got this sound bite: "Yaas, look at this boat! Hey Colin Girth, looking great! You tune that guitar. You must sound great. But I don't know because you're on MUTE." 😂😂😂.... I love this review... I love all your reviews frankly 💖
Dont forget that Pfeiffer sang in Hairspray
THANK YOU! I have always felt guilty to hate this movie. Well, hate is a strong word, but its just better to watch you guys talk about it than actually watch it once again lol
Bianca Del Rio: "Hate is a strong word -- that's why I used it."
Oh my god a Retro Review of Grease would make my entire life
amanda seyfried dated dominic cooper after this movie but when he had first expressed interest she told him she thought he was gay
You guys aren’t giving Emmy Rossum enough acting credit, she’s really good x I’ve heard her sing in an IG post x surprisingly she’s really great. Overall I hate this show x the movie equally but great review as always guys!
For real, and she has that pure look that amanda seyfried has, giant eyes and all. I love her in shameless
The shady edit of this video is giving me so much life.
I have wonderful and fun memories associated with this movie (it was the first movie I ever saw in theatres) so I love it on nostalgia factor and pure camp (also Julie Walters and Christine). BUT I can objectively acknowledge that it is a hot stupid mess. And the stage show was better.
I hated this movie. But it was worth it for the French and Saunders parody they did for Children in Need.
That
Was
Brilliant!
I grew up watching so many Bollywood movies (with silly/unnecessary musical numbers) so I guess that’s why the music didn’t really annoy me... that said this movie is a COMPLETE MESS
Mita K Bollywood is at least typically more coherent than this was
I laughed so much at this review, you guys crack me up and seriously brightened up my week! 💖
Don't forget that Meryl sang in the beginning of Death Becomes Her and Michelle Pfeiffer sang in the fun trash fest that is Grease 2. Lol
Omg the Deep impersonation is everything!! 😂😂😂 8:03
The stage show is playing in Melbourne at the moment. Does anyone know if it is anything like the film?
My first thought when I saw this in my notifications was "oh thank god"
Also, If you haven't already you need to see the French and Saunders parody of this, it's so good and all I can ever think about when it comes to this movie
"Just do Patsy!"
"Chicken tikka, tell me whats wrong..."
It's everything
I am so glad that you came so hard for the TERRIBLE FILMMAKING/CINEMATOGRAPHY. There are few films I've seen where the technical failures are so blatant and egregious. Mother of CHRIST.
AND THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL IS SO BADLY LIT AND WAFTY OF HAND
That fucking noise Andrew made for his Johnny Depp impersonation! I DIED!
When this movie came out, I did actually like it, but upon rewatching it...no! It's campy in a both a bad and good way (christine!) And you know who would have been good as one of the dads and if only he were a more well known actor, anthony head. Because he's a good actor, he would get the campy quality and he can really sing. But anyway, this movie is a mess and those camera angles...😖 it's like a bad ace of base music video from the 90s.
msinarath Anthony Head would have been fabulous!!!!!
He was the best part of repo! Genetic opera! And he has also played frank-n-futter a number of times and kills it every time! Image him as sam! Would have been great!
msinarath I liked it at first too but then I realized I was fast fowarding all the Meryl Streep parts whenever I rewatched it
DonnaLuuuu same also skipped pierce
I've tried to watch this movie so many times and I can't make it past...maybe half way? It's bad.
Thanks for summing it up for us!
I have never had any desire to watch this movie, and now I feel totally justified lol. Plus, be on the lookout the next couple days for a package I ordered for you guys off of Amazon. I have a feeling you're going to enjoy it.
I just love this movie. It’s terrible but so much fun at the same time. The French and Saunders parody is a masterpiece though.
What's equally brilliant is that Jennifer Saunders is a great singer in real life, too.
