So, fun bit of trivia on regards to growing crops on Arrakis. If you have a sietch directly south of a Harkonnen stronghold and start growing crops (remember that vegetation always spreads North), you can make the Harkonnen just up and leave. They're only there to harvest Spice, and anywhere there's plants, there's no Spice. So you'll send troops to the stronghold, and the Harkonnens will have abandoned it.
Dang, 30 years of playing this game and I didn't figure that out.. not that it really matters, I usually have a bunch of pretty kick-ass fighters before that strat becomes viable, but this does give me an excuse to replay the game..

Grew up playing this game, but never completed it until last year due to a case of being an infant, and freaking out at the skull-faced Harkonnnen so much I instantly jammed in the family PC's power button. Holds up surprisingly well, a shame that it always existed in the shadow of its Westwood counterpart. Cracking video, can't go wrong with an LGR retrospective! -Alex

The story in this feels like a "what if house Atreides hadn't immediately been betrayed and could have proceeded with their original plans" kind of thing.
I remember reading somewhere, from Mr. Picq himself that he had to wait ~ 30 years for his contract with Virgin to expire to be able to re-release Spice Opera Soundtrack, probably the reason why it took a lot longer to get a digital release and a remaster... I still listen the OPL track everyday, amazing work done by the composer!
Oh my goodness I'm so excited to see this video. My first RTS was Dune for Sega Genesis (which was a port of Dune II). It's stuck with me all these years and I'll often replay it. I finally read Dune this year and of course love the movies. Thank you for doing this retrospective!
This may have been my first computer cdrom game. I remember playing it alot only to get confused or frustrated. One day I sat down determined to play it for real. Other than NES games I feel like this was one of the first games I ever beat. The feeling of accomplishment and awe of what a superb game it was has put this game at the forefront of my video gaming memory. This was a nostalgia blast from the past. Thank you!
Thanks for helping me to relive this game all these years later. Flying around could be challenging, searching for all those seitches, sometimes flying right past them and having to turn back to try again.
I remember this game! While the sequel holds a place in my heart, this game has gotten me into the Dune universe established in the David Lynch film, on both the DOS and Sega CD versions. I also loved the Dune Theme, as well.
My favorite thing to do is to emulate a quick and subtle but noticeably horrified 1000-yard stare, followed by a swift and awkward subject change whenever someone asks me about anything past Children of Dune. 😂
love your retrospective. 30 years ago, i was spending weeks playing this game, even created a detailed walkthrough. got completely fascinated and captured by Dune world, characters, spice, the planet, and especially the music. What CRYO did is a masterpiece. and whole game (diskette version) took only 1.6MBs. also the visual effects, transitions, 256 VGA color palette shifts were amazing, this game was like anything else before. still listening to those soundtracks from time to time. and 2024 remaster, what a nice surprise.
I had the Dune II RTS randomly on my computer, geeky uncle must have put it on there for us, and it was a blast. Didn't even know there was a Dune I game for DOS. I bet I would have loved it too.
I love Stephane Picq's soundtrack for this game so much, it introduced me to his music (okay to be specific, a midi of the Dune Morning theme I stumbled upon at random in 1998 introduced me to his music XD) and I've been obsessed ever since.
Played this game on the Amiga .. Love it to this day. The soundtrack is fantastic, the Grafics are beautyfull to this day - the pallet playing with sunsets and rises is neat, flying blind with a thopter over the planet, discovering unkown Sietches - i played the hell out of this one!
Stephane Picq's music from Dune and MegaRace will forever hold a special place in my heart. His work is what got me first interested in video game music as a kid.
It's great to hear someone else who likes the old movie! I adore the new films, ofcourse and the book is great. But the old movie has something that makes me hope more people goes back to it now after the newer films. I've never played this version of the game, but I do have Dune 2000 on ps1.
Amazing how many games I've forgotten until you show a few minutes of gameplay. I must have had the CD-Rom version because I remember the voice acting.

Wow, such a good video, can't believe i missed this game, it sounds and looks so incredible for the time, as I played dune 2 instead, still had a lot of fun with it, having incredible battles, hope you do a video for that game also!
This game is the most optimized 256-color game I've ever experienced, it can run at full speed on a XT 8088 at 8mhz with MCGA graphics, VGA is not even needed. I had so much fun playing this on my old IBM PS/2 with those exact specs back in the days.
I loved Dune II and Westwood Studios (Command & Conquer, Red Alert), but never knew about this one being a more adventure/role play rather than RTS. Great summary!
I'm a big Dune fan (original six books and various adaptations) but haven't played the games. Gave this video an instant like, and I have that same laserdisc lol.
Apparently the games are all quite good, especially if you're into RTS. For Dune 1, we got this video, of course. Dune 2 probably being a surprisingly influencial one, as thanks to that game, we got the entire Command and Conquer series and set a lot of standards for RTS as a whole. Also made Ordos a third faction, and hence a more well known name in the general public (so much that the most recent one got people annoyed by NOT featuring Ordos as a faction). It then got a remake called Dune 2000, bringing it up to slightly better standards that CnC had added by that point (including FMV cutscenes because it's Westwood!) And then a direct sequel "Emperor: Battle for Dune", and not too long ago a more 4X-ish game with "Dune: Spice Wars", which sticks closer to the books than the above mentioned Westwood games.
It should be noted that if you liked the Lynch movie then 2000 and Emperor are great fun for the FMV cutscenes alone, especially Emperor which goes all in on replicating the aesthetic.
@@zephyr8072 the Lynch film is one of my all time fave films. I've never understood critics saying it's bland to look at, the Emperor's throne room is amazing. (Also it makes sense for the Pug to be in the film, royal families usually have small dogs).
@@locnar1 You can argue about the pacing of the film certainly but the visuals? What movie were they watching? The aesthetics were surreal and rather unique, and quite memorable.

I found these games in the late 90s when I was a preteen. I wasn't quite old enough to fully appreciate the books, or even the Lynch film, so these games were actually my introduction to a universe that I'm now deeply obsessed with as an adult. I watched the film soon after, which was an unfolding inspirational journey as I continued to get more out of it with every viewing. In high school, I was ecstatic to finally borrow the book from my school library. Since then I've made it a mission to digest as much Dune lore as possible, and Brian Herbert has made that a daunting but highly enjoyable challenge. Great video, thanks for sharing!
I mostly prefer it's bizarre atmosphere as well as set and costume design in comparison to the new version (which is still a better movie overall, imo).
The new movies are amazing but I LOVE the David Lynch one. I thought the navigator arriving in that weird tank, leaving pools of oil on the floor, being pointlessly swept by those strange dudes was so bizarre and original!!
I had this for Sega CD and its one of my favorite games; just love how your ability to speak globally increases as the game moves along and you can convince almost anyone to join you against the Harkkonens is fun every time. Great game.

Love this game. I played the Mega CD port in the 90s, it was my introduction to the Dune Universe. The soundtrack, although squished for the SEGA port, really stood out to me, as did the sometimes unhinged voice acting, unique visual style and FMVs. I had no idea about the David Lynch film so I thought it was all produced for the game haha.I subsequently got the books and the rest is history. I played the DOS version in University and got Spice Opera sometime thereafter. I have also only just discovered that Stéphane Picq remastered it, which I bought immediately! So many memories! Thank you for this video.
My memory of this game is that after a ton of trial and error I suddenly beat it as a 80s/90s kid and I had no clue how exactly. I had no idea what I was doing lol, I just kept talking to a lot of people. This game was so weird.

He got the rights back this year and re-released his remastered version of Spice Opera on Bandcamp!
@@RaptorShadowfor real? I love that soundtrack and listen to it at least once a month, but I never bought an official copy. Heading over there right away! Edit: just got to the part in the video where LGR talks about it😊
It was the first game I’ve seen in vga. They did incredible job with only 256 colors. Getting out of palace and watching sunset was something out of this world
You're a great man Clint. Loved this on my old 486 back in the day. Though im a massive Dune fan. That CD-Rom version went under my radar!
Played the Sega CD version back in the day several times. The music is just so good and memorable. I love the music in the 84 film too, but to say which one I like more is difficult, I think the movie and the game has its own unique sound but match each other in a way.
Haha, the inclusion of that little sliver of "Hell March" was a nice touch. Thanks for the great video as usual, Clint! I was much more familiar with Dune II than its adventure counterpart.
I'm glad you included bringing in Feyd and Rabban for your video. Thanks
I'll admit I missed your Simcity review, but when I saw this I was like, HELL YEAH, LGR IS BACK ON THE MEAT AND POTATOES RETROSPECTIVES
And it was anything but a Lazy Game Review. Top notch coverage.
Right!
-Alex
I'm really enjoying these dos game retrospectives, I hope you do more of them!
I still listen to Dune's OST on a regular basis. Stephane Picq rules!
Thanks! The studio version of this OST, Dune Spice Opera 2024 Remaster is now available for download in 96/24 Hi-res Audio Digital Album, and soon on CD!
BONUS GAME OST dual soundcards (AdlibGold-RolandMT32) included!
Improvement of stereo field, expanded frequency spectrum and unprecedented dynamic response in comparison to the 1992 version are now allowed by modern tools!
One of the most memorable games ever for me: still play it every now and then. The music is unforgettable: masterpiece.
The music is good but prefer the excellent music of Dune 2000
The story in this feels like a "what if house Atreides hadn't immediately been betrayed and could have proceeded with their original plans" kind of thing.
When I played this back then, I was always pissed that Leto didn't leave some airplanes behind for me.
"Someone call the Police." The snark level was gold in this episode!
The 1992 Dune game was very interesting. First CD-ROM game. Sold 300,000 units by 1997!
Meanwhile, Patrick Stewart is like: "oh, you were in a police band?"
@@iamgermane How is it the first cd rom game?
@@PeperonyChease I misunderstood what I read. It was just a first in CD packaging.
@iamgermane I had a quick google search. I did see something about it being the first game to be released on floppy and cd rom.
this is the game that got me interested in the world of Dune. Always loved everything about it. The soundtrack CD release is amazing, gameplay, art...
Patrick Stewart + Battlepug = Pure Win!
Didn't know that Star Trek played 20000 years in the future. 🤔
Its a shame that we didn't see Ser Pugsley in the new Dune movies. He extends happiness, he is vital to the series!
I thought you said Patrick Stewart + Buttplug = Pure Win!
Also acceptable @@BahhBahhBrownSheep
Patrick Star+ butt plug= ftw 😊
I have never seen that moving worm box art - that was cool
Funny seeing the characters winking at you to hint at what you should be doing.
These two Dune games started my fascination with Dune. I’m now off to see Dune Part Two for the 500th time! 🤣
Dune part two is absolutely unforgettable !
Thank you!
It is one of my favourite games of all time. I was so young and it was so evocative
That joke about Sting's voice was masterfully done.
Recently played and beat this game again. It's OST is timeless. Game itself is simple once you know the loop you need to do.
Im so jealous at your copies of this game! Unable to find these anywhere in good shape for years in Europe. Good stuff Clint! Love the channel
My favorite thing to do is to emulate a quick and subtle but noticeably horrified 1000-yard stare, followed by a swift and awkward subject change whenever someone asks me about anything past Children of Dune. 😂
I remember playing this game when i was 12 or 13 on an old Samsung laptop, it has been probably one of my favorite strategy games since then
Man, I haven't seen one of your videos in forever. I'm glad this popped up for me.
pc game packaging used to be so cool, I remember going to compUSA in the late 90s as a kid and looking at all of the cool boxes
love your retrospective.
Gee thank you so much !! Had no idea Stephane Picq did a new remaster !! Just wishlisted it and will soon buy it !
Those dialogues ... "I'm your mother, Jessica". No shit, mom.
"My name isn't Jessica!"
Get it?
I love Stephane Picq's soundtrack for this game so much, it introduced me to his music (okay to be specific, a midi of the Dune Morning theme I stumbled upon at random in 1998 introduced me to his music XD) and I've been obsessed ever since.
One piece of music from this game was used as background music for Spiderweb Software's Exile 2 (later remade as Avernum 2).
This is one of the game with the "thickest atmosphere" ever, I replay it every few years just to enjoy the feeling of it
Played this game on the Amiga .. Love it to this day. The soundtrack is fantastic, the Grafics are beautyfull to this day - the pallet playing with sunsets and rises is neat, flying blind with a thopter over the planet, discovering unkown Sietches - i played the hell out of this one!
Hope you'll like the remastered Hi-res Audio verrsion, then!
Stephane Picq's music from Dune and MegaRace will forever hold a special place in my heart. His work is what got me first interested in video game music as a kid.
After the Dune remastered version, I intend to care about Megarace, but Lost Eden First!
This game was hard, unfocused and clunky... and I LOVED it.
Just like the sprawling novel it was based on, sorta fits!
I had no idea how to play it as a kid, but I loved just walking around and looking at the visuals
Back when strategy game was not even a glimpse in Westwoods eye...
Agreed. This game was an underrated and overlooked gem.
It was a very experimental game that didn’t really fit any molds.
I miss the times I could just go into a store and randomly come across a gem like this.
Excellent review. I can't believe I didn't know about this game. I knew about the Westwood RTS but had never even heard of this one.
Loved seeing you pull the different versions of the game off the shelf, it's like I'm there with you checking out classic games.
Oh man I played and beat this as a kid in the late 90s, so many good memories. The music feels so nostalgic.
Hello! The remastered digital album features Full OST as bonus tracks, dynamically rendered dual-soundcard mix, also in Hi-res audio 96/24 with the same enhancements of album!
Man i miss buying games this way. I still remember the feeling of coming home and unboxing a game, it was so much more than just "a" game, it was a whole experience and sitting down playing with friends. Man, those were the days.
I knew I could count on you for a Police joke, I just didn’t expect it to be that good. Bravo!
those character sprites are SO GOOD, especially Jessica and that guy at 10:31
I'm a big Dune fan (original six books and various adaptations) but haven't played the games.
It then got a remake called Dune 2000, bringing it up to slightly better standards that CnC had added by that point (including FMV cutscenes because it's Westwood!)
And then a direct sequel "Emperor: Battle for Dune", and not too long ago a more 4X-ish game with "Dune: Spice Wars", which sticks closer to the books than the above mentioned Westwood games.
@@gimok2k5 Thank you! I'll probably try Dune 2000 since I'm a dedicated Playstation enthusiast.
This game is still awesome even today. The music, the hybrid gameplay and the lipsync make it one of my top 3 game of all time. I look into the spice opera remaster, thanks for mentioning it
Hello! The remastered digital album features Full OST as bonus tracks, dynamically rendered dual-soundcard mix, also in Hi-res audio 96/24 with the same enhancements of album!
You're very good at this, keep doing it.
The old Dune movie is so awesome, glad you're a fan of it too.
I mostly prefer it's bizarre atmosphere as well as set and costume design in comparison to the new version (which is still a better movie overall, imo).
I couldn't get into the new version, it's wasn't freaky enough for me
The new movies are amazing but I LOVE the David Lynch one. I thought the navigator arriving in that weird tank, leaving pools of oil on the floor, being pointlessly swept by those strange dudes was so bizarre and original!!
Look. Into. Jodorowski's attempt to make that film. He brought the artists that produced the inspiration of Lynch's movie...
The spicedriver edit is the best one.
I had this for Sega CD and its one of my favorite games; just love how your ability to speak globally increases as the game moves along and you can convince almost anyone to join you against the Harkkonens is fun every time. Great game.
Hello LGR i JUST played this game yesterday... So very wierd that you would make a video of it. Haven't touched the game for 20 years and just yesterday i play it. and you make a video.
It's almost as if some sort of massive, high profile movie release has possibly influenced the both of you.

Remember playing this game, and liking the Dune world - especially as i'm called Paul, and therefore a Paul Atreides...!
01:55 Hey, glad to see you've got a copy of Frank Herbert's computer book there...
It was foretold that the Lissan al Gaib will use a AdLib Gold card...
Dude is one of absolutely best games I've ever played. I'd be happy to see modern remake. Never seen such blend of different genres in any other game.
Dang, that was my favorite scene from the new films - where Timothée Chalamet walked in and said “‘Sup, I’m Paul” and got all the spice
I, personally, prefer the scene where he says "It's Spicin' time!" and then proceeds to Spice all over the place.
Man, whenever I see "Timothee" spelled as such I think of that Key and Peele substitute teacher sketch. Tim-O-thee.
Imagining Paul running into a sietch and saying "dude you gotta give me the good chiz"
My memory of this game is that after a ton of trial and error I suddenly beat it as a 80s/90s kid and I had no clue how exactly. I had no idea what I was doing lol, I just kept talking to a lot of people. This game was so weird.
LGR your so awesome for covering older titles!
it's a must play at least once a year for me. what a game!
btw those boxes are amazing!
Wormsuit on the Adlib is something magical, that song is pretty dope, it hasta a pretty cool drop

@@MDuff455 Thank you! I spent a lot of work and head-scratching to try to make the best from it, but the main thing was the expressiveness allowed by key velocity assigned not only to overall note volume but many other parameters! Thanks to Remi Herbulot who coded exactly what I designed...
And he's a nice and down-to-earth guy as well. I bought Megarace I just for the music. KGB's music is also fantastic, but I have a hard time tracking down a legal copy.
ive watched almost all your videos and this is your best yet
Always good to see people talking about this game, my first introduction to Dune. I've seen so so many articles over the past 30 years (and several this week) saying "the Dune games have a long legacy, going all the way back to the original game, Dune II". So few people seem to even remember that there was a Dune I.
